Re: [Elecraft] K3 Powerpole Replacement

2013-12-10 Thread F5vjc
Powerpoles are entirely suited to purpose, if (of course) fitted correctly.

If connectors are pulling apart and they are fitted correctly, there is
obviously far too much pull stress on the connecting cable, which must be
relieved by some means.

Simple...'just do it'.

Re: [Elecraft] XG3 Band Change

2013-12-10 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
Well, I HAVE heard of people going "down" to 10 meters. And 160 meters
didn't get the name "top band" for being down. But it's been a long, long
time since anyone I heard spoke in meters.

Been a ham since '52. Maybe it was my interest in the history of "wireless"
that indoctrinated me.

But I've learned to leave up and down out unless I'm specific about
wavelength or frequency.

In over 50 yrs of ham radio, I've never heard ANYONE on a lower band say
they are going down to 10 meters, or 6 meters. My sentence above points
right at it.
I said a LOWER band. Even the old timers said "I'm going down to 160
meters."
Why fight tradition?

I always wondered why I always hit the wrong button on the XG (nice product,
by the way). I never stopped to think about it. The good news is, the
lower button moves the LED in the same physical direction as the button
pressed. :o)

Probably because I design Human Interfaces (hardware and software) for a
living, this was my first impression. I was simply navigating up or down a
stack of LEDs. I never thought about the buttons in terms of wavelength or
frequency.

But I'll admit that despite hamming it up for 43 years, I still don't feel
comfortable calling 160 meters "The Top Band" and can never think of 70 cm
as my personal "Bottom Band". I've always thought in terms of frequency,
like QSY. Up to me means increasing frequency not reducing the wavelength.

Love my XG3!

Re: [Elecraft] Internal Antenna Tuner and SPE Expert Amplifier Questions

2013-12-10 Thread k6xt
No indication which SPE amp. It makes a difference because IIRC the 1K
tuner can't be bypassed. The 2K can. I use the 2K-FA. There's no need to
use the K3 tuner with the 2K as its input SWR is satisfactorily low. 30W
from K3 drives 2K to the legal limit. Off, the 2K tuner is switched out
of the ckt. In that configuration if your coax needs tuner help you'd
have to use the internal K3 tuner, or an external box.

If the external box can handle output of the SPE amp I'd connect it
between amp and antenna. Given a choice I'd want the K3 internal tuner
for convenience if nothing else. It remembers its settings per band so
your task is only to switch it on or off as needed.

FYI the 2K-FA in standby makes little - if any - fan noise. Not much
penalty to have it on whenever the K3 is on. There's a provision for the
2K-FA to receive an "I've just been turned on/off" signal from the K3
that also turns on, and off, the 2K-FA. Don't know about the 1K.

I just finished reading the SPE instruction manual. They say that the input
match of the SPE Expert is good enough that they recommend turning the internal
tuner of the driving transceiver OFF. The recommend that you do not cascade a
tuner such as the Palstar on the output of the SPE. They do not mention a
manual tuner at the antenna, but I would think it to be OK as that is what a
Gamma or T match on a beam would be, as well as other matching devices. I
think that the intent is to use the SPE tuner even if you are running the K3
barefoot but I have not yet completed my installation and put my SPE Expert in
service.

Good Morning,
It's Mark Griffin KB3Z. I was looking at an SPE Expert amplifier and I see it
has an internal antenna tuner which can handle SWR's of up to 4:0. But, I was
wondering if I connected the output of my K3 to the input of the amplifier and
then the antenna to the output of the amplifier, If I used the K3 internal
antenna tuner to decrease the SWR to a reasonable level would this work? I
don't currently have the internal antenna tuner in the K3. It is perhaps a bad
question to ask, but I am currently using a Palstar AT2K as my antenna tuner.
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Mark Griffin, KB3Z

Re: [Elecraft] PR6-10 Receiver Pre Amplifier

2013-12-10 Thread Don Wilhelm

Ray,

The short answer is no - you do not need a separate RX antenna, but it
can also be used with an RX antenna if desired.

If you do not already have it, you will need to install the KXV3 or
KXV3A option.
The instructions for connecting and using the preamp are in the Preamp
manual.

Re: [Elecraft] PR6-10 Receiver Pre Amplifier

2013-12-10 Thread Mike K2MK
Ray & Stephen,

And of course you will need the KXV3 or KXV3A board in your K3. Further,
when you press the RX ANT button for 6, 10, and 12 meters it will be
remembered so that you don't have to push it each time you use those bands.
And lastly, the preamp is activated by a single wire connection to the
accessory socket so that it activated for only those bands where it is used.
When de-activated the preamp has a pass through connection for a separate
receive antenna to be used for the lower frequency bands. The mechanical and
electrical design of the preamp is very well thought out.

If you are already using your accessory socket you'll need a DB15 Y cable
which is available from Elecraft for a reasonable price.

I have the PR6-10 and I am very happy with its performance on all 3 bands.

Re: [Elecraft] PR6-10 Receiver Pre Amplifier

2013-12-10 Thread Stephen Prior
Ray,

It fits neatly between the RX in and out BNCs on the back panel. You then
select the separate receiver input via the RXant button of the front
panel. I am away from the K3 at the moment but that is what I did
successfully with an ANC noise reducer once. I too am thinking seriously
about buying the PR6-10 as I'm about to take deliver of a KPA500!

[Elecraft] PR6-10 Receiver Pre Amplifier

2013-12-10 Thread Ray G3XLG
Hi All
I am thinking of buying this accessory but I am a bit confused.!
I use a 4-El SteppIR beam for the HF bands as both my receive & transmit
antenna with my K3.
Would I need to set up a separate receive antenna to use the PR6-10 Preamp
or can I use it with my existing TX/RX antenna?
