Re: [Elecraft] KAT-500 Power Rating in Bypass

2018-01-25 Thread Jim Brown

Hi Mike,

I have a pair of KAT500's in my SO2R station. They're currently fed by a
pair of 87As, and before that, a pair of TenTec Titans. Both are legal
limit amps using the same tubes. My antennas are all close enough to
resonance that I can use the tuners in bypass mode and use the
amplifier's output network to keep the tubes happy.  I have an LP100A
inline with both amps, and, for legal limit contests, I keep the power
right there. The KAT500s are happy with that arrangement. They were NOT
happy in Man mode above about 1 kW, and the level at which they got
unhappy was reduced increased mismatch.

[Elecraft] KAT-500 Power Rating in Bypass

2018-01-25 Thread Michael Tope

From the KAT-500 owners manual the power ratings are as follows:

3—30 MHz 600W into 5 Ω to 500 Ω (10:1 SWR).
     1000W into 16 Ω to 150 Ω (3:1 SWR).

1.8-2.0 MHz 600 W into 10 Ω to 500 Ω (5:1 Low Impedance, 10:1 High
Impedance SWR).

Does anyone know what the power rating is for 160 meters when the tuner
is in bypass mode?

I would like to put my Alpha 87A in front of the KAT-500 and run the
KAT-500 in bypass mode on 160 meters at 1500 watts, and then at reduced
power on the other bands where I am actually using the tuner to match
the antenna. This is for a remote setup, so it is not convenient to
physically take the tuner out of amplifier's output path on 160 meters.

Thanks,

Mike W4EF...

If you have the ATU, it can be fooled into thinking you have a

[Elecraft] Y-BOX v1.3 Closeout Pricing; New Y-BOX v2.1 Now In Stock

2018-01-25 Thread Bob Wilson, N6TV
To review, the Y-BOX provides a reliable and convenient way to connect the
K3 ACC port to multiple devices, including the KAT500, KPA500, KPA1500,
band decoders, DigiKeyers, RemoteRig boxes, etc. The Y-BOX replaces any
15-pin Y-Cables you may already be using.

While supplies last (I only have a few left), the original "Version 1.3"
Y-BOX will be sold for only $129 ea. (originally $139). Order this version
if you don't have a SteppIR controller, or don't have a requirement to
power a KPA500 or KPA1500 on or off remotely. Version 1.3 requires an
Elecraft KPAK3AUX cable (not supplied) for connecting the Y-BOX to an
Elecraft amplifier or tuner.

For the eham.net reviews, please see
https://www.eham.net/reviews/detail/13296

The new "Version 2.1" Y-BOX dedicates one connector for a KAT500, KPA500,
or KPA1500, with no KPAK3AUX cable required. Simply connect an economical
15-pin M/F cable (but not a VGA cable) between the Y-BOX v2.1 "AMP AUX"
port and your Elecraft device. The Y-BOX will connect only the required
lines, emulating the wiring of the KPAK3AUX cable.

Version 2.1 also adds two new internal headers. The first is optionally
used to open the keying line to the amplifier, providing convenient RCA
connectors for SteppIR owners with a SteppIR Tuning Relay (a device which
opens the keying line whenever the antenna is tuning).

The second header optionally connects the DIGOUT1 line of the K3 to the
Elecraft amplifier's PWR ON pin, so you can remotely power the amp. ON or
OFF with a simple K3 macro, or your K3 logging software. This technique is
documented in the K3 Remote Owner's Manual
,
on page 21. With the Y-BOX version 2.1 and a 15-pin M/F DE-15 cable, no K3
to KPA500 cable modification is required; the required connection is made
inside the Y-BOX.

Version 2.1 is now available to order, priced at $139 ea. Here's a direct
link to the order form:

https://goo.gl/forms/Guu6OC6NinTlasY93

For more details and photos, please see https://bit.ly/Y-BOX (freshly
updated to show what's new in version 2.1).

Thanks again for all your support and encouragement.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA1500 ATU - ability to handle more than two antennas

2018-01-25 Thread K9MA
I'm concerned about the same issue:  Multiple antennas on one band. I
have an automated antenna selection system.  In addition to following
the band data from the transceiver, there are switches to select
antennas.  I frequently have to very quickly switch antennas, so it must
involve only a single switch.  Using a mouse with the computer is
nowhere near fast enough and I really don't want to make it dependent on
the computer, anyhway.  However, my antennas have different impedances,
so require different ATU settings.  So, how can I tie the KPA1500 ATU
into my antenna control switch so it automatically switches settings?
All the antenna switching is external to the amp, so only a single amp
output is used.  The ideal would be a control line to the amp,
controlled by the same switch that selects antennas, which would select
ATU settings.  I really don't want to make it dependent on the
computer.  I expect others have the same issue.  Can the KPA1500 be made
to do something like this?

I just built my KPA500 today and on the air reports were good. 20watts Drive
seemed right for about 500 watt peaks. After running it for about an hour I
shut down to clean up the kit building mess and when I returned later I was
hearing a loud 60 cycle mechanical buzz from the left side of the cabinet
when in operation. The buzz would vary from very light when keyed with no
drive to quite loud when putting out 500 watts CW. I had not noticed any
noise earlier but I was wearing Bose noise cancelling headphones as I
normally do.

The voltage looks normal under load and the output power is 500 watts with a
little over 20 watts drive.

I removed the top cover, loosened the transformer mounting bolt a bit,
turned it up on its left side to make sure the transformer was resting
against the two bumpers and retightened the mounting screw per the
instructions. This did not result in any change in the mechanical
vibration.

Any suggestions?

Re: [Elecraft] KPA1500 ATU - ability to handle more than two antennas

2018-01-25 Thread Ignacy
Multiple (4 to 6) antenna connectors is a nice feature of Expert amps. Once
you have antenna matched, QSY to up to 2-3 antennas per band is automatic.
The psychological effect is astounding, as trying to get SWR as close to 1:1
is becoming a waste of time. In my Expert 2k-fa I have 5 antennas connected.

Having two antenna connectors is probably enough for heavy duty contesters
where sophisticated antenna selection together with SO2R is done
externally.

However, Elecraft can provide several logical antennas software selected,
with each one matched separately. They can also come with an external
switch.

Only 2 connectors is a reason why I am not placing the order for KPA1500.

[Elecraft] KPA1500 ATU - ability to handle more than two antennas

While I'm awaiting the delivery of my KPA1500 I'm wondering if/how the amp's
ATU can accommodate more than two antennas. For example, if I have an
antenna switch connected to one of the amp's antenna jacks is there a
facility on the amp that would allow me to choose one of two /logical/
antennas beyond the ANT1 / ANT2 physical selection? Having two sets of
memories per band per physical port would accommodate 4 antennas.

Does the KPA1500 support this or something similar to allow for more than
two antennas? If not, this seems pretty simple to implement as a firmware
change - assuming there's enough memory available. If memory is a
constraint I suppose you could provide the option to halve the number of
tuning solutions stored per segment to keep the memory footprint the same.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA1500 ATU - ability to handle more than two antennas

2018-01-25 Thread Wayne Burdick
Dan,

The KPA1500’s firmware is written to accommodate many more antennas. It would
be a fairly simple matter to externalize a number of them in the form of a
remote-controlled antenna switch.

This is a good example of how the amp can be tailored to user needs. The
firmware could be updated to support an external switch, patch it into the
normal antenna selection process (i.e. ATU retuning, ANT switch control),
display its number or noun name on the LCD, etc. We even have two
user-programmable switches (PF1 and PF2) that could be used as hot-keys to
select specific antennas, rigs, or other configurations.

As unique station needs arise, we’ll try to address them in a timely fashion.
To that end, feel free to recommend specific third-party antenna switches that
we could test. We’ll work with the manufacturers to ensure smooth operation.

[Elecraft] Parts available for Elecraft K1 / K2 / K3

2018-01-25 Thread Doug Hensley
K1 & K2 owners, I have for sale excess to my needs now:

(1) for the K1/K2 transceivers:

the K6XX CW Indicator with False Blink kit, LED Button Option & header
connect/disconnect option. These work well on the K1 and fairly well on the
K2. NOTE: the kit requires soldering of SMD components prior to installation
of the header. Don Wilhelm installed mine and did a great job.

$39.95 plus $4.5 USPS.

(2) for the K2, the Rework Eliminator kit to ease the task of changing
microphone types. Same price.

I also have a spare color decal showing the mic positions for the Rework
Eliminator. If you have the old black & white or your's is peeling, these are
great. $1 plus a USPS first class mail stamp.

For the K3 and K3s I still have:

two 2.7 kHZ 5-Pole filters(make an offer)

Either one or both filters are $9.95 shipping which comes with tracking &
insurance, 2-3 Day USPS Priority Mail.

Cheers,

Doug W5JV

Check for loose connections. Seems that there is a increase in resistance after
prolong use.

I checked it at the time. 13.3 Vdc  reported by the K3 meters. It seems solid
(big Astron RS-50M) , and likely did not drop while operating.

This first thing I would do is check the voltage at the radio. There is a
voltmeter in my K3S so there probably is one in the K3.  You could have a power
supply issue or just low voltage in Curacao. I try to maintain 13.5V on  TX.

I was running some stations on 160-meters this morning, and noted that the
power output had dropped from the amp.

Further investigation found that the maximum power out from the K3/100 was
reduced from ~100W to about 54W, with no error messages displayed on the K3.
Advancing the 'PWR' control beyond 54 W made no difference. I stopped
operating, and found that the power slowly restored, first to a maximum of 84W,
and then back to the normal 100W maximum.

I assume that this is an issue with temperature? The ambient temperature was
cool (A/C running in shack). I have not noted this problem before.

The fan was set to 'Config > KPA3 > PA nor'.  recommended setting for hard
contest use?
