[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement
Good Evening, The fir trees have two to three inches of bright green new growth. The ferns are between six and ten feet tall but not done unrolling. The hummingbirds returned and brought friends. It is quite busy right now, I have to duck when I walk out the door. They enjoy flying at eye level close enough to feel a breeze. The sun is moderately active. A number of M class flares this week, but no major CMEs are due. A mix of fast and slow streams of solar wind is pummeling the ionosphere. Should lead to some interesting and varied QSB. Summer storms will add some noise. It will start raining tonight and continue for a few days. I don't expect lighting, it's not that common here. Please join us on (or near): 14050 kHz at 2200z Sunday (3 PM PDT Sunday) 7047 kHz at z Monday (5 PM PDT Sunday) 73, Kevin. KD5ONS - The case of the missing hummingbirds Anna's hummingbirds are the first to arrive each spring. They take advantage of my feeder for a few weeks then become more scarce. Next the Rufous hummingbirds arrive and use the feeder. This year they sipped through one feeder full, then disappeared after I refilled it. No Rufous hummingbirds for seven days. But I did notice more birds arriving. One of them has a prominent red head and breast - the Red breasted sapsucker. They make parallel rows of notches in the bark of trees. One species they harvest is the Douglas fir. I have plenty. One of them has been chopping notches in the underside of a bough right outside this window. The red flash, and the nifty inverted landing maneuver, catch my eye when I'm at the keyboard. I did a web search on them and found some interesting tidbits. One is that Rufous hummingbirds are known to follow sapsuckers around to exploit their many sap wells. They use them as another food source when flowers are lacking. Hummingbirds also feed from the clouds of tiny flying annoyances; of that I am grateful. Now I had a clue to work with, only a day later I saw a Rufous hummingbird on the underside of the bough right outside this window. When the sapsucker moved in they found a rich resource to tap, with a variety of nutrients. After a week feasting from the sap wells they are now back fighting for my feeder. I chased five of them off so I could water my plants. A number of species of butterflies enjoy my blooming chives. The hummingbirds don't mind at all. https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Red-breasted_Sapsucker/ __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
Re: [Elecraft] Want to build a K2
Hank, To use the KXPA100 with the K2, you will have to install the K2 Keying Output mod. This is not available from Elecraft, but boards are available from FAR circuits. The KXPA100 will bandswitch when RF is applied. You might ask Dave W8FGU if he has any built up as kits d...@w8fgu.com. He had mentioned that possibility some time ago, but I don't know if it materialized. 73, Don W3FPR On 6/17/2023 1:15 PM, K4HYJ via Elecraft wrote: Hey folks. Re: [Elecraft] Want to build a K2
Hank, At this point the only options unavailable in addition to the KPA100 are the K60XV 60M/Tranverter module and the KDSP2 Audio Filter module. The KAT2 internal 20W ATU is still available as are all the other modules. To key the KXPA100 amp (or any other external amp) you will need to add a keying circuit to the basic K2 as it is not a native option in the K2. There are many circuits found on the web for doing this. If you don't want to roll one on your own, I happen to sell a kit for doing just that here: https://www.w8fgu.com/k2_trdriver.html As an addition, I also work part time for Elecraft providing tech support for their older line of products like the K2, K1 and KX1. As I am not physically located at Elecraft in Watsonville, CA (I'm just south of Detroit, MI), you can always get a hold of me at dave at elecraft dot com. I support all the new kits being sold and if you pull the trigger, get a hold of me for a couple of tips before you begin you K2 build. It is a highly satisfactory experience to build something of this magnitude and while we have plenty of stock left for the K2, as you know, it won't last forever. It is well worth the effort. 73, Dave, W8FGU On 6/17/2023 1:15:26 PM, "K4HYJ via Elecraft" wrote: Hey folks. I want to try and tackle a more challenging kit build. [Elecraft] Want to build a K2
Yes, the KXPA100 works FB with a K2/10, and gives you the built-in 100w ATU if installed. You can also then hook up a larger amp on the other side of the KXPA100 as well. No brag, just fact. I urge anyone thinking of building a K2 to get off the fence and order one now. The K2 is a blast to build, and when you're done, you have a fine, elegant, simple radio to enjoy The writing is on the wall--supply chain problems and parts unavailability will eventually kill the K2, and it will join the K1 and KX1 in legend. These days, I operate my K2 as much as my K4! One final thought that never occured to me before it happened--you may not be physically capable of building a K2 for all of your ham life I'm glad I built every Elecraft kit ever offered--the best kits and best support--what are YOU waiting for? 73, Eric NF6S ex WD6DBM, ex WN6RVG __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
[Elecraft] Shipping dates
I got this a couple days ago - We don't have an ETA for the KXV3B boards yet. Eric is in the process of updating a message now. We hope to have that posted to the reflector and via a newsletter by about mid-week next week. Re: [Elecraft] k3 Mic gain self resetting to 1
My thinking was to restore from an earlier workspace then reinstall the IC-7300 but I will take a look at the controls first. I don't remember making any recent changes to to the control configuration. [Elecraft] k3 Mic gain self resetting to 1
Since you use DXLab I'd suggest checking Commander's "User-defined Controls" configuration. Is there a slider for Mic gain? If so, is it configured to "Initialize radio"? In Commander click "Help" then select "sliders" for more info. Re: [Elecraft] Signal source for KX3 temperature frequency calibration
For those considering using the excellent dual output Leo Bodnar GPSDO, be aware that you cannot select certain combinations of output frequencies. I have the dual output unit and it can be set for 10 MHz on one socket and 1 MHz on the other, which was ideal to drive my old Racal counter at 1 MHz and a signal generator that needed 10 MHz. However, it is currently set at 49.152 to lock an Icom IC-9700 via their add-on board, but the other output cannot be set at the same time to give 10 MHz for my K4D. The limitation is related to the synthesiser chip used, no firmware update will change that. I have done the KX3 extended temp cal and it works really well in hot temperatures. For the cal you really do need a very stable source, such as a Leo Bodnar unit. Incidentally, the K4 is stable enough for all except the most critical of users… I have other 10 MHz references but don’t both to connect them to my K4. 73 Dave G4AON K4D #286 -- Sent from my iPhone SE __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
