[Elecraft] OT: FT-1000MP resets

2012-04-12 Thread Martin
Elecrafters,
sorry for the way OT post. I just feel i'm in good hands here.
I replaced my FT-1000MP with a K3 some years ago and now the new owner,
who is a friend of mine and a plug&play amateur, reports about some
trouble with the rig.
It seems to reset itself during use, (i.e the display shows 7.000 Mhz)
I know there is someone out there who ran into this or knows a forum
where this is discussed.
Please reply direct.
Thanks

Oh, the backup Battery is new.

Good morning Don, thanks very much for taking the time to respond. Good to

getting as the book says 1.1 SWR and on some bands 1.5so all is well I
would assume?

Mike,

Yes, 1.5 is quite OK - your original email said 5:1 and that must have
been a typo.

Re: [Elecraft] K3: Terminology

2012-04-12 Thread Scott Manthe
Callsign restructuring occurred in March 1978. 2X1, 2X2 and N-prefixed
1X3 callsigns would've become available nationally at that point.
AA-prefixed 2X2 calls had been used during the U.S. bicentennial and
were released to areas that had run out of "preferred" (Extra) calls.
N-prefixed 1X2 calls were released about the same time, in approximately
1977. 2X1 calls didn't become available until '78. The first time I
heard on on the air was AB9W, who got quite a bit of ribbing for having
a "backwards- literally, if you look at it- callsign.

Re: [Elecraft] K3: PTT IN problem - cause found...Joe picked it...

2012-04-12 Thread VK7JB
Thanks Joe - you picked it in one! No voltage on PTT IN. RFC1 on the RF
board has failed open (9 M Ohm on my meter) and bypassing it restores the
PTT IN 5V line voltage and function, as you'd expect.

It's a surface mount component on the bottom of the RF board, for those who
might need to know in the future.

Next challenge is to replace it - I'm not very experience with SMC building,
but I'll give it a go. Or, would there be any problem replacing it with a
standard RFC of the same value if I can configure it to fit?

Re: [Elecraft] K3: Terminology

2012-04-12 Thread Edward R. Cole
In 1965 I was a tech so was restricted to 6m and up. I mostly was on
2m which at that time I was allowed on 145-148 MHz. Virtually all
phone (voice) was on this segment at the low end. I had a Johnson
6N2 (5894) and ran a Johnson Ranger-II for PS and modulation (AM). I
had a Clegg Interceptor-B which was one of the first VHF SSB
receivers so I could tune in 144.064 MHz which was the 2m-SSB
frequency in the mid-west. I had a xtal for that freq. so I could
talk with the SSB guys by running AM. Later I swapped for a DX-100
to supply plate modulation running two 1625's at 120w audio which
should have over modulated the 5894 but the mod transformer was
mismatched enough to load down the modulator at 150w RF output. My
xtal frequency was stabile enough for the SSB guys.

I "keyed" the radio by throwing a transmit-stby switch on the
receiver which controlled the Dow Key coax relay. The relay had
auxiliary contacts which keyed the transmitter. Most transmitters of
that time had simple mic connectors with no PTT switch contacts. The
transmitter keyed either via the CW Key jack or some pins on the
octal aux connector (remember those?).

Two controls for the final: LOAD was peaked for plate current and
TUNE was dipped for plate current (or do I have that
backwards?). That got the final about to resonance and max
output. I only lost one tube during those years.

Back in my Novice years on 40m I tuned CW or SSB by advancing the
regen control on my 3-tube "Ocean Hopper" receiver until it went into
oscillation. I had my CW Key connected across the speaker to run the
receiver like a code practice oscillator.

2012-04-12 Thread Karl-Heinz - DL2FAG
Hello

the problem is solved - the problem has been raised not due to any
configsetting and macros - it was my cat, which was walking behind the
radio. And over her "cable-walk" she has removed parts of the cables
between the different units.
So after I replaced and secured all cable again - everything is
working well again.

So finally I put up a "Cat-Stop-note" at the shack-table, hihi

Thanks everybody for their hints...

Re: [Elecraft] K3: PTT IN problem - cause found...Joe picked it...

2012-04-12 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
A two-terminal SMD is very easy to replace. Find a small, thin tool (e.g.
tiny screwdriver, tip of a knife blade or even a toothpick) and place it
where the SMD body touches the board and lift up on the SMD while heating
one end with your soldering iron. It will tilt up, held by the solder at the
other end. Now touch the other end with your iron while holding the part
with small needle nose pliers or tweezers to free it.

Clean any excess solder off of the pads and leave a small drop of fresh
solder on each pad.

Set the new part in place and hold it in place with the little tool you used
to pry the old part off with earlier. Touch one end, then the other with
your soldering iron to "sweat-solder" the part in place. Optionally, you can
clean off the pads entirely and have a tiny drop of solder on the tip of
your iron that will flow onto the solder pad when you touch each end. That's
a little trickier to do at first. Most people tend to have too big of a drop
of solder on the iron. If your first just make a "bump" of fresh solder on
each pad and wipe your iron before touching it to the joint, you won't have
excess solder.

All done!

The biggest mistake most O.T.s make is trying to solder the new part in
place by putting the iron on the joint and feeding in rosin-core solder like
we did when mounting big leaded parts on tube sockets or terminal strips!
That is not necessary. The "sweat-soldered" joint is perfect.

Another mistake is to hold the iron in mid-air the way we wielded the
100-watt soldering behemoths of old. Even if you are a rock-solid
20-something who does brain surgery on the side, arrange your work to brace
your arms or hands against something solid so you can easily hold the tools
exactly where you want them.

John,

To add to Ron's advice, If you use tweezers to hold the part, do not use the
type known as Locking Tweezers. These are guaranteed to launch the SMD

Also,

Having recently done my first SMD board, I'd like to add one tip that made
it easier for me. Instead of tinning both pads, I tinned only one. Then I
held the part with tweezers, flat on the board, just touching the lump of
solder. I re-heated the solder and slid the part over onto the pad, holding
it still as the solder solidified. Then I soldered the other pad. This
leaves the part nicely flat against the board, with no need to push the
part down through hot solder while bending it through cold solder on the
other side. I used curved, padded handle, very sharp tweezers designed for
the purpose and an Optivisor magnifier. I did about a hundred of these and
it felt pretty good right from the start.

Warning: I am a definite SMD newbie and my advice may not be technically
correct. It seemed to work for me, though.

[Elecraft] Cables and Animals

2012-04-12 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
In commercial installations where much of the equipment is racked we'd
occasionally find a dead cat or rat hanging on a cable or on the floor
underneath. They either chewed or they climbed a cable and their claws
penetrated the insulation of a wire carrying mains voltage or HV from some
other source.

Of course puppies love to chew on anything chewy. Cable carrying voltage can
be very dangerous for curious pets.

At an army radar tracking installation, we invited in a stray cat
because mice were continually eating through cables, nesting in tape
drive bays, zapping themselves, and of course causing (smelly!) problems
for us afterward. The cat must have been well fed with the mice because
it never contributed to the chewed cables. :-)

[Elecraft] Titanic radio traffic link

2012-04-12 Thread Hunsdon Cary III
The sinking of the Titanic
A very interesting version of the wireless narrative of the sinking of the
Titanic is offered by the BBC World Service. BBC producers used computer
generated voices of actual telegraphic exchanges to simulate the frantic
network traffic.

I expect this is of deep meaning to all amateur radio operators. The very
foundations of our service are clearly laid in this narrative. You'll hear
urgency, courage and disbelief from the wireless operators. You'll hear our
on-air jargon even as it is used today. You'll recognise network message
frustrations. You will be amazed when you hear echoes of our amateur radio
service as it is today--especially in times of disaster and recovery. Please
have a listen.

Bill,

That is good information, but is it effective in deterring ticks that
drop from trees and overhead bushes.
Here in North Carolina, most of the ticks do drop from overhead
locations - they sense carbon dioxide from our bodies and descend on
us. I am particularly interested since most all our property is wooded,
and moving through that "wild and wooly" 20 acre environment this time
of year results in a "tick search" each day.

2012-04-12 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
Very good! Thanks Hunsdon.

I have been aboard a steam ship that "blew its stack". The noise is
incredible. My experience was a simple matter of routine maintenance blowing
the crud out of one stack. The Titanic had to vent all of the steam to keep
the boilers from exploding after she suddenly stopped all engines. The blow
went on until the pressure was finally relieved.

Their "receiver" was a "Maggie" that provided no gain at all. It was not as
good as a simple crystal set. How Phillips or Bride heard any stations over
the racket is amazing!

2012-04-12 Thread dalej
I have never found a product that contains 100 percent of Deet.

Deet is an effective repellent, I use it all the time while hiking in the woods
and to fend off tics, deer fly and other unsavory critters that insist on
bugging me.

The most Deet I've found is in a 3 M product, at about 25 percent Deet. It had
an oily feel and I don't much care for the odor. I like the Deep Woods off
product at about 15 percent the best. The percent of Deet only means how long
it will last and at 15 percent it will last for several hours. I can check my
repellent vault for exact product name and content of Deet if you want to know.
I use the stuff directly on my skin and clothing.

[Elecraft] Shipping Status Updates

2012-04-12 Thread Dave Agsten
I'm wondering how often the shipping status gets updated? The last one on the
KX3 is dated March 29 and states that the page will be updated "regularly".
Additionally it asks folks not to call or e-mail for a status on their order.
(Understandable for sure) I'm sure many would appreciate a simple update that
would allow them to see that some progress is being made. If regular updates
are promised in exchange for no phone calls or e-mails then the status should
be kept somewhat up-to-date.

[Elecraft] New K3/100 & P3 Owner

2012-04-12 Thread William Wallace

Hello Folks,

Well the UPS truck finally stopped passing by my QTH today! He finally stopped
today and gave me a well packaged box containing a K3/100 kit and a P3 kit. Oh
happy day! K3/100 serial number 6396 and P3 serial number 2033. After opening
the package I began the easy (?) task (so I thought) of inventorying all the
pieces of the kits. I've got to tell you, all those little screws, nut,
washers, etc looked a hell of a lot larger on my 27-inch iMac screen (PDF
documentation) than they are in real life! I can see a big need for a small
magnetic screwdriver in my future. I'll decide after I complete assembly of
these two kits but I'm already leaning heavily toward factory assembly for my
KPA-500 when the time comes

Don't believe everything you read on the Internet! :-)

I remember blackberry picking with my sister when I was 6 years old. It
was hot so we sat beneath a tree for some shade and ticks began dropping
like crazy. She had a paper parasol which she put up and it truly sounded
like rain.

To answer Don's question about falling ticks, that's why I also treat my hat
with attached neck cover with Permethrin. Works great to repel mosquitoes
and deer flies also.

The problem with deet is that it has limited duration, and I really dislike
putting chemicals on my skin. I prefer Permethrin because you only treat
your clothes once every 6 weeks. However Deet is good for exposed skin such
as hands and face so it can be selectively used effectively in combination
with Permethrin:

Permethrin clothing treatments, when applied following Directions for Use,
have been determined to have "spatial repellency" against mosquitoes. This
means that mosquitoes will swarm around you, but not light on your treated
clothing and bite. Also use an EPA registered repellent, such as the Sawyer
microencapsulated Controlled Release 20-percent DEET, on all exposed skin
for further protection from biting and blood sucking mosquitoes. The
combination of Permethrin on clothing and DEET repellent on skin forms an
"Insect Repellent System." When used as directed on the EPA registered
labels, the Insect Repellent System will provide the best protection from
biting, blood sucking and disease carrying insects. A well known study
conducted by Tom Lillie, Carl Schreck and A. J. Rahe in Alaska in 1987,
showed 99.9-percent effectiveness against mosquitoes biting at a rate of
more than 1,100/hr. This protection is far greater than either a DEET based
insect repellent or Permethrin can achieve alone.

better to ship KX3s to bring the backlog into line than it is to update
the webpage with "which one is being shipped now".
Yes, I have mine, but the resources are Elecraft are limited, and at the
moment, they are a bit strained as new people are being brought on
board. I am certain Eric (the updater for the webpage) is busy with
other chores.

Thanks for your help at the RARSfest hamfest. We appreciate your
efforts and those of all others who participated.

I have a US military surplus mesh long sleeve shirt, with a hood
which is designed to be soaked in military DEET -- 4 ounces,
95%. You then wear it and it keeps the bugs away quite well.
When you're not wearing it, keep it in a 1 gallon ziploc bag.
One application of DEET lasts about a month. The design may date
from the Vietnam war era.

Re: [Elecraft] Titanic radio traffic link

2012-04-12 Thread Nate Bargmann
In addition to the link provided by the OP, here are a couple more
gleaned from a thread in the News forum at QRZ.com:

IEEE:

http://spectrum.ieee.org/static/the-titanics-role-in-radio-reform

A short film:

http://www.youtube.com/jkilts

Look for the "Last Signals" video. It is a movie portrayal of Jack and
Harold.

For whatever reason the Titanic's call of MGY (IEEE seems to have gotten
it incorrect as MQY in the article above) made perfect sense as it was a
UK flagged vessel. I was reminded of mention that the "M" stood for
Marconi in a later post. 1912 was long before internationally allocated
radio prefixes. Oops!

In response to the BBC verbalizing of the Morse messages I posted:

Nicely done!

What was left unsaid, and likely not germane to the story of the sinking
of Titanic, is that the actions of too many of the amateurs and
competing wireless companies' operators that night and in the aftermath
led directly to radio licensing. In the USA the Radio Law of 1912
established the federal government's authority over all things wireless
and banished the amateurs to a wavelength of 200 Meters. It also
required that prospective radio amateurs pass an examination and receive
an operator's and station license from the Department of Commerce. The
law had the consequence of cutting the number of amateur stations
drastically but also eliminated the free-for-all days of wireless. It
also had a few other unintended effects as well--official recognition of
amateur radio and rather than killing off amateur radio as originally
intended, it resulted in the eventual discovery of our presently known
shortwave spectrum along with the drive toward CW replacing spark as the
latter was more difficult to use on the higher frequencies.

So while I salute those earliest radio amateurs, our service as we know
it was truly born as a result of the tragic loss of the Titanic.

Possibly, we began to see these in late '66, maybe early '67. Never

It actually was last updated on April 10th. You may be looking at a

We do refer to the first day we shipped as 3/29 in the text. you may be

clarify that a little to avoid that.

I don't think that was quite it, Buddy. Knowing the BBC, I think they
translated the Morse to "normal" English, what ever that is. "DE"
became "This is," "MGY" became "Titanic," QTH became "Our position is,
and the like. I'm not sure why they went for the sort-of computer
voice, it actually sounded more to me like a real human trying to sound
a little computer-ish. But I did think it began to give a feeling for
the dire moments. I suspect "Shut Up, Shut Up" might have been QRT or QRX

We also need to realize that the RO's were not using Elecraft equipment.
:-) Their rotary sparks were hugely noisy, their receivers [and the RO]
heard [if it was very strong] whatever the antenna did not filter out,
DSP hadn't been invented yet, nor had keyers, QSK, or cans that covered
your ears and suppressed some of the external noise.

I've always wondered what it was like at Cape Race during the Titanic
sinking. I got to handle one small sort-of emergency while at the
coastal marine station. I was about to leave for college and I think
the OG's wanted me to get one emergency in my logbook. All sorts of
images went through my mind, none of which actually happened aboard the
ship of course. No one sank, no one even got wet ... but it was a very
exciting hour or so for me, the CG was having problems copying them, QSP
for the USCG was a big deal for a 16-yr old ham of 3 years.

It has been some time since I read it, but isn't a lot of Herbert
Hoover's actions with regard to amateur radio as Commerce Secretary
recounted in '200 Meters and Down'? No question, the radio amateurs of
the early days had a great friend and asset in the person of Mr. Hoover.

For those interested in the details of the eye-witness accounts as well as
the testimony of experts including Guglielmo Marconi himself, there are
complete transcripts of the post-disaster hearings on line at:

http://www.titanicinquiry.org/

There were hearings both in England and in the United States. That site has
the complete unabridged contents of both. Recollections of firemen in the
holds trying to deal with rising water, officers confused about the
lifeboats, the surviving R.O. about the messages he received and
transmitted and many if not all of the surviving passengers.

Some years ago I read the whole thing end to end. It was as had to "put
down" as the best thriller novel I've ever read. Even today, I don't open
the site unless I have an hour to spend...

I think it depends upon where you are. In the California outlands, there are
very few trees but countless miles of grassland that can grow 2 or 3 feet
high. I have seen photographs of tics hanging on a stalk of dry grass
waiting for a mammal to come along so he can 'hitch a ride'.

Re: [Elecraft] Titanic radio traffic link

2012-04-12 Thread David Cutter
Thanks for the link Hunsdon.

I was a little surprised by the speed of the Morse being sent early on; I
always imagined that on-off keying of spark was relatively slow. I suppose
this was made possible with the rotary spark machine.

Anybody know more on this?
