[Elecraft] K3 E 00005 after Synth stiffener install
I installed the synth stiffener, and now have the following err msgs: ERR PL1 ERR VCO E 5 ERR VC4 00255 V PL1 *0.0 Assuming that it's not about "is unit plugged in?" and "wiggle the plugs", which I have done, is there any advice? I have the sub rx, so I swapped the two PLL cards, and the problem shifts to PL2. The working card now in PL1 works fine, and so I'm sure the REF osc works. I tested the plate I installed for continuity to ground, and it shows over 20Meg ohms. Very quite careful with smoothing the surface. The CAL procedure causes the relays to operate, so that much is OK. Anyone seen this? [Elecraft] [K3]
Regarding the use of filters on RTTY: > None of that is surprising given the nature of cascaded narrow filters Has anyone seen much difference between the FIR and IIR filters? __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] [K3] Filter loss and FLx GN settings
I am getting K3 sn 2308 sorted out. It has no mods, but all current firmware. I just installed a new version sub receiver board. The installation went fine. The main Rx has a 2.7 kHz 5 pole in FL3, 400 Hz 8 pole in FL4, and 250Hz 8 pole in FL5. The sub Rx has new 2.7 kHz 5 pole in FL3, and a new 400 Hz 8 pole in FL4. Using a sig gen centered on the narrow passband, on 20m, I see the following dBV readings, with AGC off: using FL3 -> +6.0dB using FL4 -> +2.1dB using FL5 -> 0.0dB Those readings are with the FLx GN settings for FL3 set to 0, FL4 and FL5 set to max, 8 dB. On the sub Rx, using the same conditions, I get: using FL3 -> -2.0dB using FL4 -> -2.6dB with the FL3 gain set to 0 and FL4 set to 6dB. It looks to me like there is a problem with the older set of 8 pole filters being more lossy than the new one. The drop in cw signal strength is quite noticeable when engaged. Any advice as to whether this is something that is remediable? I could swap the old 400Hz with the new one, or move the older filters to different positions, but that is a bit of work. [Elecraft] A modest proposal...
I would like to suggest that the good folks at Elecraft consider making paper manuals an optional item at check out time. It could save a little money and paper, and some like myself are more inclined to download the info in any case. Especially with radios that are evolving, like the K3, one ends up doing this when new firmware makes the old paper manual incomplete. So just being able to eliminate the paper completely would be a fine thing, IMHO. Re: [Elecraft] K2 Erratic power control with base cw K2
My problem here turned out to be an incorrect value for C34, which was why the CW time constant was so far off. Now all is working normally with the proper value. Thanks for this great support forum. It is definitely part of the value of the K2. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] [K2] Erratic power control with base cw K2
That was it. The previous owner had put in the wrong cap in the cw bandwidth mod (.047uf instead of .01uf) and that made all the difference. Key waveform now good, and power control is stable. Thanks for the great support effort. It makes all the difference, knowing that there is no problem so arcane and buried that it can't be fixed, unlike the newer rigs. I certainly learned a bit more about the K2, which was the point of all this. Al NH7O > Further testing here. Further testing here. I tried changing the control board MCU to the previous firmware version, and no change, so that is ruled out. But... I do notice that my keying wave form is not right. The rise time is very slow, about 50ms, the falling time is about right. And the keying sounds like it, very mushy. So there is something in that circuit, with the keying bandwidth mod installed, that has changed. [Elecraft] [K2] Erratic power control with base cw K2
I have a base K2 sn 1056, with a to b mods, including cw shaping mod, and the latest firmware. I have removed all options to ease troubleshooting. Turning the power control gives erratic power output, varying widely and randomly as I turn the control. If I turn the power control to max, then power is also max, but other positions are random. This happens on all bands, into 50 ohm load, and also using the antenna tuner option. Max power out is normal at about 15w, more or less. The rig works in all other aspects. Power supply shows 13.0 to 13.5 while transmitting. The display info smoothly follows the effects of turning the knob while receiving, so the info is making it into the CPU, and the pot is OK. If I push TUNE, then the power output level at the watt meter adjusts as I turn the control. But the level shown on the watt meter is quite variable with regards to the control setting. If I leave the control at half, one push of the TUNE will give 15w, and the next push will give 2w. Also the watt meter reading jumps to max intermittently as I turn the control back and forth from zero to max. The voltage from VRFDET is making it back to pin 2 of the CPU, and it's value reflects the level that I see at the output on the watt meter at R66. The voltage at VPWR is erratic when turning the power control, as is the voltage at VALC, but those two voltages seem to be about equal, as best I can measure. (No scope). The VALC at R98 on the RF board is the same as at Q8 on the control board, so that signal is making it. As I turn the control in TUNE, I see from around ~.4 volts to ~1.2 volt at 15 watts out. Higher voltage on VALC does make more output power, so that potion is OK. If I plug in the KSB2 board, then on SSB I can get what is apparently normal smooth power control, but the problem is still there in CW. Initial keying sometimes give HiCur readings. So the loop on CW is not working for some reason, and I am open to further suggestions. I have been reading posts about R98, which is at 270 ohms. Not sure if that applies here. tnx, Al NH7O __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] K2 10m sensitivity
I have just received a new old K2 here. It has most of the important mods, AtoB upgrade, and is working as well as it can, as best I am able to determine. The alignment is fine, and it puts out OK on all bands. I have not been able to find any posts about the sensitivity on 15m-12m-10m being not so great. On 40m-80m-160m it is what I would expect. 20m it's just OK with wider filters, but there is plenty of internal noise with the narrower filters. I don't have a microvolt source to get a precise reading. But with a 5 el yagi on 10m, band noise completely covers internal noise on my Yaesu. On the K2, I can hear the band noise, but the internal noise is rather more than I like. Even strong signals don't move the S meter much, and that is after I have tweaked the settings, and adjusted the AGC threshold. I know audio filtering will help with this. I also did the mod to increase the gain of the RF preamp. I wonder if anyone else sees the 10m sensitivity as a problem? Is there perhaps a wider bandwidth transistor to use in place of the 2n5109?
