Re: [Elecraft] My appeal for help regarding my KXPA100 Failure to Turn on and Stay On

2021-08-13 Thread Carter Craigie
My thanks to the three fine Elecrafters who sent me suggestions to fix my
KXPA100 amplifier. I tried their suggestions, but no joy.

The problem I have?
After months of fine operation in my garage “Summer Station” I moved my
whole station inside where the air conditioning is. Out in the garage was
just too darn hot!
Well, I guess “something” changed when I reassembled my KX3 and my PX3 and
the KXPA100, as the Amp slowly started putting out fewer and fewer Watts;
finally, it “gave up the ghost” and declined to turn on again, after about
a ten-second flashing of LEDs.
So…
Anyone with more suggestions to get it back to its original state of
putting out up to and including 100 Watts?
Or,
Do I need to send it in for repairs? And, if that is the case, how do I
proceed, please?

Have you perused the Elecraft web site? At the top in the black band on the
right there is a “hamburger” (3 horizontal lines.) If you click there and
select “Support” you will see well thought out and well laid out procedures for
asking for help from Elecraft and if the worst should happen, procedures to
effect a return of your amp for repair.

Re: [Elecraft] Help Needed for KPA100 Amplifier

2021-08-13 Thread Dick Dievendorff
Carter: this may be a serial communications problem between the KX3 and
KXPA100. Just as a diagnostic step, try turning the amp on with its power
slide switch. It should stay on.

To avoid needing to use that slide switch all the time, there is a serial
command sent periodically from the KX3 to the amp telling it to switch on.
That command must be repeatedly received to keep the amp on. If your serial
cable is intermittent (not fully seated?) all the KX3 messages may not be
arriving at the amp, and the amp turns itself off after a period of silence
from the KX3. Another serial cable might also be helpful.

Good luck!

[Elecraft] A new release of Win4K3Suite is available

2021-08-13 Thread Tom
Hello,
There is a new version of Win4K3Suite available. This release has some
fixes for wrong spectral offsets when used with an SDRPlay.
Win4K3Suite is a full featured control program for the K3/S, KX3 and KX2.
It has a built in Panadapter that works with LPPAN and a sound card, as well
as the SDRPlay RSP's. It supports the KAT500, KPA500/1500 and the KXPA100 on
most of the above radios.
A unique feature is that is has 6 built in Virtual Radios, each of which
works just like an Elecraft radio. This allows sharing of a single COM port
with up to 6 applications. This feature is fully managed and you will not
have conflicts with other applications. It also has a built in HRDLogbook
server and the EiBi Shortwave database.
There are many more features like full access to menu items, a cluster
display using your ClubLog credentials and many more.
You see more information here:
https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=win4k3suite
and download a fully functional 30 day trial at va2fsq.com

Contact Elecraft directly and send a copy of your MARS license. I did MARS
for several years and never had a problem getting the mod apps for Elecraft
gear. They even used my feedback on the frequency ranges to ensure that the
radios were usable on the necessary frequencies.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 Power Level

2021-08-13 Thread Don Wilhelm

Aaron,

I cannot give you a specific answer, but go by the heat.
I would suggest you first try 5 watts, and operate at that level for a
while (I suggest 10 minutes).
Then check the heatsink temperature - if you can hold your fingers on it
for longer than 5 minutes, then all is well.

Increase the power by about 3 watts and try again.
When the heat gets too much to comfortably hold your fingers on the
heatsink (next to the PA transistors), then you have exceeded the
maximum power which you should use for transmit.

The generalized answer is that you should consider those modes as
continuous duty and use 1/2 the normal full power output, but I suggest
doing the test I referred to as a specific power limit for your
particular K2.

virtually all contest loggers provide the controls needed for

[Elecraft] KX3 ALC indicator issue

2021-08-13 Thread David Herring
So I have been researching this most of the afternoon to no avail. I have a KX3
that when in Data A mode, does not indicate ALC on the ALC display.

I am using WSJT-X to generate an audio signal from the PC. When I do so, I can
see that the KX3 is putting out RF, and in fact I can make contacts on FT8 with
no problem. But it does not seem to matter where I set the PC sound card
volume, WSJT-X's audio level or the KX3’s mic gain, I do not ever see ALC bars.
In fact, I can max them out and still not get ALC to show.

And yet, I plug in an MH3 (and turn on bias), and I can get ALC indication with
my voice just fine with mic gain at 30 to 40.

What am I missing?

Thanks in advance.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 ALC indicator issue

2021-08-13 Thread AL7CR
When the input signal is too high no ALC is shown in data mode. Reduce the
input to a minimum and gradually increase the KX3 gain and the ALC will appear.
You would think that high input would show max ALC bars but that is not how it
works. Same problem took me several hours to troubleshoot on my KX3.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 control software?

2021-08-13 Thread Dave Fugleberg
I use a variety of things depending on what I want to do. I often run
Win4k3 connected to the radio, and then other software like N1MM, DxLab,
etc. connected to the 'virtual radios' of Win4K3 via virtual serial port
pairs. I have found this a reliable way to allow multiple programs to each
'think' they are directly controlling the K3, while they are all being kept
in sync. In other words, changing frequency. mode, etc on the radio or in
one of the connected programs causes it to change everywhere.

Other times I just run N1MM or DxLab Commander connected directly to the
K3. Or I'll connect N1MM to the K3, and then run WSJT-X from within N1MM,
so it logs directly into N1MM.

All depends on what you're trying to accomplish. If you can articulate what
your goals are, there are many here who can give you good advice on what to
use to get there!

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 ALC indicator issue

2021-08-13 Thread David Herring
Bingo!

That was it. I cranked the PC and app levels way down to like 30 percent,
dropped the mic gain to zero, and then started slowly increasing the mic gain
and then got ALC bars somewhere around the 15 to 20 level.

I guess in all my playing around with this, I must never have had the
combination of the three controls low enough at the same time.

Thanks for putting me on to this!

David - N5DCH
