Re: [Elecraft] This does not bode well for the chip users of the world

2021-04-30 Thread SteveL
Great laugh out of this, thank you!
And so true… JIT depends on so many things working, which are not now for
myriads of reasons.

I could barely wrap my brain around 20,000 containers on a single boat, wedged
across the Suez no less - and blocking how many more?! In some ways it reveals
how strategic some mundane things are - like shipping containers or a boat - in
the economy of the world. Kind of scary, really.

It highlights both the magic and the simplicity of HF radio we use: a K1 or
KX1 or Tuna Tin II..., a battery, a switch, and a wire in a local tree and
we’re on the air around the world. To hear a signal reach me directly from
half way around the world is truly magic.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Chirp

2021-04-30 Thread Dana Roode K6NR
Let me give this another try. Anyone out there ever have an issue with a
CW Chirp from a K3? Mine seems to be intermittent, it's not always
present. I've got a spare K3, I guess I will drive out to the station and
swap out the one there now. If it's not the power supply, the only other
thing I can think of is an issue with the KSYN3 board. I can try the
calibration Wayne mentioned in his 2017 post.

Is This A K4 Problem??

THIS was on the FSARC email server today...

"From Steve Waterman, the WL2K guru, that fully software-defined radios,
like Flex, have had handshaking timing issues with VARA, and with SCS
Pactor modems.

Flex and SCS have firmware upgrades to improve handshaking speed when
using Pactor.

Improvements to the VARA software are imminent, if not already released. "

I don't have problems with my KX3 (zero delay), why would the K4, just

I have one. I like it, but I was thinking more of a test unit.
Dummy load with integral digital meter (digits preferred instead of LEDs)..
To make one out of a W2 would require a W2, that after market KV5J digital
readout or a computer, and the directional coupler. Lots of stuff and wires.
But maybe if I found a stand alone digital wattmeter I could fasten it to a
dummy load...that's a thought.

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] RTTY Questions

2021-04-30 Thread Wes
Are you using an external RTTY program, e.g. MMTTY?  If not and you're using the
internal CW to RTTY feature, I can't help you.  Otherwise I'm assuming audio
input via Line In.  Baud rate is set in the program.

Make sure the audio drive, set by 1) soundcard level and 2) "Mic" gain, drive
the ALC indicator to four bars.  Less and the power control loop will try to
adjust, but it does this slowly. Otherwise it could be a blown final, in either
of the PAs (regrettably too common) or a mistuned BPF.  I don't know how common
this is but it happened to mine.

2021-04-30 Thread richard gilley
Hi,
Thank you Dick K6KR, and Skip NC90 for your help. I ended up doing a
factory default, enabled the ant per band and all is well.
One question: After setting the configuration, saving, shutting down, and
powering up I found in checking "edit configuration" ant 1 and 3 were no
longer enabled. However, all worked as expected. Should the latest
configuration show the antennas enabled? Perhaps not?

Thank you again, saving me a ship to CA.

It may not be related to your problem but there is a documented issue with

Re: [Elecraft] K4 interface to KPA-1500

2021-04-30 Thread Bob Wilson, N6TV
With a KPA500, just set RADIO to K3, and this works fine with the K4. No
KPA500 firmware update is needed.

The K4 recognizes the difference between the KPA1500 and KPA500 by the
AUXBUS messages it receives, so it changes popup messages such as "KPA500
Status: operate" and "KPA500 Status: standby" to "KPA1500 Status: ..."
automatically.

I use a Telepost LP100A with the sensor connected to a Bird dummy load.

I have a dual-probe LP100A inline with the power amp outs in my SO2R
station. It auto-switches to the active TX. I have a kW dummy load
sitting under the operating desk, but it's not part of antenna
switching, and I haven't used it in years.
