[Elecraft] K3/100 low output power

2012-03-05 Thread Adriano Perazio
It was discussed few days ago about a problem of low power output on the k3
sometimes – bu i don´t remember the solution.
Well i had noticed that issue during day by day operation and solved after a
turn on-off-on.
But this weekend during the ARRL, it happened many times. The radio went to 5w
only or so.
Only once i saw an error on the lcd: ERR TXG.
I found a “solution”: on the k3 utility: re-calibrate the radio w/ a dummy load.
Anyone could help on that?

Tnx

Define older K3 please. Can you let us know when you started shipping K3's
with gold contacts; date or S/N?

Thanks!

Subject: [Elecraft] Older K3/100s can be updated to avoid possible ERR 12V
problem

Early K3s had tin plating on the connectors that supply 12 V DC to the
KPAIO3 and KPA3 modules. We discovered that in some climates the tin
plating can eventually corrode, reducing voltage to the PA module,
especially when operated at high duty cycle. This can result in an
ERR 12V warning (check circuit breaker) and the amplifier going
into bypass mode. Power output drops to 12 watts max in this case. In
some cases the power is temporarily restored after turning the K3 off
and back on.

The cure is to replace the tin-plated contacts with new ones which
have gold plating. It's fairly easy to replace just the pins involved.
I believe we've been shipping the gold-plated connectors since
sometime in 2009.

If you have an older K3/100 and you're planning to use their K3 in
high humidity or salt air, or if you've seen the warning message, you
should replace these connectors. They will be supplied free of charge
on request (email parts at elecraft dot com).

If you further questions on this topic, please email k3support.

2012-02-14 Thread Adriano Perazio
I´m not pretty sure but mine was Oct. 2010 but the problem was exactly the
same except for the msg error. I didn´t see any but i tried to put more than
12w but no way.
I went into the menu to check if the PA was enable and yes. After shut down
it was normal agn.
As i stopped radio after that for the Hamcation visit, i don´t know what
will happens next.

That's odd, as yours is newer than mine, and I'm pretty sure mine has
gold plated pins on all connectors. And, my K3 was delivered Aug3,
2010. Well after the 2009 date.

Asunto: Re: [Elecraft] K3/0 and Remoterig

 Jorge,

The standard RemoteRig RRC set supports the K3 Twin mode, there is not
a separate one hardware-wise, like there is for Yaesu.

There is a separate box available called K3 Twin that adds all the
cables necessary to connect both K3's to their respective RRC's.
However, you can build these cables if you want to save money, the
schematics are contained in the manual that you can download from the
 RemoteRig web site.

 You can buy:
 - Either the standard RRC set from HRO, direct from RemoteRig in Sweden
or another dealer and build your own cables. The cable set is also
available separately (sold as the K3 Accessory Kit).
 - Or buy the K3 Twin set including cables, currently only directly from
RemoteRig in Sweden. Elecraft should hopefully be selling these soon.

I assume Eric or Wayne will advise on availability of these from
Elecraft, as well as the K3/0, as soon as they are ready to.

[Elecraft] RTTY/PSK interface for the K3

2012-01-11 Thread Adriano Perazio
New on digi modes, i´m wondering what´s the benefits of adding an interface to
the K3?
I´ve been working with the K3 “internal” interface and seems to work very well.
I know there´s an offset when you work AFSK (this case) instead FSK and with a
FSK interface it would zero beat.
Am i right? Any suggestions of interface?
Main application is contesting.

the Heil iC adaptor since the mic plugs into the back panel and I use a
1/4 to miniature adaptor on the front for the headphones. I also use a
Heil desk mike for casual operating (another electret element), and it
plugs into the front panel mic jack and I use the K3 setup to switch

[Elecraft] {K3} RS 232

2011-03-03 Thread Adriano
Hello

Due to my problem on the KUSB adapter, i tried to connect the K3 on the PC via
a serial to serial cable (DB9 male to DB9 female).

On the N1MM i can click on a station on the bandmap and the radio follows but
when i move the dial nothing happens. Also the frequency o N1MM doesn´t move
when i turn the dial.

I checked the wires inside the cable and all of them looks ok.

On the K3 Utility nothing happens too.

Any clues pse ? The ARRL is coming and i´m desperate.

[Elecraft] K3 serial cable to PC

2011-03-01 Thread Adriano
Hello Elecrafters

After a 10 days trip i turned on my K3 and it was blocked. No buttons
working, no rx, nothing. Only the displays were working, on the lcd the msg:
VOX=OFF and a continuous beep.
So after a few turn on/off i decided go to EEINT (reset the radio).
Well after that i opened the K3 utility to start the configs again. It was also
not working. I tested the port and it was ok but the attempts to connect w/ the
radio failed. Not even the msg new hardware found came up. I was using the
KUSB cable (FTDI).
I decided to try another cable (PROLIFIC) after delete all old drivers and
install it again.. It did recognize the new driver but still no conection w/
the radio.

Any clue of what is going on here? Anyone had the same trouble?

Any way to test if the radio is damaged ?

Everything was turned off and disconected during my trip.

Tnx in advance.

 Hello Adriano,

You didn't say whether you were using FSK D or AFSK A, or what software
you were using. I will assume that when you say on the scope you mean
on the waterfall in software such as MMTTY.

If your radio is in FSK D, then it can receive on any frequency within
the filter bandpass, but it can only transmit on one frequency - the one
corresponding to the PITCH setting. If you click on a signal in the
waterfall to receive it, the frequency you choose in the software's
waterfall will probably not be the same as the one the radio will
transmit on. If you use the K3's MONitor function to listen to your
transmitted signal, you can hear whether the transmitted and received
 frequencies are the same.

Depending on the software you are using and its capabilities, there are
advanced methods to use mouse-tuning and AFC in FSK RTTY, but the
simplest solution to this problem is never to use clicking in the
waterfall to find a signal when you are using FSK. If you are CQing, you
can use AFC to let your receiving software tune in callers who come back
slightly off-frequency, but when you are planning to call someone else
who is CQing you should turn AFC off. In MMTTY, you can use the HAM
button to ensure that your receive frequency will be the same as your
transmit frequency. You should configure the HAM default to be the same
 as the radio's PITCH setting.

If your radio is in AFSK A, it can transmit on the same frequency it
receives on, although the best frequency for both transmitting and
receiving is the one in the PITCH setting and the HAM button. If you are
using MMTTY software the easiest way to ensure that your transmit and
receive frequencies are the same is to turn NET on. With NET on you can
safely use mouse-clicking to tune in a signal to work. However, if you
are calling CQ you should turn NET off, and use the HAM button before
your first transmission to establish your transmit frequency. If the
other station comes back off-frequency you can use AFC or a mouse-click
to copy the other station's signal, but as soon as the QSO is completed
you should click on the HAM button to return to your original transmit
 frequency.

[Elecraft] RX antenna (K3)

2011-01-10 Thread Adriano Perazio
Hello i´m considering a rx antenna for the K3. As i do not have space
for big systems like beverage, etc, i´m thinking about this one from DX
Eng.:

http://www.dxengineering.com/Parts.asp?ID=2190PLID=220SecID=79DeptID

http://www.dxengineering.com/Parts.asp?ID=2190PLID=220SecID=79DeptID=
12PartNo=DXE-ARAV3-1PE
Wich is a vertical one and i have space to put up 2 of them if needed.
What you guys think? It´s not a very free space and i have 90ft from my
TX antennas (lowest is 80m band).
I´m expecting less noise on the lower bands, and try the diversity rx on
K3.
What you guys think ?

Tnx in advance.

[Elecraft] K3 filter options

2011-01-03 Thread Adriano
I´m going to purchase another K3 unit and just wonder wich filters put on.

On the 1st i have: Main rx: 2.7 / 2.1 400hz for cw

I use only for serious dx and contesting SSB, starting on CW and thinking about
Digi modes.

Anyone could tell me if i have better choices changing this filter setup?

Like Dave and Jim I would recommend 2.7/1.8/400/200 along with
a 13 KHz (FM) filter if needed.

I have tried the 1.5 KHz narrow SSB filter and find to too tight
in nearly all conditions ... the 1.8 KHz will be used more often
and the 1.5 provides very little added benefits in really crowded
conditions.

I find the 400 Hz filters (measured bandwidth 420 - 450 Hz) to
be significantly better than the 500 Hz, 5 pole filters (measured
480 to 490 Hz) and the 200 Hz filter is a useful narrow filter
when needed compared to the 250 Hz filter which measures more
than 350 Hz at the - 6dB points.

With 2.8/1.8/400/200 Hz, my only wish is that there were three
more slots or at least that I could use the 13 KHz filter for
AM and ESSB transmit (without resorting to calling the 13 KHz
filter a 6 KHz filter).

That would be my first choice as well. I started with 2.7, 1.8, and
400, then added 250. In a CW or RTTY contest, I wouldn't be without
 400 or 250. I mostly run the IF between 400 and 200. A 1.8 roofer is
simply too wide for CW, and there are times when 250 is too narrow.

I have never heard a 2.1 roofer in a K3, so can't comment on that.

Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Latest Sherwood table

Is there a non-engineer's guide to the Sherwood table for those of us who
 are not engineers?

In particular, the table is sorted by Narrow Spaced Dynamic Range, and I
 see
that the FT5000 is listed first, but the K3 also gets a 101 in that
 column,
albeit with a pf footnote instead of just an f.

I decode these footnotes to be f = Measurement was Phase-Noise Limited
And pf = Measurement was Phase-Noise Limited and was with 200 Hz
 5-pole
 filter

OK - so why is the FT5000 at the top of the list? Why no indication of
 what
filter was used in the FT5000?

What is the second sort column for the table? What puts the FT5000 on
 top?

What does this table really tell us? It seems that both of these receivers
are pretty close as many of the numbers are similarly different from those
 listed below them.

When a parameter is higher or lower - which is better? I presume that the
higher the narrow-spaced dynamic range, the better, but what about 100kHz
blocking (for example). Is higher or lower there better? The K3 is a 140
 on
that one, and the FT5000 is a lowly 127. The Down-conversion Kenwood
 590
gets a 144 in this column - is that better or worse than the K3? But, the
590 only gets an 88 in the narrow-spaced dynamic range, so I guess that
 means it's much worse?

How does one interpret this data?

I wonder how such a high performance filter would work in the K3?
 Not that its
needed in the K3. However in the interest of science, it might be a
 worthy
pursuit. It also might push the K3 well ahead of the FT5000 in ultimate
 performance.

Not very well since it's at 70 MHz. ;-) The Inrad filters are
already better than whatever is in the FT5000 since Sherwood measured
ultimate rejection in the K3 at 105 dB vs 90 dB for the 5000.

Hello Ele´s

Would like to try the diversity rx but thinking about what kind of antenna

For the main i use Yagis for all bands and Cage Dipole for 80m.
What should be the benefit of a 2nd antenna if i supose that the yagi´s gonna
be always better than any wire or vertical or wathever?
I´m asking that cause i have to buy the ATU for that and of course it should
worth the investiment.

I am thinking whether I should get the SPE or wait for the KPA500+KAT500

Price of SPE here is US$3,800 so I am also thinking of the price
