Re: [Elecraft] Lightning damage here
Don, Really sorry to hear that. I empathize. We lost two major appliances late June when the Derecho hit Virginia with 75 mph winds and a lightning show like I haven't seen in many years. That lightning hit was not direct, but we heard the snap in the house. It came through a wall receptacle in the family room and literally blew a hole in the hardwood floor. Luckily, all my radio and computer equipment was spared, I think, due to my running around the house, as the storm approached, and unplugging everything I could and having greatly improved my grounding system based upon many a good discussion here on this reflector. We got hit, again last night and my vertical took a hit (I saw it), it blew out the gas discharge protectors I had in-line and the 2 inch grounding strap at outside copper bus plate is black and melted. But, I also had solid 2 AWG going from that plate to ground ( 8 rods, one every four feet). Re: [Elecraft] Software CW in K3 and KX3 and contesting
That RUMped works well with KX3 software scheme means that it can be done. Even if not perfect, this would stop taking other interfaces/CW keyers, cables, etc. If KX3 is small but extra boxes take twice as much space, how good is it? So it seems that there are 3 approaches to contest CW with KX3: 1. Extra keyers 2. Changes to contest packages 3. Modified USB/serial cable (most likely) For the last point, it seems that KX3 control port is just serial port with RX/TX at 4800 baud, changeable to 38.4k. If one has a plain USB/serial cable, one needs to concoct two cables: one for RX/TX and the other for CW, possibly with a transistor buffer. I am not sure whether something like this has been suggested in another thread. 4. Option 3 made as new cable by Elecraft. Option 2 is best IMHO for KX3 followed by 4 if we convince Elecraft (or third party) to do it. [Elecraft] KX3 and powerful SSB
My KX3 came yesterday. I used a small, extremely bassy, computer microphone. Used TX eq to cut basses and boost 1.6k and 2.4k. Used speech processing of 10 and 20. Very nice output when monitored on K3; the monitor of KX3 sounded different (too sharp). Worked a number of Europeans. Max speech processing (30) seemed to generated the best reports. I will do more tests but most likely KX3 excels as SSB radio. Also any mic works. PTT not much needed as VOX is there and manual PTT too. I will do more tests today. It seems that 10W in KX3 may be as good as 50W in radios without good processor/equalizer. Re: [Elecraft] Software CW in K3 and KX3 and contesting
RUMPed/RUMLog is unique because it is written for Apple by one person for his own use/his own equipment. It does not support the Windows environment and multiple transceiver protocols. Tom can concentrate on optimizing operation with the K3 (and KX3 to the extent it works the same as the K3). 2. Changes to contest packages While I can't say for Win-Test, I have often heard developers for the other packages say they will not support a CW over CAT interface as it is simply not cost effective given the limited number of rigs that it would serve and the need to do multiple versions to support Elecraft, Kenwood, and the limited number of Icom models with similar capability. All of the big three and most other contest *and* day to day loggers support CW by DTR and WinKey. 73, ... Hi Thomas: Excellent idea. And, it also brings up the point that if one sells an Elecraft product to someone else, it would be a proper gesture to notify Elecraft of the new owner's name and contact info, so that there is a record of the new ownership. Re: [Elecraft] {K3 KX3} Software CW in K3 and KX3 and contesting
Ultimatic is an absolutely wonderful keying mode (and the only one I can use with dual lever paddles). It gives priority to the last paddle closed. In other words, close the dah lever, and you get dahs - but then close the dot lever, and you then get dots even though both paddles are now closed. No alternating nonsense. 73, Don W3FPR On 8/10/2012 9:49 AM, Ignacy wrote: You write K3 keyer does not provide all of the functionality of the WinKey, a case in point being the Ultimatic keying mode. [Elecraft] K3 RF Feedback
Started getting RF feedback on 40m. Found that by moving the microphone socket on the K3's front panel I could make the problem come and go. Suspecting a shield earth problem I made a solder connection between the loop of tinned copper wire and the socket metal shield. For extra security I soldered a length of small copper braid between the shield and the GND via on the PCB. Hello Greg, I built mine in two days… But I would not suggest doing that. I'd say, the fastest you should go might be: Front panel: One session. Filter board: One session. RF board: Two sessions. Auto tuner: One session. Tuning testing: One session. So, at one session (a few hours) per day, I would say six days is reasonable. Re: [Elecraft] OT: Pets in the Shack
Hi Guys, Back in my Commodore-64 days I used to run Digicom which was a German Packet program. One night my cat PJ slept on the keyboard. This program would transmit anytime a key was pushed. My cat sent endless rows of various letters and numbers all night long. I printed a few pages out and sent them to my buddy in Montana and explained what had happened. A few days later I received in the mail printouts from his Digicom station that were simular. Naturally, being cats, they climb all over the place including my operating position. [Elecraft] KDSP2 Audio Filters
I recently constructed and installed the KDSP2 in my K2. I installed it after I had installed and aligned the KSB2 using Spectrogram. I notice that the KDSP2 seems to work wonderful in CW, but when I am listening to SSB signals the audio sounds as if it is passing through a tin can. I saw in another post a discussion on adjusting the AF1..AF4 in addition to the FL1..FL4. Is this done using CAL FIL or must this be done within the KDSP2 menus settings? I saw the following post on adjusting the KDSP2 audio filters, but the process to use is not obvious to me: /You do it just the way you would without the DSP unit. First select the pitch you want to have at the center of the filter. I use about 550 Hz here. Then adjust the KDSP2 for the narrowest setting you want to use, say 100 Hz, centered on the pitch you have selected. Now do the adjustments to the crystal filter at its narrowest bandwidth until you see the most even symmetrical passband curve. Now step the DSP unit to the next wider bandwidth you want, and do the same for the crystal filter. Again adjust the crystal filter for the best looking curve at that bandwidth. Keep doing this up to the widest bandwidth of the crystal and DSP filters. For convenience I use the same bandwidth in both filters at a given selection setting--XF1=AF1, XF2=AF2, etc. Good luck and 73 Bob N6WG The Little Station with Attitude / Thanks, Fred, KC9QQ -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/KDSP2-Audio-Filters-tp7560765.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] K3: Setting up WriteLog software to toggle KDVR3
Hi Fred, The number between Rig and Command must be your COM port number. So if you are using COM 1 for the K3 then all four of your macros should say Rig1Command(xx). (I don't know if a Microham interface affects this situation). Also, make sure your macro definitions are in the correct writelog.ini file. I know there are true ini files and mirror image ini files. I run Vista and my ini file is in the Windows directory but this may not be true for all operating systems. Be very careful. Jim Brown wrote: Can you explain note v? Hi Jim, Footnote 'v' (on the 2-kHz IMD) actually refers to a measurement at a 1-kHz spacing, which is not part of the comparison table: v: At 1 kHz, performance is opposite-sideband rejection limited. As you know, a quadrature direct-conversion receiver (such as the KX3 or the Flex radios) depends on gain/phase balance to suppress the opposite-sideband signal. What Rob is referring to, here, is that when you do an IMDDR3 test at a very close offset (say 1 kHz), with the roofing filters enabled (i.e., using a zero I.F.), then the opposite- sideband signal might dominate the measurement. (This depends on the relationship between the interfering signal and the desired signal.) In his case this limited the measurement to an equivalent DR of 65 dB. Our main goal for the KX3 was to provide maximum portability yet all- band/all-mode coverage. If your goal is to get the absolute best DR at very close spacings, then the K3 would be the better choice, given its narrow crystal filters and nearly infinite opposite sideband rejection. I'll expand on this topic later. 73, Wayne N6KR __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] KX3 and K3 Performance (and the Sherwood Table)
You may have noticed that Rob Sherwood, NC0B, has added the KX3 to his receiver performance table (http://www.sherweng.com/table.html). Rob's test procedure is very similar to our own, so we're not surprised to see these excellent results. Both the K3 and KX3 are near the top of the chart. Like other receivers in this range, they can handle crowded band conditions. But the two rigs have completely different receiver architectures, with different strengths. The KX3 uses an architecture similar to many PC-based SDRs (software defined radios), with direct conversion to base-band (AF) or to a very low I.F. This architecture takes fewer components than a multi- conversion superhet, facilitating a low-current, ultra-portable implementation. That was our primary goal for the KX3. It also allows us to provide a direct sound-card output for use with SDR programs such as HDSDR that offer a panadapter (spectral display) and other features. (The K3 is also an SDR, in that the DSP and MCU code can be quickly and easily udpated to add new modulation/demodulation techniques, etc. However, adding a spectral display to the K3 requires other hardware, such as the P3 panadapter.) In contrast, the K3 uses a classic superhet architecture: it down- converts to a medium I.F. (in this case 8.2 MHz), where it is possible to use very narrow crystal filters. With an appropriate narrow filter selected, the K3 can provide extremely high dynamic range at close spacings. Its crystal filters and 15-kHz second I.F. provide nearly infinite opposite-sideband rejection, as well as very high blocking dynamic range. If you're considering purchasing a K3 or KX3, but you're not sure which one would be best for you, I'd offer this advice: If you plan to do a lot of portable operation, or have limited space at home, the KX3 is ideal. If you want the absolute best possible close-in dynamic range performance in contest or pile-up conditions (under 2 kHz spacing), go with the K3. The K3 also has an internal 100-W amplifier option. The KX3's 100-W amp will be external--well suited to a mobile installation, for example. 73, Wayne N6KR __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] {K3 KX3} Software CW in K3 and KX3 and contesting
Yay! I second that motion, Don! I've been a fan of Ultimatic mode since it first came out in QST as a vacuum tube keyer from a W6 in the mid-50s. Later I built the transistorized version that was in QST in the early 60s. But nothing's as easy as building a WinKeyer kit with it in it! Steve did all the heavy lifting. Ultimatic mode also includes dot or dash insertion. Make a Q, for instance, by holding the dash lever closed through the entire character formation and flick the dot lever after the start of the second dash to insert the single dot. It's nice to have the K3's built-in keyer when going portable. But -- like Don -- I have a lot of trouble using the Iambic algorithms with dual-lever paddles, so at the home station I use a WK2 and when I'm traveling I use a single-lever paddle. Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Sherwood RX Test Numbers Posted
Jim, This is my understanding of note v: The KX3 is a direct conversion architecture, and relies of the I Q signals to cancel out opposite sideband. For this cancellation to work, the balance of amplitude and phase needs to be very precise, and it looks like Elecraft have managed to get the image to be 65dB down, which is very good. Based on the note v comment, it seems for the case of CW, this image will normally occur 1kHz away from the desired signal. If you have a close-in signal 1kHz away, then what you can do is enable 8kHz shift, which means the image is now 16 kHz away. Now the close-in dynamic range is 96dB, since the roofing filter can't be used with the 8kHz IF. Of course, if you are unlucky enough to have a strong signal 16kHz away (on the other side of your LO), then this signal will be down 65dB. 73, Matt VK2ACL On 11/08/2012, at 5:39 AM, Jim Brown j...@audiosystemsgroup.com wrote: Great numbers! In real world operating, it is an indicator of how much a signal 1 kHz away will interfere with the desired signal you are trying to copy. Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft] {K3 KX3} Software CW in K3 and KX3 and contesting
Will, The distinguishing characteristic is that it does not alternate between dits and dahs. You are correct, that a dingle dot insertion can work the same way in either case, and by the same reasoning, a single dash insertion. but if you send a character like Z, you close the DAH paddle and get the first DAH off, then after the 2nd DAH starts, close the DIT paddle (you do not have to take your finger off the DAH paddle) and it will begin sending a string of DITS - get both fingers off the paddle after the 2nd dit has started. Or take the letter B - DAH first, then close the DIT paddle - it does not mater much whether you take your finger off the DAH paddle or not, it will send 3 dits as long as you do not lift the finger from the dit paddle. The last paddle closed takes priority. There are many other examples where Ultimatic is easier - but the timing is not as critical as it is for the Iambic alternating dots and dashes system. I think Iambic was a mistake created by the Curtis chip manufactures and salesmen (OK, I am ignoring the Accukeyer, I admit that) - but the original Ultimatic mode was easier to my mind, and it is more like bug keying that any other keyer mode - except the bug will not do a string of DAHs, only dits. 73, Don W3FPR On 8/10/2012 6:13 PM, Mercury wrote: Maybe I'm missing something, Bud, but I send the letter Q the same way with Iambic B keying. Re: [Elecraft] Software CW in K3 and KX3 and contesting
Hi, Will -- Q was probably not the best choice I could have used to distinguish between the two modes. My biggest problem with Iambic and a dual-lever paddle is the number 2, which I do have to send occasionally:-) It typically comes out as dit-dit-dah-dit-dah. For me, at least, I think the crux of the difference between the two algorithms is that I can be sloppier about when I get my thumb or fingers off the first lever squeezed on a large number of characters, such as the A, W, J, 1 and N, D, B, 6 families. This timing becomes increasingly critical as sending speed increases. For instance, I can send a 2 quite consistently using dual-lever Iambic at slow speeds. I freely admit that my difficulties with Iambic may be influenced by the characteristics of keyers I first used, prior to introduction of the Iambic algorithm. In other words, if your first electronic keyer was Iambic, you may not have as much trouble as I with it. An aside: One of those early keyers I loved, the POO-keyer from K2POO, was a (vacuum tube!) dash priority or dash override design -- not so much by deliberate design, perhaps, as by the reaction of the analog circuit to having dot and dash contacts simultaneously closed. Ultimately (get that?), I think the answer is this: If you're perfectly happy with the Iambic algorithm in conjunction with a dual-lever paddle, and it's making good characters for you, or if you use only a single-lever paddle, stick with the Iambic. If it's giving you fits, however, an Ultimatic keyer might be just the ticket for you. Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft] {K3 KX3} Software CW in K3 and KX3 and contesting
Guys, I'd like to point out that the transition being made when electronic keyers started coming on line was: BUG ---KEYER What was being solved is not having to make all those dashes manually. That in itself was a huge help. Transmitting speeds could be increased 20% or more. Many guys at that time could copy way faster than they could send. For most of us, the first electronic keyer paddles were bugs with the dit arm constrained (rubber band). Yeah you could HB something. You supplied all the timing between dots and dashes. Modes like Iambic et al came about when somebody thought a bit out of the box: Would two levers make things easier? (for others maybe, not for me) I'm not sure whether iambic or dual levers keys came first. Obviously one couldn't work without the other. Don't forget the Cootie key! 73 Brian/K3KO On 8/10/2012 22:52, Don Wilhelm wrote: Will, The distinguishing characteristic is that it does not alternate between dits and dahs. [Elecraft] KX3 BETA firmware release (rev 1.12)
KX3 beta firmware rev 1.12 (with DSP rev 0.94) is now available. See release notes below. You'll need the KX3 Utility application to download and install firmware. For full instructions, refer to our KX3 software page: http://www.elecraft.com/KX3/KX3_software.htm 73, Wayne N6KR * * * MCU 1.12, 7-25-2012 * MIN SUPPLY VOLTAGE NOW 7.5 V (was 8.0): Increases operating time when using an 8-cell NiMH battery pack. Recommended max power output is 3 W when operating from less than 9 volts, although 5 watts is possible in most cases. * KEY OUT (ACC2) FOLLOWS CW DELAY SETTING: Prevents excessive switching of external equipment being keyed by the KX3’s KEY OUT line. Set desired delay using DLY switch. * VOX AUTO-OFF OPTION AT POWER-UP: Tap '4' in CW WGHT menu entry to select VOX NOR or VOX AUTO OFF. With AUTO OFF selected, VOX for CW, voice, and audio-based data modes will all be disabled on power-up. * IMPROVED HANDLING OF UNINTENTIONAL KEYING ON POWER-UP: Includes two new error messages: ERR VOX (voice or audio-data mode VOX was activated) and ERR ACP (PTT was activated via the ACC2 jack with the given setting of the ACC2 IO menu entry). In the ERR VOX case, VOX is turned off. In the ERR ACP case, ACC2 IO is set to OFF. * UP/DN MIC FUNCTIONS DISABLED IN AF DATA MODES: In this case the user will have a PC audio cable, not an MH3, plugged in at the mic jack. Eliminates the need to change the MIC BTN menu setting when switching from voice to audio data modes. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] NR of my dreams
When the new firmware 4.51 came out there were some postings commenting on the improvement in the NR. However, I didn't really pay attention. The previous versions of NR had proven to be of little use with the particular kind of noises that plague my QTH, so I hadn't even turned on NR for months. I am almost entirely a CW op and have had no occasion to try the NR on SSB until tonight. The D64 station has been on CW, easy enough to work, but tonight he is on 17 meter phone. I tuned to his frequency and I could tell that he was talking, but he was buried in atmospheric noises. NB did little good, and I was about to give up and go watch the Olympics when I thought to try NR. Magic! Using the same settings I had left over from the previous firmware version (5--1) the noise just disappeared, and the op's voice came loud and clear in my phones. Big improvement. This promises to be a boon to my operations. Thanks very very much to all who worked on this! Re: [Elecraft] OT: Pets in the Shack
Fred, I was very glad that all my ham equipment had dummy loads connected 2 nights ago - we had a thunderstorm, and a very close lightning event. Many circuit breakers tripped, 4 computers died, and I had to replace the network router and all switches as well as the NAS storage device I use as a file server. No data was lost, but I am in limp-along condition until I can get the file server up and running. The strike apparently was mostly confined to the Ethernet connection, although it took out a printer locally attached to my computer too. The network is back up and running and I am waiting for a couple of replacement computers for critical places in the network - the other two (media center and ham shack) will wait for a bit because I do not view them as critical. The bottom line is that it did not hurt any of the ham gear. 73, Don W3FPR On 8/10/2012 8:19 PM, Fred Jensen wrote: Sometimes, it seems like my dummy load is my best antenna. 73, Fred K6DGW __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] K3 and EasyPal
I have a question for any EasyPal users out there I am using my K3 to send digital images with EasyPal with great success but Id like to simplify my world since many EasyPal users talk about the images being sent between pictures I find that I have to manually change between DIGI-A and SSB manually before and after sending. sure I could send with the rig in SSB but this would not be good as it would include any EQ and signal processing I have set up for the mic. Id like to change modes automatically when I transmit images to do this could I use EasyPal CAT PTTIs there anyone that has done this successfully using. The CAT setup menu in EasyPal has Initial string and exit string. are these sent at the start of each transmission? or at the initial launch of easypal? I was thinking of using this to send a mode change command at the start and end of each picture. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Re: [Elecraft] Sherwood ranking
On behalf of the entire staff, I'll take this as a meta-compliment :) Wayne On Aug 10, 2012, at 9:19 PM, Phil Hystad wrote: Wayne, Thanks for the summary. Actually, the column that makes the most sense and the one that should rank first in ordering is the name of the company providing the rig and Elecraft comes first in that ordering because of course it starts with the letter E which is the most frequently occurring letter in general English prose. 73, phil, K7PEH __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Sherwood RX Test Numbers Posted
Eric, I was under the impression the the KX3 would not perform as well as the K2, but would be a better trail radio with some gee whiz features. Looks like you guys over-achieved.
