[Elecraft] PX3 cables ?
Many have ordered PX3. It might be interesting to know, if a set of cables are included or available as option. I would like to have them delivered with PX3. Thanks to Sam K5OIA pointing me to Wikipedia re MISO (master input slave output) I was able to rebut jokes from immediate family members re Japanese soup. [Elecraft] P3 screen refresh rate in SCAN
Hi everyone! Just built a new P3 couple of days ago. Been playing with it (naturally). Have a question about screen refresh rate in SCAN: when i set the span to something wide, like 150 or 200 and put the K3 into scan - after one or two full screens it gets kind of choppy. Starts to freeze up and skip. What do you guys normally have your refresh rate set at? Thanks in advance! [Elecraft] Loving the K3/0 Mini, but some questions...
Hi All, I received my K3/0 Mini Thursday night. I had it up and running very quickly. Of course, I love it! Just a few questions for Elecraft or anyone else who is using one: 1 - What is the RJ connector on the bottom edge for? I don't see it documented in the manual. 2 - Are the left-side 3.5mm and 8-pin Mic connectors enabled by default? 3 - The sidetone on CW is generated by the RRC unit, so it might be a question for them -- is there a way to adjust the pitch? Mine is at about 750 Hz, way too high for me. For those of you who will use the K3/0 mini with a headset -- use the front-pane phones jack! The speaker 3.5mm mini on the left side is very hot and will blow your ears off if you have volume too high. [Elecraft] Echo and feedback un SSB
Hi, New K3 owner here... I have looked in the KE7X book, and can not find the answer to two questions... 1. When in transmit using SSB, I am getting some sort of audio feedback only when I have the monitor level turned up. The louder I turn up Monitor, the more feedback I get. 2. I have somehow turned off the NR for SSB mode only... When I press the 8 key, (NR), I get N/A if in SSB mode. If in CW, it works fine... If this is in the KE7X book, I must have missed them... If it is, just let me know what section it is in and I can find it. Using this radio is somewhat of a humbling experience... Re: [Elecraft] [KX3] MIC Bias has no effect
I saved this detailed note that was posted on this list a couple of years ago. Maybe Elecraft needs a KX3 FAQ with this info. Re: KX3 - Buzzing in headphones varies with MON level Posted By: kk7p Date: Wed Jun 20, 2012 12:49 pm I dragged out my CM-500 to test this. The CM-500 gets its mic bias from BOTH the tip and the ring of the gray mic connector. This is too bad, because the tip voltage is controlled by the MENU:MIC BIAS ON|OFF but the ring is always biased by the PTT/UP/DN logic supply. To get around the problem, do the following: 1) MENU MIC BIAS OFF You will find you need a lot less Mic Gain for full ALC action. In my KX3, I need about 30 if BIAS is ON, and 17 if BIAS is OFF, for full ALC. 2) Since the PTT/UP/DN is a digital logic supply, it may have some residual noise that the CM-500 passes as audio to the tip of the connector. Go to MENU: TX GATE and tap 1 to turn it ON then adjust VFO A for 01 or 02, whatever it takes to kill the residual buzz. In the case of my KX3 + CM-500, this cured the problem. And in Dave's case, it might not cure the problem of noisy neighbors, but will allow the KX3 to better ignore them! 73, Lyle KK7P -- Thanks, Lyle. wunder K6WRU On Apr 19, 2014, at 9:27 AM, d...@lightstream.net d...@lightstream.net wrote: I'm connecting a Yamaha CM500 headset to the KX3, and find that the microphone works properly regardless of the MIC BIAS setting (MIC BTN is set to OFF). Thanks to all for the responses. It makes sense, and yes, I do find that the mic is 'hotter' w/ the Mic Bias turned off. [Elecraft] K3 Erratic RF Power Drop, comes back up by just tapping top of radio
Thanks in advance for your help and ideas. My K3 recently started exhibiting an occasional RF power drop. It drops from 100w to sometimes 50w or 30w or lower. Then by tapping the top of the radio it goes back to full power. The SWR is stable and normal during all of this, and I verified that the main power supply is stable during the event. It seems like it is sometimes brought on by routine heating and cooling. Like when I am running RTTY off and on. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! Re: [Elecraft] K3 - FSK in not working - KIO3 boards
R2 is open and is blackened like it has been over dissipated . Now the $64,000 question is how can one over dissipate a 220 ohm resistor fed from 5 volts thru 10K ohms ??? Even if there was no resistor fed from 5 v it would be a tad under 1/8 watt - which is probably on the edge for a 0508 SMD chip resistor . R98 on the RF board feeding P35 is in fact 9980 ohms and the runner to P35 is Ok. The other end of R98 shows 4.97 volts from U12 so the 5V regulator is OK . There are 1000 pfd caps to ground from the 15 pin ACC connector before the 220 ohm resistor so unlikely RF could have done it plus I have a 2.4 inch #31 core with 14 T right at the connector before it runs to the N1MM FSK keying box with the standard open collector NPN to FSK in. So its beyond me - off to FRY's Electronics to see if they have 0508 220 ohm strips hanging on a nail . Welcome any ideas . Maybe same gremlin that blew a 1N4007 D35 reverse spike diode on the 12 ACC jack with the P3 only thing ever on it , two weeks after I fired up the K3 73 Hank K7HP Thanks -- I pulled it out and there they are -- 73 Hank K7HP The voltage on the FSD in line is floating at about 3.2 volts and even finger leakage pulls it down so its from a very high sourfce impedance and does niot key the FSk. I have tracked from J23 ACC connector to P90/J90 on the KIO3 Dsub RS232 IO board the PTT in , KEY out , AUX and all are the nominal 220 ohms shown on the schematic . Pin 16 FSK in is about 6 megohms. This would indicate that R2 220 ohms is open or something along that line is open . My question is where the heck is R2 ? Or maybe more to the point - Is R2 on the back side of the horizontal board marked KIO3 Remote I/O Module with J23 (15 pin) and J24 (9 pin RS232) that then plugs into J90 on the KIO3 vertical Main board ? I hate to pull all that apart and find its somewhere else ?? Of course it could be a lousy solder joint somewhere in the run (incidentally the 5v is solid at pin 20 J90 and at pin 3 of J35/P35 on the RF board. Thanks - if I don't hear anything guess it will be tear it apart and see ! Re: [Elecraft] Echo and feedback un SSB
Many, if not most, headsets found in the typical hamshack have significant audio leakage around the ear cups, and if they’re open back it’s even worse. If you’re wearing headphones with the speaker turned off, you can get still get audio feedback while MON is turned on, and of course, it gets worse the more you have the monitor level turned up. Best thing — use MON to check your signal and rather than leave it on to listen to your own fine glorious vocal tones, turn it OFF. Re: [Elecraft] trade 3 week old KX3 for Eagle
Hi Lane: You might try seeing if there is a group for the Ten Tec Eagle. I'd suspect that there is one. And, you could post there. I doubt you will find many Eagle owners on the Elecraft list! But, you might find an Eagle owner, who.. like you.. does not like some aspect of the rig (like the missing bands) and would be happy to move to the KX3. That said... all radios these days seem to have menus. My experience with my KX3 is that I don't have to change things very often. My most used menu item is turning on and off the backlight... or bypassing the ATU... which I need to do when using my AlexLoop. Otherwise, I don't visit the menu very often, once I had set the features I wanted. I gave the Eagle a long hard look, but in the end, I went with the KX3, for it's portability.. and, for me, it was a good decision. But, everyone has different needs, so I hope you find a deal. 73 de Ray K2ULR KX3 #211 BTW the serial number is also a menu item. :) __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
Re: [Elecraft] PSK Problem
You obviously do not have enough audio drive. Review your MicroHam documentation to be able to configure the Audio Out for Line level. Once you have sufficient audio from the MicroHam, you should be able to adjust the Line In of the K3 to produce 4 bars solid on the ALC meter with the 5th bar flashing. You can do that adjustment in TX TEST mode so you do not have RF output. Once you have achieved that proper audio level, adjust your power with the power knob. Ignore the conventional advice to show no ALC - that does not apply to the K3 for 2 reasons. First is that the 1st 4 bars of the ALC meter do not indicate ALC at all, but are used as an aid to setting the proper audio level (sort of like a VU meter). The 5th bar does indicate the onset of ALC. Secondly, the K3 power control is different than most other amateur transceivers in that it is a closed loop system trying to seek the power set by the power knob. It does not control power properly if the audio drive is less than the proper level. 73, Don W3FPR On 4/19/2014 12:57 PM, Christopher Soames wrote: Hi All, have been having problems with PSK on my K3. Re: [Elecraft] A KX3 Oddity when Changing LED BRT setting in Menu
Phil, While in the menu, the LED BRT selections show the LED Brightness when (and if) the LEDs are turned on in normal operation. So yes, that is normal behavior while in the menu. Re: [Elecraft] K3 - FSK in not working - KIO3 boards
Hank, You might want to check the output of that NPN transistor circuit before you connect it to the K3 FSK input again. If there is a base to collector short, it could put the full RS-232 level on the FSK input pin, and that is quite likely to fry something in the K3 (like that 220 ohm resistor). That NPN transistor should show open circuit during non-keyed times and show as a short when it is turned on by the RS-232 signal line. It should never show any voltage at all in either state. The base K3 circuits are protected with a series reverse polarity protection diode (the KPA3 does not because of the diode voltage drop). However, if the FSK Keying box were connected and powered at the same time as the reverse polarity event, there could have been some strange current flow between the K3 FSK input pin and the FSK box. The full circuit would have to be analyzed to know the answer for certain. 73, Don W3FPR On 4/19/2014 3:58 PM, Pfizenmayer wrote: R2 is open and is blackened like it has been over dissipated . Re: [Elecraft] K3 Erratic RF Power Drop, comes back up by just tapping top of radio
Dean, A problem that comes and goes with tapping usually indicates a bad connection somewhere. Does it do the same thing when operated into a dummy load? If it does, then there is a definite problem with the K3, but if it operates properly into a dummy load, you can first suspect something in the antenna/feedline. Yes, small vibrations in the K3 case can cause similar behavior if there is a loose UHF connector on the K3. First step is to check the tightness of the UHF connectors. Finger-tight is not tight enough, give the connectors a gentle tug with pliers after you get them finger-tight. 73, Don W3FPR On 4/19/2014 1:57 PM, Dean wrote: Thanks in advance for your help and ideas. Re: [Elecraft] K2 Build
Just finished my K2 (just the basic one at this stage, still waiting for the postman to deliver the SSB module). It really is a great kit, and lots of fun to build. Now I'm just doing the filter alignment with Spectragram, and will do the final dial calibration once propagation picks up and I can hear WWV. The RF probe is only there if you run into trouble later, to help you trace signals, and the only thing you test at stage 1 with the frequency counter is to verify that the frequency counter can in fact count. I don't think you need to wait for replacement parts for your probes before starting stage 2 -- just complete stage 2, and at the end when they get you to power on the rig, you can do the initial frequency counter test then (at the end of stage 2, you'll need the frequency counter to set up the receiver on 40m). Enjoy the build, it's a great feeling to make that first contact :-) 73, Matt VK2RQ On 20 Apr 2014, at 9:41 am, Lane software.research.developm...@gmail.com wrote: Hi, I'm doing a K2 build, and was doing good till I got to the RF and freq. probe assemblies. [Elecraft] vfo encoder noise on quiet band
Does anyone else notice the vfo encoder noise when tuning on a dead quiet band? If you spin the vfo quickly you hear noise in the audio. Re: [Elecraft] [KX3] Small Problem or Finger Trouble?
Gary, Not finger trouble, but just the way logic circuits work. There is a pullup resistor on the ACC2 IO PTT input - which makes it high unless one takes measures to short it to ground. If you select Hi=PTT with nothing (or nothing active low) into the ACC2 jack, PTT will be asserted by virtue of the pullup resistor. Normal operation for most PTT switches is to provide a path to ground (logic Low) when the switch is closed and an open circuit when the switch is open. In order to provide a logic high level when the switch is open, the pullup resistor is necessary. So bottom line, the PTT input is normally at +5 volts. If you have nothing in the ACC2 jack that creates a short between PTT and ground, the level will be High - so setting the ACC2 PTT menu to Hi will activate PTT. Normal PTT is for a low (short to ground) when PTT is active, but there are other schemes that may require PTT=Hi although they are not as common. 73, Don W3FPR On 4/19/2014 7:19 PM, Gary Hawkins wrote: I was setting up my KX3 for a headset and external PTT connected via ACC2 today. Re: [Elecraft] Echo and feedback un SSB
Lane, That back of the cave sound can be one of two things. One is that there is monitor audio reaching your microphone due to either using the speaker or audio leakage from your headphones, The second is that it is simply your perception. There is a very slight delay between your voice and the output of the monitor. If your ears are sensitive enough to pick up that delay, it will sound like an echo in your head. In other words there may be no problem. I suspect that is the case whether no 1 or no 2 is the cause. 73, Don W3FPR On 4/19/2014 9:10 PM, lane zeitler via Elecraft wrote: When I use the ssb monitor is sounds like I am at the back of a cavestill going via the settings. [Elecraft] David Cole stuff
1) If you're using the monitor function without headphones to monitor with...that's your problem. In other words, if you're monitoring via a speaker instead of headphones...this is creating the feedback loop which will only get worse as you turn it up. Put your headphones on to monitor. You're ProIII (assuming you still have it) was no different. 2) Not a clue...I'm sitting in a bar with my lovely not in front of the radio so if indeed 8 is the NR function...press it hold it to access the setting function...choose what is most effective...tap it to turn it on off. Not a clue as to why N/A is displaying...not a clue...unless of course; as you suggest, you somehow turned it off in the menu somewhere. Probably best not to change to much in the menu until you get more familiar with the radio...Fred's book is a must IMO. KD0BCF Two possibilities exist... [Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement
Good Evening, Spring is slowly changing things around here. Highs each day in the upper 40s with lows each night in the mid 30s. Even though it is still getting cold each night I continue to hear the frogs in the nearby marsh. A pileated woodpecker squawked very close to the house this afternoon; hopefully looking for a dead, standing tree to chip up. There have been two nesting pairs within earshot for the last few years. The trillium have bloomed their way up the mountain, flowering dogwood is next. Propagation has not been good for the most part though there were spots of good hearing. Lengthening days have allowed 20 meters to stay open later into the evening but forty does work before nightfall. A CME due to hit soon (if it has not already hit) may disrupt tomorrow's nets. We will have to test that hypothesis. Please join us tomorrow. 14050 kHz at 2200z Sunday (3 PM PDT Sunday) 7045 kHz at 0100z Monday (6 PM PDT Sunday) 73, Kevin.
