[Elecraft] K2/100 Keying a Drake L-4B

2013-08-04 Thread Ariel Jacala
Hi Elecrafters,
I am ready to key my Drake L-4B using my K2/100 but I read from a previous post:
If you already have the KPA100, look on the rear panel and you will see an RCA
jack marked PA KEY OUT between the ground connection and the power connector
- this will allow you to key your external amplifier directly - but only if
your amplifier has a positive voltage for its keying line. If your amplifier
uses a negative voltage keying circuit (like the Collins 30L-1 and some others)
you will need to construct an external circuit to key the amp. 73 --don n4hh
K2/100 #2028
Does the Drake use a negative voltage for the keying (line)?
If it does what modification do I need. I installed the Soft-key mod made by
Harbach. I am not sure whether that converts the Drake to positive voltage
keying.
Any help is appreciated.

Re: [Elecraft] K2/100 Keying a Drake L-4B

2013-08-04 Thread Mike WA8BXN
A simple way to find out is turn the amplifier on and measure the voltage on
the keying input on the amplifier, noting the voltage and its polarity. Next
switch your multimeter to measure current and connect it to the same place
on the amplifier. The amplifier should key and you will see how much current
needs to be switched by the radio. This procedure should work with any
amplifier.

Re: [Elecraft] K2/100 Keying a Drake L-4B

2013-08-04 Thread Don Wilhelm

Ariel (and all),

I don't know the specifics of that amplifier, but one can make a quick
measurement to find the answer for yourself.
Turn on the amplifier and measure the voltage at the amp's Keying input
with your DMM. Is it positive or negative? How large is the voltage?

If you are concerned about the keying current, set the DMM to measure
current. The amplifier will key, and the meter will indicate the
current that is developed.

[Elecraft] KAT500 vs K3 ATU

2013-08-04 Thread Gary Ferdinand
I am considering getting a KAT500 to provide me with higher power auto-tuning.
Currently, the KAT3 is capable of achieving a match on all bands using my
open-wire fed 160-meter dipole, with some help from a 4:1 balun. I believe
both tuners are T-matches, but I don't have enough information to judge whether
the KAT500 will achieve the same matches that the KAT3 will.

Can anyone give me the L and C values for each tuner?

Thanks,

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 vs K3 ATU

2013-08-04 Thread Cady, Fred
Gary,
Both tuners are L-C or C-L with the cap being able to be on the transmit side
or the antenna side. The L and C values can be found in the K3 schematic
package available on the Elecraft website but, so far as I know, the KAT500
schematics haven't been published yet.
I would expect, that if you K3 can tune the antenna, certainly the KAT500 can
too.
Cheers and 73,
Fred KE7X

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 vs K3 ATU

2013-08-04 Thread Dick Dievendorff
Essentially the same lumped values of L and C and hence the same tuning
range. The distributed reactances inside the larger tuner are somewhat
different because of component size changes, so there are some minor
differences that show up on 6 meters mostly.

If you install the KAT500 Utility (available free on our web site), the
individual KAT500 L and C values are shown on the Operate Page. You don't
need the ATU to do this.

Both tuners are switched L matches, with a series inductor and the ability
to switch the selected capacitors to either end of the inductor.

My K3's internal ATU will match 40m to 6m fine using a 66 foot doublet
but my KAT500 struggles a bit on two bands using the same antenna
configuration (with fine tuning), it tunes the remaining bands fine.

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement

2013-08-04 Thread kevinr

Good Morning,
After a chilly week the temperatures are climbing back into the
upper 60s again. It feels good not having to heat the house. Summer
should be a time where I can work on my garden rather than carry wood.
It was nice to receive some precipitation though since fire danger was
rising. Hopefully we will get more rain between now and October.

Propagation was great yesterday on 20 meters. Even with the sun as
calm as it is now there are still ions flitting about. I scanned 15 and
18 meters yesterday and found they were both open. I was hearing well
across the ocean into Asia. Lots of JAs and some Russian stations.
Other, weaker stations, popped up now and then too. I keep trying 10
meters but have yet to hear anyone up there. I am not sure at which
time of day this band opens. My listening efforts have all been during
mid-day from 11 AM to around 2 PM.

[Elecraft] K2 alignment and test part 2

2013-08-04 Thread Mike Weir
In my K2 build I am approaching the alignment and test part 2 stage. I
have the Rigol DS1052E scope (software upgraded to 100mhz) I would like
to use the scope on my K2 build. I do know there is spectrogram, and
features on the K2 that I can use BUT I would like to use the scope as
well.
I was wondering the following?
1. Can I use the scope when asked to use a frequency counter?
2. Can I use the scope to measure the voltages that are asked to be measured in
the alignment checkouts?
So
for 4 mhz oscillator calibration, PLL Reff oscillator range test, VCO
test, VCO alignment and so on can the Rigol scope be used in these and
other procedures?

I was also wondering I have the XG3 as well and
could I use that in 40m band pass filter alignment and what else could
the XG3 be used for in the K2 build?

Thanks very much for time.
Mike

[Elecraft] Channel Master Rotator Help

2013-08-04 Thread Ernie Kluft

Bought a Pixel Magnetic Loop and Channel Master antenna rotator to
feed my K3 Well, put it all together, installed it, and NUTS,
the antenna won't rotate... The antenna is now pointing N-S, and I'd
love to see how directional it really is. I'm pretty sure it's all
wired OK, and the cable should be fine... I've scanned the net for a
schematic of the controller, and only found what looks like a similar
Radio Shack controller... It gives the voltages from terminals 1,2
and 3 of the controller Mine partly matches... Any one have a
Channel Master 9537 controller, please contact me off list... Thanks, Ernie

Re: [Elecraft] K2 alignment and test part 2

2013-08-04 Thread Don Wilhelm

Mike,

The best use of the 'scope is during the transmit bandpass filter
alignment - just connect the 'scope (with a 10X probe) across your dummy
load, and use it to indicate the RF amplitude - that is faster then
looking at the slower to change display on the K2.
If you have the KAT2 option (or the KPA100), you can use the 'scope
amplitude reading to calibrate the wattmeter for forward power. Use the
peak to peak voltage and square it, then divide by 400 to give you the
power (assuming your dummy load is a good one at 50 ohms pure resistive).

Other than that, you will not have to use the 'scope much at all -- of
course if you need to do some signal tracing, it is the best tool to
use. Hint for that, multiply the 'Expected' RF voltages in the manual
by 2.8 to give the expected peak to peak voltage.

As far as frequency calibration, I would not believe the frequency
counter in a 'scope would be sufficiently accurate for doing the dial
calibration. You may want to defer the dial calibration until the last
step after you have Part III done and then look at the K2 Dial
Calibration article on my website www.w3fpr.com to set the 4 MHz
reference accurately and achieve good dial calibration.

For the filter alignment, use the information in part 3 of the dial
calibration article for use of Spectrogram to get the best results.
If you do not have a good copy of Spectrogram, look for the download
links on my home page - near the bottom.

The XG3 is excellent for setting the S-meter HI reading (CAL S HI)
Yes, you can use it when doing the receive bandpass filter alignment.

The K2 is designed to use minimal external equipment for the alignment
and calibration. Most of the essential tools are built into the K2, and
they work very well.

I was advised of a correction to the information below. Dave,KJ6CBS,
checked in on K3 #4052, not 4652. Unfortunately, I sometimes have issues
reading my own handwriting. My apologies for the mix-up.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 alignment and test part 2

2013-08-04 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
IF your scope is well calibrated you can use it for many d-c measurements as
well.

Whenever I'm adjusting a level for a peak or minimum reading, audio or dc, I
prefer my scope instead of a DMM because the scope is instantaneous and
provides an analogue (moving trace) instead of a digital readout, even
though my DMM provides a bar indication below the numbers to emulate
something approaching an analog display.

Of course, the scope is ideal for such adjustments at RF as well as Don
mentioned.

Indeed, my scope gets used to provide me an analogue display for setting a
signal level as much as any other use. If I could only have one piece of
test equipment to troubleshoot something, it would be my 'scope.

(Don't forget to convert the RMS values given for a-c measurements to
peak-to-peak as Don mentioned.)

One bane of digital displays is that they often provide a false sense of
accuracy and lead the unwary into thinking their digital exactness is
important or even desirable. It's almost never important to whether a
voltage is 4.12V or a bit over 4 volts.

I will confess to being one of the early adopters of digital watches decades
ago, but I soon replaced it with a round faced pulsar. I had no interest in
learning that it was 9:56 a.m. when all I wanted to know was that it was
almost 10.

[Elecraft] KX3 Roofing filter questions

2013-08-04 Thread Michael Aiello
Hi,
After installing the roofing filters in my KX3 (which was a while ago), it
seemed to me that the received audio was down somewhat from the levels I
recall from before the filters were installed.
At the suggestion of another KX3 owner, I tried the following experiment: I
hooked up my XG1 signal generator directly to the KX3. With the AGC turned
off, in CW mode and the narrowest bandwith so that filter 3 was selected,
and the XG1 at 50uv, I let the AFV indication stabilize, then noted the AF
db was at 0.0db, Opening the PBT control until filter 2 clicked in, and the
dbv jumped to +1.1db. I kept going until filter 1 clicked in, and the dbv
jumped to +1.4db.
I tried this sequence in both directions, both at 50uv and 1uv, and that
ratio of 1.4 - 1.1 - 0.0 was repeatable at both signal levels.
Is this normal for using the roofing filters?
Thanks

Re: [Elecraft] posting of kx3 shacks and antennas.

2013-08-04 Thread k3ndm
I use one of the following antennas:

1. A home brew Carolina Windom for 40 up 35-40 feet.
2. An interlaced 40/20 meter delta loop, apex up, base ~6 feet over ground, and
fed at a corner
3. An 18' vertical with 2 9' radials fed at the vertical base which is ~15'
feet above ground.

My shack is too messy to be photographed at this time.

My Field Day operation is entirely different. I participate with a team of
others who also own KX3s, except one. our antennas consist of beams and 1/2
rhombics. The towers are AB-577 portables. These are not for the average home
shack.
