[Elecraft] K3 Ground Loop Issues using Ameritron ARB-704

2009-06-02 Thread Alfred Frugoli
I've just gotten my K3 built and integrated into the shack about a week
ago. Operated WPX CW this weekend with GREAT success. Was very happy.

Tonight in setting up FSK, I was getting a lot of "AGN?" after my cq's.
Listening to my signal on a 2nd receiver, I realized that my signal had a
hum on it - basically sounded terrible. Tested in CW mode as well, and the
hum was also there (haven't dug out the mic yet for the dreaded SSB mode to
know if the hum was there as well, but I would suspect it would have been).
Tried changing a bunch of menu settings to no avail. Then I disconnected
everything from the back of the K3 except for the antenna, power and FSK
input. Beautiful clean signal. The hum reappeared when I connected the amp
keying line.

I've been using the Ameritron ARB-704 Amp Keying buffer, and even though
the K3 can handle the relay voltage on my AL-80 (the key voltage is not in
the AL-80 manual, but I believe it's 125v), I've kept in in line. However
this seems to be the item causing the hum. When I take it out of the line,
and connect the rig directly to the amp, no hum.

My shack is NOT well RF grounded, and things are not bonded together at this
point (that's a needed project - but the ARB-704 doesn't have a ground post
to connect to - I'd have to go directly under one of the case screws to
ground it).

Anybody else experience this? Am I correct in my deduction that the K3 key
out relay will handle the relay voltage on the AL-80? If so, I'll just
ditch the ARB-704 for now.

Thanks.

[Elecraft] Save Dual PB as filter preset or custom norm setting?

2009-06-04 Thread Alfred Frugoli
I'd like to utilize a narrow/wide filter pair for RTTY. However I want the
narrow filter to be a dual passband filter. Is there a way to store a dual
pb filter as a filter preset or a custom norm filter setting? Even better
would be a single button push (instead of a push turn) where holding the
xfil button to get out of dual bp would return the rig to the previous
filter setting, rather than what seems to be a default for RTTY of 500hz.

Thanks!

[Elecraft] 5 watt calibration fails - help

2010-03-27 Thread Alfred Frugoli
Hello everyone,

Putting together K3 SN 4094, and running into the following problem when
trying to complete the 5 watt transmitter calibration procedure from within
the K3 Utility. Please see text below for the response from the K3
Utility. Any thoughts? As you can see, I tried running the calibration
process a few times, and each time I reached the same result - although in
different places.

[Elecraft] ERR TXG when running 50 watt TX calibration procedure

2010-03-28 Thread Alfred Frugoli
Hello everyone again,

Thanks for the quick replies on the K3 Utility errors I was having last
night. 5W TX manual calibration worked just fine.

Now I've got my KPA3 installed, and when trying to run the manual 50 watt TX
calibration procedure, after going in to Tune mode (pressing and holding
XMIT/TUNE for 1 second), the display shows "- -" in VFO A and "0W" in VFO
B. When I press XMIT/TUNE again to exit from Tune mode, VFO B reads ERR
TXG. I have my FLTX set to FL1 ,which is the 2.7K filter, for all modes. I
have run the Synthesizer calibration procedure already, as well as the
Reference Oscillator calibration using Method 2 (zero-beating).

Thoughts?

[Elecraft] BCD voltage

2010-04-01 Thread Alfred Frugoli
Hello,

I'm working on wiring up a band decoder to the ACC port on the back of the
K3. I'm seeing 3V when a BCD pin is active. The rig is SN 4094. The
manual says that "older" rigs may need a pull up resistor. I wouldn't have
thought that a brand new out of the warehouse rig would have been an "older"
K3. Am I missing something?

Thanks.

[Elecraft] ERR TXG problem.

2010-04-17 Thread Alfred Frugoli
Hi David,

I ran into a similar problem a few weeks ago. Are you using the latest K3
Utility? Try using the manual calibration procedure in the K3 Manual. Does
that work? I had a similar problem that was related to an updated that the
K3 Utility needed. I think the latest K3 Utility is on the web site now
though.

Good luck.

Re: [Elecraft] Samelex Power Supplies with a K3

I have one I bought a few months ago to go with my new K3. Works great. I
do not notice any hash, and the fan noise hasn't bothered me yet (but then
again I'm usually running 2 rigs, 2 power supplies and 2 amps, all at the
same time. The PS fan is NOT the loudest thing in my shack by any means.

[Elecraft] [K3] K3NA on 5 pole vs 8 pole filters

2010-05-27 Thread Alfred Frugoli
Fellow Elecrafters,

I remember reading a comparison by I think K3NA on the differences between 5
pole and 8 pole filters that eventually lead me to stick with the 5 pole
filters. Does anybody know what I'm thinking of, because Google searches,
and Nabble searches of the Elecraft archives aren't turning anything up, and
I've gotten no response from direct contact with K3NA (maybe I have an old
e-mail).
