Re: [Elecraft] K3 BATT LOW

2014-03-08 Thread Ed Muns
This message means that the nominal 12 VDC supply voltage has dropped below
the minimum value set in CONFIG. It is often an intermittent connection in
the 12 VDC line.

The error message is misleading and confusing to most of us. However,
QRPers will "get it" because they are used to running their rigs off
batteries. Chief K3 Engineer N6KR is a QRPer. ;>)

In my February Aruba trip, one of our K3s flashed this message. I searched
the K3 Operators Manual PDF and found only one reference to "batt" which was
the CR2032 real time clock battery. When the K3 finally shut off entirely
after that message about 24 hours into ARRL DX CW, I went off-line and
replaced the CR2032. Of course, that wasn't the problem. Finally thinking
to Google the problem led to prior threads on this reflector about the real
problem. Futzing with the connections to the 12 VDC supply for that K3
fixed the problem.

I agree, that it would be great for both the K3 Operators Manual and Fred's
book to cover this error message.

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement

2014-03-08 Thread Kevin

Good Evening,
The weather has returned to normal: rain, more rain, and then rain
again. I may have seen the sun for an hour this week but that would be
exaggerating. The fog is fairly dense too; often slowing or blocking
access to the Internet. Hopefully we will get enough water for this
summer. It has been a very dry winter but nothing like the state south
of here.

Propagation has been good this week but the time change may improve
it for this week's nets. Forty meters will be open further east for me
tomorrow. Twenty may also work a wider swath. Then, as the sun moves
further north, propagation will keep improving with bouts of spring and
summer thunderstorms. I may be a little ahead of the curve but I am
getting ready to buy this year's seeds.

Please join us tomorrow.

7045 kHz at 0100z Monday (6 PM PDT Sunday)

Kevin. KD5ONS

[Elecraft] XV222 Transverter Stability Issue

2014-03-08 Thread Lloyd Korb
I recently completed the assembly and calibration on a XV222 transverter. I
am using it with a K2.

When I finally put the top cover in place I noticed that the output power
was jumping around. Initially I thought that one of the connecting cables
were not properly seated or maybe the output cables to the wattmeter and
antenna were not tight.

I noticed that when I picked up the transverter, to move it, the power
output jumped around. Pushing on the top cover also made the power output
jump around.

When I removed the top cover the output was stable. I could push on the
chassis and it did not change the power output.

I thought that maybe the top cover was not making a good RF connection to
the rest of the chassis so I went back and cleaned and sanded all of the
mating surfaces. This had no effect.

As long as the top cover is not in place it is stable. For now I am just
running with the cover off.

Has anyone had a similar problem?

For those who are newer to this reflector, Don Brown KD5NDB was an early

Sadly, Don passed away in late 2011, after a long battle with cancer.

Re: [Elecraft] Muting one K3 while other is transmitting

2014-03-08 Thread Fred Jensen
To the original post: "muting" the second K3 [i.e. silencing it] does
nothing to "protect" it from excessive RF input ... and possibly I
misunderstand the post too.

This was the subject of a thread not long ago on the list. If the two
antennas are in each others' near fields, the antennas are a coupled
system and the power delivered to the receiver from the other antenna
can be [and likely will be] enough to damage the receiver. I've seen it
happen to a K3.

Unfortunately, the end of the near field and the beginning of the far
field is undefined at HF, near just fades into far. It's a function of
wavelength and size of the antenna among many other factors. The near
field of a Voice of America sterba curtain on 20 MHz is likely much
larger than that of a ham dipole on 80 meters.

I would advise great care and some measurement unless you can assure
that the two antennas are definitely not parasitically coupled.

a Ten Tec Titan driving the other. I have done this on 20, 15, and 10M,
both at home, and on county expeditions for the California QSO Party. At
our CA QSO Party site, we have done it on 40M and 80M using antennas
separated by about 300 ft, and we are using KPA500s. We have one K3 on
CW and the other on SSB.

This setup does not work for all antenna setups and orientations -- at
CQP the antennas are carefully located so that their nulls are in the
direction of the other antenna on the same band. We can do this because
Yagis aimed at 70 degrees azimuth provide a very good pattern to work

Re: [Elecraft] K3 - WinkeyUSB Keying Issue

2014-03-08 Thread iain macdonnell - N6ML
The problem I had with the WKremote solution is that it sends a letter
at a time. It has to wait for you to key a complete letter before it
sends it over the network to the remote site. This results in strange
spacing - it takes longer to key in a '6' than it does to send a 'N',
so, e.g., my callsign comes out as "N 6ML".

I believe that the RemoteRig solution sends individual elements (dits
and dahs), not complete letters, over the network to avoid this
problem.

I had a problem with my remote WinKeyer a while back. Intermittently,
CW would come out "warbly" (almost like RF getting into the keying
line, but it wasn't that). When the weather got really cold (by W6
standards - i.e. below 40F:), it'd fail completely first thing in the
morning, until I turned the K3 on and let things warm up for a while
(the WinKeyer sits on top of the K3). I was worried that it was
something inside the K3 that was failing, but after I replaced both
the WinKeyer and the cable connecting it to the K3, it's been 100%
fine since. I still don't know if it was the WinKeyer or the cable
that was causing the problem, but didn't want to have to make a second
trip in those "frigid" temps :)

I'm amazed that works at all, for two reasons. One is, what do you do
with the RX line to the K3? It can't just connect in parallel to the TX
lines from both the P3 and the computer because they would conflict with
each other.

Also, the computer should connect to the "PC" serial port of the P3, not
the "XCVR" port.

I've never tried using a single P3 with two K3s, but the way to hook up
the serial ports would be:

- PC RS-232 connects to P3's "PC" connector.
- Switch box's common port connects to P3's "XCVR" connector and the
other two ports to the two K3s.

You might have to cycle power on the K3 and/or P3 to get them to connect
properly when you switch K3s.

Hi David
If you mean how to set-up the Winkey Server/Client there is a very well written
document available on K1EL website:
http://k1el.tripod.com/WKremote.html
It is indeed very easy and simple to set up if you follow that document. It did
not take me many minutes before I had adjusted to operating RC CW that way: you
have a small latency from the WK when using two linked WKs. But it is really
not a problem in my view. I have used CW for over 50 years. For very fast QSK
QSOs, though, I think you would not like it. For standard bk-type QSOs its
indeed useable - even when through an internet connection with 200 msec
ping-time.

If you mean RC in general, there are many ways to do it. My low-cost solution
is just one.

I wish to ask for a firmware change that would keep the KPA500 un-keyed
until the tune button is released on the K3 after the KAT500 has
completed a tuning cycle. I have the tuning power set to 15 W on the
K3, which ends up as 300 W out if I have forgotten to put the KPA500 to
standby before starting a tune cycle.
If there is a setting already available that I have missed that achieves
the same I apologise in advance.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 - WinkeyUSB Keying Issue

2014-03-08 Thread David Cutter
What an astonishing idea! I have hesitated to make a remote station because
of the latency problem, but this will encourage me to look further. Do you
have a diagram of your set-up you could share?

Jed, I would also suspect the cable (having had some problems with one
myself).

Not directly related: I have just tried connecting two winkeyers in
Server/Client mode. It works great. I just came back from a short trip to
OX and worked RC on internet with a 200 msec delay and it worked real
nice. Used a WK-compatible keyer from G3ZLP at the Client end and an
original Winkeyer in the shack at home. It is certainly an easy way to
operate remotely using a paddle.

[Elecraft] Muting one K3 while other is transmitting

2014-03-08 Thread Christian Janssen

Hi,

I have two K3s running equally on one band in SSB. If transceiver A
transmits, transceiver B should be muted to protect the RX of transceiver B.

When in SSB and a microphone connected and just pressing the PTT, you
also send with transceiver B.

I haven't found anything in the manual how to do this.

Hope there is help out there.

Many thanks.
