You can take the Bag with K3 and some other stuff as a Cabin Luggage!
Every year I'm going to activate EU031 and this Bag with the K3 is with
me on the Plain and also on some Ferry's.

Here are some more on Information on this Bag:

In a future firmware release we may allow the operator to select automatic L/C
updates during VFO tuning. The sound of relays updating occasionally as the VFO
is tuned would be objectionable to many, which is why we didn't do it this way
initially. If we add this feature, you'll need to select it with a menu
entry.

Hi.

I'd certainly like that option in the future if it were to become available.

To me, it makes more sense, especially if you've actually taken the trouble to
"train" the ATU for the antenna in use. (Now.. If it were also possible to
backup and restore ATU "training data", that'd be a nice feature too.)

The odd relay click during tuning is not an issue for me, but I guess for some
it
could be regarded as an extra unwanted power drain if running on internal
cells,
so yes, a menu selected option would be ideal for all I think.

Best Regards.

Yes, the MIC29302 is indeed an attractive regulator when using a 4S LiPo to
power the KX3.
Chuck N6CAP is using it in his “KX3 Portable Lipo Power Solution” project:

[Elecraft] [KX3] Simple LiPo Power Source

2014-06-10 Thread Gary Hawkins
The power supply described here,
http://chuckprice.wordpress.com/2014/04/06/kx3-portable-lipo-power-solution/,
is indeed very elegant and offers lots of protection to a LiPo battery

However, if you want a more straightforward lightweight power solution
I've had good experiences so far with a Zippy 30C Series 4200 4 cell
battery. Max voltage is 13.2V and for SOTA activations this has more
that enough voltage stability to maintain full power over a couple of
hours SSB operation. I have two Zippys in case I'm doing a two day
weekend activation.

I carry the Zippy in an old sock (washed!) and this in turn goes in an
old biscuit box that contains my KX3 (wrapped in bubble wrap), my Yamaha
CM-500 headset and other small accessories. This then goes in my
backpack and I've found this is more than enough protection for both the
battery and KX3. The power lead between the KX3 and battery can be
fused for short circuit protection. I use a Turnigy Accucell 6 for
external charging.

Re: [Elecraft] KXPA-100 & K2/15

2014-06-10 Thread Don Wilhelm

George,

The normal K2/10 does not have a KEYOUT jack - and that is the only problem.
There are 2 solutions - 1) If you have the K60XV option installed, all
you need is a jack (and a hole to mount it) and a bit of wire. K60XV J2
pin 2 will produce a KEYOUT signal.
2) If you do not have the K60XV, a KEYOUT circuit can be built. Look at
Tom Hammond (SK) N0SS' website being maintained by the Mid-Misouri ARC
for the circuit http://www.mmccs.com/mmarc/n0ss/k2_t-r_rly_drvr.pdf. No
boards are available, but the circuit is easy to duplicate on perfboard
- just follow Tom's layout and connect the leads in the right places.

Clay,

The screen size on the PX3 is the same as the P3 - it uses the same part
(I got that info from the designer).
It does "look" smaller at first glance, but I believe that is because of
the smaller enclosure frame around it.

The P3SVGA is a planned option, but yes, it would be built-in. No prediction on

Re: [Elecraft] RemoteRig and KPA-500

2014-06-10 Thread Rick Tavan N6XI
I use a 15 pin D-sub "Y" connector off the back of the K3 ACC connector to
connect both the RemoteRig RRC and the KPA500. Be careful to use a
connector that passes through all 15 pins - many do not. (And I use another
Y to feed band data from ACC to my antenna and filter switching network. It
gets crowded back there in the rats' nest but it all works.)

If you have Pin 8 of KPA500 AUX working for remote turn-on when the K3
comes on, it should continue to work when the RRC turns on the K3 but I
can't confirm that because I don't use it here. Instead, I use KPA500
Remote client-server apps (available on the Elecraft Web site) to turn the
KPA500 on and off manually.

I highly recommend using KPA500 Remote with a server computer at the Remote
site, rather than simply trusting that KPA500 operation will be
satisfactory! I bought a surplus, commercial-grade, Win XP machine for
$200. In its limited roles, it has run flawlessly. If a Remote site server
is out of the question, consider a remote serial port there so you can run
KPA500 Remote software at the Control site only. IMHO, it's not prudent to
run high power "in the dark."

GL with your integration project. It requires some patience but is well
worth the effort.

[Elecraft] KAT500 1.67 Firmware Causing sporadic re-tuning

2014-06-10 Thread Brian F. Wruble
Hi All:

I had been having a sporadic re-tuning problem on one of my two 80m dipoles
using the previous firmware version. I had understood that the new version
1.67 was supposed to take care of that. It seems to have made everything
much worse.

On pretty much all bands, using a variety of antennas, the KAT500 seems to
start re-tuning after everything was perfectly well tuned. It happens in
the middle of transmissions.

Any idea what is going on here?

[Elecraft] K3 case

2014-06-10 Thread Richard
Dick,
I use a case from Harbor Freight: Item #69315
They are about 20-$25 depending on whether you have a 20 or 25% coupon or not.
Comes with adjustable dividers and removable inside lid storage.
I use a foam sheet between the lid and radio.
It fits my K3 nicely, leaves room for the mike and power cable.
I use the cases for other radio stuff, organized by default.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 1.67 Firmware Causing sporadic re-tuning

2014-06-10 Thread Don Wilhelm

Brian,

Does that happen with SSB, or any mode?
If SSB only, I suggest that you 'train' you KAT500 on the antenna, and
then put it into MAN mode.

The new firmware should have made the occurrences of false SWR detection
less frequent, but the varying pattern of SSB creates situations where
when the forward power is sampled, the speech power is low, and when the
reverse power is sampled, the speech power is high - when then computed
for SWR, that will result in a higher than actual SWR - in Auto mode,
the KAT500 will then begin a TUNE cycle.
Since the tuner 'training' is done with a constant signal level, it will
be correct (for that antenna and band segment), so taking it out of AUTO
mode will keep those LC settings constant and it should not re-tune.

If you are having that problem in CW or DATA modes, contact support for
further assistance.

The PX3 uses exactly the same LCD as the P3. Same size. No wonder it

The P3SVGA is a planned option, but yes, it would be built-in. No prediction

Re: [Elecraft] [KX3] Seapac Options

2014-06-10 Thread Steve
Jim,
Let me add a couple of other PX3 observations from the Dayton Hamvention:
- USB port on the side for a keyboard - for digital mode support
- The device will act like a terminal for digital modes (although I did not see
it run in this manner)
- I thought display brightness was fully adequate, but perhaps not for sunlight
- Full KX3 integration: shift a signal into the center of the PX3 display and
the KX3 would QSY seamlessly, etc.

Re: [Elecraft] RemoteRig and KPA-500

2014-06-10 Thread Jack Brindle
It is not a good idea to connect pin 8 of the K3’s AUX IO connector to pin 8 of
the KPA500’s AuxBus connector. The two aren’t compatible. While both need to be
pulled low to power on the device, the K3’s pin stays low, while the KPA needs
for its pin to go high since it is in parallel with the front panel power-on
button. They both can be used for power-on, but different logic is needed for
each.

I believe the K3 KPA AUX cable has this pin cut for this very reason. We
recumbent use of the serial power-on ‘P’ command for remote operation.

[Elecraft] Using a P3 for setting TX EQ

2014-06-10 Thread Bill Frantz
Following the advice in the manual, I was using my K3 to monitor
the audio while I set the TX EQ in my new KX3. I had the KX3 at
5 watts into a dummy load and was receiving a strong signal
through the outside 20M wire beam. I discovered I could use the
P3 display of the signal to make sure I was getting power in the
speech frequencies most responsible for intelligibility. It was
quite useful when combined with listening to the audio. The
result is also getting good on-air audio reports.

Perhaps the confusion is based on the fact that the USB connector, which
