Thanks all for the help with finding Spectrogram, I downloaded it FB from K9YC's website. You're right Steve, any other audio spectrum analyzer software would probably work and I could easily do it now that I've run Spectrogram using N0SS's tutorial. Re: [Elecraft] Spectrogram download site and Virus issues
A few days ago I stopped using both the Microsoft products on several machines here after Microsoft unexpectedly "baselined" both Defender and Essentials and gave several interviews disclosing they did not match the performance of packages by other vendors. You might want to take a look at what the Microsoft spokesman said. It was certainly a shock to me, and I received an even greater shock when I looked at recent test results. Even the free AVG and Avast products ran rings around Essentials and Defender. I am going to paste in a link, but if it does not work you can search on "Microsoft Admits That Security Essentials Is Just a Basic Anti-Virus Product" which brings up the Softpedia report on the Microsoft statement. [Elecraft] KPA500 affecting 160-meter reception
I’m having an issue with the KPA500 amp and my 160-meter Inverted L antenna; I wonder if anyone on the list has ever experienced something like this or has a suggestion where to look for the problem? My setup is a K3 transceiver, the KPA500 amp and a Ten-Tec 238C antenna tuner, connected to a collection of antennas, switched either in the tuner or using a couple of external coax switches (the tuner only has four outputs). One of the outputs is routed to the 160-meter Inverted L. The KPA500 is seeing about a 1.2:1 SWR to the Inverted L through the tuner. It loads well and shows no problems transmitting, either low power when disabled, or high power when the amp is enabled. The problem is, when I push the button to OPER on the amp, the received signal on 160 drops about 20dB (as evidenced by the signal level display on the P3). There’s no change in the loading, and the amp still puts out full power with no problem, but understandably this makes it much more difficult to hear the station I’m trying to work. All the other antenna selections and bands, using my quad or the G5RV work just fine and I don’t see anything like this happening. I’ve checked grounds throughout, including the connection to the radial system on the Inverted L and haven’t found anything visibly abnormal. I’ve also connected the Inverted L feedline directly to the KPA500, taking the tuner and the coax switches out of the circuit. In this configuration, the amp sees about a 1.7:1 SWR to the feedline. There is no change, I still get a huge drop in received signal strength when I switch in the KPA500. I would appreciate any ideas you may have about where I may have a problem. Re: [Elecraft] KPA500/Kat500 Cables - PL-259 Question
I also use coax seal on my PL-259 connectors outdoors, and it is good stuff. Like Ron says, the connectors remain looking just like new when the coax seal is removed. However, wrap the connector with electrical tape before putting on the coax seal. If you fail to heed that advice, you will be 'picking at' the remnants of the coax seal that adhere to every part of the connector - it sticks tight. 73, Don W3FPR On 11/8/2013 6:54 PM, Ron D'Eau Claire wrote: And, while I agree that the more expensive Type N connectors provide superior strength and weather resistance outdoors, I don't bother with them. Re: [Elecraft] KPA500/Kat500 Cables - PL-259 Question
I have some PL-259's by Amphenol with what appears to be phenolic insulation. But then, I've been buying and using them for over half a century, commercially and as a Ham. Some of my Amphenol connectors probably go back to the days when they were 10 cents each, brand new, in a barrel at the surplus store (cue Archie and Edith singing "Those were the days" :-) Where I see the most unidentified PL-259 connectors is in commercial installations by companies that buy on price, not brand. As long as long as they take solder well, I have never found any difference in performance, at least below 200 MHz. That said, I tend to buy Amphenol simply so I don't get a surprise, especially when buying on-line where I can't inspect the parts first and returning is a hassle. SO-259's (the female connector) can be a little more problematic. Some cheap ones do not have good multi-section spring contacts to engage the pin on the male. Still, most off-brands that I've seen are fine. Where I cringe around connectors is finding ones improperly mounted on the coax, with much of the shield broken loose or globs of solder on the center pin (that mashes and deforms the female socket when the ham-handed - excuse the expression - installer grabbed his pliers to tighten the sleeve, forcing the pin into the socket). Where I've come closest to wishing violence on another tech is at the top of a mast at night in driving rain (shipboard electronics always fail in storms) trying to separate one of those smashed connectors. And, while I agree that the more expensive Type N connectors provide superior strength and weather resistance outdoors, I don't bother with them. Even on ships, the lowly no-name brand PL-259 offers superb performance when encased in inexpensive "coax-seal" - a putty like material that one simply molds around the connector and coax. In the mean time, I've been getting "stuff" ready for the blessed event. Some of that stuff means preparing coax jumpers to run from the K3 to the KPA500 and from the KPA500 to the KAT500. From the KAT500 I may go to my 4:1 balun directly to my doublet or through a 4-position coax switch - undecided there. Anyway, many knowledgeable folks have stated, either on this reflector or on their own web sites, that it's a good idea to stick with known manufacturers of coax and connectors, such as Belden, Amphenol, The Wireman, DXE, etc. Well, I just got a bunch of PL-259 connectors from that last-mentioned vendor and noticed that they had no brand name on them. Plus, the vendor's web site doesn't say that they are "Amphenol" brand, but that they ARE silver plated and teflon insulated. Comparing these connectors with some other silver / teflon connectors in my parts drawer, I notice a difference in the center conductor. On the DXE PL-259's, the center pin is 100% surrounded with what apparently is the white teflon insulation. On the ones in my bin, there is a small silver-looking "ring" around that center pin, approximately 1 mm wide, and then teflon as the remainder of the insulation. The only other difference between these two types of connectors is that the DXE-supplied PL-259's have a much more coarse "finger grip" area than my other ones. So, the question is - with neither of them having any brand name on them, should one feel comfortable using either of them? How can you tell if a PL-259 is "crap", other than a lack of teflon insulation and silver plating? Re: [Elecraft] KPA500/Kat500 Cables - PL-259 Question
I have heard from reliable sources that DXE had some problems with their PL-259 crimping process over the past 6 months or so. They have taken steps to correct it, but if you have purchased pre-assembled cables from them, be aware that they may be a problem. The symptoms are that the receive signal goes down in strength after a few minutes. A transmit will "fix it", but after a few minutes, RX signal strength drops again. If you have similar behavior, check the DXE assembled cables for good low resistance to the shield at both ends. 73, Don W3FPR On 11/8/2013 6:23 PM, Fred Smith wrote: The DXE PL-259's are indeed good connectors I use it with their 400MAX coax and have ran up to 3kw into a dummy load using them no problems. [Elecraft] K3 - removable face plate
Attended the ARRL Midwest Division Convention in Lebanon, MO today and talked with Eric WA6HHQ and saw the new "K3/0 mini" as it has been designated. had a brief chance to play with it as it was hooked up, via internet, to the home office California. No difference between it and the K3/0 available now except it is only about an 1.5 inches deep. Very very cool. Eric said to keep an eye on the "Reflector" for an announcement on when orders will start being taken. Possibly very, very soon. Re: [Elecraft] KPA500/Kat500 Cables - PL-259 Question
Jim, In my experience, there are quite acceptable unbranded connectors out there. The problem is, you don't know what you are getting, as you do when you buy Amphenols. But I would expect that DXE checks out what they buy and they are probably OK. Problems with junk PL-259's are insulation that melts when you solder the connector, threads that don't fit other connectors, center pins that loosen up, plating that doesn't take solder (this is really nice when it happens in the field or on a roof or tower) -- all things that you will notice when you install them. Sockets are another story because you can't tell about the durability of the contact material at installation time! Re: [Elecraft] Small external monitor for P3?
Tim, I have a space problem similar to yours. I found some used 15" (diagonal measurement) computer monitors that are only 11", or a bit less, high, if you remove their stand. I figure that my eyes are still young enough, so that size screen is large enough, if its directly in front of me and above the K3/P3SVGA. Some 15" monitors have larger enclosure borders than others, that make them higher. I've "collected" several of this size for $5 to $15 from swap meets, computer store sales and Salvation Army stores, or similar outlets. You need to go to Norton's site and pull a program that removes it (at least it says it does) from all of the registry entries and cleans things up. I still have it on one of my computers, because it is needed for some other things. But, I've gone with AVG on everything else. MFJ also has the 4245 45A switching supply, and the DX Engineering catalog says, "No RF hash? These power supplies are clean!" Are they really clean? I don't want ANY hash spoiling my quiet location, and will avoid any switching supply that creates receive noise. Does anyone have experience with this line of MFJ switching supplies? What about the Astron ASR-SS-30M 30A switching supply. Quiet or noisy? Should I even consider a switching supply, or stick with a linear model? Has anyone used a 3D spectrogram program other than Ozone's? I am digging for another but have been unable to locate a spectrogram program which utilizes a 3D display. Ozone, with the 3D spectrogram, costs $999; a bit steep for an app I just want to test. Their price seems quite fair considering the amount of programming effort they have put in to use both the CPU and the GPUs in a client's machine. I would like to see the code but they are not in the open souce business. They do offer a ten day fully functioning free trial, maybe that will have to suffice. Kevin. I'm running 2x SS-30M and no noticeable noise on 6m EME. They are about 10 years old, not sure if current production is any different. Very happy with my Powerwerx SPS-30DM. Small, quiet fan when it comes on, RF-clean. I power a K2/100 and K2/10, plus a few station accessories. Re: [Elecraft] 25A power supply question
Mike, I've had the MFJ-4245MV supply for several years and think it is an OK PS. I detect no crud on any of the bands when powering my K3 with it. However, I normally use a solar / battery system and the '4245 doesn't get a lot of use any more. One thing that is annoying about it is that the fan runs at high speed all the time, right from power-on to drawing full current for several minutes. That's my only complaint about it. There was an article somewhere on the 'net about a mod to one of the other MFJ supplies to make the fan operate like the K3, based on heat. But, I'm pretty sure it was NOT for this '4245 model. Re: [Elecraft] K3 - removable faceplate (Bill W2BLC)
Bill and others interested I, too, saw the K3/0 Mini at Dayton and have been tracking it. At Dayton they said fall 2013 availability. I called Elecraft the other day and spoke with Brandon who is the system engineer/developer. He said they might ship a few before Christmas, but real availability will be after the New Year. The unit still requires the external RemoteRig box, but there will be a simplification of the cable interface compared to the current K3/0 and the key will plug directly into the K3/0 rather than the RemoteRig box. There is a waiting list for purchase and you can get on it by calling the company. Can't wait to operate remote from my NYC apartment to my shack 100 miles upstate. Re: [Elecraft] Icom 7100 and KAT500/KPA500 PTT issues
I got a chuckle out of this. After trying to figure out how to hook up the AMP to the 7100 I must have been having a senior moment. I built the interface described in the Icom manual and thought I can't believe I never had to do this before as I owned several Icom HF transceivers over the years. After getting it up and running I later visited my other home where I have all my radio spare parts, junk, etc, I went through the interface cable junk box and found *TWO* complete working 13 pin to ALC, and PTT cables. What is scary is I don't remember building them or ever using them. I'm turning 65 in a few days, please this is not going to get worse :-) 73 Jeff kb2m -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of k...@comcast.net Sent: Wednesday, November 6, 2013 1:49 PM To: Walt W0CP Cc: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Icom 7100 and KAT500/KPA500 PTT issues The 4-wire AH4 connection doesn't PTT key the amp. It has 12v, ground, Start, which is a signal from the Icom to the tuner that is asserted when you press the Icom tune button, and ah4 key, which is asserted by the tuner when it needs a tune level signal from the Icom. The amp needs a separate PTT key line from the Icom RCA connector to the kat500, and another RCA cable from kat500 to amp. The AH4 Key line is distinct from exciter to amp PTT and although both have key in their names, they have different purposes. One of our diagrams in the owners manual may have omitted the RCA keying cables. A manual revision is in the works. 73 de Dick, K6KR Thanks for the info Dick. The use of the word KEY in the Icom description of pin 1 was confusing me. Your explanation makes this much clearer now. I also got a reply on this offlist and was told they got their 7100 KAP500/KAT500 setup working with the interface explained in the IC-7100 advanced instruction manual page 2-11. In addition to wiring the PTT OUT circuit, you also must configure H-SEND in the SET CONNECTIONS menu (page 17-26). Also found on page 19-11 is a simple mod to output the band information. I'm not sure how this would be used with the Elecraft pair without building another cable. We will look into this later, unless someone has tried already. So I think we can say the Icom transcerivers with AH-4 ATU interface description on page 8, and figure 3 in the the KAT500 tuner manual would be in error if all Icom AH-4 interfaces are the same ? 73 Jeff kb2m __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] Spectrogram download site
Lance, I just downloaded it and scanned with both Malwarebytes and MS Security Essentials. No problems detected with either. I have heard of Norton giving false positives in the past, and have long since stopped using it. 73, Don W3FPR On 11/8/2013 10:05 AM, Lance Collister, W7GJ wrote: Hi Don, My Norton AntiVirus program won't let me run the last version of Spectrogram from your website (the one with the exe file) ; it says it was infected with "WS.Reputation.1", and deletes the file automatically. Re: [Elecraft] K3/KX3 interface to N1MM logger - WITH DSP digital data ??
Yes! But I'm not sure what your DSP DIGITAL DATE is referring to. I have used my K3 AND KX3 with n1mm for RTTY and PSK31. These are using the computer sound card. I built an interface for my KX3 to include xforner isolation for both audio lines and transistor switching for PTT and CW KEYING. It emulates the K3 in audio and serial control functions to n1mm. ...bill Sent from my Verizon Wireless 4G LTE DROID Steve WB3LGC wrote: >Has anyone interfaced your K3/KX3 to N1MM logger - WITH DSP data for >PSK/RTTY/CW digital modes??? > >73, Steve WB3LGC > > > >__ >Elecraft mailing list >Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft >Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm >Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net > >This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net >Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html > __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] Spectrogram
While it's convenient to have all the settings specified by N0SS (SK), keep in mind that there are a variety of other audio spectrum analyzer programs available which are suitable for K2 CAL FIL alignment. For example, I used Spectran (written by I2PHD) under Windows 7 the other day to re-align my K2 CW filters. It's available free at http://www.weaksignals.com/ . 73, Steve VE3SMA __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
