Re: [Elecraft] For Sale: Elecraft K2 - 10 Watt Version
That is a "K2 at a bargain price". For any who may be concerned about the dial calibration, I invite you to visit my website www.w3fpr.com article on K2 Dial Calibration. I would recommend that the KSB2 option be made functional before aligning the KSB2 filters. 73, Don W3FPR On 8/1/2012 12:45 AM, ingerassocia...@cox.net wrote: > I recently purchased this K2/10 (S/N 1848) from the original owner/builder. > It is built with very good craftsmanship, and includes the noise blanker and > 160-m modules. [Elecraft] KX3(KIT) BATTERY COMPARTMENT SCREWS & OTHER COMMENTS
I installed the longer screws (2-56 5/16th zinc flat head) tonight for the battery compartment and they went in as though they were designed that way (which they should have been). It remains to be seen how well the shorter screws and/or enlarged holes necessary to accommodate them will hold up in the future from repeated battery replacements. My guess is that over time the shorter screws will either pull out of the standoffs through thread-stripping, or the flat-head screws will pull out of the holes in the plastic base. Hopefully neither, but I wouldn't be surprised if there aren't reflector posts to that effect in the future. The antenna lead could have been a quarter-inch longer. That is one very taut wire going to J1 on the KXAT3 board. I agree with an earlier builder who suggested replacing the white plastic screw foot-pads with small rubber stick-ons for flat-plane operating. I was unable to generate enough signal out of the XG2 to null the opposite sideband signal, but the -33 dBm from the XG3 was perfect and resulted in a total-null on both the S-meter and my ears. I ignored the directions (since rescinded) to the contrary and installed the speaker cloth. I can detect no distortion from speaker or case vibration, and am surprised at the quality of that little speaker. Only one little stand-off was missing from the parts bag which slowed assembly down by three days, plus the four days on the screws. All totaled . . . maybe three hours build-time. For a decade now I have been saying, with each subsequent purchase, that this will have to be my last Elecraft . . . the desk is getting too small and I'm getting too old. But it's equally clear that Kool-Aid stays in the tissues an awfully long time. Sincere congratulations to the entire team on yet another excellent product. 73, Kent Trimble, K9ZTV Jefferson City, MO __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] For Sale: Elecraft K2 - 10 Watt Version
I recently purchased this K2/10 (S/N 1848) from the original owner/builder. It is built with very good craftsmanship, and includes the noise blanker and 160-m modules. Additionally, a partially built (90%) SSB module and an unbuilt ATU module is included. The ATU module is missing several components and hardware, all of which are readily and inexpensively available from Elecraft. I have made a complete list of all the AWOL parts. I have a set of prewound toroids from the “Toroid Guy” for the SSB and ATU modules that will be included in the package (A $30 value by itself). All manuals are also included. The radio looks great and is totally unmolested. The only problem is that the display is off frequency by varying amounts depending on the band. I’m sure that the frequency calibration procedure, as outline in the manual, will solve this problem. I will also include an alternate calibration method passed on to my by Gary Surrency of Elecraft. Unfortunately family issues and work priorities would require me to “back burner” the completion of the modules and tuning up the radio for several months. I’m lucky right now to turn on my K3 for an hour or two a week. The above package is available for $380 plus shipping. Re: [Elecraft] P3 Vfo Blips
A drop of DeOxit on it [shield and center pin, both ends] and several removal/insertions cured mine. Also, make sure the P3 chassis screws are tight, and the chassis is directly bonded to the K3. I may put a ground post on my P3 to take it to the ground bus right behind the rigs. The other note is that I originally ran without the K3 IF Level mod, and when I calibrated the P3 and K3 S-Meter with my service monitor, I ended up with fairly high gain in the P3, and quite a few anomalous blips and such. Doing the mod got the gain back to normal and all is well. 73 Fred K6DGW On 8/1/2012 3:08 AM, Jack Berry wrote: > I saw this for the first time a few weeks ago. Re: [Elecraft] K144XV Utility for Mac (Repost)
Well, as JC Fogerty said in his "Stuck in Lodi Again" tune: things got tough, then things got worse… It turns out that VMWARE Fusion is worthless for trying to run the K144XV application under Win/XP. They send "serial port" data to a file, instead of to the USB bus. Wonderful. Two folks recommended using the $59 program "CrossOver" from CodeWeavers. They've got a 14 day free trial, so I thought I give it a shot. Installed their program and then installed the K144XV DOS utility. But, now I'm stuck - no idea how to define a COM port for this thing to use. The K3, P3, and KPA500 Utilities work fine with the Elecraft Serial-->USB cable, so I know I've got a working connection. Anyone know how to do this? Sounds like there is some slight imbalance in your roofing filter settings. I suggest you go through the alignment procedure to minimise this image (see the owner's manual, looking under "Receive Sideband" heading in the Calibration section). [Elecraft] KX3 New Radio Observations
After a couple of days of using my new KX3 all seems to function quite nicely. My only gripe is the SSB receive audio seems rough at times. This is with external or internal speaker or headset. Internal speaker seems worse as I would expect. Audio seems better with roofing filter out of circuit(FL1). Doing an A/B with the K3 , the K3 is of course fine. Anyone got comments about this? I've tried different agc threshold levels, etc. Another observationwhen tuning across a single carrier(XG1) in ssb mode with FL2, I notice that a second fairly strong tone appears as I tune away(higher pitch) from the original. Switching to FL1 the new tone disappears. Anyone else notice this? Maybe it's an artifact of the conversion scheme and normal?? This is not there in cw mode. 73, John N1JM -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/KX3-New-Radio-Observations-tp7560100.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] KX3 Utility for Mac conversion to Cocoa. Need testers.
I'm in the process of converting the Mac versions of the Elecraft Utilities from the Carbon API to Cocoa. I have completed the KX3 Utility conversion. The changes are extensive and almost every control in the application required some modification. Advantages to using Cocoa: 1) Accessibility - The main motivation for the conversion is to provide complete support for accessibility applications used by the visually impaired (such as VoiceOver). 2) Better keyboard support - If desired, the program can now be controlled entirely from the keyboard without having to touch the mouse. 3) Appearance - Although subtle, the Cocoa controls have a more Mac-centric appearance. 4) Apple has declared the Carbon APIs deprecated in OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion (although Carbon apps will still run fine on Mountain Lion). I need Mac users with a KX3 that are willing to do some *thorough* testing, including testing with VoiceOver, to contact me off list. I need all parts of the program tested. Once I get all of the kinks worked out of the KX3 Utility, I'll move on to converting the K3 Utility. Thanks and 73! I'd recommend Crossover as well. It's a little strange to set up, but once done, it does a nice job. I use it to run Echolink. 73 de Ray K2ULR On Jul 31, 2012, at 9:04 AM, W4ATK wrote: > Bill, > > Check out CrossOver. Bill, Check out CrossOver. It is a $59.95 app from CodeWeavers that sets up a PC based program to run on a Mac. There is no requirement for Windows. I have used it for the following things so far, JT65-HF, EZNEC2 antenna design software, RS91 Icom Programming software, and lastly CWGet Morse decoder. If you are using a com port, as you would be, you will need to create a Unix type link to associate the COMx number to a USB/serial driver, very easy. Re: [Elecraft] K144XV Utility for Mac (Repost)
Jim, This utility seems to be the only one where Elecraft is Windows-only with no apparent plans to change. I discovered the same last year looking for the linux version, when Elecraft support recommended using a virtual host. :-( The easiest solution I found was installing VirtualBox (free) and then installing Windows XP in it, but you do need an XP installation disc. (At work, as soon as desktop PCs are bought for email/web, the Windows os is replaced with linux so we have many old XP, Vista, 7 cd 'frisbees'.) [Elecraft] OT: PLT latest
Please forgive this intrusion into the Elecraft reflector, but it is an issue of international importance (not just Europe) for all radio amateurs to protect the spectrum from pollution. The RSGB is about to release the statement below and it would appear that PLT lobbyists will get their way unless we can otherwise persuade them. David G3UNA RSGB EMCC update on PLT prEN50561-1 In 2011 a PLT EMC standard known as prEN 50561-1 was proposed by CENELEC. The proposed PLT standard was rejected by a majority of the National Standards Committees (NCs) of the EU countries who approve all new standards. Many NCs made comments to help improve the proposed standard, some comments questioned the very high radio pollution levels that would be permitted from PLT devices. Other comments would have helped to improve the test methodology. Usually in these situations the CENELEC committee preparing the proposed standard would take note and make changes that reflect the comments with the aim of achieving full consensus of all stakeholders. A revised version of the PLT standard is about to be circulated, to be voted on by the NCs. For all intents and purposes we believe it is identical to the previous rejected standard. The valuable and helpful comments from the NCs have essentially been ignored. Representatives of PLT manufacturers dominate the CENELEC Working Group 11 (WG11) that wrote the proposed standard. PLT manufacturers have been aggressively lobbying members of the NCs to approve the standard as it would provide a legal basis for high PLT emission levels. The EU Commission's EMC advisor who is responsible for ensuring that all EU EMC standards comply with the EMC Directive has stated that the proposed PLT standard does not meet the Essential Requirements of the EMC Directive and notified CENELEC. However, CENELEC has decided to ignore the advice of the EU EMC advisor and continue with putting the proposed PLT standard out for voting by the NCs. Should prEN 50561-1 be voted through by the National Committees it risks meaning that manufacturers of virtually any new device or product will want to use the very high radio pollution levels allowed by prEN 50561-1, claiming it as a precedent. An example case being the invertors used to connect solar cells to the grid where a proposed standard will allow pollution levels similar to PLT but at all frequencies so no amateur band notches (a "notch" is a range of frequencies where the transmit power of the PLT device is reduced). Other products that could take advantage of this precedent include LED lighting. In effect, the proposed PLT standard will make the provisions of the EMC Directive irrelevant. It's not just HF but higher radio frequencies too are at risk from what will be legally sanctioned pollution. Wireline services could also become victims, new high speed DSL technologies such as G.fast could also have issues due to PLT pollution being coupled from power cables to phone cables. There is only a very short time window to take action to prevent what will be an EMC disaster, many National Committees will vote early, due to the summer vacations. It is absolutely critical that anyone who values unpolluted radio spectrum urgently takes the following actions; . Contact your national amateur radio society and ask what they are doing. . Find out who is on your NC, contact them and explain the situation, it is important that they understand that the proposed PLT standard sets a precedent and its approval could lead to widespread spectrum pollution. . Get the word out, forward this statement to your local message boards and radio clubs. . When you have a QSO ask other European amateurs if they have heard about this issue. There is a great deal of "disinformation" being spread by PLT lobbyists, some of the statements that have been made are clarified below; PLT claim: Notching will protect the Amateur Bands Reality: The depth of the notch will depend on how linear the power network is. Resonances in cabling resulting in high voltage levels of the PLT signals combined with non-linear components in devices such as switched mode power supplies, can lead to the notches "filling in" with "hash" type noise which is difficult to identify as PLT. PLT claim: Ratification of EN50561-1 will protect the Amateur Bands Reality: In the same way that PLT manufacturers now flout EN55022 they will be able to flout EN50561-1. It is just that the motivation will be less - at least until the next scheme for increasing data rate comes along. The only aspects of the new Standard that can be verified in the field by National Enforcement Agencies (such as OFCOM in the UK) are the maximum transmit level and the positions of the Notching Band edges. Within the new Standard the maximum transmit level is set at a higher level than today's typical PLT transmit power levels, and the notched frequencies follow today's practice as set by l
