[Elecraft] K3 strange overshoot

2022-02-11 Thread Bob McGraw
Although my configuration is a bit different,  K3S, P3, KPA500, and
KAT500, I see a small initial overshoot when changing bands. Drive power
for each band is different.  PWR SET is Per Band.  TUN PWR is set for 20
watts.   I have the amp configured to switch to STBY when changing
bands.  I manually put it into OPER after a band change. I attribute
the issue to be the ALC and power control system in the radio getting
its act together.  K3S firmware version is   uC 05.67.

Operationally, when changing bands, I hit TUNE to make sure all is well
with the switching and tuning.  Then place the amp in OPER as the band
change puts it in STBY.  This seems to negate the issue.

Hi folks,

so sorry to bother you over here.
I realized strange behavior of my trusty K3 (#778 fully upgraded, loaded,
latest synths installed)
When I tried to exciting KPA500 amp I suffered with strange overshoots during
first dots.

Symptoms:
- up to 12W from K3 all is ok, over 13W the full scale deflection on KPA500
appears on first dots
- after 1-2 dots power drops back to expected power based on exciting power
level
- the overshoot appears again after band changing or switching between OPER/STBY
- 160m-30m are heavily affected, 20m-10m behaves better and it can be driven up
to 18W but overshoot appears too (just slightly to about 600W on LED scale)

Conditions:
I realized that behavior into antennas with SWR all below 1:1.4 > no SWR
protection activated at all.
The same issue appears into dummy load.

I will be happy for any kind of ideas or hints where to start...:(
Many thanks in advance.

Re: [Elecraft] When is a Key Out not a Key Out

2022-02-11 Thread Nate Bargmann
So, "keying the mic" or "keying up a repeater" is not proper
terminology? I've long heard the phrase of "the radio keys the
amplifier", etc.

I need to go back to Novice class I guess...

And let me add that the sound track was also produced by 100% Elecraft. Thanks

Hi Elecraft list,

The California QSO Party created a Youtube video to highlight all of the
county expedition stations in CQP 2021.

Elecraft gear dominates in the video. Take a look at the "Notes" section
for each expedition and the accompanying pictures.

Video can be seen at:

After you click the Youtube video link, you can press the letter ' f ' to
view the video in full screen.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 strange overshoot

2022-02-11 Thread Mike Cizek WØVTT
Ahoj Petr,

I have a similar problem with my K3s. Drive power for the amp is 20 to 25w and
the power spike is always around 70w. Elecraft had the radio for three months
and claimed they could not reproduce the fault. I discovered later that it only
occured when I was in CW QRQ mode and that I could “force” the fault by either
exiting QRQ mode or changing to a narrower filter. I sent that info to
Elecraft, but they never replied. This happens on all bands except 6m.

Thinking it might be a firmware issue, I tried loading an older FW version but
have not been able to convince K3 Utility to do that.

With all due respect, this is Citizen's Band terminology, usually
encountered in the context of statements from the late, unlamented CB
power competitions, like "I keyed up my radio, and blew out his
receiver." We key our radios for CW - it is not a synonym for PTT.
It's kind of embarrassing to see it in messages about the very best
amateur radio gear available today.

Re: [Elecraft] When is a Key Out not a Key Out

2022-02-11 Thread Julia Tuttle
Pete,

That seems like a really snobby reason to dislike "key out", which is a
clear and common term for the connector that tells downstream components in
the signal path when the radio is transmitting. Our hobby will not implode
if one bit of vocabulary overlaps with CB.

In my mind: A key (or paddles), VOX, PTT, and CAT are all ways to key a
rig; "PTT out" would refer to only one of those. I'd know what it meant
from context, but it'd be less straightforward.

Julie

[Elecraft] [KPA1500] Odd power up behavior

2022-02-11 Thread Warren Merkel
I thought I'd mention this to the list as it took a while to sort out.
Fortunately, the resolution was simple.

When powering up the KPA1500 last week, it spit out some 50V power
supply faults and refused to start up.  In doing so, the amplifier panel
indicators did some nasty flash-dance flickering before shutting down.
I power cycled the main power switch on the back of the power supply,
but still experienced the 50V faults a few more times.   After a few
minutes of total power disconnection, the amplifier once again powered
up normally. Everything seemed normal.

However, I didn't notice until I first attempted to transmit, that it
wouldn't go into PTT.    After a lot of cable swapping and even a switch
to a KPA500, no cable faults were detected.  The KPA500 happily goes
into PTT, where swapping back to the KPA1500, the PTT issue resumed.

Yes, I restored the settings from a known-good saved configuration.
Still no joy.

However, on a whim, I reflashed the firmware using the utility. (Same
version - 2.58) and the issue vanished.  Apparently, the nasty power up
flash-n-flicker flipped a few bits in the amplifier's controller program
space.

And there you have it.

Warren, KD4Z

KPA1500 #143

Boot Block version 1.04

[Elecraft] K3 strange overshoot

2022-02-11 Thread Petr Ourednik
Hi folks,

so sorry to bother you over here.

[Elecraft] K4 Pricing

2022-02-11 Thread Dave Agsten
Does anyone recall or know what the K4D price was if you ordered back in May of
2019?

For those who have received their K4 on the East Coast, what was the shipping
cost for just a K4D?

I'm on the fence here as to whether or not I should invest in the K4. I'm also
considering the ATU but I already have the KAT500. I'm not getting any younger.
:-)

Tnx es 73,
