[Elecraft] HF Antenna: was G5RV

2013-02-16 Thread Edward R Cole

I have found that resonant antennas work best for me: on HF or VHF+.

I have a 80/40m dual inverted-V with apex at 45-feet and 80m ends at
22-feet that works very well out to 800-miles (so I would consider it
good NVIS and moderately good for longer distance). It is fed with a
current balun and coax cable. I use a MFJ-945E tuner to improve
matching off center frequency: 3920 & 7150 KHz. Some years ago I had
a 252-foot 160m dipole, but it was too close to ground for a decent
radiation angle (top loaded verticals seem better for the top band).

Before setting up my Hygain TH3mk4 triband yagi, I also used a 20m
dipole. I have a 10m/6m dual-band J-Pole which is resonant on my
favored frequencies and again can be tuned using the antenna tuner to
extend off frequency.

I use a 43x122-foot Inverted-L with base loading coil on 502-KHz. I
plan to try tuning it for 160m, as well. The antenna is resonant
with base-loading over a 5-KHz bw, although extremely short on 600m
(quarter wave = 490-feet); radiation resistance =0.8 ohms.

Thus I avoid high SWR on transmission lines (<3.5:1).

73, Ed - KL7UW
I run 100w on 502-KHz, and up to 270w on 160-10m using either the K3 or KX3.

But not as a PTT signal (that was the question). DIGOUT1 is either permanently

Re: [Elecraft] Pigtail for K3

2013-02-16 Thread Dick Dievendorff
Do you mean the adapter that plugs into the K3 panel and splits provides a
3.5 mm mono microphone jack and a 1/4" mono footswitch jack?

That's a Heil Sound AD-1 K. Any dealer that stocks the Heil product line
should carry it, here's one:

http://www.hamradio.com/detail.cfm?pid=H0-003264

The picture should show a red bead rather than the pale blue bead shown.
There are different colored "beads" to distinguish the various adapters for
Kenwood, Icom, Yaesu, etc.

The red "Kenwood" adapter is fine for the Elecraft K3.

Often the adapter is included with Heil headphones. The Elecraft Proset-K2
Headset (by Heil Sound) includes one.

[Elecraft] usb to serial adapter k3 problem

works just fine and other times it goes funky, looses rig control or cw
keying or keying the tx with no power output. When I reboot it sometime
works fine and not other times.

On the elecraft website the usb to serial adapter they sell is currently a
FTDI chipset as they went away from the prolific chip set. Last night when
I experience the problem consistently, I was however able to run the K3
Utility fine with now problems to download the latest k3 firmware.

I am wondering if the solution might be to go to another usb to serial
adapter with the FTDI chipset? Is these a difference between different
brands or models of usb to serial adapter with FTDI chipset?

I also saw online that some people had problems with the KIO3 with in the
K3. Any ideas of what I am up against or how to solve the problems is
greatly appreciated.

Make sure that you have no RF in the shack. If RF is present, it can enter direct in the
K3 or affect the adapter and create problems, which you have described. So keep the RF of
the K3 and the adapter with torroids on the control cable.

[Elecraft] Macros

2013-02-16 Thread Jim Leder (Hotmail)
Had a situation this morning where my two macros started giving me goofy
responses, and eventually would lock up my K3. The K3 still worked OK, and all
was cleared up with a power off/on. I couldn't get the macros to work
consistently, no matter what I tried, including the 'soft' reset'. So, I
reloaded my firmware (4.60) and this apparently corrected the failure. I had
been toying with several different macros and wonder if my playing around
somehow fouled things up. I only have 2 macros: PF1 HOLD to put the rig into CW
and PF2 HOLD to put the rig into FSK. These are simple macros (thanks K1HTV)
and have been working without a hitch, until I attempted to get fancy.

 My questions are:
Is it possible to fill up the macro memory slots, even when they appear empty?
Is there a way to clear/reset ALL the macros without reloading the firmware?
(this seemed to fix my problem)

Additional curiosity: I was getting an FT0 on the terminal screen over and over
of the utility program when things were fouled/locked up. Radio was NOT in
split. I do not have the SR.

The radio and macros are now working as they should, but somehow I am sure I
messed it up somehow. Any ideas?

Thanks...

> Could PTT/Amp Keying be assigned in software to antenna outs?

No, the K3 has only one Key Out signal and that's generated by
hardware (not under control by the processor). However, it's very
easy to build a decoder that uses band data, DIGOUT1, DIGOUT2 and
the XVTR ON signal to select (enable) PTT to various devices.

Re: [Elecraft] Macros

2013-02-16 Thread Jim Leder (Hotmail)
The 2 macros I use work OK since I reloaded the firmware. I tried so many
different, fancy things prior to getting messed up, I'm not sure what they
were now, but it was a lot. That's when I attempted to go back to what I
knew was OK, but they didn't work either. That's when I got desperate and as
a last resort, reloaded the 4.60 firmware.

Here are the two ORIGINAL macros that now work once again:

CW MD3;BW0040;SWH45;MN255; /* PF1 hold */
FSK MD6;DT2;BW0050;SWH47;MN255; /* PF2 hold */

Seems something in the firmware got out of sorts by my screwing around with
those two macros, but I don't know how.

Re: [Elecraft] Macros

2013-02-16 Thread Tom H Childers

I agree with Joe.

I don't use MACRO's, but I do write software that uses the K3 Command
set.

The first thing I see is that you are calling the "MN255" command in
each of the MACROs. The MN command is only needed if you are
accessing the menu to change a setting, and you are not doing any
changes to the menu, so you can remove "MN255 from your MACRO's.

The rest of the commands look OK, but I suggest you create your
MACRO's using the K3 Utility. If you do that you can test MACRO's
until they work as you want them to.

Good luck.

Jim,

Why are you re-doing the macro in a continuous loop?
More specific, why do you have the SWH45 and SWH47 included in the macro.
If you assign the first macro to PF1, and then initiate it with a hold
of PF1. it will execute the MD3, then BW0040, but when it sees the
SWH45, it will start all over again, and will never end.

I am not certain how it could be working right now.

Here are the two ORIGINAL macros that now work once again:

CW MD3;BW0040;SWH45;MN255; /* PF1 hold */
FSK MD6;DT2;BW0050;SWH47;MN255; /* PF2 hold */

Seems something in the firmware got out of sorts by my screwing around

[Elecraft] OT; A question about a track for a utility pole.

2013-02-16 Thread Richard Fjeld
I'm posting this to the reflector for all to see who responded both on and off.

First of all, thanks. I am familiar with the Hazer which is for straight, not
reduction sized, towers. Usually, they are for the aluminum towers which were
never to be guyed. They are a good idea.

No, this was for wooden utility poles. Preferably, it would be rigged with the
hardware before the pole is set into the ground to avoid the need for working
in the air. I can build one, but I would like ideas ahead of time. Hardware
for an overhead trolley for hoists can possibly be used. (A winch near the
bottom is assumed.)

[Elecraft] MC-85 Kenwood Mic to K3

2013-02-16 Thread Brenton Meadows
HI, I have an Elecraft K3 with P3 etc and wanted to inquire if any one has
tried a kenwood MC85 desk microphone on the K3 with any success.
I seem to remember elecraft use kenwood wiring configuration so it should
be a plug in with no wiring alternation.
Any comments welcome

Re: [Elecraft] MC-85 Kenwood Mic to K3

2013-02-16 Thread Don Wilhelm

Brenton,

The Elecraft microphone pinout is *compatible* with Kenwood, but it is
not the same.
The difference is in the pin used to supply 8 volts over the microphone
cable. Elecraft uses pin 6 while Kenwood uses pin 5.

That means that the Kenwood dynamic microphones will typically work, but
any Kenwood microphone that wants the +8 volts from the transceiver will
not work.

I checked the G4WPW website
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/rg4wpw/date.html which contains a LOT of
microphone information and schematics, and discovered that the MC85 does
desire power from the transceiver, but there is provision for using
batteries - for those transceivers that are not able to provide power at
the mic jack, but with Elecraft transceivers, there is still a conflict
because the battery voltage can come back to the K3 to pin 5 and cause
"strange happenings" and even damage to the K3.

If you are capable of modifying the microphone plug - remove the wire
from pin 5 and connect it to pin 6, then that microphone will work on
the K3 (without internal batteries in the microphone.
If you choose to install the batteries instead of taking power from the
K3, you still must modify the plug wiring to remove the connection to pin 5.

Re: [Elecraft] PS3SVGA

2013-02-16 Thread Mike K2MK
Hi Charlie,

There are so many monitors and so many sizes out there it's really up to
you. How much desk space do you have? My only suggestions would be to check
the resolutions that are available out of the SVGA board. It would be wise
to get a monitor whose native resolution is also one of those available on
the SVGA output. Next, you might want to get a monitor that has at least two
inputs with a button on the front to toggle between inputs. This will enable
you to use it with your desktop PC as an expansion monitor when you are not
using it to display the ham bands.

[Elecraft] KPA500 Shines!

2013-02-16 Thread Roy Morris
After reading about the Tokyo Hi-Power HL-550FX review in the March, 2013
QST, I realize how much the KPA500 really shines. The review states the
550FX:

1) Needs 50 to 80 watts of drive power (depending on band).
2) Protection circuit will not reset for at least 5 minutes.
3) Two SO-239 sockets on back (transceiver and antenna).
4) Rotary band switch.
5) Analog panel meter.
6) High speed mechanical relays that can keep up with full break-in in CW
QSK up to at least 35WPM.

7) $3000.00 price tag.

This is a real bargain, ain't it!!!

Re: [Elecraft] Macros

2013-02-16 Thread Jim Leder (Hotmail)
I spent a few hours trying to understand what I am seeing, and it is a case
where the assigned macros are not being remembered to their assigned PF
keys. They work the first time, but after the second PF key gets depressed
(FSK) only the SECOND one is retained in BOTH PF1 and PF. The first macro is
not assigned to PF1 hold anymore, the SECOND macro is assigned to BOTH PF1
and PF2 hold. In this case, since I have FSK as second, it's the one that is
in play on BOTH PF keys. I reversed them and got CW to be dominant. The
macros work perfect from the utility program, just as I want them to.
I did do a read to the utility program, and the macros are in the EPROM as
they were written. Only thing left is the macro assign function is being
somehow corrupted/changed.

Recently I had my K3 back to Elecraft for an FPF board replacement. I sure
hope it's not that again. I sure hope you guys have an idea. I am out of
them.

BTW, without the MN255, the display stays in menu mode. MN255 brings is back
to a normal operating display.

Thanks ...

Good luck.

You will probably also find that the "up - down" buttons will not work as
expected when used on the K3. There is a menu option that will allow you to
disable input from those keys.

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement

2013-02-16 Thread kevinr

Good Evening,
Another good week of propagation. There was just a little more noise
though. Maybe it is the angle of the sun as our day length increases.
The weather was pleasant enough to walk outside without getting soaked.
The deer are moving back up here. I saw eight of them slowly browsing
their way across my property. There are a few paths which allow them to
get between water supplies. They like to bed near here and eat my rhodies.

Please join us tomorrow afternoon and evening.

[Elecraft] KPA500,KAT500 DOES NOT RESPOND TO K3

2013-02-16 Thread Kenneth Hale
Received my new KOA500 AND KAT500 but have not been able to get either one
to respond to the K3. The K3 was working great as a barefoot radio. Have
tried to connect the system in about 5 different configurations as shown in
the manuals that came with the amp and tuner. No response from the tuner or
amp. Could some menu setting in the K3 be stopping the use of the KPA 500
and KAT500? Very confused at this point.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500,KAT500 DOES NOT RESPOND TO K3

2013-02-16 Thread Phil Hystad
Are you trying to hook everything up at once for the first time?

If so, I would suggest first getting the KPA500 to work with the K3 without
using the KAT500 and once you have done that configure in the KAT500.

I followed the configuration descriptions in hooking up my K-line but I don't
remember having to change any configurations (menu stuff) to support the KPA500
or the KAT500. But then, maybe I have forgotten.

Jim,

You can imbed switch actions into macros, but not the same switch that
the macro is assigned to - that will result in a continuous loop.
