[Elecraft] K3S- KPA3 100 Watt Amplifier not working
The 100-watt KPA-3 amplifier on my K3S quit working. The IPA is working fine with 12 watts output. Please advise what I can check on the KPA-3 to try and determine the issue. [Elecraft] Interference from KPA1500 power supply
Yesterday I noticed in going from 100 watts to near a KW on 10 meters that when I turned my KPA1500 ON, the background noise on my K3S jumped up about three S-units according to the P3. Just turning on the front panel main "ON" switch starts the noise even though the operate switch is still in Standby. Then when turning the amp back off the noise fades for about 1 or 2 seconds before it drops out completely. The noise is certainly enough to completely cover any weaker 10-meter signal. I checked for this happening on all other bands and found no noise on any other bands. The noise is certainly enough to completely cover any weaker 10 meter signal. I have been using the KPA1500 for several years, and this is something totally new which just started. Has anyone else encountered this problem? What are other operators' thoughts? Re: [Elecraft] P3 Panadapter with K2
Does anyone know if the P3 Panadapter will work with the K2 transceiver? It does, with a number of caveats: - The K2 does not have an IF Out port. On my K2, I never installed the no-antennatuner BNC connector; I modified the connector to use a small coax cable (AWAY from the high RF output of the antenna circuit to avoid leaks) and re-purposed the BNC for "IF Out". In hindsight, perhaps I should have used a SMA connector and some filler rings (for the same hole at the back of the K2) - You need an IF buffer amplifier. Search for "Clifton Laboratories Z1". The buffer amplifier comes in two versions, Z1-K2 and Z1-U. You want the K2 model, or get the universal model and add the 4.915 Mhz filtering. - The IF output is a tad low, you won't see "the bottom of the band" though I still found this useful - The P3 cannot talk to the K2. Which means that there won't be frequencies on the P3 display, nor can you make the P3 "shift" as you can make the K3 do. The center will be the frequency you are receiving (which I consider most useful anyway), but that's what you get. - The K2 has some BFO leakage back into the IF. For reception that does not matter; however for spectrum display you will find a spike in the center of the frequency you are receiving. There are some mods to make it "less" but not "gone". If you have a live band you probably won't notice; I was using the QO100 passband on which signals have a max strength of 24dB above noise and then the spike shows. I did not find it objectionable. I do suggest you take some time to look up the original Clifton Z1 documentation; it is a piece of art on the same standard as the K2 manual if not higher. I learned quite some things by just looking at the documentation. It is very unfortunate that Jack is no longer with us; however production of the amplifier has been taken over by DX engineering who sells pre-built boards which seem to be of similar standard as the ones Jack provided. Is it useful? Definitely! Recommended? Yes. But you should know the limitations, which is why my posting is more verbose. 73, Geert Jan PE1HZG __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
Re: [Elecraft] K3- Part fell out!
Thanks to everyone that offered suggestions. Primarily culprit is one of the surface mount resistors on the KPA3. I won't know for sure until I take the KPA3 out next week, but I had that part fail before on my personal K3. I got the repair info from Keith WE6R and, once I can verify (or not) that that is the problem, I can get on with repairs. Bill, If you add the Clifton Labs Z2 buffer amplifier (now sold by DX Engineering) to provide an IF output from the K2, it will work as a spectrum display. [Elecraft] KX3, FLDIGI, SignaLinkUSB - Not Exiting XMIT Mode
I have a KX3, running through the KXPA100, connected via Serial USB to a Windows 10 machine. I'm using Win4k3 2.0.4.0 and com0com to share out the COMPort. I have N3FJP's Amateur Contact Log running, as well as FLDIGI v 4.1.18 in normal mode. When I run a macro in FLDIGI, the macro engages the XMIT mode, sends the data via PSK, and disables TX mode, and I can hear a switch flip in the KX3, but 1) the transmit light is still red and 2) there is no RX. If I manually press the XMIT button, the light goes off and RX begins again. This is a new development which started earlier this morning as my Elmer was running PSK for VOTA (W1AW/7). No apparent changes were made to configuration. I've reviewed the Cady book on PSK settings, and double checked connections from the KX3, Signalink, and KXPA. No obvious issues. Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft Digest, Vol 225, Issue 9
There are very few reasons to have 3.3 Ohm resistor anywhere. It's much more likely to have a 3.3 K Ohm resistor. This it is likely labeled 3K3 not 3R3. There is a saying that if you hear hoof beats, think horses not zebras. Going with horses, you are looking in the schematics for a 3.3 K ohm resistor. One you find it (them, there may well be more than one), they will be designated as on a board and a number for that board, eg: R120 or something like that. Find those 3.3 K ohm resistors on the various boards (with board layouts) - missing? There you go. Since you report that the unit seems to be working for the things you do, it's possibly in a more obscure area of the circuitry. However I wouldn't be taking the thing apart for that, just look where you can. It's very possible that at some point someone just dropped a part in there. You didn't mention if you are the original owner. One aspect of "MARS Mod" on various transceivers is the removal of a resistor. Maybe someone had an oopsie ( I don't know if K3 require's this sort of mod, but - who knows? Also someone could have just dropped one into it by accident. So - don't take the thing apart in your quest unless you know what you are doing. Re: [Elecraft] Keying the K3s
Running exactly at 5.0 watts or 50 watts setting CAN cause a change in the TX GAIN setting on a K3(s). That is the setting that can trigger the calibration algorithm; which if not connected to a dummy load, can be 'wrong' (causing problems). The K4 has a menu item to en/disable changes in this setting, the K3(s) does not. This is confirmed by Elecraft repair folks (on the groups.io list for the K3) and possibly here on qth.net. Running at 4.9/5.1 or 49/51 watts output is HIGHLY recommended if that is the output neighborhood that is wanted. Not every detail is in the manual (of which many updates have been made over the years) and not every firmware comment has been folded into the manual either. So you look at the firmware comments AND the latest manual(s); then the email list_*S*_ for a complete answer. 73, Rick nk7i On 1/24/2023 10:21 AM, j...@kk9a.com wrote: I do not believe that 5 and 50 watts cause issues on the K3S. Re: [Elecraft] Keying the K3s
I’d like clarification on this also. I don’t run an amp but I’ve run my K3 for years at 5 watts for QRP events without issue. My TUN PWR is set to 7 watts to keep my remote tuner and LPA happy. The manual states that to manually initiate a TX GAIN calibration to set TUN PWR to exactly 5 (or 50) watts and hold the TUNE button. I can imagine that accidentally doing so into an antenna rather than a 50 Ohm dummy load could really mess up the TX GAIN calibration. Thoughts? 73, Brian, K0DTJ > On Jan 24, 2023, at 09:20, Lee Hiers wrote: > > How would one search the archives for this info? > > Is this only the K3S, or does it also include K3? Lee, just try searching with keywords, such as TX GAIN, K3 power spikes, TX GAIN Calibration, etc. etc. The best thing you can do, if you're not convinced transmitting at 5 or 50w is a risk, is ask Elecraft. Re: [Elecraft] Keying the K3s
How would one search the archives for this info? Is this only the K3S, or does it also include K3? How about a K3/10? And you're saying one should never transmit with the transmitter set to 5W (or 50W)? I do drive an Alpha 8410 with my K3/10 - and I've probably done so at 5W out of the K3/10, although normally I'm using 12W. I would appreciate a link to something that indicates this is a bad thing to do. 73 de Lee, AA4GA On Tue, Jan 24, 2023 at 10:57 AM Jim McCook wrote: > Dave, > > You should _never_ key the K3s at 5w (or 50w)! Re: [Elecraft] arrl.net domain is being blocked!
ARRL implemented new computer system that changed some usernames (mine included) form their call sign to their email address. That results in the ARRL email redirector rejecting the mailto address. Call ARRL and get them involved. Their IT department had to fix mine. All well now. Re: [Elecraft] Keying the K3s
Dave, You should _never_ key the K3s at 5w (or 50w)! It can disrupt the TX GAIN settings and create huge power spikes, which can be a real problem if you use an amplifier. Just use 6w or 4w or 5.5w, etc. You can confirm this with Elecraft, who will tell you the same thing. Check previous threads; it has been discussed before. 73, Jim W6YA __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
