[Elecraft] K3/0 to K3 Remote stopped working
Hi all. I could use some advice. I have spent the last several months building the complete K-Line for my MD summer QTH. I am now preparing to operate via RemoteRig from a K3/0 located remotely. I was hoping for a test run in Sweepstakes this weekend. Everything was working fine, and starting yesterday, I cannot bring up the remote K3 in MD. I just get a busy signal at the control end, at my current location in NJ. In the past, when this has happened, cycling my control end RemoteRig and/or router has fixed it. Not helping now. I have the ability to remotely cycle power to the radio end RemoteRig, the K3, and the remote router. I can use Logmein to the radio end PC to start microbit to examine and restart the radio end RemoteRig. That doesn't solve it, and all parameters look normal. I can remotely cycle power to the radio end router. Still no joy. I have cameras located in front of the radio end (remote) gear in MD. The green light on the radio-end RemoteRig glows solid green a few seconds after I cycle it, so it is definitely talking to the router. The router is talking to the internet because I can remotely control all these other functions --- Logmein, power switch, cameras --- from a distance. Nothing I do brings up the remote K3. I had the same problem yesterday, and after a couple hours of trying all of the above, it suddenly came back to life --- enabling me to work K9W. Does anyone have any suggestions? Re: [Elecraft] K3 6m noise figure
I'd be interested in the result as well. I can tell you, though in an extremely qualitative and anecdotal manner, that the PR6 makes it possible for me to copy signals that I cannot copy without it -- even in my noisy location. [Elecraft] K3 6m noise figure
This was discussed few couple months ago and it prompted me to make measurements on 6m 10m, for both K3 and KX3: Note the measurements were made at 2.8 KHz bandwidth whereas Elecraft specs are for 500-Hz bandwidth (correction factor is 7.5 dB lower for 500-Hz): I use an ARR preamp but specs are equivalent for the PR6. http://www.kl7uw.com/HF.htm scroll down half page Noise figure can be deduced from these measurements. For a 8-dB Noise Figure, the receiver sensitivity is -140 dBm at 500-Hz bw I measured -130 dBm at 2800-Hz which is NF = 10-dB* *internal PRE is turned on. With addition of ARR preamp and turning off PRE, sensitivity is -137 dBm with bw of 2800 Hz (which translates to -144.5 dBm at bw = 500 Hz) which is NF = 1 dB. Both ARR and PR6 have spec lower in NF. -137 dBm was near the lowest level I was able to produce in these tests so actual performance might be even better with the external preamp. Caveat: My measurements were using the XG3 enclosed in a metal box with external attenuators to reach lower signal levels. My measurements have a level of uncertainty so should only be used as a relative indication of sensitivity. NF should be performed with lab quality Noise Figure meters or using accurate thermal noise sources to produce hot/cold ratios which are more accurate than signal levels. My tests affirm the specs given by Elecraft as being close to observed. 73, Ed - KL7UW - From: Peter Torry peter.to...@talktalk.net To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: [Elecraft] K3 6m noise figure Message-ID: 52860a6a.6030...@talktalk.net Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed I am trying to calculate my link budget for 50 MHz and was wondering if anyone has measured the K3 noise figure on this band using the K3 alone and not with the PR6. Re: [Elecraft] Ham Radio and the Cloud
Seems to me hobbyist computing is just following what ham radio went through with appliance operators. Bit by bit, electronic technology and packaging technology made the average ham rig come with a label non-serviceable parts inside. Maybe what the hobbyist PC world needs to discover is QRP. And maybe they already have with Arduino and Raspberry Pi and all that--their version of SW+, Rockmites, K1s and Argonauts. All the emphasis on remote rigs, computer rig control, SDR-based radios seem to indicate a natural progression towards a ham radio cloud for everything...including the RF deck. There have been superstations available for remote control by monthly subscription for decades. I belonged to one based in Orange County CA for a year that I could access with my FT470 HT in the late 80's. Now there is at least one system accessible using, I think, a dummy K3 connected via the internet . That's pretty much Cloud Hamming. But I would hesitate to make any kind of projections about ham radio. It is too diverse and there are way to many inquisitive and clever hams to predict where it's going at any particular time. [Elecraft] KX3 High RCV Noise - need advice
I began this adventure by upgrading my KX3s Firmware to 1.61 and 1.23. After that I attached my station antenna (which is normally connected to an Icom 7700) to make sure the KX3 worked. From the KX3 I noticed a high amount of noise whilst receiving. A flip of the coax switch connects the same antenna to the Icom radio and it shows pretty low noise. Quick noise test comparison examples: * KX3Icom* 40M S5-6 S2-3 30M S8-9 S0-1 20M S8-9 S0 17M S7-8 S0 15M S6 S0 Both radios were tuned to a no signal portion of the CW bands and the radios were in the CW mode. Both radios bandpass were set to 500 Hz. On each band, the antenna (66 ft doublet w/ auto tuner) was tuned to SWR of 1.5 or less. Before I elaborate further... I Downgraded the KX3s software back to 1.50 and 1.21 and I still have high noise. When a signal (higher level than the KX3s receive noise level) is tuned in, both radios S meter tracks the same, i.e S9+10 = same. Also, I got out my very old Elecraft XG-1, installed a fresh battery, and S8.5 on the Icom = S8-S9 bars on the KX3. With the antenna removed from the KX3 there is no noise. My KX3 is serial no 1588, the Automatic Ant Tuner is switched to BYP, and I do not have the Roofing Filter installed. AGC Threshold = 005. Changing AGC Threshold to 004 reduces noise, but the S-meter shows the same reading. ATT is off, PREamp is off. I use my KX3 in the field for SOTA 95 percent of the time. The times I have used it in my home shack it has performed well. Now it's very difficult to hear low level signals. My question to the group is... Why does my KX3 present such high receive noise? Re: [Elecraft] RTTY with K3/0
Bob, In FSK mode MMTTY's REV button doesn't change the transmit polarity. Transmit polarity in FSK is controlled by the radio, and the only thing MMTTY's REV button can do in FSK is reverse the receive polarity, which as you noted is the opposite to what you want. Re: [Elecraft] KX3 High RCV Noise - need advice
Rich, Your observation that changing the AGC Threshold is the key to your question. The KX3 has adequate RX gain to hear the antenna noise. The AGC Threshold controls just how much of that noise is perceived by the KX3 as a valid signal and is worthy of being heard as a valid signal. Some experimentation at your local noise level is in order. 73, Don W3FPR On 11/15/2013 9:14 PM, Richard Patrick wrote: I began this adventure by upgrading my KX3s Firmware to 1.61 and 1.23. Re: [Elecraft] DTMF codes on the K3
Not yet, Stan, but I understood Wayne to say that this feature could be added in a future K3 firmware upgrade. Like you, I require DTMF tones to access repeaters. Currently I am getting by using a small portable MF tone generator held up close to the microphone, but that arrangement is far from satisfactory. I bought a Kenwood MC-59DM DTMF microphone, hoping to use that until I realised that the tones are generated within the transceiver. 73 de David G4DMP In a recent message, R Stanley Sutton rssutt...@gmail.com writes Is there a way to transmit DTMF codes on the K3. I use a repeater on 2 meters that requires codes for some functions.
