Re: [Elecraft] K2 Question

2011-07-21 Thread ARDUJENSKI
I want to thank all of you for the outpouring of comments and suggestions
regarding the K2. I did not realize all the options available and you all
have provided me with good information to evaluate making my selection.

As mentioned to some, my goal is to get down to one main radio (besides my
K1) which is capable of battery operation both at home and in the field and
has a good track record. As my soldering days are long behind me, the K2
has a great following upon which I feel I can rely.

Since I am a casual operator with no contesting desires other than sprints
and 90% CW there are many features which would not be necessary.

Regards

[Elecraft] K2 Question

2011-07-19 Thread ARDUJENSKI
QUESTION: For those who have only one radio to use for base station and
occasional field operations have you found the K2 to be more than adequate or
do you recommend the K2/100 with external ATU? I am a casual operator; both
CW (90%) and SSB (10%).

Do those of you who have or had the K2/20 have regrets not getting the
K2/100?

Thank you in advance for your feedback

[Elecraft] Inverted-L (was OT: Vertical antenna)

2010-12-20 Thread ARDUJENSKI
Going from loop to vertical involves two very different lob patterns. It
was never mentioned if the antenna performance was to favor local or DX. Here
is one which it does not matter as it adapts for both.

A nice compromise antenna which takes into account:
---high and low angle lobe patterns
---good match (resonant on 80m)
---small footprint

==DESCRIPTION===

INVERTED-L: 33 ft vertical, 33 ft top wire, feed at base against 12 16ft
radials. I use Radio Shack low loss 300 ohm tv wire for feed

According to calculations EZNEC had a 40ft top wire. In the field I
trimmed it until we got an
 acceptable match on several bands

For supports I have used the DK9SQ mast as the main and used the Black
Widow 20ft
for the end support with great success

I use RCA connectors for many of my antennas. I install male RCAs on wires

and interconnect with using DOUBLE FEMALES. For 300 ohm TV wire I will
solder
short piece of speaker wire to each of the conductors and then securely
tape
the soldered area to the ribbon insulator body . To the end of each
speaker
wire I afix a MALE RCA. Generally I will make one speaker wire on each
end a
little shorter (3/4 inch) so I can tell easily identify which wire is
which.
The RCAs work great and it they break off in the field I carry wire nuts
for
 emergencies

I have EZNEC pattern (PDF) for several bands and also a sketch for the
300
ohm connection if you want more details

Note at the QTH I have used this for 80 and 160m with good success
including
contacts with Japan on 160m. I am sure the key is the other fellows has
HUGE
 arrays but it worked.

 Hope this helps

[Elecraft] K1 Reverse Polarity protection/battery fusing?

2010-09-22 Thread ARDUJENSKI
For about a year I have been operating my K1 strictly battery power. I
have a barrel connector attached to a pair of red/black wires with red/black
alligator clips to connect to the battery. As my eyesight is getting poor I
do not want to take the remote chance I can apply reverse polarity.

The manual (Section 11 OPERATION, Connections, Power Supply) only states
to install a 2 amp fuse but not sure if this is the best method

I would appreciate recommendations as to whether the 2 amp fuse will
suffice or if some sort of diode should be added

Thank you

[Elecraft] K1 headphone selection?

2008-12-03 Thread ARDUJENSKI
I was searching the archives for suggestion for a good quality portable
headsets for the K1 taking into account

(1) good low end response,
(2) comfortable to wear for a few hours and
(3) good volume and
(4) good sensitivity.

Many of the "stereo" headsets are about 32 ohm and not sure if that rules
these out performance wise.

I am trying to avoid buying 4 or 5 sets and hoping to gain from the LIST's

[Elecraft] K1 builder??

2008-11-16 Thread ARDUJENSKI

I was hoping to have the pleasure of building the K1 but my eyesight has
diminished to where it is extremely difficult to read the small parts and the
board lettering.

I would like to hire someone who is experienced at building the K1's to

The K1 is the 4-band kit with the back lit display and internal ATU.
Although I have the internal battery modification I will not be having that
installed.

This is not a rush project. Any recommendations? You can contact me directly

Try to share a little technical help for an ongoing issue did not seem to be

To keep this on the K3 as you requested, IS YOUR BALE TOO LOW on the K3?

Re: [Elecraft] dipole antenna efficiency (PROGRAMS)

2008-01-08 Thread ARDUJENSKI

If you want to deal with specifics rather than generalities let me suggest
you look at one of the computer programs by the late Reg G4FGQ and in
particular DIPOLE 3. You can play with various arrangements and get relative
values.
I often use this in conjunction with EZNEC for comparison. His programs are
relatively simple to use and I have found them to be quite accurate when
comparing to real-world performance

Re: [Elecraft] dipole antenna efficiency

2008-01-06 Thread ARDUJENSKI

Interesting discussion. I have a question regarding this topic I hope the
more learned in the group cans help clarify. Although efficiency is important
is determining an antenna selection, is antenna lobe pattern just as
important? If the lobe pattern did not allow you to say work DX or to work a
particular direction then is efficiency all that important? Should we look at
the
desired pattern for a particular operating goal then consider the antenna
efficiency?

[Elecraft] Cool Alternative stand/carrier for K1 with case

2006-09-02 Thread ARDUJENSKI
Surfing the net I came across an interesting site. W0VLZ has a tool box
which carries his K1 radio and misc items. On top he has a pair of METAL
HINGES.
They lay flat during transport then fold up for supporting the K1. Pretty
ingenious. Not for the backpacker but heck we all don't backpack all the time.

http://www.io.com/~nielw/qrp/unpack.htm

About the only thing I would add is a quick reference sheet with a light
backing and a magnetic strip so I could locate it on top or the side depending
upon the orientation of the K1.

Nice job Bill.

[Elecraft] KXPD1 with K1?

2006-08-28 Thread ARDUJENSKI
It appears that it would be simple to adapt the KXPD1 for use with the K1 by
manufacturing a simple L-bracket that afixes to the KTS1 and would actually
be cheaper than the bracket for the K2. That extra thumbscrew with the KTS1
can hold the bracket in place on the stand

I may have missed someone already doing this but I think that may be the way
I go with my K1. I see Michael VE3WMB March 2005 suggested adapting the
KXPD1-K2 so it could be mounted also on the K1...did this go any place? The
simple L-bracket will work much cheaper

You will want a high angle radiator such as a low dipole a few feet off the

[Elecraft] KBT1?

2006-08-26 Thread ARDUJENSKI
For the past several days I have been reading the archived messages
regarding the KBT1. There was a lot of discussion when the accessory became
available
but it is not clear if the problems/concerns have been addressed or if the
same issues exist. Is the KBT1 now available an improved version?

Thank you

[Elecraft] K1: 20 turn VFO pot?

2006-08-11 Thread ARDUJENSKI

I have a K1 on order and have been busy reading CONSTRUCTION guides and tips
on the Elecraft site. Reading up on the K1 an article by KE6US notes the use
of a 20 turn VFO pot to allow refined band spread without going to 80 khz
arrangement

http://www.ke6us.com/K1.htm

Those that made this change are you please with the results?

Re: [Elecraft] 60 foot fiberglass pole (Pole Strength)

2006-08-10 Thread ARDUJENSKI
SUGGESTION

Use of fiberglass poles for end supports WITHOUT GUYING would indicate a
lack of understanding of strength and stiffness of an end loaded beam. Most
people however do not deal with this type of engineering so a simpler approach
may be warranted

As was presented about 6 weeks ago on QRP-L, there needs to be a deflection
test applied for comparative technical details. A simple approach would be:

1. Mount pole horizontally about 4 ft above ground
2. Add with to the tip in 1/2 lb amounts and measure deflection
3. Record results for comparison

By knowing the load you will place on the mast tip you can know what the
deflection will be beforehand. If unacceptable you can look at another support
or check to see if guying would remedy the problem.

To simulate guying, you take the horizontal pole and move a support along
the horizontal pole to check if this remedies the deflection problem.

If you guy at say the 20ft point, depending upon the pole design you may
also need to guy every 10ft for heavier loading

NOW you can approach the question of what will be an adequate SUPPORT in a
more professional manner.

For guying I generally use cheap Phillip screwdrivers as anchor points for
my masts pushed in at a 45 degree angle.

[Elecraft] Slow code, etc

2006-06-26 Thread ARDUJENSKI
I remember reading the results of a poll on K3WWP's website that indicated
about 1/3 of cw folks used keyboards. I wonder if during contests if you may
have a higher percentage on keyboard making it a bit more difficult to slow
down (change settings) for the slower operators?

I sort of like my CW drawl and probably won't change much in the next few
years. But are many of you changing to keyboards?

[Elecraft] Elecraft Product Ideas (logger)

How about a module that plugs into the radio (exterior unit) that logs? When
done you come home and download into the computer at home.

[Elecraft] K2 Demo near Seattle?

2006-05-08 Thread ARDUJENSKI
I was wondering if someone would volunteer to provide me with a demo of the
K2 and point out its strength and weaknesses? I was originally looking for a
replacement for my SIERRA (K1) but the K2 might be a better alternative for
replacing two rigs. I am a casual contester but want the capability to be
able to pull the weak stations out of the mud. My backpacking days are limited
but field ops is still viable activity.
