I have one of the custom machined VFO knobs from 73cnc. It is in perfect
condition and is one of the later versions. It is a real treat to spin and
very classy looking; a great way to "cusomize" your K3/K3S. While these
knobs are shown on the website
(http://www.dtsohio.com/73cnc/elecraft-k3-black.html), I'm not sure if they
are currently being produced and for sale. In any case, these knobs listed
at $105 plus shipping. I am selling my as-new know for $70 including
Priority Mail postage to any US ZIP code. Please contact me off list at

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 - KAT500 stopping K3 boot

2019-08-08 Thread Dick Dievendorff
KAT500 sleeping (12v supply connected, power button "off") is fine.

The problem occurs when the KAT500 has no 12V power; it pulls down the AUXBUS
pin.

K3 MCU firmware was changed to display a reminder if the AUXBUS is held low for
too long during startup.

From K3 firmware release notes:

MCU 4.93 / DSP 2.83, 10-16-2014

* KAT500 POWER-ON REMINDER ON K3 DISPLAY: If a powered-off KAT500 is pulling
the auxBus signal low when the K3 is first turned on, "TURN ON KAT500" is
displayed. Previously this condition would lock up the K3 without explanation

Is there an issue with the KPA500 being OFF with power up -> booting of the K3?
Does it need to be actually powered up, i.e. and in operational state? OR is
just having it in the “sleeping” state (REAR switch ON, FRONT PANEL SW-OFF) OK?

I know about KAT500 and AUX-BUSS stopping K3 bootup, and have an “automatic”
solution that works great.

Check your cables. It may be that you are using a straight-through cable with
the power pins connected between the K3 and the KPA. These two pins (pin 8 on
both sides) must not be connected.

[Elecraft] For Sale: K144XV 2-Meter Option for K3 or K3s

2019-08-08 Thread John Reilly
Recently bought a used K3s with the 2-meter option factory installed,
which I have no plans to use. According to Elecraft, this is compatible
with K3's above serial number 3000, and all K3s'. The K3s went to
Elecraft in Jul 19 and got a complete checkup, including the 2-meter
module. I tested it with a dummy load and it appears to work. This will
include all the parts I removed from the K3s, as well as a KFL3B-FM 13
KHz filter. The price has been adjusted a little lower in the event you
need to order some additional parts. PayPal preferred. $375, including
USPS shipping. John, N0TA

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 - KAT500 stopping K3 boot

2019-08-08 Thread Mark Musick
Ben,
You no longer have to worry about the KAT500 stopping the K3 power on. That was
fixed in a 4.xx firmware update eons ago. If you have a 5.xx firmware version
in your K3 you have nothing to worry about.
As far as I know there never was an issue with the KPA500. I never had any
issues with my KPA500 and after loading the updated firmware no issue with my
KAT500 either.

Thanks. I knew Allen Burdick, who died quite a few years ago. Bill
Whitlock and I still serve on the AES Standards Committee, and are
principal authors of AES Standards on EMC, and I've been Vice-Chair of
the EMC Working Group for about 15 years. The first draft of four of
those Standards started out with Neil Muncy and me around my kitchen
table. Bill and I have taught EMC workshops together. Bill is far more
than Deane's protege -- a fine engineer in own right. Deane was a fine
engineer, and published some important work before he died.  Bill, Neil
Muncy, and I were elected Fellows of the AES, partly on the basis of our
EMC work.

I retired about ten years ago from a career that started in broadcasting
and ended in pro audio. When Neil Muncy died, I was asked to take over
the EMC workshops that he had taught for many years at conventions for
sound contractors, and continued that until about four years ago. Slides
and a White Paper are on the pro audio section of that publications page.

In my setup, the power supplies for the KX3, Raspberry Pi and powered

the issue.

[Elecraft] Special BNC adapter/barrel

2019-08-08 Thread Charlie T

I have available, a small quantity of a very useful, but slightly different
BNC "T" connectors.
Just picture a normal BNC "T", but with the male end swapped with the one of
the female ends.

What makes this useful is that with the male end plugged into your K2/K3, a
right female points up for your loaded whip, AND the other female, straight
across from the radio's connector can have a BNC to two pole banana adapter
for easy connection of a counter-poise or ground wire.

I can supply these at $10, shipped anywhere is the US.

Re: [Elecraft] AX1 Loaded Whip Antenna - Elevation and

2019-08-08 Thread David Gilbert

Well, I actually have three reasons why I think the root of this
discussion has been misguided:

1.  Typical portable operation is for casual fun while camping or just
enjoying the outdoors.  Squeezing out every last dB doesn't quite fit
that scenario.

2.  If you are trying to squeeze out every last dB for whatever reason,
using an AX1 with 50 feet of coax and an extra tuner isn't the way to do
it.  There are better choices for the same size and weight budget.

3.  And if you are using the AX1 with its very high Q, there are lots of
other variables (length of counterpoise, terrain, height above ground,
proximity to other detuning influences, etc) that will have far more
impact on transmitted signal strength than a couple of extra dB loss due
to SWR on the coax.  Wayne made pretty much the same comment in the
context of SWR, but the same holds for signal strength.

Use whatever you want.  It makes no difference to me other than the
misconceptions that come with it.  I've done a LOT of portable operation
over the years, and my first priority has always been to put up the best
antenna I could within whatever constraints I had at the time.  I don't
own an AX1 but it appears to be a fine antenna for its intended purpose,
which was essentially a backpacker antenna usable even for pedestrian
mobile.   However, if I was on a camping trip (tent, cooler, etc) and
wanted to get out better, I can think of better options.  I do own a KX2
and I use it with a homebrew 20m vertical that I can easily carry in one
hand for miles (five 4' sections of lightweight tubing, one of which is
for elevating the radials) and set up in fewer minutes than I have fingers.

Hmmm! I don't quite understand that statement. Why would you worry about
every dB at your home station but not necessarily be concerned on a portable

get the best antenna possible as opposed to a lesser one. Well, that's
ideally true, but "you do with what you got"! Whatever antenna you might
have for portable use, you want to squeeze every dB you can out of it! I
tend to think it could be even more important when operating portable since
you already apt to be weaker, and that last dB may be the one that gets you
heard! Home station operators might actually ignore such issues since they
may already be more than loud enough to be heard. QRP/portable operators
tend to not have that luxury.

Doesn't much matter.? You're still talking a 3 dB difference at most (50

feet vs 30 feet), and while I will be the first to argue the benefit of

every single dB for normal station operation (see

http://www.ab7e.com/weak_signal/mdd.html), I don't understand the angxt

over that 3 dB for portable operation.? If that's actually a concern,

bring a better antenna.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 and JS8CALL

2019-08-08 Thread Michael Arnold
Jim,

Excellent and comprehensive info on your website! Everyone should take a look
at it.

In my setup, the power supplies for the KX3, Raspberry Pi and powered speakers
are the typical 2-wire, no ground, switching supply in a plastic case, so
ground potential is established through the audio interconnect. The rig and
computer connect only through the USB ports for the USB serial adapter and the
USB audio interface. After a little experimentation, I realized The “hum” I was
hearing was RF getting into the powered speakers on transmit with the antenna I
close proximity to the KX3. Moving the antenna away from the rig resolved the
issue.

This is a little off-topic, but may be of interest to the audio geeks on the
list...
I worked in TV engineering here in Nashville for many years, and we dealt with
a lot of music recorded in big studios, and thus long cable runs and a lot of
channels of audio. It was all analog in the early days and several audio
engineering luminaries helped me immensely. One was Allen Burdick of Benchmark
Media Systems. His “Clean Audio Installation Guide” is still indispensable:

Deane Jensen of Jensen Transformers fame and his protégé, Bill Whitlock, were
two others:
https://www.jhbrandt.net/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/Design_of_High-Performance_Balanced_Audio_Interfaces.pdf

And a local genius, Dave Harrison, who designed an built the legendary Harrison
Consoles that we used extensively:

Power line hum and buzz can be prevented by 1) getting power for all
interconnected equipment from the same AC outlet, or from outlets whose
Green Wires are bonded together, AND 2) bonding from chassis to chassis
of all interconnected equipment, AND 3) proper bonding of all grounds in
the home, including ground from that interconnected equipment in the
shack. All three are necessary. There's a tutorial on this at
k9yc.com/publish.htm

[Elecraft] KXPD3 for sale

2019-08-08 Thread Jim Leder
I could never get used to the KX3 KXPD3 paddle, so I bought an AME Porta Paddle
(much better for me). I am offering my KXPD3 for sale, complete with original
data sheet, both hex wrenches, and the 2 extra springs (firm is installed). All
is in the original zip bag. The wire mod has been installed (errant dit issue).
It’s a good little paddle, just not for me.

Sent to you for $85. Paypal ok.

Interested? Email me.

Thanks and 73…

I suspect that Wayne and Eric would take a big exception to the use of the
Elecraft name in their obvious knock-off product.

2019-08-08 Thread w7aqk
Dave And All,

Hmmm! I don't quite understand that statement. Why would you worry about
every dB at your home station but not necessarily be concerned on a portable
setup??? I guess maybe you are saying that, when operating portable, just
get the best antenna possible as opposed to a lesser one. Well, that's
ideally true, but "you do with what you got"! Whatever antenna you might
have for portable use, you want to squeeze every dB you can out of it! I

[Elecraft] Questions for Remote operation with the K4

2019-08-08 Thread tobestep .
Hi Wayne:
will I be able to totally eliminate the use of the RemoteRig boxes with the
K4 when operating remotely? Will I need specific software for remote
operation for win10 PCs? Will I be able to control and monitor the KPA1500
directly through the K4?
