Re: [Elecraft] [K3] SO2R Controllers
One last statement on the SO2R anyone who has used the microHAM units and taken the small amount of time necessary to understand how they work just like and radio has no problems. I can strongly state that there software and the way its setup is the best I have found. The way virtual com ports are implemented is one of the really great factors that make all their products superior to others. True FSK is another strong point for me also and I have used it for a long time with Yaesu radios. Standalone programs are what I prefer not things like HRD and DM780 but contest loggers and myself Logic9 for all logging and tracking. With microHAM you are able to switch between all programs on the fly if you wish it is just a superior product as the entire line is and I have tried a lot of different ones. These are also one of the best for digital modes and the support is great when you need it. 73, Fred/N0AZZ -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Jim Brown Sent: Thursday, May 31, 2012 11:48 PM To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] [K3] SO2R Controllers On 5/31/2012 2:27 PM, Ed Muns wrote: The YCCC SO2R box has all the disadvantages that Joe has outlined plus it requires an external level translator circuit for FSK. That detracts from the advantage of an integrated box and lowered my confidence in the design choices made in this unit. I strongly disagree with your implication that the YCCC box designer(s) were not very good. They WERE, and the box is really well thought out operationally. They simply have different priorities than you do. :) My only fault with it is that the designer(s) are totally ignorant of the fundamentals of shielding, but there's so little active circuitry in it that it doesn't matter. I'm using a pair of low cost USB audio interfaces to feed K3 audio to a couple of computers for RTTY decoding. I have no comments on Joe's boxes -- I've never used one nor felt the need to do so. And what I've seen of the DXDoubler at stations where I've operated strongly suggests that it's got Pin One Problems, which can cause hum, buzz, and RFI issues. 73, Jim K9YC __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html - No virus found in this message. Re: [Elecraft] Need pricing help for used K2 system
Actually, I have been wary of how a K2 might have been built. But the ones I have seen for sale with pictures are really well done as far as what I can see. Perhaps the concern on the variation of how the rig was constructed has something to do with the resale. And for many the value is in building the kit. Once it is finished...nothing to do but look for another kit. Re: [Elecraft] P2 Span Question
How I use the span is determined by what mental mode I'm in at the time. In a CW pileup, I might only want to see the 10 kHz or so above the DX station. So the span might be set to 20 (remember, there will be 10 on each side). Other times, I might want to just see what's going on with the CW sub-band, so I might change the span to 100 - you might also have to center the display so the cursor is more-or-less in the center of your span. In a RTTY contest, I set the span down to 10 or 20 and tune for the peaks of the signals. After working my way from top to bottom (or vice versa), I'll use the CENTER function and dial the cursor to the other end (with the P3 knob) and start over for the next 10 or 20 kHz. Using the P3 can be very flexible. When I received the email to say my order was shipped I noticed the first letter of the street address had changed from an M to an N. but the house number was still correct. I used Reply in my email program to ask the person sending the shipping notice to confirm the address but never received a response. I also never knew how much was being charged to my credit card until I received my next CC statement. Seems I was charged the the rate on the website of $35 and actual shipping was around $24. The item arrived promptly (the postal code probably helped to point to the right street). Checking the packing slip I saw the same street name error as in the confirmation email, the wrong callsign, and the wrong (but still valid) phone number. Looking back at the original order, the phone number error was mine. I used the secondary number at the house. The other issue was a minor one with a small hole in the plastic back of the mini kit. A couple of parts were poking out the bottom of the bag. An inventory of the parts showed that nothing was missing but a part or two could easily have been lost/misplaced due to the hole in the bag. Re: [Elecraft] K2 vs. KX3 which would you get?
I think I'm right about this. things you get with the stock KX3 that aren't available on the K2 and that haven't already been mentioned : General coverage receive, FM and AM modes Fantastic noise reduction and noise blanking, FILTERING, AWESOME ADJUSTABLE FILTERING ! AFX Notch filtering that REALLY works (if it's like the K3 and I think it is), Passband tuning, Rx and Tx 8 band equalizing Memories by the gazillions, cw message storage Is there really any choice? I guess part of my partiality to KX3 is that I WOULD build it and that would make it a bit more of a personal rig for me. If that makes sense. Nah... Same principle as assembling other things you get in a box, like from Ikea!! It has already been built and tested by Elecraft, you just assemble it. Re: [Elecraft] K2 vs. KX3 which would you get?
I built a K1 was amazed, then built a K2. There is a classic beauty to the K2, I operated WPX from a upstairs room where the wife was sitting ( counts as quality time) and worked Austrailia and New Zeland on 12W from Sterling Va. What a thrill and I built it. I have been watching the KX3 videos and must say it is really growing on me. I eventually will get one but need to get a K3 first. I think the the KX3 is more of a assembly job. I believe you have to wind coils and solder if your going to say you built it. That said. I would go with the KX3 based on the pure joy I have seen the owners exihibit on You tube. 73 Don K4YND -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/K2-vs-KX3-which-would-you-get-tp7556850p7556930.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] K2 - K3 Comparison Question
Could someone owning both the K2 and K3 comment on the respective tone quality of received CW signals. When using my K2, I often find myself marveling at the high quality of the received signals; the CW has a melodious quality that's a please to listen to for hours on end - the signals sound like someone's sitting at high quality piano tapping out code, very very pleasing to the ear. Does/can the SDR K3 sound as good? I can't tell from listening to Youtube videos I've checked out, where people are fixated on demonstrating the adjacent signal rejection qualities of the K3 (the feature most often, and justifiably according to all the articles and posts I've read, touted for the K3). Is the tonal quality I love in my K2 a function of it being an analog receiver, something I'll have to forgo to obtain the better selectivity of the K3, or is the difference I appear to notice just a function/artifact of the Youtube videos I've been watching? Thanks, Paul, N6LQ Not trolling for a flame here; it's just I'm not a contester and am not really interested in giving up any of the listenability and other features that make my K2 so much fun to use just to get the ability to reject strong adjacent signals; I'd like to be able to have all of the superior selectivity and noise reduction features of the K3 without having to give up any of the great qualities of my K2, and need to get a warm and fuzzy on this point before making the considerable investment in a K3. Again, thanks in advance for any helpful observations you can offer! __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

I would like to remote my K3 using the Remoterig devices, controlling the K3 from a PC rather than from a K3/0. Re: [Elecraft] Office
With Elecraft Office I had two times excellent experience, last month at Dayton I ordered my P3 and I arranged to be delivered at the hotel one day before my arrival (I arranged to be delivered before my arrival to be on the safe side just in case). So in my case the delivery method was little bit complicated...shipping address different to billing address plus to a hotel over UPS and he service was AAA+. Same when I ordered my K3 around Xmas last year... I arranged with Ele Office to be delivered not in Canada but in US to a friend that I visited for few days on that time, AAA+ serivice also. One tip that I alway do when I have to arrange shipping over the phone (I am not a native English spreaker so I learned my lessons long time ago)...use ham radio phonetic alphabet when spelling address and kindly ask them to repete on the phone the address one more time to doublecheck all is ok. Also to be on the safe side one day before they suppose to ship product do a follow-up with them. As far as I undarstand Elecraft is not a 10.000 employee company, I am not sure how many employee are working in Shipping Dpt but considering the volume of sales I bet this support department is understaffed and overloaded. I am looking only on SN only K3...in range of 7K so I bet at least 20 orders/day in different forms and quantities (my guestimate) and in some ocations like new line e.g kx3 launch can go over 50. And is well known office overloading is working resonable for peek times but not on regular basic...my two cents VE3GNO Daniel From: Wayne Burdick n...@elecraft.com To: Kevin Cozens ke...@ve3syb.ca Cc: K2 elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Friday, June 1, 2012 12:54:18 PM Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Office We thrive on constructive feedback like yours, Kevin. Re: [Elecraft] K3 / P3 Bug?
Hi Alan, I did the reset on the K3, but to no avail. I'll try on the P3. But I'm suspicious that the P3 is not the problem since it merely examines a fixed IF bandpass. No doubt the P3 *is* the problem for the NaN math error, but not about the flat-line showing in the display. Eh? So it really looks like there are two separate issues here. Somehow the P3 has to know what frequencies it is looking at, so it can show numeric band edges, center frequencies, and marker positions. All of these are messed up on the 6m band. Hence the K3 must be sending information that either (A) is badly hosed up, or (B) the P3 can no longer handle properly. The second issue is the apparent lack of signal coming from the K3 to the P3 for display in the spectrum analyzer and waterfall. Surely the P3 is not in charge of the signal arriving, or is it? This problem did not exist in older revs (about a year ago), as far as I can recall. I just noticed it recently when I tried to zero-beat the reference oscillator to the 5th harmonic of my Rb oscillator in the shack. But I could be wrong about distant memories too - 73 de Dave, N7AIG On May 31, 2012, at 12:22 PM, Alan Bloom wrote: Hi David, On Wed, 2012-05-30 at 21:14 -0700, David McClain wrote: Hi, A few weeks ago I upgraded my P3 and K3 to firmware P3 MCU: 1.16 and K3 MCU: 4.48. Re: [Elecraft] K3 / P3 Bug?
Yep... resetting the P3 did the trick. I resisted because there is no simple save / restore of the configuration like there is on the K3. But resetting the P3 fixed the problems in all areas at 6m. Re: [Elecraft] K2 PLL Reference Osc Range Low
Jim, You are correct, the problem likely will be found in the soldering of the Thermistor board. Do these tests to see if it indicates the problem source. Check the voltage at U6 pin 5. It should be 4 volts - if not, you have a thermistor board problem Enter the menu for CAL FCTR - then tap BAND+ and measure the voltage at U5 pin 7 (should be near 4 volts) and the voltage at U6 pin 1 (should be near 8 volts). If those are not correct, you have a problem with the thermistor board. If you got close to 8 volts at U6 pin 1 in the last step, check the voltage at the cathodes of D16 and D17. If the voltage is not close to the same thing you read at U6 pin 1, you have a soldering problem at R19 or RP2 or D16 or D17. If all checked out this far, tap BAND- and read the voltage at U5 pin 7 and U6 pin 1 - this time both should be near zero. Let me know what you find. 73, Don W3FPR On 5/27/2012 1:50 PM, Jim KO5V wrote: If I have spammed everyone with multiple copies of the message, I am very sorry. My SPAM filter my also reply to any responses, since I'm not sure if my address book copies to the new email address. All tests and adjustments on my K2 build, up to the PLL Reference Oscillator Range Test, have been nominal. The range is low, at 9.3kHz. The PLL reference oscillator reads 12093kHz, and I adjusted C22 by zero-beating to my RX320 receiver set to 4.000Mhz. L31 is a 12mH inductor. I swapped X1, but the range decreased, so I reinstalled the original XTAL. I went to p10 of the troubleshooting section in the manual, and found the following: 1. Reference Oscillator Output: Pin 1 of U6 measures 0.7Vrms (should be 0.8-1.8Vrms) 2. VCO Output: Pin 3 of U3, 0.25Vrms (0.30-0.40Vrms) 3. VCO Buffer Output: Pin 6 of U3: 0.55Vrms (0.60-0.75Vrms) This was an old, unbuilt kit, S/N 212. I purchased new boards, and all parts and firmware to upgrade it to the most current specifications (new S/N 7279). I did not find anything on the Nabble archive, but I wonder if it's something to do with the thermistor board. I have double-checked my soldering. Any ideas? Re: [Elecraft] K2 vs. KX3 which would you get?
You are correct. Not a real build but for me it would be fun. I would never consider the K2 a real home brew either though. No drilling or etching boards. Everything is laid out for you and your walked through the build. I never realized there were contest for home brewed equipment. That is so cool! Where and when are those held? Stan AE7UT True building is winding toroids and making hundreds of solder joints plus mechanical assembly. The k2 qualifies as a real home brewed rig for several club contests. The KX3 is a great rig but does not qualify as a true kit in the eyes of many contest sponsors.
