Re: [Elecraft] Info 080 message started with RF Alignment and Test, Part II
I guess I said it wrong - I was referring to the VCO Test in Part 2 for the RF Board. After the PLL Reference Oscillator Test, I changed bands to 80 meters and was about to adjust frequency to 4000.10 when the Info 080 message popped up again. As I stated, when using CAL FCTR the frequency I found at this point (after the Info 080 message had appeared) was around 10800.00 - slightly above the 8 to 10 MHz range specified. However, it was fairly stable. After attempting another 456 reset this afternoon, the Info 080 message persists, just like it did before, with the same 0.00 frequency reading, and the same last character that looks like a 2 missing one segment (not a c). Additionally, something I didn't mention before but had happened before as well, when the Info 080 message appears at this stage, the LCD appears to default, or revert, to the day setting - the green backlight goes out. It just feels like a hardware issue to me, from what I've experienced with computer troubleshooting in the past. The same exact problems appeared at the same exact point in the tests...and everything else, test wise, had worked fine up until this point. The problem for me is that I'm not nearly knowledgeable enough about the circuits involved, or what individual components in the circuits do, to know where the actual issue lies... -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/Info-080-message-started-with-RF-Alignment-and-Test-Part-II-tp7564545p7564703.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Okay, did that. (Lacking a signal generator, I skipped the Receive tracing, but I can try to find one and go back and do that if necessary.) I did up through the ALC section successfully -- VPWR is 4.925. All following values are measured with key-down. RF probe values tend to be higher than expected -- for Xmit mixer, I get: 2. Xmit Mixer Output: Expected 0.016 Vrms, actual 0.220 3. Buffer Output: Expected 0.200, actual 1.52 (ratio is 6.9) 4. Band-Pass Filter Output: Expected 0030, actual 0.046 5. T-R Switch #1 Output: Expected 0.029, actual 0.032 Pre-driver, Driver and PA 1. Pre-Driver Output (Q5): Expected 0.120 Vrms, actual: 3.25 (or sometimes 1. I checked this several times, I can't explain it) 2. Driver Input (Q6) : Expected 0.026, actual 0 3. Driver Output: Expected 1.8, actual 0 It seems that the Q5 output is way higher than expected, and then the driver input is almost zero. I tried to trace the signal between Q5 and Q6 from the top of the board -- pin one of T1 is 3.25 or 1v, pin 3 is 1/3rd of that, and then that reduced signal drops from 3.25v on one side of C121 to 0v on the other side of C121. (Or at least, that's what it looks like from above the board -- is there any way to safely run the radio with the heat sink removed and the transmitter on?) [Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement
Good Evening, It has been quite foggy. I was out collecting wood when I kicked up a grouse. I never saw him but I did see the curlicues forming in the fog where he had passed. From dead silence to a flurry of wings to dead quiet in only a few seconds. With the fog it was possible to tell what happened. With the side band folks injecting lots of ions into the Heaviside layer I expect the CW bands to be better. The sun is also active with one sunspot capable of M and X class flares facing the earth. The other activity we should be aware of is the mixing of two strong storms creating deluge conditions for parts of the East Coast. Hopefully it will neither snow nor will the winds grow too high. [Elecraft] K1 capacitor ID help
Hi Don, Oh OK! That makes sensethe screw is at ground potential and therefore less affected by a screwdriver adjustment. I looked at the schematic and got it all fiqured out. Thanks so much for taking the time to help out a fellow builder. See you on the air soon! Dean K6DDJ Dean, OK, if there is any confusion, use your ohmmeter. Measure the board to determine the lead of the component that is connected to ground - that is the ground side, and then with one ohmmeter lead on the adjustment screw, see which lead is connected to that adjustment screw. Connect the adjustment screw lead to the ground lead on the K2. Note that this will not produce good results for the C27 trimmers.since both these trimmers are not connected to ground - that does require an insulated tool when adjusting either of those capacitors. 73, Don W3FPR On 10/27/2012 7:47 PM, d...@jonemail.com wrote: > Hi Don, > Thanks for answering. Re: [Elecraft] DVR Repeat on LCD display
I have the same complaint as I operate my K3 on the Topband at Multi-Multi station W3LPL. While in the repeat mode, during the pauses, I listen to the sub receivebut with REPEAT constantly being displayed there is no way to know what frequency I am tuning. It would be helpful, if while tuning the REPEAT is replaced with the VFO-B frequency. After a delay after tuning is stopped, the word REPEAT could be re-displayed to remind the op that the K3 was still in that mode. 73, Rich - K1HTV W3LPL 160M op - Original Message - From: elecraft-requ...@mailman.qth.net To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Sat, 27 Oct 2012 12:51:23 - (UTC) Subject: Elecraft Digest, Vol 102, Issue 42 Send Elecraft mailing list submissions to elecraft@mailman.qth.net To subscribe or unsubscribe via the World Wide Web, visit http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft or, via email, send a message with subject or body 'help' to elecraft-requ...@mailman.qth.net You can reach the person managing the list at elecraft-ow...@mailman.qth.net When replying, please edit your Subject line so it is more specific than "Re: Contents of Elecraft digest..." __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] [K2] POWER control has no effect on actual transmit power
Along with what Don Wilhelm suggests, I would also look at all the RF board SMT IC's on daughterboards and see if any of the pins on the IC's themselves are not 100% soldered. I had a similiar problem on my K2, and the problem turned out to be an unsoldered pin. Once it was soldered, and a connection made, the K2 was up and running. 73, David KC9EHQ K2/10 #7164 From: Ben Byer To: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Saturday, October 27, 2012 6:44 PM Subject: [Elecraft] [K2] POWER control has no effect on actual transmit power I've had fun putting together K2 #7373, and am finally at the point of doing the 40-Meter Transmitter Alignment (manual, p.78). I have the unit connected to a 50-ohm dummy load, and am trying to tune L1 and L2 to show 2W on the internal wattmeter. When I press TUNE, the measured power ranges from 0.2W-0.4W. I can adjust the POWER knob to show 0.1W - 15.2W while the unit is idle, so the knob reading circuit works -- but adjusting the knob doesn't change the reported transmit power even slightly (remains 0.2W-0.4W), and neither does adjusting L1 or L2. I suspect that the measurement is correct, because the overall unit power consumption is measured as 11.9V 0.20A when idle, and 0.42-0.44A when in TUNE mode (regardless of what I set POWER to before enabling TUNE -- same result with 0.1W vs 15.2W) I already checked the voltages on RF Q5, Q6, Q7, and all seem reasonable. (Actually, initially I measured 0v on the Q6/Q7 collector during transmit, and discovered that I had swapped two wires on T3. Hi Don, Thanks for answering. The type of capacitor you are describing is like the ones that I mounted on the four band module. Those do have a round body with a flat SIDE to it. These capacitors are completely round but have a little square extension on one end. For lack of a better description, they kind of look like a banjo would look like if you cut the instrument's neck off close to the banjo's body. The round portion has a contact and the end of the cut-off neck has a contact. The body is ceramic and not plastic like the ones on the four band module. I hope this description can help you paint a picture in your mind to help explain what I have here. Re: [Elecraft] [KPA500] Peculiar behavior : possible solution
My observations: The K3 is delivering only the KPA500 drive level power not 100 watts. So at least the K3 "thinks" it is driving the PA in operating mode. The KPA500 has only the first one or 2 power leds lit. The PA has the *. I think that indicates key is being generated. Mine does this about 1 or 2% of the time and only for the First QSO. I have had the issue after starting the K-Line sequentially, i.e. K3 boots first (to the end of the banner), P3 boots (after waiting for SVGA) then I turn on the KPA500; as well as starting all at the same time. I have been using the sequential method for a while now. If it is important to have the KPA500 operating (Net Control), I test it into the dummy to be sure. The failure is very low & my observations are over many times not just one. They could be flawed; but I think not. *Jack, That has been my suspicion since the KPA500FT arrived. I wait till the banner has cleared AND the kpa500 has been acknowledged by the K3. In the early days of testing I noticed this anomaly quite often but since I started to 'wait' for the K-Line to complete 'turn on' the issue has not returned. Re: [Elecraft] Info 080 message started with RF Alignment and Test, Part II
The K2 will not change bands while in CAL FCTR. If you attempt to do that, the result will be the frequency created when the output of the DAC is at zero volts (assuming you tapped the BAND- button), and if you tapped the BAND+ button, the frequency will be that which is produced when the DAC voltage is at its highest. 73, Don W3FPR On 10/27/2012 1:59 PM, AC8HU wrote: > I still really lean towards the fact that the problem reappeared at the > exact same point, down to the precise button press (switching to 80 meters > while in CAL FCTr), suggesting that there's a problem with a component. [Elecraft] cw monitor volume on the KX3 with new beta software
I have uploaded the latest beta software to my KX3 primarily to get the increased cw sidetone monitor volume. After doing this the sidetone level has indeed increased but whenever I turn the KX3 off and back on, I have to reset the monitor level each time. It defaults to a level setting of 10. Re: [Elecraft] Info 080 message started with RF Alignment and Test, Part II
I can't really say for sure that every one of my soldering connections is perfect, there may be one or a couple in there that are still flaky (which is all it would take, obviously). However as far as I can tell, I don't have a consistent problem with soldering. The connections are all shiny, solder flows from the component lead out to the edges of the pads, not in little balls (the few times I've had one of these happen I've taken care of it when it happened). I don't have an iron that I can specifically select a temperature on but it's a 50 watt iron that is adjustable - I have it set probably around 80-85% of full power. I've found if I go higher I actually tend to end up with discolored spots on boards at times - but I don't know the exact temperature. (I thought I vaguely remembered that a 50 watt iron usually was 800 degrees? Maybe not though.) I've used two different types of solder in the process - the first was the end of a spool from Radio Shack that was 60/38/2 silver bearing, and the spool I'm on now is also Radio Shack but 60/40. I still really lean towards the fact that the problem reappeared at the exact same point, down to the precise button press (switching to 80 meters while in CAL FCTr), suggesting that there's a problem with a component. It just seems that since the problem didn't appear randomly along the way but at the same exact moment, it wouldn't just be a solder connection. A poor solder connection would be prone to going out at any moment and the odds of it doing it the exact same time? -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/Info-080-message-started-with-RF-Alignment-and-Test-Part-II-tp7564545p7564673.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Could be that is what is happening. I know I usually turn on the Astron, the K3 and the KPA500 (but leave the KPA500 in STBY (just out of habit). Usually I am hunting DX, so after I hear a station I want to contact, I usually flip on the KPA500 to OPER and then call, sometimes rather fast. I don't do much SSB but when I do I get 10 dB peak compression with the CMP set at 12. I use a Heil Proset with the electret mic I got from Elecraft. I regularly get unsolicited comments of "really good audio." My TX equalizer is set to the "K9YC recommendations." Re: [Elecraft] Info 080 message started with RF Alignment and Test, Part II
You apparently have the new VFO encoder with the PC board that has a few components on it. Not only the encoder board, but the Control Board leads in the area indicated must be flush cut (flush with the board). Your tape will provide a temporary fix, but I suggest you do a good job of flush cutting the leads (including ICs because the cut leads may eventually punch through the tape and cause problems later). As for the Info 080 messages, refer to my prior responses especially the connectors and RF board R64 and Control Board R6. The zero voltage at the left end of R30 is due to a problem in the VFO Range Select area (see the schematic for the relays and capacitors involved). It seems that you are having soldering problems in general. Turn your soldering temperature up to 750 degF and look critically at each solder connection. The solder should flow out to an almost invisible edge on both the solder pad and the component lead and result in a concave solder fillet. If your solder connections are convex (or look more like 'balls'), then the connection did not receive enough heat. Several builders have this problem because they remember the old days when soldering irons did not have temperature control and the result was lifted solder pads and heat damaged components. That is not the case today with temperature controlled irons and components rated for up to 10 seconds of soldering temperatures. I suggest you re-flow the soldering on all the K2 boards that you have assembled - watch the solder as it flows, and if it does not fill the solder pad, add a small bit of solder. In some cases, you may have to use solder wick to remove excess solder and then solder that connection anew. Use a soldering temperature of 750 degF or higher. After the re-soldering exercise, go through the alignment procedures again. 73, Don W3FPR On 10/27/2012 2:06 AM, AC8HU wrote: > Well I thought I was going to be coming on to post what I'd found with the > VFO problem...but now, the Info 080 is back. [Elecraft] AT-600 Pro Autotuner issue resolved
thanks to everyone who commented on my post. After reading everything sent to me, I reviewed my options. The reason I selected to use a 1:1 current balun instead of a 4:1 balun was based on an application note from the DX Engineering web site... http://static.dxengineering.com/global/images/chartsguides/c/choosing-the-correct-balun.pdf so after thinking over what I had, I tried adding a 3 foot length of coax to the lead from the balun to the station. now the tuner is capable of tuning to 1.5:1 max on all the bands, and on 40 and 80 it also got better... Note that there is still a high VSWR on the coax feed from the balun to the tuner, so this length should be as short as possible. Re: [Elecraft] K3-PR10
Thanks to all of you who have came forward to my statement supporting the need for the preamp for 10m. My only point was my FTDX-5000's receiver and preamps were better than my K3's and did better on weak signal work on 10m. That said I was proud to have the 2 best radios on the market how can anyone go wrong with that. Both are nice radios and each has features and are superior in ways to the other. I wish I could combine both together a lot of the time but.I have pretty much settled on my K3's not because they were the top performing in every way but they fit my operating better at this time and I really like the small package (most of the time). I did not own a single Elecraft item in March of this year, till I bought a partial built K2/100 & KAT100 kit that was not working at that stage (page 41) and had been sitting for 3 years. It had quite a few options and the ones it didn't have I added till it was fully loaded. Ended up sending it to Don and he found the problem.
