The utility creates the "default" folder. If you want a different folder
than that, please create it and navigate to it and then copy firmware.

As I try to put all the new firmware files for the K3 on 6 PCs for an
expedition, the new K3 Utility (latest version now loaded on each PC) says
it copied the files from the ftp but there is no folder created by the
utility. I tried sending it to another folder and nothing happens but the
utility wants to talk to the K3. So I shut off the K3 and there is no
download and the utility once again tries to talk to the K3. So I close
the
COM port, then ask for the firmware files expecting that I can download
the
firmware but it looks at the ftp, does nothing, then again tries to talk
to

the K3.

I had a feeling the firmware was going to be an experience (first time
download for me)..and its not making any sense.

It's working. I don't know what changed. I completed installation of the

as I go from Fn1 to Fn4. I just didn't hear it before.

Tnx.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 - how loud when tuning?

2013-05-24 Thread Gary Gregory
Regardless of the 'rattle' of the kat500, once done on all bands needed,
the result is you only get a 'click' on band change and qsy if a new bin
memory is asserted.

Other than those instances the kat500 is quiet.

Not sure what all the fuss is about...it is what it is.:-)

Hi.

Well, my KX3 is now built (took a little under 3 hours) updated and
working very well indeed!

What a cracking little radio.

Only one wrinkle...

The kx3util program (Linux version) couldn't connect to Elecraft's
servers to find out if there was any later firmware available. (Error
120 I think it was, not 100% sure...)

I eventually hacked my way backwards from the link to the Beta test
code, to find the current production stuff. (Why no direct link to the
current code?) Downloaded the files into the 'util's firmware folder,
and was good to go.

Anyway, done and dusted.

One last thing. Who to contact to "register" the serial number so any
(hopefully nill) warranty issues can be catered for.

[Elecraft] KPA3 Fan Speed

Hi guys:

I am assembling a K3, and I am at the point where I am adding the KPA3
amplifier.

There is a step where you test the fans --- under CONFIG --- going from FN1

faster. Mine seem to maintain the same speed (seems fast, but they are
silent. I almost can't hear them) for all 4 positions. I cannot tell the
difference.

Anyone know what this is about?

[Elecraft] XMIT Cycling in K3

2013-05-24 Thread Jay
After loading the new released files today with the new utility (all went
fine) for the K3, when I now use N1MM and call CQ it keeps on cycling the CQ
(XMIT to RX and then again XMIT over and over)..just keeps on looping until
I hit escape in N1MM

This occurs in CW and RTTY modes

Never did this before

Re: [Elecraft] CW DAY

2013-05-24 Thread Fred Jensen
I'm getting multiple questions -- direct. Here is the info on CW when
my fone rings for everyone:

Android Samsung Galaxy S
all apps from Google Play

MorseRing: Sends name if # is in phone book, otherwise sends #.
Repeats for as many rings B4 voice mail that you have set.

SMS2CW: Short mode - sends "NEW SMS FROM" and tel # once.
Long mode - sends above + the entire message once.

MorseCodeKeyboard: Set it up as an alternate keyboard. It has two
fairly large buttons, two fingers over them, one is a dot, the other a
dash. Sends SMS texts. Fun at first, not so much as time goes on,
haven't used it in a long time.

MorseCodeReader: Obvious, mediocre performance at best.

Re: [Elecraft] Musings on a "K4"

2013-05-24 Thread drewko
In a K4 I would like to have a SDR radio that would be a lot more
"definable" by the end user. I still prefer a conventional
self-contained box-with-knobs for my ham rig (not a computer) but
would like to have a lot more facility for customizing its operation
and functions.

Many of the various feature requests and software enchancements that
have been requested for the K3 and will probably never be implemented
could possibly be programmed by the user himself if the rig had a
sophisticated macro language. Such a "kit" would be a lot of fun to
tinker with!

Not really interested in an SMD kit which to me would be little more
than an extended exercise in soldering, with bags full of microscopic
parts...

You can hear it, and it's louder than the KAT3 100W tuner in the K3, but
it's quieter than any other high-powered auto-tuner I've used.  I have 3
antennas, all multi-band [but not all the same bands].  I went through
all the segments on all bands, and tuned the appropriate antennas
[KAT500 "remembers" settings on a frequency/antenna basis].

For each band, one antenna is designated "preferred," and if another
will also work on that band, it is secondary.  Antennas that don't work
on a particular band are disabled in the tuner.  It's really slick and I
don't think I've run an auto-tune cycle in months.  Just QSY and hit the
key.  Where I have two antennas, I can switch instantly between them
just by tapping the ANT switch.

He was in DC, and I believe the telegraph line was at least partially
Federally funded and not directly connected to any railroad, however the

drawing of the reception of the message years ago.

When you think of it, I wonder if he even thought of the impact Morse code
would have on society back then.

If life were fair, he would have been thinking about the impact of the
Vail code. Sam's plan was to translate a message into a sequence of
numbers using a dictionary he worked to come up with, and then send the
numbers. The receive op used a "un-dictionary" to recreate the message.
Some historians suggest that in fact, he downplayed the
electromechanical part of the telegraph and saw his "dictionary" as the
true genius. Sam was a somewhat vain fellow and did not take kindly to
the advice of others.

Alfred Vail was probably the first to come up with the idea of a code of
marks on the tape to denote letters, and just use the code to spell out
words, and that idea finally prevailed over Sam's dictionary. Early ops
rather quickly discovered they could decode the message just by
listening to the click-clack of the receiving mechanism. For a period
of time, Sam pursued a cause that messages copied "by ear" were less
reliable than those read off of the tape. I think he even took someone
to court over it.

The ring tone on my smartyfone sends the name of the caller if in my
phone book, or the number if not, at 25 WPM. Interesting responses from
folks when standing in a line. :-)

Good luck to both of us! I spent several hours out in the car this morning trying
to track it down, but when I got home again, it was gone :-( I could have driven
right by the problem and never noticed it, if it was off at that particular time.
This is going to be a really tough one to locate!

By the way, I do have to say, my KX3 works great in the car and the NB is the best I
have ever experienced in the car! I kept turning off the car so I could listen for
noise without the engine running. The only noise source I found was at a medical
clinic four miles away in the right direction, and then the NB on the KX3 did nothing
to blank it. I thought maybe I had found the pesky source, but there certainly is
no conclusion at this stage. I will head out on the road again the next time it
acts up.

Subject: [Elecraft] 6m QRN on my K3

Recently, I have started having a really bad wide band noise problem in one
direction
on 6m. It comes and goes, but is on much of the time. In the past, the IF
noise
blanker in the K3 has worked well for me, but with this noise, even WID7
setting only
knocks it down from S7 to S6. Often the "NB" on the K3 blinks too...I am not
sure
what that means. The noise level becomes much less when I invoke the DSP NB,
but I
don't like to use that because I am often trying to work weak signal digital
modes,
and I can't have little bits and pieces of the spectrum pulled out.

Is there any way to install some custom NB algorithms into the K3, or does
anybody
else have any suggestions? I have put a sample of the noise on my website
here:

http://www.bigskyspaces.com/w7gj/W7GJnoise.wav

I hope to be able to track down the source with my KX3, but it is not always
running
continuously.

Re: [Elecraft] CW DAY

2013-05-24 Thread Lewis Phelps
"What hath God wrought?" is a verbatim quote from the King James translation of
the Bible (Numbers 23:23).

If you're into numerology the number 23 is supposed to be highly significant.
See the Wiki entry for "23 Enigma". In contemporary English the phrase would
be "What has God made?"

Samuel Morse sent that text as the first traffic on the Baltimore-Washington
telegraph line. The line was built for general communications purposes, not as
part of a railroad operation. However, the historic Morse transmission was sent
from the U.S. Capital in Washington DC to a Baltimore & Ohio Railroad facility
at Annapolis, MD. in 1844.

servers to find out if there was any later firmware available. (Error
120 I think it was, not 100% sure...)

I eventually hacked my way backwards from the link to the Beta test code,
to find the current production stuff. (Why no direct link to the current
code?) Downloaded the files into the 'util's firmware folder, and was
good to go.

Anyway, done and dusted.

One last thing. Who to contact to "register" the serial number so any
(hopefully nill) warranty issues can be catered for.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 - how loud when tuning?

2013-05-24 Thread W5RDW
Compared to the MFJ 998 I had sometime ago, the KAT500 sounds like a mouse
picking away at the sheet rock up in the ceiling! It is quite and once it
learns its environment, it makes one click and you are ready to go.

Re: [Elecraft] K4? No, I want a KX2!

2013-05-24 Thread Doug Person
I completely agree. I invested in a moderately priced soldering station
and a binocular magnifier. I already had a PanaVise to hold circuit
boards and I built a simple device to hold components in place. Done
right, however, a kit would include a solder mask and be the right size
to stuff into a typical toaster oven. Either way, (hot air gun or
toaster oven), a KX2 would be a joy to build. Surface mount is
challenging. But, it is also the future. Thru-hole is fast becoming
obsolete. It would seem appropriate for the company the leads the kit
industry, to take us to the next step: a true solder-it-yourself surface
mount kit.

As a toe-hold, I would enjoy seeing a KØ - a surface mount, single
band, cw rig with interchangeable band modules, digital display, decent
superhet receiver, 2-3 watts out, with a built-in, rechargeable and
possibly interchangeable li-po power source. Follow this with a KXØ that
provides a similar single-band approach and arcitecture. But, manages 10
watts out for SSB and includes RTTY, PSK and CW encoding/decoding
through a built-in USB interface (or, better yet - Bluetooth) . Another
approach would be to place control of the KXØ completely in a tablet or
laptop. Imagine using a 7" Android tablet connected to a small, light
box that has complete rig control and a spectrum display, putting out 10
watts on SSB or 5 watts on PSK or RTTY.

This approach, will without question, be done by somebody, someday. Its
just a question of when and who. Think of it as an "app for that" on
your tablet or smart phone for ham radio that connects to an external
device via Bluetooth. That would be truly future-thinking... Elecraft
really should be first with this concept. They reinvented kit-building
in 1999 with the K2. Who else could and should do this?

SMT is a breeze with a magnifying bench lamp, a decent soldering
station, tweezers and a reasonably steady hand. You have to learn a
couple of different and sometimes scary techniques. Melting all the
pins together into a long solder blob on an expensive SMT chip, then
wicking off the excess took some guts on the first AmQRP DDS-30 I did,
but I built three DDS-60s after that and every single one of them
worked first time I applied power. I was attracted to Elecraft to
build electronics, not to assemble hardware--I hate that part. hi.

It would be of course smaller, and should be waterproof. Now that

[Elecraft] 6m QRN on my K3

2013-05-24 Thread Lance Collister, W7GJ
Recently, I have started having a really bad wide band noise problem in one direction
on 6m. It comes and goes, but is on much of the time. In the past, the IF noise
blanker in the K3 has worked well for me, but with this noise, even WID7 setting only
knocks it down from S7 to S6. Often the "NB" on the K3 blinks too...I am not sure
what that means. The noise level becomes much less when I invoke the DSP NB, but I
don't like to use that because I am often trying to work weak signal digital modes,
and I can't have little bits and pieces of the spectrum pulled out.

Is there any way to install some custom NB algorithms into the K3, or does anybody
else have any suggestions? I have put a sample of the noise on my website here:

http://www.bigskyspaces.com/w7gj/W7GJnoise.wav

I hope to be able to track down the source with my KX3, but it is not always running
continuously.

I agree the SMT work is not an issue. I just finished a SoftRock Ensemble
Rx II -- the first SMT I tried was the microscopic 3V regulator -- trial by
fire! But the hot air and solder paste approach is the way to go. Here is
what I bought on Amazon for about $55:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009PPRJHS/ref=oh_details_o03_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Although now showing "unavailable" -- I am sure a similar item could be
found elsewhere. By the way, the hot air gun is also great for removing
components, as compared to using an iron... So please bring on the SMT
kits!
