Re: [Elecraft] 472KHz transverter for KX3

2013-03-25 Thread Edward R Cole

Graham,

Congratulations. Looks like a nice design. Are you using a TUH-1
mixer? Looks like the one that is used in DEMI transverters. Also
does not look difficult to put on 10.472 MHz using an external 10-MHz
reference osc. This would be ideal running the K3 in TEST mode.

I don't see LP filters on the output. Might be good to have that so
the 2nd Harmonic does not cause BC RFI on 944-KHz.

If you are going into production, probably not much sense for me to
try, too. The market belongs to he who is first. I would add a 25w
PA for running 1w ERP (typically with short vertical antennas). I
get a calculated 4.15w ERP on my inverted-L by running 100w RF output.

At my station I could drive my 100w transmitter with the SGA5586
stage, or possibly directly with the mixer output. I currently run
on 495-510 KHz using the mw output of the K3 running in TEST.

Prices are yet to be confirmed,
the kits should be around AUS$80 and

fully built boards AUS$200
It may seem a little expensive but I hand built them, tune and test which
takes a few hours.

(a limited number of fully built ones are available already at this price)

[Elecraft] Has anyone used a "PC" microphone?

2013-03-25 Thread Mike Greenway
I know the thread was originally on the KX3 but wanted to send out info on a
mic that will attach to any headset and works great on my K3. I used for years
the Heil HC4 DXer Dream element for chasing DX and wanted something just as
good. I had been using a Bose QC15 noise cancelling headset and really enjoy
it but kept looking for a way to attach a mic. Look at this site
http://www.modmic.com/ It can be removed if needed and it has real punch once
the equalizer is set up. I really cuts through the pileups and got the cord
from my old desk mic off the table. I now keep the headset and mic plugged
into the rear all the time. I use an external speaker that has an off switch
that puts the speaker line to 4 ohms when in the off position. I selected in
the K3 menu for the speaker and headset to be enabled all the time so I only
have to turn the switch on the headset on to listen via the Bose on flip the
switch on the speaker to use it, so no more plugging and unplugging of
headsets along with all the cabling off the table for mics and headset. 73

[Elecraft] GPIO Band Info details

I'm looking at how to control band change external to the KX3 using
the ACC2 GPIO. I see reference to auxbus but no details. The

you use this to switch bands on 160m thru 6m for external
equipment? I looked thru the manual list on the Elecraft website and

[Elecraft] K3 - BAND1 output not changing

2013-03-25 Thread Dave Hawes
Debugging a problem on a friend's K3.

Using an external band decoder that has pull up resistors, the BAND1 line
output from the AUX connector is always high, and of course that is messing
up the decoding function on about half of the bands. The radio is working
normally otherwise.

Reviewing the schematics, it is seen that there is a series resistor in each of
the BANDx lines. If that resistor were to open up, the symptoms observed
would result. I am not close to the radio at the moment, but intend to check
this out.

In the meantime, has anyone seen this kind of failure, and if so, has the
series resistor been the culprit?

Thanks, and 73 - Dave N3RD

Re: [Elecraft] P3SVGA advice please

2013-03-25 Thread Dave Hachadorian

If you're going to spend $280 for an SVGA board, you might as
well go big on the monitor! I have two P3's driving two 23"
1080p LED monitors. The shack looks like the bridge of Starship
Enterprise with all those blue screens and strange images.

I found my 23" Dell units on Amazon (refurbs) for $85 each. I
don't see those particular ones there right now, but there are
other refurbs around $100.

The wider the monitor, the wider you can set the Span, and still
be able to maintain useful resolution of signals. Increased
vertical resolution helps to see a longer time history too.

Re: [Elecraft] [Elecraft_K3] A Different View--K3 Reduced-bandwidth RTTY Analysis

2013-03-25 Thread Brian Alsop

Monty,

Perhaps I didn't explain my thinking it too well.

Apparently the normal K3 FSK implementation has both frequency shift and
amplitude shifts. The time domain plots show an amplitude change from
mark to space. The frequency domain plots show the frequency shift
which is FSK keying. Both modulate the "carrier" and generate sidebands
which widen the signal.

The time domain pix show a power level change between mark and space.
In the case of the standard K3 those transitions are sharp. In the case
of the reduced bandwidth FSK, there transition is almost a straight
line. The slower transition has to generate lower level sidebands.

For an analogy:
Take the case of a pure CW wave, it is a very narrow bandwidth signal.
Key off and on at 40 wpm and the sidebands arise. Use Elecraft's raised
cosine to smooth the zero to full power transition and the bandwidth is
narrower and sidebands close by are much reduced.

Given the above, I stand by my conclusion that if the mark and space
powers are equalized, the sidebands close in could be reduced. How much
is the question. One qualification is not knowing what the improvement
provided is. (One could in theory imagine the a brick wall filter
around the primary signal. Then it wouldn't matter what caused the
sidebands. )

Interesting. At at least the transition between the mark and space
amplitudes are smoothed some. I wonder how many db in spectrum purity
that buys. If it buys something, imagine what no transition would buy.

Which brings up one of my crotchets.

One of the most useful and important station accessories is an
oscilloscope. Much more useful than one of those multi-hundred dollar
watt meters--who cares if it is 150 or 153 watts?

An oscilloscope centered before your eyes can instantly tell you a whole
bunch about your signal.

Is your keying too hard? Are you overmodulating? Are you
overcompressing? Are your RTTY mark and space different in amplitude? Is
your amplifier adjusted correctly? Do you have the right antenna for the
right band selected? Has something gone wrong with your antenna? Do you
have hum on your signal? Etcetera.

If more hams had a monitor scope, we wouldn't have so many rotten
signals on the air.

That is not fixed.

it is my understanding that with AFSK, at least, the cause is a bit of
ripple in the 2.7 kHz filter. I have 2.8 kHz filters in the TX position
of my K3s, and I see less of that than I did with 2.7 kHz filters. Wayne
can address how that might relate to his implementation of FSK.

There's no good reason for using FSK as opposed to AFSK with a K3 or KX3
-- several months ago, I did extensive testing with W6GJB of FSK and
AFSK (using MMTTY) and AFSK was significantly narrower than FSK. That
was with standard firmware, not the new Beta. The 2Tone author says his
AFSK is even cleaner. We haven't looked at that yet.

[Elecraft] K3 utility

2013-03-25 Thread Mike Reublin
I tried to load the new MCU beta, but the utility doesn't run. Error message is
"An exception of class NilObjectException was not handled. The application must
shut down".

Mac Version 1.12.9.22. It's never done that before. I downloaded another copy,
no joy. Re-booted, same error.

Re: [Elecraft] [Elecraft_K3] A Different View--K3 Reduced-bandwidthRTTY Analysis

2013-03-25 Thread Joe Subich, W4TV

What I see, on both K3's here, is a brief 7% power spike upward when
the FSK input is shorted, and a brief 7% power spike downward when
the FSK input is opened.

Expect to see more change on keying edges with shaped/filtered/band
limited FSK. Even shaped AFSK from 2Tone/cocoamodem/fldigi show
significant AM effects when switching from tone to tone. Running the
band limited AFSK through hard limiting (driving an amplifier into
compression) will widen the signal out (although not as much as driving
a mic preamp into clipping).

That is not fixed. I have two K3's, and have been running reduced
bandwidth firmware for a couple of months now. An LED wattmeter still
shows significant flickering as RTTY is being sent, and screen current
on a tetrode amp shows a lot of variation on its analog meter.

What I see, on both K3's here, is a brief 7% power spike upward when the
FSK input is shorted, and a brief 7% power spike downward when the FSK
input is opened. Steady-state mark and space rf amplitudes are equal.
The transients occur only at the transitions. This experiment was
repeated with DSP v 2.81 and is unchanged from earlier versions. I
guess, if the signal is clean, it's nothing to worry about, but it sure
looks weird to see all that flickering going on. I remember on my old
TS-850, I could check amplifier tuning while rtty was being sent, but
with the K3, I don't feel comfortable doing that.

The K3 and KX3 use an optimal, raised-cosine (sigmoidal or S-shaped)
keying envelope. As a result, both rigs have CW keying that's crisp
but occupies very little bandwidth. The consensus is that it's just

Gday all,
Ive designed and built a transverter board for the band, It is working very
well and is turning out to be popular.

The K3 is a superb radio for driving it and is what i'm using myself.

IF is typically 28Mhz but can easily be changed.

There has been some delays due to component sourcing and changes but it is
very close to being available.

Re: [Elecraft] A Different View--K3 Reduced-bandwidth RTTY Analysis

2013-03-25 Thread Ed Muns
As far as I know, this enhanced DSP filtering is only on the K3 FSK
transmitted signal. There is no impact on other modes, digital or
otherwise, only FSK-D.

applicable to other modes.

I would presume it is, but obviously not with the same type of cleanup
required with the RTTY artefacts.

Please expand the conversation to include CW and SSB.

Thank you in advance.

Andy, K0SM has a very nice look at the K3 reduced-bandwidth FSK keying.
(Now available to all as Beta DSP rev. 2.8.)

http://www.frontiernet.net/~aflowers/k3beta/

It is also interesting to look at before and after FSK signals in the time
domain.

https://picasaweb.google.com/StarrGarretson/2013_03_25_K3_FSK

K3 FSK has always had a small amplitude difference between mark and space.
The transition has always been abrupt, Photo 1. With the new beta software,
the transition is much more gentle, Photo 2. Bravo!

Christophe,

The voltage that you see in the display will always be lower than the

There is a reverse polarity protection diode in the K2 and there is a
slight voltage drop across the fuse.
That will make the voltage inside the K2 0.4 to 0.5 volts lower than the

[Elecraft] K3 Beta Firmware Release: Reduced FSK-D keying bandwidth, etc.

2013-03-25 Thread wayne burdick
K3 beta-test firmware revision 4.66 (with DSP rev. 2.81) is now
available. See release notes below.

Please send any questions to k3supp...@elecraft.com. For beta firmware
download instructions, see:

 http://www.elecraft.com/K3/k3_software.htm

73,
Wayne
N6KR

* * *

K3 MCU 4.66 / DSP 2.81, 3-22-2013

* FSK-D KEYING BANDWIDTH GREATLY REDUCED: This change reduces the
amplitude of the FSK-D keying sidebands by 25-30 dB at a 500-Hz
offset, giving the K3 one of the cleanest FSK signals available.

* K3/0 (REMOTE-RIG) IMPROVEMENTS: (1) Supply voltage can go down to
7.6 V; (2) VFO lock works correctly; (3) TX LED no longer gets out of
sync.

* IMPROVED HANDLING OF SERIAL I/O (RS232) ERROR CONDITIONS.

* SUPPORT ADDED FOR ALTERNATIVE LCD DRIVER IC. This has no effect on
radio operation.

* RIT AND XIT NO LONGER TURNED OFF UNINTENTIONALLY: In previous
releases, changing bands via direct frequency entry (FREQ ENT) or
remote-control band change commands (FA, FB, and BN) would turn off
RIT and XIT. This was true even if CONFIG:SPLT SV was set to YES.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Amp

2013-03-25 Thread Igor Sokolov
I do not have equipment to accurately measure IMD of my combo of KX3 and HLA
300 Plus. Having said that I drive HLA 300 with 5 w from KX3. It gives me
200 + watt on all the bands. Listening to the radiated signal using TS590
and different antenna reveals that the occupied bandwidth is within the same
boundaries which I have determined by transmitting 100 W from my K3.
Therefore I assumed that IMD of the above mentioned combo is no worth then
30db.

Hi All,

To echo Jim Brown's cautionary statement about IMD with the RM Italy HLA
series amps, there is some good info on Tom Rausch's (W8JI) website
concerning the HLA-150. That amp will run up to 150 watts or so, but
according to some testing that Rausch did, if you go much over 100 watts,
the IMD gets pretty marginal! Presumably the HLA-300 have some similar
optimal point below it's maximum capability. Apparently this is not at
all uncommon, particularly with 12 V. amps. Even the K3 loses some of
it's IMD quality if you go over 100 watts, which you can do somewhat.

HB9PJT and I made lots of tests with KX3 audio.

We tried a few headsets. The equalizer does not work as well as in K3 and
signals with mediocre microphones were only slightly improved. HB9PJT got
better results with Heil HC5.

It seems that both the equalizer and processor in KX3 are work in progress.
Wayne knows and Lyle will work on both when he has time.

Any word on a change to allow the TS-590 band information to be properly read by
the KPA when using memories? As previously reported, it works fine in VFO mode,
but does not when operating in memory mode.

Hi,
You may want to consider adding the "Delay" adjustment.
I use mine in CW depending on whether I operate QSK or not.
Of course it also is used to adjust VOX delay I believe.
Also the "Mon" (monitor) function might be of value.
Good Luck

Hi all,
The KE7X KX3 book is nearing completion. There are some white spaces that would
be nice to fill with some pictures on the KX3 in action. If you have any neat
photos you would like to contribute, please send them along (but please, no 8
Mbyte photos). I'd especially like to see some mountain-top operating photos.

Anybody submitting a photo that can be used will receive a copy of the book.

When is it going to be out? I'd like to have it done by Visalia but I'm running
out of time. :-(

I believe Dick did not state explicitly, the 2.7 kHz filter must be
enabled for transmit on DATA modes too. See the Filter Installation
section in Appendix A of the manual - especially the information below
the filter images on page 78.

Any filter can be enabled for receive, but some do not make much sense,
particularly for the 500 Hz filter.

Re: [Elecraft] K3-100

2013-03-25 Thread Dick Dievendorff
Brian:

Slot 1: 13 kHz, not 1300 kHz. You should enable this for receive for all
modes. This is your Tx FM filter.
Slot 2: 6 kHz, not 600 kHz. You should enable this for receive for all modes
except perhaps FM. This should be your Tx AM filter.
Slot 3. 2.7 kHz. I would enable this for receive for all modes including AM,
but not FM. This should be your Tx SSB and Tx CW filter.
Slot 5: 500 Hz: I would enable this for CW, USB, LSB, and Data, but not AM
or FM.

Hello, Brian.

Install the Elecraft K3 Utility, it's available at
http://www.elecraft.com/K3/k3_software.htm#k3util

Start the K3 Utility.

Navigate to the "Configuration" tab. Click "Configure Crystal Filters".
Click "Help" at the lower right corner. Follow the instructions in Help.

You might also want to review the section of the K3 Owner's Manual available
at http://www.elecraft.com/K2_Manual_Download_Page.htm#K3, see page 46.

You mean 13 KHz and 6 KHz, anyway, looks good. That's how mine are.

Re: [Elecraft] [KX3] Has anyone used a "PC" microphone?

2013-03-25 Thread Jim Sheldon
When I bought "Dragon, Naturally Speaking" I got a fairly decent stereo headset
with a flexible boom microphone on it for use with their program. I upgraded
the program and they sent me a second headset/mic combination. The same
headset/mic you can get from a number of places for use with a PC or laptop.
After I got my KX3, I decided to try it. Works very well and have had
spontaneous reports of "Excellent Audio" using the same setup used for the MH3
hand mic. I left the TX EQ at factory settings.
