[Elecraft] Multiple Port Issues

2014-06-07 Thread Jim Rogers
It seems one of the most frequent posts to this list concern
setting up, and configuring multiple serial ports for the K3 to do WSJT,
HRD, DX4Win etc.

Years ago I found the solution and although to some a bit pricey,
it has never failed me and is strictly plug and play. My station will
never be without a U.S.Interface Navigator now being marketed by
Timewave and available from HRO. This device provides 6 FTDI serial
devices on a built in USB hub that do 1) CAT 2) PTT, 3) K1EL WinKeyer,
4) FSK, 5) RS232, 6) Navigator Configuration. Additionally the
Navigator has one of the lowest noise USB Codecs I have ever found for
those sound card applications. A cable for your specific radio is
available at an additional cost, or you can as I did, build you own.

As I operate many different modes, from CW to Meteor Scatter using
many varied application programs from HRD to WSJT-9 using external
sequencers. I discovered, that to protect my external equipment, I
needed to consolidate all the PTT functions to one source. I have a
white paper describing how I accomplished this simply and easily, with
flexibility for future configurations, available upon request.

The final caveat, I have no financial interest in the Navigator
or its marketing. It just works and I have at one time or the other
tried most of the other interfaces and the Navigator is my choice.

[Elecraft] K3/KAT500 ATU Tune Operation

2014-06-07 Thread Mike Hagele AC6JA via Elecraft
Is there any firmware in the works to get the K3/KAT500 ATU tune operation
to work like the K2 and KX3?
I use the ATU quite often and always find it frustrating to have to hit
TUNE and wait for the match, and then have to hit TUNE again to bring the rig
back into receive.
It's nice that all you have to do on the K2 and KX3 with the internal
ATU's is hit the TUNE button and it finds a match and automatically switches
back to receive when it's done.
Any info would be appreciated.

[Elecraft] KX3 and Mac Mini Need to Ge Started

KX3 OSX Utility will not work or see ports. Looks like I need a Mac OSX

RumLog, RumPed and KX3 and KX3 Utility? x86, x64 or PPC?

I have a Mac Mini Mac OSX version 10.6.8 Snow Leopard.

http://www.ftdichip.com/Drivers/VCP.htm

Do I need 2 of them? What is the PPC driver for?

I connected the KX3 to the KXPA100 cable and the supplied USB cable to the
PC connection on the back of the KXPA100.

What other cable do I need to hook up the the KX3?

I am running RumLog, RumPed for logging programs.

The PPC driver is only for Power PC Macs. You want either the x86 (32-bit) or
x64 (64-bit) drivers if you have an Intel processor. Look in system
information to see what processor you have in the Mac mini.

Yes. Many stations use 10 watts or less for data modes, including in contests.
Higher power will provide more contacts and greater distances, but good
atmospheric conditions and effective antennas can make QRP sound like QRO.

You can use either audio-based data modes (KX3 DATA submodes DATA-A and
AFSK-A) or the KX3's built-in DATA modes (FSK-D and PSK-D). In the latter
case, you don't even need a computer, necessarily. The KX3 will decode and
display PSK31 signals in PSK-D mode, and narrow-shift (170 Hz) RTTY in FSK-D
mode. You can also transmit in these modes by using a keyer paddle; the KX3
converts the CW to DATA. The CW message buffers will work, too.

KX3 Utility has a Terminal window that uses CW, PSK-D, or FSK-D along with
your PC's keyboard. This provides a way to use these modes without a computer
sound card -- just use the USB or RS232 cable that you normally use with KX3
Utility.

All of this applies equally to the K3/10.

I have operated in many RTTY contests with the KX3 running 5 to 12 W. Usually I
program one message buffer with just my callsign, twice, and another with a
contest exchange. When doing search-and-pounce operation, you'll very rarely
even need to use the keyer paddle.

Re: [Elecraft] [K2] Transmit Audio Problems

2014-06-07 Thread Fred Jensen
Anything other than a *perfect* sine wave will have harmonics which will
also appear in the output spectrum. Non-linearities within the radio
will also create extraneous products in the output.

With a P3 or other panadapter, take a look at WWV with the radio in AM
and the span around 6 or 7 KHz. They create a single audio baseband
that has all the bleeps, bloops, tones, 100 Hz subcarrier, IRIG-H
modulation and voice announcements, and modulate 5 transmitters with it.

The 2.5 and 20 MHz signals will look pretty much like we all expect:
The carrier surrounded very close by the two sidebands from the IRIG
subcarrier, and when the tones are on, they clearly show up, and the
spectrum is very clean. These two transmitters are apparently low-level
modulated with linear amplification.

The spectrum on 5, 10, and 15 MHz is altogether different. You will see
the carrier of course, surrounded very close by the IRIG subcarrier.
You will see the two expected sidebands from the tones when they're on.
You will also see harmonics of the tone sidebands ... depending on
conditions and time of day, I can sometimes see the 4th harmonic. Each
of the tone sidebands will have the subcarrier sidebands close around
them, as will all the harmonics. I believe these three transmitters are
Class C finals plate modulated or at least that's what I read.

The difference is really striking. It's amazing what a little
non-linearity can accomplish. :-)

[Elecraft] K2 with KPA500 and KAT500 setup

2014-06-07 Thread Robert G Strickland
I'm going to use my K2 for Field Day. In prep, I'm putting the K3 aside
and putting the K2 back in the station lineup in order to re-acquaint
myself with the its operation. Looking at the cabling diagrams in the
KPA500/KAT500 manuals, an RCA jack line from the K2 to the tuner and
another RCA jack line from the tuner to the amp looks pretty straight
forward. With this setup, do I disconnect the keying/integration cables
that normally connect the K3, KPA500 and KAT500? Assuming so, are there
any other aspects of using the K2 with the other K-Line units to which I
should pay attention? Thanks.

Re: [Elecraft] K3/KAT500 ATU Tune Operation

2014-06-07 Thread Dick Dievendorff
You shouldn't have to touch either tune button in normal operation. After a
tuner training session, the ATU should follow the frequency of your K3,
recalling memories without any button presses at all.

Additional K3/KAT500 integration along the lines of your suggestion is on the
list, but we first implemented a frequency advisory message that makes manual
button presses mostly unnecessary in normal operation.

The Navigator is a complete USB sound card modem with audio sound card
chip, six FTDI USB serial COM ports, a K1EL CW Winkeyer, to connect a
radio to a computer using a single USB cable. The Navigator duplicates
audio and control functions, and seems an expensive way to resolve
USB-Serial conversion issues.

I use a good sound card, and for substantially less cost, a mere $20,
solved all my serial port problems with a 4-port, PCIe serial port
add-on card, which the computer thinks are 4 old fashioned serial ports.
You can get them for PCI or other buss types, too, but having four
serial ports makes running multiple rigs and accessories a no -brainer.
NO driver issues. Cheap peace of mind. The sound card handles the
rest, without duplication.

Works for me, anyway! Happy trials.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 with KPA500 and KAT500 setup

2014-06-07 Thread Jack Brindle
I believe you have it right. You could also leave the AUX cable connected from
the KAT to the KPA so that the KAT can interrupt the KPA’s PTT signal. You need
either that or the RCA-plug cable that you described.

You might want to connect the K2’s serial port to the KPA’s XCVR serial port,
select RADIO=SERIAL in the KPA’s menu, and get things going that way. This is
tested (by me, among others), and is known to work. If you are using the K2 and
KPA/KAT with a computer, be sure to use a Y-adapter (you will have to make one)
so that the KPA simply eavesdrops on the computer - K2 communication. If there
is no computer, connect the two directly, then set the KPA’s SER POLL menu item
to ON so that it will send serial commands to the K2 to get the band.

Enjoy the setup!

The stock K2 doesn't have a keying line for an amp. Here's an easy way to add

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement

2014-06-07 Thread Kevin

Good Evening,
The local grouse have ceased drumming. I can only hear them in the
distance now. Today I saw my first pair of Western Tanager
http://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/western_tanager/id They enjoy the
Doug fir canopy for its insect populations. Spotting a male is fairly
simple when they are out in the open :)

Propagation has been up and down this week. Noise from local and
distant storms is increasing each week. With the longer days the higher
bands are opening and lasting later into the evening; sunspot activity
has increased the QSB as well. Three large groups have sprouted in the
last couple of days. Maybe a flare is in the making.

Please join us tomorrow.

14050 kHz at 2200z Sunday (3 PM PDT Sunday)
7045 kHz at 0100z Monday (6 PM PDT Sunday)

73,
Kevin. KD5ONS

Re: [Elecraft] K2 with KPA500 and KAT500 setup

2014-06-07 Thread Don Wilhelm
True, The K2/10 does not have a keying output, but the K2/100 does have
a Keyout output. Those contemplating the use of the KPA500 and KAT500
will likely have the KPA100 installed.

For those who want to use the K2/10 with the KPA500 or other amplifer,
read on ---

For those who would like to add an amp keying line to the K2/10, I refer
you to Tom Hammond (SK) N0SS's web information that is being preserved
by the MMARC at http://www.mmccs.com/mmarc/n0ss/.

Boards and kits are no longer available - Tom's website is now static,
but the information is there including the board layouts if some
enterprising amateur would like to create their own boards
Tom's K2 amp keying circuit can be easily be implemented on perfboard,
the circuit is not that complex.

If the K2 has the K60XV option fitted, there is a Keyout signal
available at the K60XV J2 pin 2 - connection to an appropriate output
jack is the only thing required. There is room for an RCA jack near the
key jack - just be certain the hole you drill is clear of the adjustment
for the 40 meter bandpass filter inductors.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 with KPA500 and KAT500 setup

2014-06-07 Thread Dick Dievendorff
One caution: don't use the ACC cable for one hop and an RCA cable for the
other. The amp key interrupt relay in the KAT500 is DPDT, and the KPA500 will
key if either the RCA or ACC connector key line path is connected.
