Another thing that Windoze has done more than once on an upgrade is to
change sampling rate. It SHOULD be 48 kHz Stereo. Check both recording

Re: [Elecraft] Power spike early K3

2023-05-22 Thread Mike Cizek W0VTT
My K3s has this problem, but it only happens intermittently. When driving
the KPA1500, there would be a spike of about 70w. Drive level was between
20 and 25 watts. The K3s spent three months at Elecraft and they could not
fix it. I finally discovered two things that caused the power spike:
1. Exiting the CW QRQ mode; either by turning on RIT or by using the menu.
2. Narrowing the passband from XFIL 3 to XFIL 4 (1000 Hz to 400 Hz in my
case.), either with the XFIL button or the Width control.
These appear to be the only things that cause the power spike.

This leads me to believe it's a firmware problem (v 5.67, the most recent).
I tried going back to an earlier FW version, but could not figure out how to
load it. It doesn't look like there will be any new FW updates for the K3
series.

I had the same problem with the K3/KPA1500 combination. I recalibrated the
K3. Then I made sure I don't run the K3 at exactly 5W or 50W. The problem
has not reappeared.N2TK, Tony

Subject: [Elecraft] Power spike early K3

Hi,

We have an early serial K3 which has got an issue with power spikes. I have
done a TX gain calibration without it making a difference. The spike happens
mainly when you have changed to a new band and during the first
transmission. After that the spike is a lot smaller and not much of an
issue.

Anybody have any ideas of what this could be because of? It kind of makes it
impossible to run a solid state amplifier on the radio and probably not good
for the tube amplifiers either.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Rotary encoder

2023-05-22 Thread Gary Hembree
N5NA has written an excellent account of replacing the small push-button
encoders.

https://www.n5na.net/s9y/index.php?/archives/26-Replacing-Elecraft-K3-Push-Button-Encoders.html

I have replaced all of these encoders in several K3 radios over the past
5 years.  It is not a job for the faint-hearted. However, if you take
your time and cut the mounting pins of the encoders before you unsolder
them, then you will succeed.  Do not attempt to remove the LED board.
Make sure you wick out the mounting holes thoroughly or you will have
difficulty installing the new encoders.

Good luck

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft T1 auto tuner question

2023-05-22 Thread David Gilbert

The T1 specs say that it should function with input power as low as 0.5
watts.  An 8 dB attenuator at the output of your 4-5 watt QRP rig should
still give you close to 0.5 watt into the T1, and the attenuator acts as
a buffer that diminishes the reflected power from the high SWR load.
Tune with the attenuator in place, and then remove it after the match
with the T1 is achieved.

https://www.rfcafe.com/references/electrical/vswr-reduction.htm

https://www.rfcafe.com/references/calculators/vswr-return-loss-conversion-calculator.htm

According to the 2nd link, an 8 dB attenuator would turn a 20:1 SWR at
the load into less than 1.4:1 at the output of the rig.

HUGE CAVEAT:  An attenuator designed for 8 dB only gives the design
value reduction in reflected power for input and load impedances that
match the design of the attenuator.  An attenuator designed for 8 dB
with 50 ohm input and output won't give 8 dB with radically different
impedances.  That being said, it doesn't take much attenuation to help
and I think it would be worth a try.  I can't think of any other way to
do what you want unless the T1 can be manually stepped through a match
and you monitor the input with a VNA (NanoVNA, for example).

There are a lot of T-network attenuator calculators out there ... here
is one of them. https://www.pasternack.com/t-calcualtor-tee-attn.aspx

Both the QCX-mini and the SW-3B require a 2.0 or less SWR. The
documentation for SW-3B says that operating at any SWR over 2.0 will damage
the radio. The outputs varies with voltage, but usually runs at 4-5 watts
with a 12V supply. If I attach the T1 to that rig, and perhaps the QCX-mini
as well, it will require the rig attached to present a constant carrier to
tune. This seems to eliminate using an auto tuner with the SW-3B at a
minimum in that configuration.

Can someone tell me how I might get the T1 to tune in the field with
something other than the rig. If I could trigger it to tune, then I could
attach to the radio after the tune cycle. My plan is to use a resonant
antenna, but that may not always be possible, especially with a three band
rig like the SW-3B.

Thanks,

2023-05-22 Thread Jorge Diez - CX6VM
hello

I have a remote setup, K3/100 at the station, K3/o mini at home, TASCAM
US-125M for digital

Usually I have TASCAM LINE know at the second line level (it have 9 lines
levels) and K3 AF knob at the second point level

I needed to disconnect all the equipments last week. Then assembled all in
a new desk but now I notice that to see station on the WSJT-X bandscope i
need to increase K3 AF knob to the 4 point level and TASCAM to the 6-7 line
level

Seems is coming less audio from the K3

Any idea what is wrong?

thanks in advance!

[Elecraft] For Sale - Elecraft AX-1 Multiband Portable Antenna

2023-05-22 Thread Pete Smith N4ZR
At the CWOps dinner in Dayton, I won an Elecraft AX1 multiband portable
whip antenna with the 40M extender, bipod and tripod adapter - all
together costing $227 from Elecraft.

Since the chances of my operating SOTA or POTA are somewhere between
zero and some imaginary number, I'm offering the entire system, still in
the original packaging from Elecraft, for $120 including shipping. If
interested, please respond directly, off the reflector.

[Elecraft] K3 - ERR DSE

2023-05-22 Thread dd0vs
Hello YLs and Oms,

I am still struggling with my K3 and the ERR DSE.

In rare cases I can switch on K3 completely and it runs stable.

That let me assume, that the startup of µC, e.g. DSP, is not working
correctly.

Do you have any further hints to find out where the issue is located?
