[Elecraft] An Old Glitch Returns with KX3 firmware version 1.41

2013-04-02 Thread Don Butler
I want to report an old glitch that seems to have returned with KX3 FW ver
1.41:
After a band change, and after an ATU match cycle has been run while in one
of the SSB modes, my KX3 will not transmit when the MH3 is keyed. BUT,
after a simple toggle from USB/LSB to CW and then back to USB/LSB with the
mode button, the PTT button works fine and all is well again. I don't use
VOX so haven't checked it that way.

This glitch is repeatable with every band change to any band.. every single
time. It occurs in SSB only . I have had no problem with CW, and do not use
FM or digital modes so cannot comment on them.

This glitch was present when I first received KX3 S/N 125 with firmware
version 0.99 .. Somewhere along the way I reported the problem, but do not
recall exactly when I did so. I have upgraded firmware on a regular basis
and know that the glitch was corrected with a firmware upgrade several
months ago, but it does not seem to be specifically mentioned in the notes.
I do not recall the specific version in which it was fixed, but I think it
was possibly 1.22, and I am certain that the problem was not present with
versions 1.34 and 1.36. The old problem returned yesterday when I loaded
version 1.41.

The problem was here .. It went away after a firmware upgrade . and now
it's back with 1.41.

I just wanted to report it again so it can possibly be addressed.

I'm also very curious since I don't recall seeing any other mention of this
is anyone else seeing this? ... or am I dealing with a unique
scenario?

Don, N5LZ
KX3 S/N 125

So, when I connect the cable on ACC port the radio turn on. When I push
the power button the radio did not turn off. Only when I disconnect the Y
cable from ACC port.

The band change did not work well but sometimes changed the band.

So, I think that this VGA cable is not the correct one.

Since you are using VMware, you have to ensure that USB/Serial is supported
or enabled by the hypervisor. I know it is now available in Hyper-V, not
sure about VMware though.

Re: [Elecraft] Dunstar Question - ANSWERED - Thanks

2013-04-02 Thread Greg
I don't think the dune star uses bcd signals. It needs outputs from a
relay driver to select the appropriate filter. It can be set to either
sink or source.

K2, K3, or KX3? Which transceiver are you using.
If a K2, many USB to serial adapters do not like to run reliably at the
K2s 4800 baud. Try a real serial port or another adapter.

Re: [Elecraft] High Tech verses Classic

2013-04-02 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
Nice bit of nostalgia!

The only thing that didn't ring "true" but understandably changed for the
film was a lack of heterodynes on top of the signals on 20 meter 'phone.
Back in those days when A.M. was the "standard" and SSB was just getting a
toe-hold among Hams, the phone bands often sounded like a dozen different
audio oscillators were being broadcast all at once on top of the signals
when several A.M. stations moved in close to each other so their carriers
produced beat notes in the audio range. One could ignore the extra
efficiency of SSB, just getting rid of the carrier heterodynes was worth the
effort to make the change, Hi!

Brings back many memories. I was a communications sergeant in the 40th
Armored Division in the 1950's.

Re: [Elecraft] Dunstar Question - ANSWERED - Thanks

2013-04-02 Thread Joe Subich, W4TV

Dick,

The Y connector directly parallels the BCD lines of the KPA-500 and
whatever device is connected to the other leg of the Y. In some
cases, one device can load the lines such that the other device does
not decode reliably. Check your Dunestar (and any decoder used to
control the Dunestar - from memory the Dunestar 600 is "one line per
band" and not BCD) for proper operation when connected in parallel
with the KPA-500.

includes a Y connector that enables you to connect the KAT500/KPA500
as well
as another device (your existing band decoder) to the K3's back panel ACC
connector.

Be careful when selecting a Y connector; some sold for VGA monitors
may not
have all 15 pins connected as you would expect.

Re: [Elecraft] Dunstar Question - ANSWERED - Thanks

2013-04-02 Thread Dick, WN3R

Thanks, Dick.

Dummy me opened the tuner first and posted my question after reading its
manual. Had I opened the AMP box first, I would have had my answer as I
found the Y cable. Perhaps,

there should a mention of the Y cable in the Tuner manual as well.

Thanks again for your help. My plan is to remote the whole thing with
the K3/0 which is still in the box. I have some work to do on my old
Remote Rig boxes that are now connected to the IC-706.

Dave,

If you install a Lantronix serial to ethernet device with two ports
you can manage the amp and rotor without having to log in to the
remote computer. I got one from gridconnect.com and it works great.

[Elecraft] Remote operations

2013-04-02 Thread David Windisch
Hi, all concerned:
I'm in Jacksonville, FL, doing "private" remote ops using remoterig.com
boxes for the radio part (K3/0 controlling K3/100), and logging onto a
remote computer desktop (in the midwestern USA) to use Windows apps for
RS-232 control of an amplifier and rotator.

Things seem to be working fairly well during the short time the system has
been up.

I'd like to get a thread going with anyone using linux apps and boxes such
as the "raspberry pi" to do remote ops, to see what other ways of doing
things are out there.

Brgds,
Dave, N3HE

Full disclosure: I have a time-share at w2re.com, which works *truly fb* for
the times I want to get into a shouting contest from a location with
different propagation. We can talk about that as well.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 mic audio thru speaker

2013-04-02 Thread Don Wilhelm

Ian,

The mic audio in the speaker is definitely not normal. That says you
have something connected incorrectly.

First question is - did you remove the KSB2 board during the K60XV
installation? If so, check to be certain it is plugged in correctly.

Next, is the problem seen only on SSB transmit for 40 and 60 meters?
Check some other bands. If only 40 and 60 meter bands, check that the
K60XV board is plugged in correctly. It is not the easiest thing to get
those pins aligned right, you have to peer under the board to get both
the 3 pin header and the 8 pin header aligned at the same time.

If neither of the above are the problem, check your installation steps,
particularly the points where the coax on the bottom of the RF board end
points are placed. It sounds like you may have soldered the J13 end of
that coax to the wrong pin and that could feed a bit of transmit RF back
into the receiver. If your K2 SN is less than 3000, make certain the
trace cut is complete.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 FW Update

2013-04-02 Thread Joel Black

David,

I am going back trying to re-create the problem.

In Mountain Lion, trying to load v1.36/1.05, I am getting the same issue
- the KX3 Utility fails at the DSP load. My KX3 shows, "dsp LOAD" and
the KX3 Utility has failed. In case it is noteworthy, the RX meter is
full scale. I *did* reload the driver for the KXUSB. The latest version
on the FTDI website is 2.2.18. That is what was in my downloads folder
and I am assuming I was using that version before. For good measure, I
re-installed the FTDI driver.

In the Mac version of the KX3 Utility, I have 17 pages of error
messages/system stats. I don't know if you'd want to look at all 17
pages or not. I don't really know at what I'm looking. I did notice this:

Exception Type: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGBUS)
Exception Codes: KERN_PROTECTION_FAILURE at 0x000945fb

Using the KX3 Utility for Windows in VMware, I just got finished down
grading back to 1.36/1.05 and then upgrading to 1.41/1.13. I had no
issues this time. The only thing I did differently was re-load the same
FTDI drivers. Apparently, I was not holding my mouth right last night. ;)

Let me know if you would like to look at the Mac utility errors.

Thanks,
Joel - W4JBB

Wow... The audio change is great. As is the LED brightness. I have
not had a chance to play with the rest of it.

I will say that I thought I bricked my KX3 during the FW upload. As
usual, I could not get the Mac version to complete the update. The FW
would load, but the DSP would not. I tried just uploading the DSP and
the Mac version would not let me. Booted into VMware and tried there
with no success. Finally, booting into BootCamp got me going again.

I have *no* luck updated FW on the KX3 or the P3 with the Mac
utility. I just updated the K3 with the Mac utility with no issues.
I have no idea why the difference.
