Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Question on S-Meter Calibration

2022-10-10 Thread Brian Hunt
I thought I understood this but appears that I had it wrong.

According to the SMTR calibration procedure, it is set with the PRE on and
ATTN off. Calibration sets a 50uV signal to S9 and a 1uV to S2-S3. See this in
the Calibration Procedures section of the manual (p51 in my 2009 version).

I’ve been using the SMTR ABS mode ever since I discovered it. YMMV

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Question on S-Meter Calibration

2022-10-10 Thread Walter Underwood
I’m pretty sure the K3 has an S-meter absolute mode that adjusts the S-meter
reading when preamps and/or attenuators are turned on.

The KX3 is supposed to have that mode, but it is not implemented. From the
manual errata:

"Not implemented: S-meter absolute mode (MENU:SMTR MD); addressing of multiple
transverters (XVn ADR)."

Mike ...

The 5,000 or so of us who actually got microphones with our KX2s really
do feel for you.  Your point, stated ad infinitum, was well-taken the
first time you made it.  But your complaint is not with us who have had
to delete your many posts.  IT IS WITH ELECRAFT.  We can't do one darn
thing to help you.  There is no question but that microphones paid-for
should be microphones-delivered or else money refunded.  If Elecraft

should seek an attorney.

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] Strange Selective Hearing in My K3

2022-10-10 Thread Brian Hunt
Sounds like a thermal problem, possibly with the 8v regulator. I have a problem
with my K3 (S# 4K range). If the rig is cold ~60 F the 8v apparently goes out
of regulation evidenced by the display illumination dimming on key down. The
rig works normally otherwise. The problem goes away once the FP Temp warms a
little - I wrote the number down somewhere but can’t find it now.

Good luck & 73,

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] Strange Selective Hearing in My K3

2022-10-10 Thread Michael Carter
Hi Eric,

I'm voting with my friend Dave, K1WHS,
for looking first at the voltage regulators.

The 8 volt regulator supplies the TC4427
gate driver IC, which in turn provides 7R/7T voltages
separately to the Transmit and Receive switching circuits.
The loss of the 7R/7T voltages would disable the
PIN diode T/R switches and render the radio deaf
and unable to transmit.

If the 8 volt regulator doesn't collapse after some
time observing its output voltage, I would check
the TC4427 (U11 on the RF Board) to be sure its
outputs are correct (the 7R/7T voltages). The
regulator is likely the first culprit - its '8A' output
pin provides power to a large number of circuits
in the radio.

Mike, K8CN

Chris,

The KDSP2 consists of two boards: the factory-built DSPx module and the
KDSP2 "carrier" board. When you say you swapped in a working DSP module,
do you mean a working DSPx, or the entire KDSP2 assembly?

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] Strange Selective Hearing in My K3

2022-10-10 Thread David Olean
When the signals disappear, can you transmit and see RF output? You
might be losing one of the regulated DC voltages from the three terminal
regulators mounted on the side wall.  If you lose TX as well, check to
make sure those regulators are working. It will affect all bands.

I should add that when I transmit a tone from WJST-X, say, the red

power or SWR is registered on my external meter.

So that would seem to eliminate anything disconnected from the rear
