[Elecraft] Re: Stranger than real life

2005-06-12 Thread ANNE NORMAN
And I still find it faintly obscure that IC pins are spaced at a tenth of an
inchwhere does that come from?
Older hams this side will recall school exercise books which had all the
imperial measurements printed on the back. Horse racing still deals with
furlongs (the length of a furrow...) and cricket pitches are a chain (22yds)
"ten chains = one furlong". Ah, Happy Days!
Pete, G0PKS.

[Elecraft] Another Antenna Analyser

2005-04-16 Thread ANNE NORMAN
Francophone kit-builders will enjoy the site of F6BQU.

For some reason my posting is sent back if I paste the right address; but
you'll find him as lpistor using chez.tiscali.fr and then go to "Entree du
site" then "la passion du radioamateurisme" and "mes realisations publiees dans
la presse specialisee" and finally "Analyseur d'antennes compact 'Antan' ".

I haven't built one yet myself but it looks like a fun thing to do! (Apologies
to those in the know for lack of accents!)

Regards to all, Pete, G0PKS.

[Elecraft] Re: Bad Fist

FWIW: When I was first learning morse using pre-recorded cassettes on a walkman
I quickly become familiar with the content; I then wired the output from a
practice sidetone oscillator to one headphone and the walkman to the other.
You quickly judge whether you are keying sympathetically!

[Elecraft] QRO Power Supplies

2005-03-10 Thread ANNE NORMAN
From: Pete Norman, g0pks.

I've come across some very neat, physically small, switch mode power supplies,
rated at 23A. Is the general consensus that these are A Good Thing or To Be
Avoided At All Costs?

I'll be needing to equip myself with something soon (I hope) and any advice
would be helpful. Regards to all. Pete.

[Elecraft] It does was it says on the tin!

2005-01-22 Thread ANNE NORMAN
>From Pete Norman:

I don't know whether you get the same adverts stateside for certain stains and
varnishes but there's one over here that simply says, "It does what it says on
the tin!"

I am delighted to say that on a thoroughly miserable day in Somerset I feel
dead chuffed because #4609 is alive and kicking, and does what it says in the
manual, after what seems to have been a troublefree build. I am sure I can
refine, hone and perfect settings and parameters in due course but at the
moment I can't praise the Elecraft team enough for such a good experience.
Even my wife is impressed with my calmness during the build, the fact that it
works so well and how nice it looks!

Handy hints for (potential) new builders:
Download the manual six months in advance and learn it off by heart (well you
get the idea!).
Buy lots of little brown envelopes and sort bits into them as you inventory
them...and label carefully.
Write out all the odd small caps on a large sheet of white paper and stick them
to it with masking tape.

Thank you all! Pete, g0pks.

[Elecraft] PLL Ref Osc Range

2005-01-17 Thread ANNE NORMAN
From: Pete Norman
Hi everyone! I've got the crystal zero beat on 4 MHz but the best PLL range I
can manage is 9.5 kHz which is frustratingly close to the required range! I
think everything is in the right place! Any suggestions, please? Pete, g0pks.

[Elecraft] Re: Audio Diary

2005-01-11 Thread ANNE NORMAN
From: Pete Norman

Well those pesky IC pins must have behaved themselves because when I switched
on for the first time everything checked out A1 OK and I think that's the first
time I can ever say that
All the more exciting because I am doing an audio diary of my build for a
magazine I do recordings for which goes to the blind and partially sighted. If
you want an extra buzz, try doing a "live recording" of the most critical
moments; just as well I spotted I had put the MPU in back to front before I
switched on!
If any of you guys have got comments I could add I'd be pleased to include
them. Does anybody have experience of the Voice software? It would be useful
if I could let people know how effective it is.
By the way, my digital multimeter has a voice synthesizer, so you can
concentrate on where you are putting the probes, and then Professor Hawking
tells you what your reading is. Highly recommended!
Right, time to start on the RF Board!
Regards to all!Pete, g0pks.

[Elecraft] Re: IC pins

2005-01-04 Thread ANNE NORMAN
From: Pete Norman

Hello everyone! I'm just toddling along with my build. The major problem so
far has been fixing the bail to the bottom panel! What a beast!

Anyway, it occurs to me (and has often occurred to me) why do we have to reform
the pins on ICs? How come they aren't manufactured the "right" shape? I go
into ESD-panic mode every time I have to re-form them and some have been a
complete pain to match up to their socket.

Anybody got a fool-proof, first-time technique for this?

(Having spent six months studying the manual before starting has distinct
advantages by the way)

Regards to all, Pete, g0pks.
