[Elecraft] KAT500/KPA500 - Sanity Check Please

2019-01-25 Thread Kevin der Kinderen
I'm reading the specifications for the KAT500. Typical matching range from
3-30 MHz is 10:1 SWR for 600 watts.

This means that if the KAT500 utility reports "Bypass VSWR" in excess of
10:1 then the KPA500 should not be set to operate.

I'm running a dipole cut for 80 and fed with 600 ohm ladder line as a
multiband antenna. The BALUN is right outside my window. I have the option
of 1:1, 4:1, 9:1 and 12:1 I think. They are DXE brand. My job then is to
pick the right BALUN to provide <10:1 SWR on the bands of interest. I hoped
this would be at least 80-20 if not 80-10.

Not sure which BALUN is plugged in right now but on 80 meters I'm showing a
bypass VSWR of 12.00 and VSWR of 1.6:1. This means I cannot use the KPA500
on 80 regardless of the good match the KAT500 provided.

Should the key line cables from the KAT500 to the KPA500 and the rig (using
a Flex) prevent keying the amp if the SWR exceeds 10:1 automatically?

If I want better than that then I have to find another antenna tuner with a
wider SWR range at 600 watts or a different antenna?

Can anyone guess at the matching range of the KAT500 at 100W?

The thing is... I think I have a dead amp.

Re: [Elecraft] Auto spot

2019-01-25 Thread Bob Wilson, N6TV
Auto spot is fine for rag-chewing, or in contests when there is no pileup,
but it's *not* always best to use when calling in a small pileup. It's
better to call slightly off frequency from everyone else, so use the XIT to
move up or down 100 Hz.

If the DX is working with a wide split, put the *SubReceiver* on the DX
frequency, and use MAIN to set your transmit frequency. No need to press
the SPLIT button any more. Just tap A=B, turn on the SUB, and move VFO A
up to the calling frequency.

Why do it that way?

   1. Enabling the SUB gives you an important audio clue that you are in
"Split" mode (even though SPLIT is OFF). If you use SPLIT in the
conventional way, all you get is a visual clue that you're transmitting on
B instead of A. Using the "SUB" technique with SPLIT OFF, you're always
transmitting on A, like you're used to, so it's less stress on the brain.
   2. The VFO A knob is bigger, so it's easier to move quickly through a
large pileup to figure where the DX is listening. Using the P3 scope helps
find clear spots in the pileup too. Clear spots are good places to call.
This assumes the P3 is in Fixed Mode, not Center.
   3. No need to remember to turn SPLIT off when you are done. Leaving
SPLIT OFF makes it much harder to transmit someplace where you are not
listening. It's easy to remember to turn SUB off, because you can HEAR it.
   4. Since the SUB has to be is ON, you are always listening to both sides
pileup when in split (pileup in left ear, DX in right.ear). You can make
the DX much louder than the pileup, which may be helpful. Try setting
CONFIG:SUB AF to BALANCE so you only have to adjust one gain knob instead
   of two.
   5. If you use SPLIT, CW QRQ mode is immediately disabled, so your CW can
get very choppy (above 37 WPM). Enabling only the SUB, leaving SPLIT OFF,
lets CW QRQ mode remain enabled.

If you really need to use both ears and lots of audio filtering and noise
reduction to hear a weak DX station that is working split, then it may be
better to use SPLIT mode in the conventional way, listening on MAIN,
transmitting on B, than trying to use the SUB. Same if you need to use
Diversity + SPLIT. Otherwise, using the SUB instead of SPLIT has
advantages.

Re: [Elecraft] Latest Elecraft NEWS

2019-01-25 Thread Fred Jensen
"Nerd Girls" was an oxymoron when I was in high school.  At a drive-in
movie in the family car, and not yet having made "The move" to the back
seat, she pointed to the Gonset converter on the steering column and
asked, "What's that?"  I said, in my most professional voice, "That's
part of the two-way radio, here is the microphone for the transmitter in
the trunk" and then pressed PTT, the PE-103 spun up and I identified.
She seemed satisfied.  Alas, the corona ball on the top of the 8' whip
had come off, the TX created a lively electrical display from the pointy
end, the manager showed up at the car, and "The move" never happened
that night.

I could then answer stations on their frequency rather than use crystals. Major

Ummm ... in the general case, it transmitted and received so it
technically was a "transceiver" just as the Gonset Communicator's were
"transceivers."  Newer folk likely think "transceiver" means "one knob."

Weren't all the Heath "Hot Waters" both TX and RX?

Re: [Elecraft] Latest Elecraft NEWS

2019-01-25 Thread Jack Brindle via Elecraft
My friend Don has a slightly faulty memory. The DX-60B (which I still have) was
just a transmitter, no rx. It worked well with the SB-303. The HW-16 did indeed
have a receiver which was definitely tunable. Both needed the HG-10 VFO to get
away from being rock-bound.

Perhaps it was the nerd girls who started paying attention?

Jan,

The HW-16 was a crystal controlled transmitter only - no receive capability.

Yes, there was a time when transceivers did not exist, and many
transmitters did not come with a VFO. Many VFOs were external to the

Re: [Elecraft] (KX3/2) Backpack loop thread

2019-01-25 Thread Fred Jensen
Hmmm ... I use an Alexloop with my K2.  Since the real part of the feed
point impedance of a single-turn small mag loop is so low, one design
goal is to reduce the resistance of the the loop parts ... larger
conductor, butterfly capacitors with no moving connection, etc.  Do the
multiple turns increase the radiation efficiency enough to outweigh the
increased I squared R loss of the longer conductor?

Ignoring that loss for a moment, what is the effect of multiple turns?
Do multiple turns affect the bandwidth?  Just curious, small effective
antennas are of interest now that I've moved from a 5 acre "farm" in
Auburn CA to a suburban house/lot in Sparks NV [with a somewhat
benevolent and benign HOA].

Thanks, guys, I misspoke. I was thinking of the old multiplicative
CW-only designs that have been floating around, but of course, the
Elecraft ones don't do that. My bad.

Yes, it would be nice to sync the Elecraft transverters to a 10 MHz
signal.

Which ones do you guys have that have a PLL-locked 10 MHz ref in?

Don, I do have the TCXO-3 and also the XREF in my K3S. It works very
nice with my Leo Bodnar GPS 10 MHz frequency source.

Re: [Elecraft] LP-100 software

2019-01-25 Thread Martin Sole
I use the free version of VSPE (Virtual Serial Ports Emulator). Use the
TCP Server and TCP Client. You don't need to specify the Interface IP in
the server setup. Just point the TCP Client tothe IP address of the
machine running the TCP server and make sure the port is the same on both.

If you have any firewalls operating between the machines you may need to
open the ports that you use in the TCP Client Server.

Works for me.

[Elecraft] K3 Bricked HELP!!

2019-01-25 Thread Bob DeHaney
Again thanks to all who replied. Mike Cizek WØVTT reminded me of the little
USB-USB/RS232 switch on the KIO3B to force a firmware load. This worked
immediately.

I posted my BAD on the PTT floor switch (head hanging, red

face) which caused the ERR PTT. Several guys pointed me in the right direction
to isolate and correct the ERR PTT.

As to the cause of the original problem with no reception on 14 and 24mHz, no
idea. It went away when I loaded a configuration file.

Boots, our new kitty, is innocent in this case and I apologized to him. Boots
has not apologized for bringing in a live mouse, chasing it behind the TV and
pulling the SAT antenna cable out.
