Re: [Elecraft] K2 Question
I want to thank all of you for the outpouring of comments and suggestions regarding the K2. I did not realize all the options available and you all have provided me with good information to evaluate making my selection. As mentioned to some, my goal is to get down to one main radio (besides my K1) which is capable of battery operation both at home and in the field and has a good track record. As my soldering days are long behind me, the K2 has a great following upon which I feel I can rely. Since I am a casual operator with no contesting desires other than sprints and 90% CW there are many features which would not be necessary. [Elecraft] K2 Question
QUESTION: For those who have only one radio to use for base station and occasional field operations have you found the K2 to be more than adequate or do you recommend the K2/100 with external ATU? [Elecraft] Inverted-L (was OT: Vertical antenna)
Going from loop to vertical involves two very different lob patterns. It was never mentioned if the antenna performance was to favor local or DX. Here is one which it does not matter as it adapts for both. A nice compromise antenna which takes into account: ---high and low angle lobe patterns ---good match (resonant on 80m) ---small footprint ==DESCRIPTION=== INVERTED-L: 33 ft vertical, 33 ft top wire, feed at base against 12 16ft radials. I use Radio Shack low loss 300 ohm tv wire for feed According to calculations EZNEC had a 40ft top wire. In the field I trimmed it until we got an acceptable match on several bands For supports I have used the DK9SQ mast as the main and used the Black Widow 20ft for the end support with great success I use RCA connectors for many of my antennas. I install male RCAs on wires and interconnect with using DOUBLE FEMALES. For 300 ohm TV wire I will solder short piece of speaker wire to each of the conductors and then securely tape the soldered area to the ribbon insulator body . To the end of each speaker wire I afix a MALE RCA. Generally I will make one speaker wire on each end a little shorter (3/4 inch) so I can tell easily identify which wire is which. The RCAs work great and it they break off in the field I carry wire nuts for emergencies I have EZNEC pattern (PDF) for several bands and also a sketch for the 300 ohm connection if you want more details Note at the QTH I have used this for 80 and 160m with good success including contacts with Japan on 160m. I am sure the key is the other fellows has HUGE arrays but it worked. [Elecraft] K1 Reverse Polarity protection/battery fusing?
For about a year I have been operating my K1 strictly battery power. I have a barrel connector attached to a pair of red/black wires with red/black alligator clips to connect to the battery. If you want to deal with specifics rather than generalities let me suggest you look at one of the computer programs by the late Reg G4FGQ and in particular DIPOLE 3. Re: [Elecraft] dipole antenna efficiency
Interesting discussion. I have a question regarding this topic I hope the more learned in the group cans help clarify. Although efficiency is important is determining an antenna selection, is antenna lobe pattern just as important? If the lobe pattern did not allow you to say work DX or to work a particular direction then is efficiency all that important? Should we look at the desired pattern for a particular operating goal then consider the antenna efficiency? Re: [Elecraft] 60 foot fiberglass pole (Pole Strength)
SUGGESTION Use of fiberglass poles for end supports WITHOUT GUYING would indicate a lack of understanding of strength and stiffness of an end loaded beam. Most people however do not deal with this type of engineering so a simpler approach may be warranted As was presented about 6 weeks ago on QRP-L, there needs to be a deflection test applied for comparative technical details. A simple approach would be: 1. Mount pole horizontally about 4 ft above ground 2. Add with to the tip in 1/2 lb amounts and measure deflection 3. Record results for comparison By knowing the load you will place on the mast tip you can know what the deflection will be beforehand. If unacceptable you can look at another support or check to see if guying would remedy the problem. To simulate guying, you take the horizontal pole and move a support along the horizontal pole to check if this remedies the deflection problem. If you guy at say the 20ft point, depending upon the pole design you may also need to guy every 10ft for heavier loading NOW you can approach the question of what will be an adequate SUPPORT in a more professional manner. For guying I generally use cheap Phillip screwdrivers as anchor points for my masts pushed in at a 45 degree angle. I was originally looking for a replacement for my SIERRA (K1) but the K2 might be a better alternative for replacing two rigs. I am a casual contester but want the capability to be able to pull the weak stations out of the mud. My backpacking days are limited but field ops is still viable activity.
