Re: [Elecraft] De-soldering Tool Recommendations?

2022-03-22 Thread jerry

All,

The discussion of desoldering tools inspired me to try something I've
seen on Amazon:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B094ZCRXMN

It's basically a solder sucker with a heated tip. $36, free Prime
shipping.
It arrived this morning, and I just tried it out. I dug out an old
video board and desoldered
a pin header. Worked *flawlessly*. The only real trick was to hold the
tip on the board a little
longer - to get that solder melted all the way down the hole. But
that's for any desoldering tool.

It cleaned out the holes very nicely, and did not mess up the lands or
traces.

Can anyone recommend a budget de-soldering iron that can be used in

Also need advice on the best soldering iron to use for this type of
work as well as the best low-temp Rosin core solder to use.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA 500

2022-03-22 Thread Wes
Although I have a K3 and a K3S, they are relegated to backup service to my
Kenwood TS-890.

A number of us Kenwood users also have KPA500 and KAT500s.  We are using mostly
home-built cables for interconnection.  If you don't have the KAT500 then RF
sensing is probably good enough.  The advantage to the cable when the KAT500 is
employed is that it can be preset to the band and tuning solution, when the
transceiver changes frequency, without transmitting.  This is particularly handy
when just listening.

Can I wire a standard 9 pin serial cable to the 3 pin connector on the

What is the pin out?

I've never used one. A tap on the mic or a dit is all that is needed.

Do you trust that RF sensing function? REALLY trust it? Because if you
transmit
into the wrong LPF, it can be Game Over for the PA transistors. I went
through
three sets of expensive LDMOS devices on my Medium Linear project before
I bit the bullet

and hooked up the band data from my FTDX10.

With the band data hooked up, the linear is always set to the correct
band. Even before

you transmit.

Great idea: did you use self-fluxing enamel wire? This is common on small
gauges used in signal circuits but not so common on large gauge wire used in
power transformers that I recall.
