Well I hope not guys. I bought a keyboard and connected it to the SVGA in the P3 so I could send some perfect code for a change. It felt like I was cheating, but it sure sounds nice. The elements of the characters are perfectly spaced, as are the characters. I can log while the memories play. I can switch to the keyer at will. [Elecraft] KX3 VFO B Alternate Display ?
On the KX3 VFO B Alternate Display you read Time, Power Supply Voltage, Battery Voltage, and so forth. So, my question is regarding the BT (Battery Voltage) display. I assume that this reads the same as the external power supply voltage level (PS) if there are NO batteries in the battery holder. I never paid too much attention to this before and I have had batteries installed almost from the time I put the KX3 together so I have not noticed this before. So, can someone confirm that if no batteries are used that BT shows the same reading as PS? I can understand how this might make some sense but I think I would prefer that BT show zero volts (or, N/A) or something if no batteries are installed. Re: [Elecraft] The KX3 as a shortwave broadcast receiver
great review! i read most every review and article you post. i ordered the kx3 mostly because of your review and partly because i'd been looking for a self-contained radio of adequate quality for several years. the price takes your breath (or at least my breath) away but i wanted to make sure i got all the accessories and options i'd need in case some went suddenly out of stock. i'm seriously disappointed that this isn't really what my definition of an 'sdr' radio consists of, i.e., one that uses only a single usb cable for programming, control, and power. i blew a couple hundred bucks trying to get an icom ic-r20 to accept its computer overlord and that was an exercise in frustration with cobbled together and custom made cables and interface boxes and it was just a nightmare. and even when i did get the radio connected, it was barely functional. it is far easier for me to look up a sw sked on my iphone and type the freq out on the keyboard than to get the sdr app to do it. anyway, even if i can't get the kx3 working the way 'real' sdr radios such as the bonito radiojet do, at least i can know that i can carry it away from my computer with a portable antenna and be fully functional with a receiver every bit as good. tks again for the review. keep up the good work. /guy (73 de kg5vt) -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/The-KX3-as-a-shortwave-broadcast-receiver-tp7576726p7576768.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

It was the end of an era. And as the last beeps faded away into the static they witnessed the end of the career to which they had devoted their lives. These men - and some women - had stood watch over the airwaves on shore and at sea. Theirs was mostly the business of maritime commerce. But when their ship was in peril they were called upon to send the most electrifying three letters in radio, S O S, knowing that all their fellow radio operators would press their earphones close to get every scrap of information and bring aid to their stricken ship. Once, our coasts were dotted with great Morse code radio stations, all communicating with ships at sea. They're all gone now... all except one, the one they called the Wireless Giant of the Pacific, located at Point Reyes. On that sad day in 1999 another event took place. The Maritime Radio Historical Society (MRHS) was formed. We made it our life's work to honor the men and women of wireless by restoring that wireless giant. One year and one minute later the giant's voice once again spanned the oceans as we picked up the thread and kept the faith with our colleagues of the air. Re: [Elecraft] O.T.: End of (another) era
I'll make a prediction: CW will largely be history for ham radio about 30-years after the date it ceased being a requirement to get a license. That is assuming the average age of hams was 45 when they were first licensed, they will be 75 in 30-years and quite a few no longer on ham radio for various reasons. Meteor scatter is no longer High Speed CW but entirely digital these days. 2 meter eme was totally CW in 1998 when I began to build my station. The digital mode JT44 arrived in 2003 and today CW on 2m-eme is in the same position as AM was in 1970 (maybe 5% still use CW). It is just technology moving along. (ditto for 6m-eme) I also predict a major move to satellite-based communications for emergency channels (such as Marine VHF-16). Most "comms" will have migrated to cellular or wi-fi forms by then or something we cannot even envision at this time. Maybe the "transporter" will be standard and airlines defunct. "Beam me up Scotty!" Yep, I might even live long enough to see A1 become extinct. In 2043 historians will be recording the last users of this archaic electronic language to preserve it (I will be 99). 73, Ed - KL7UW First licensed in Nov. 1958 as KN8MWA First station was on 40m with Ocean Hopper and DX35 (CW) -- From: "Fred Smith" To: "'Phil Kane'" , Subject: Re: [Elecraft] O.T.: End of (another) era Message-ID: <000201ce813a$3d9f7630$b8de6290$@com> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Yes it seems CW has became or becoming a thing of the past for Military or commercial use and only used some in this hobby. [Elecraft] VFO NR Modification results
I know I am way late on this. Finally got up the courage to take Exacto knife to the filter module on my KX3. The results were gratifying. Antenna off, I previously had VFO noise on 30 through 6 meters at an annoying level. I now have much reduced noise on 17 through 6. With antenna connected and my admittedly high noise level, I used to have annoying levels from 20 through 6. I now have no detectable VFO noise. If I ever find a truly quiet spot in the suburban RF racket, I will check further. For now, I am happy. Jim, KG0PP, wrote: > I have KX3 #249, with the original firmware UC 01.27. I upgraded to UC 1.50 yesterday. What new features should I be looking for? Hi Jim, That's a long list! For the benefit of you and others who may be running older KX3 firmware, I've listed all of the most important new features and bug fixes since rev 1.27 below. 73, Wayne N6KR * IMPROVED SSB TALK POWER (CMP): Our new speech compression algorithm provides a significant improvement in average talk power (or "punch"). ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURE: (1) Set CMP = 0.(2) Start with MIC gain = 0. While speaking close-mic'ed in your "on-air" voice, increase MIC gain until the ALC meter tickles the 5th bar. (3) While monitoring your voice with the KX3's voice MONintor, advance CMP to the desired level. The transmitted signal will still be clean even at the maximum compression setting. * ADJUSTABLE NOISE BLANKING (NB): The level of noise blanking can now be set using the knob above the NB switch (AF/RF-SQL). When NB is turned on, the present setting (1-15) will be displayed on VFO B for about 3 seconds. To select a new setting, rotate the knob before the display times out. The setting is stored per-band. Use the lowest effective NB setting. Higher settings may cause audible artifacts when strong signals are present. * NOISE REDUCTION (NR) MORE EASILY ADJUSTABLE: The overall level of noise reduction can now be set using the knob above the NR switch (AF/RF-SQL). When NR is turned on, the present setting will be displayed on VFO B for about 3 seconds. To select a new setting, rotate the knob before the display times out. The setting is independent for CW and voice modes. Note: The range of this parameter is 0-10 and corresponds to the "mix" or "M" parameter of the RX NR menu entry; see below. * AF GAIN SMOOTHER AT LOW END: The AF gain control now has finer granularity at the low end. To accommodate this , the gain range is now 0-60 (was 0-40). * INTERNAL SPEAKER BEHAVIOR IMPROVED: (1) Fixed bug that caused audio output mute/unmute cycling on strong signals. (2) Gain distribution changed to reduce speaker overdrive condition related to CODEC output. (3) Audio EQ optimized for speaker. * NEW LED BRT MENU ENTRY: Applies to the TX, delta F, OFS, and VFO B LEDS (not the LCD backlight). Allows brightness of these LEDs to be adjusted, but only in the case where the LCD backlight is off. During adjustment of LED brightness, the LCD backlight will automatically be turned off if it was on, then turned back on when the menu is exited. * NO SSB RX SIGNAL ATTENUATION WHEN BW < 2.4 KHz: Previously, adjusting the bandwidth below approx. 2.4 kHz might result in up to several dB of received signal loss. 2.4 kHz is the bandwidth at which the receiver switches from conventional SSB demodulation to "Weaver" method to take advantage of filter FL2 on the KXFL3 roofing filter module. * SSB PBT CONTROLS CAN BE SET FOR WIDTH/SHIFT: The default for passband tuning in sideband mode is LO/HI CUT (PBT functions I and II, respectively). If the PBT SSB menu entry is instead set to NOR, then SSB mode uses the same PBT functions as CW and DATA modes (WIDTH and SHIFT). If you alternate frequently between LO/HI CUT and NOR (width/shift) for SSB modes, you might want to assign the PBT SSB menu entry to a programmable function switch (PF1 or PF2). The parameter will then alternate between the two settings each time you hold the PFx switch. * AFSK-A SIDEBAND SELECTION NOW CORRECT: AFSK-A "normal" is LSB, reverse is USB. * DVR (DIGITAL VOICE RECORDER) ADDED: There are two transmit messages of up to 15 seconds each. (A future firmware release will provide an option for 1, 2, 3, or 4 messages of 30, 15, 10, and 7.5 seconds each, respectively.) Setup: Make sure you're in a voice mode, and that the voice MONitor level is not zero. To record, hold REC, then tap #1 or #2. "ERASING" will appear for 4 seconds, followed by "TAP XMT". Tap XMIT, then start speaking. To end recording, tap XMIT again. To play, tap MSG followed by #1 or #2. To auto-repeat (e.g., a repeating CQ message), *hold* rather than tap the #1 or #2 switch. Use MENU:MSG RPT to set the repeat interval. * IMPROVED SSB TRANSMIT CARRIER REJECTION. * RIT AND XIT NO LONGER TURNED OFF UNINTENTIONALLY: In previous releases, changing bands via direct frequency entry (FREQ ENT) or remote-control band change commands (FA, FB, and BN) would turn off RIT and XIT. * TRANSVERTER FREQUENCY ENTRY FIXED: The previous release did not handle direct frequency entry to transverter bands correctly (e.g., 144 MHz came out as 180 MHz). Re: [Elecraft] USB to RS232 cable or adapter
The below is a post I made to the N1MM Logger group and may be of some interest here. For more detail information, copy the wa8lmf URL in the K3CT post, into your browser. I recently purchased 'my last PC' and it's running on Windows 8 64-bit op system. This new PC, while it has a ton of bells and whistles, it, of course, has no serial or parallel ports. Based on John's post referencing the article by WA8LMF, I went to the Gearmo web page and purchased two of their USA-FTDI2X USB 2.0 to RS-232 converters. Even though I did not ask for it, I received my order the day after ordering it! After removing the eight Com ports automatically loaded on this PC, I configured the two converters for Com 1 through 4 and set up N1MM to operate with my K3. These converters, USB input and two RS-232 DB9 outputs, work excellent with my N1MM setup, both CW and RTTY operation is the same as with my prior PC with internal serial ports. In addition, these converters also work well with my K3 when I am QSO'ing using my old YPlog (QRQ) logging program. I would recommend these converters to anyone upgrading their PC that has no serial ports. 73, Tom - W4BQF * -Original Message- From: n1mmlog...@yahoogroups.com [mailto:n1mmlog...@yahoogroups.com] On Behalf Of John Bednar Sent: Thursday, May 23, 2013 6:28 AM To: n1mmlog...@yahoogroups.com Subject: [N1MM] Another USB to serial article Here is a link to a USB to Serial article that I received this week. Re: [Elecraft] [KX3] What features are new?
Jim, KG0PP, wrote: > I have KX3 #249, with the original firmware UC 01.27. I upgraded to UC 1.50 > yesterday. What new features should I be looking for? Hi Jim, That's a long list! For the benefit of you and others who may be running older KX3 firmware, I've listed all of the most important new features and bug fixes since rev 1.27 below. 73, Wayne N6KR * IMPROVED SSB TALK POWER (CMP): Our new speech compression algorithm provides a significant improvement in average talk power (or “punch”). ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURE: (1) Set CMP = 0.(2) Start with MIC gain = 0. While speaking close-mic’ed in your “on-air” voice, increase MIC gain until the ALC meter tickles the 5th bar. (3) While monitoring your voice with the KX3’s voice MONintor, advance CMP to the desired level. Note: The range of this parameter is 0-10 and corresponds to the “mix” or “M” parameter of the RX NR menu entry; see below. 2.4 kHz is the bandwidth at which the receiver switches from conventional SSB demodulation to “Weaver” method to take advantage of filter FL2 on the KXFL3 roofing filter module. * AFSK-A SIDEBAND SELECTION NOW CORRECT: AFSK-A “normal” is LSB, reverse is USB. * DVR (DIGITAL VOICE RECORDER) ADDED: There are two transmit messages of up to 15 seconds each. (A future firmware release will provide an option for 1, 2, 3, or 4 messages of 30, 15, 10, and 7.5 seconds each, respectively.) Setup: Make sure you’re in a voice mode, and that the voice MONitor level is not zero. To record, hold REC, then tap #1 or #2. “ERASING” will appear for 4 seconds, followed by “TAP XMT”. This also affected memory recall of transverter bands. * NEW FEATURE--SWITCH MACROS: You can now program the PF1 and PF2 switches to execute sequences of KX3 remote control , or “macros.” These are created, tested, and sent to the KX3 using KX3 Utility. The K3/KX3 Programmer’s Reference has a number of sample macros and further detail
Re: [Elecraft] O.T.: End of (another) era
I guarded 500Kc and 2182 back in the Mid 60s. Sometime about 1966 we did some VHF road testing. Brand new and we thought it would be in use much quicker than it was. I really do not know why people are talking about the demise of CW in ham radio. If your listening to the bands listen to 20 SSB and tell me the amount of traffic is not down. All you need to do for either CW or SSB is put a rare DX entity on the air or a contest then try to squeeze in edgewise. I know younger hams who are working on learning the code and other young hams who are working on getting their speed up. CW is not dead yet. Neither is ham radio. Just like 500 and 2182 things change and will change. Use what you have and enjoy it while you can. Re: [Elecraft] K2 - KAT2 receive 4.7v voltage out on U4 pin 1 and 7
Chris, If I understand you correctly, you have a very low voltage on U4 pin 3 during receive, and the 4.6 volts on pin 1 did not decrease after you transmitted. (pin 1 and pin 2 should be at the same voltage). I believe what is happening is that the charge on U4 pin 1 had no where to bleed off, so it stayed at greater than 4 volts. If that is the case, I do not think there is any problem - that behavior will cease when you install R6.. U4 is wired as an op amp buffer. Normally the voltage on pins 1 and 2 will be the same as the voltage on pin 3. 73, Don W3FPR On 7/14/2013 11:05 PM, ChrisM wrote: I have finished building the KAT2 got the null to 001 and then checked the voltage at pin 1 at U4 which read at 0 on receive then went into tune at 5W and P1, U4 read about 4.6v. P5 of U1 and R1 center also read between .01 and .02v. Assuming U4 was bad I replaced U4 with another LM358 (not 100% sure if good, never used before.) and now have 4.8v on 1 and 7 with all other voltages the same as before.
