Re: [Elecraft] Power spike early K3
My K3s has this problem, but it only happens intermittently. When driving the KPA1500, there would be a spike of about 70w. Drive level was between 20 and 25 watts. The K3s spent three months at Elecraft and they could not fix it. I finally discovered two things that caused the power spike: 1. Exiting the CW QRQ mode; either by turning on RIT or by using the menu. 2. Narrowing the passband from XFIL 3 to XFIL 4 (1000 Hz to 400 Hz in my case.), either with the XFIL button or the Width control. These appear to be the only things that cause the power spike. This leads me to believe it's a firmware problem (v 5.67, the most recent). I tried going back to an earlier FW version, but could not figure out how to load it. It doesn't look like there will be any new FW updates for the K3 series. --- 73, Mike Cizek WØVTT -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net On Behalf Of N2TK via Elecraft Sent: Saturday, 20 May, 2023 15:51 To: m...@sj2w.se; elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Power spike early K3 I had the same problem with the K3/KPA1500 combination. I have done a TX gain calibration without it making a difference. The spike happens mainly when you have changed to a new band and during the first transmission. After that the spike is a lot smaller and not much of an issue. Anybody have any ideas of what this could be because of? It kind of makes it impossible to run a solid state amplifier on the radio and probably not good for the tube amplifiers either. /Mike, SJ2W __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to tony@verizon.net __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to mgci...@gmail.com __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
Re: [Elecraft] K3 Rotary encoder
N5NA has written an excellent account of replacing the small push-button encoders. https://www.n5na.net/s9y/index.php?/archives/26-Replacing-Elecraft-K3-Push-Button-Encoders.html I have replaced all of these encoders in several K3 radios over the past 5 years. It is not a job for the faint-hearted. However, if you take your time and cut the mounting pins of the encoders before you unsolder them, then you will succeed. Do not attempt to remove the LED board. Make sure you wick out the mounting holes thoroughly or you will have difficulty installing the new encoders. Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft T1 auto tuner question
The T1 specs say that it should function with input power as low as 0.5 watts. An 8 dB attenuator at the output of your 4-5 watt QRP rig should still give you close to 0.5 watt into the T1, and the attenuator acts as a buffer that diminishes the reflected power from the high SWR load. Tune with the attenuator in place, and then remove it after the match with the T1 is achieved. https://www.rfcafe.com/references/electrical/vswr-reduction.htm https://www.rfcafe.com/references/calculators/vswr-return-loss-conversion-calculator.htm According to the 2nd link, an 8 dB attenuator would turn a 20:1 SWR at the load into less than 1.4:1 at the output of the rig. HUGE CAVEAT: An attenuator designed for 8 dB only gives the design value reduction in reflected power for input and load impedances that match the design of the attenuator. An attenuator designed for 8 dB with 50 ohm input and output won't give 8 dB with radically different impedances. That being said, it doesn't take much attenuation to help and I think it would be worth a try. I can't think of any other way to do what you want unless the T1 can be manually stepped through a match and you monitor the input with a VNA (NanoVNA, for example). There are a lot of T-network attenuator calculators out there ... here is one of them. https://www.pasternack.com/t-calcualtor-tee-attn.aspx 73, Dave AB7E On 5/22/2023 11:52 AM, n...@comcast.net wrote: I have a T1 that I have used for several years.
