[Elecraft] KX2: Transmit Power 10m Band

2022-04-28 Thread Michael Urspringer
Elecraft KX2:

If I set the transmit power to 10W on the 10m band, it seems that the
output power is 0W if I try to send. At least the RF power display does not
display anything. Same with 9.8W. If I set the value to 9.6W (or lower)
then everything is back to normal. This does only happen on 10m, all other
bands are fine with the 10W power setting. Is this a known bug or is
something wrong on my side?

Thanks,
Michael

[Elecraft] Sherwood Receiver Tests

2022-04-28 Thread Gary Gregory
Reading the Sherwood tests today I noticed the K4D tested ranked below the
K and K3s and I started to look at the data published and I am still a
little unsure of why it scores lower having assumed it would be
significantly better in performance over the K3 and K3s.

Perhaps somebody could point out to me if I am not seeing what is
important.

I believe in if I can hear them, I can work them but like most folk I like
a quiet noise floor and a comfy buffer of audio over noise.

My current thinking is hold onto my K3 until the K4 is improved as my
upgraded #679 has served me so well and is the only transceiver I have ever
loved and kept. It's not going anywhere soon hi hi.

Re: [Elecraft] Sherwood Receiver Tests

2022-04-28 Thread Fred Jensen

Can't speak to your current or future thinking Gary, but...

The K3 and K4 [and some other non-Elecraft radios too] are near the
physical limits for most of what we consider important today.  Not going
to get much better because of that, and who's at the top will depend for
some part on the quality of the test equipment, the quality of the
tester, and the roll of the dice. Cryogenic cooled front ends next?  The
odds of someone coming up with a dramatically, no fooling, real
advancement in ham receiver performance are lowish, at least in my
likely lifetime ... and, I live in Nevada and odds are an important part
of our state income. [;=)  For now, I've decided to keep my K2 and K3,
they seem to be about as good as it gets, and I know how to work them.

Rob has indicated that any of the top radios are fine.  Chose the radio
for the bells and whistles you want.  The difference between them is not
worth worrying about.    Pick the radio that you like to operate.

[Elecraft] Sherwood Receiver Tests

2022-04-28 Thread Richard Donner
Hi
I am no expert but as far as I can tell any of the top radios with
narrow dynamic range above 92 db would be fine in most environments. The
k4d was measured at 101.
A few years ago that dynamic range would have been considered fantastic.
I notice that the k3s is at 106. Who is going to notice that difference.
The ergonomics on the k4d is much better once you get used to it.
Everything you need to know while operating is plainly visible. For
example
I find I like having a real time UTC clock and date kept accurately
automatically. It is also nice to see the code speed and power levels
readily visible.
etc

The table is sorted on “Narrow Spaced Dynamic Range” which is only one measure
of “best”. To get a better understanding of the overall picture, read
through/view some of Rob’s presentations on his website. Very enlightening.

Re: [Elecraft] Sherwood Receiver Tests

2022-04-28 Thread Bill Frantz
From what I’ve heard about the K4D, its advantages over the K3 are in areas
that probably aren’t tested in Sherwood’s receiver tests. For example:

I have heard people say the RX audio is cleaner.
People say the UI is better.
There are more antenna input/output connections.
The voice compression just released gets rave reviews.
People like the noise reduction better.

There’s more to a radio than just the RX, although if the RX isn’t good, you
probably should look at another radio. (Or why I don’t use the Icom 706MII in
my car very often.)

Re: [Elecraft] Sherwood Receiver Tests

2022-04-28 Thread Wes

Gary,

There are many factors as important as the 2 kHz dynamic range that Rob sorts
his table on.  Even Rob has said many times, he has to sort on something so
that's the parameter.

I happen to own the first sample K3S that Rob tested.  I also own a TS-890 (and
a K3).  Rob tested an '890 but it wasn't mine.  He does use one though.  If you
compare the two radios based on almost any other parameter, the Kenwood "wins."
In fact the Kenwood is better in almost any other electrical aspect than any
other radio on the chart except for the 2 kHz DR, where there are eight "better"
radios.

Ergonomically there is no comparison, likewise the Kenwood has better audio and
reliability.  The K3S has much better noise blanking and reduction, less front
panel clutter with the mic and headphone jacks available on the rear panel.  I
favor the AFSK RTTY of the K3S over the FSK in the Kenwood, but pragmatically
speaking they are equal.  If you're dependent upon internal coding and decoding
of CW/RTTY/PSK then the larger display of the Kenwood is a winner.  Personally,
I think these things are gimmicks, a waste of the programmer's time and I don't
use them.

My radios sit side-by-side on the desk.  So which one do I use? The Kenwood.  I
suppose that a K4 will have features comparable to or even better than the
Kenwood but I could buy an '890 a year and a half ago and I still can't buy a K4.
