Re: [Elecraft] K3 Headphones
I've had Sennheiser HD400 for many years (long since out of production but there is a newer model). These are very light. I've also the Heil Proset noise cancellers. The Proset and any other can-style headphone I've ever used just kill my ears after a while, like in a contest. The HD400's are better but still, eventually after 4 hours or so I have to take them off. I bought a set of Sennheiser CX300-II earbuds on ebay new for $35, some special. I think they're regularly $50. These have excellent sound quality as one expects from Sennheiser. They're noise blocking, nearly as good as the Heil noise cancellers. And they completely solve the long term ear pain issue. I can wear them all day (or night) without any discomfort. I set the K3 AF Gain to Low and the AF LIM to 20. Highly recommended! -- 73 Art Allison, Colorado Whether you believe you can do a thing or not, you are right. --Henry Ford. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Maarten Stroke can mean many things. Stroke of a hydraulic piston. Stroke of an engine piston. Stroke as in medical condition. Stroke as in pull on the oars in a boat. Stroke of a pencil. English is obfuscatory. Stroke has been used on the bands for as long as I've been a ham which is many years. Anyone who calls you on it is him(her)self the idiot. As you know in English stroke is but one syllable. Portable is three (Port--a--ble), wasting lots of your time and effort to pronounce it. And adds absolutely nothing to intelligibility. Pleasecontinue to sign OZ Stroke PD2R. 73 Art K6XT, K6XT Stroke NH9 -- 73 Art Allison, Colorado Whether you believe you can do a thing or not, you are right. --Henry Ford. The last two weeks of May I will be staying in Denmark and of course I'll take my K3 with me. Normally there's not much time to play with the radio but during these two weeks of vacation I will have some time to have some fun on the bands. Now, it's not the first time I've been in OZ but recently I discovered that I may have pronounced the / incorrectly. During previous visits I used to say Oscar Zulu Stroke Papa Delta Two Romeo. But I noticed the NA stations pronounce the / as portable. After realizing that stroke means a very bad condition involving the loss of brain function, it sure sounds stupid. So I guess I should say Oscar Zulu Portable Papa Delta Two Romeo, am I right? I know it's a bit OT but I don't want to sound like an idiot anymore ;-) 73, Maarten PD2R __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] K3 Keying Up For A Split Second When Power Button, IsPushed (Tom W8JI)
It is not normal behavior for my K3. I have a Drake L4B with a soft key behind the radio. If by accident the amp is out of the stand-by mode and you turn on the K3, it will key the amp for a split second. Is this normal? Don't get me wrong, I try to put it in standby but every now and then I'll forget. That's normal behavior for the K3. I don't like it either, but a properly designed step-start should still be OK with just the quiescent current of the PA tubes so long as RF is not applied. The only problem would come in when the step-start and the radio both have issues. If the step-start isn't planned well, and blows a fuse or a resistor when starting under quiescent current loads, then the radio doing closing the relay line at power-on becomes a problem. As a suggestion you could easily build a time-delay start up for the amp, which it should have if simply closing the relay control line at amplifier power-on causes damage. You'd have to add a small relay and wire it in series with the relay control jack. My amplifiers start just fine at quiescent loads, so I don't worry (although what you observe annoys me too and I can see where it could cause step-start damage in some systems). 73, Tom __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] K3 dumb Q about PPM
Gents Lots of confusion about oscillator specs. Allow me to add more. Specs on TXCO's are given at specific conditions. Deviate from those conditions and the spec does not apply. In deviating conditions one must review the manufacturer's spec sheet to discover how the TXCO will respond. The PPM spec only refers to long term drift, as defined in the manufacturer's specifications. It has no bearing to short-term changes in room temperature as suggested in some of the posts. Again, see the manufacturer's specifications. This is exactly why the (for example) K3 has a TXCO alignment procedure. So that a picky user can adjust the TXCO exactly on frequency under a specific set of operating conditions. Deviate from the alignment condition, the TXCO will respond by deviating from perfect alignment. The need to control temperature change and remove heat is exactly why industrial and military electronics are often in cold climate controlled spaces where the temperature never varies and the carbon units wear sweaters. Lastly, for the newer folks, be happy. We hams used to be in the business of chasing each other up and down the bands as our oscillators wandered randomly about. Receiving station wanders one way, transmitting station wanders the other. Many newer folks may not even know what youp means. These days just about any rig worthy of the name newer than 20 years old is rock solid from turn on +1 minute. And quite a number, rock solid from turn on plus 10 seconds. Try that with the old Hallicrafters with the valve handwheel knobs where a sharp rap on the desk sent the rig five kHz up the band!
Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft Digest, Vol 71, Issue 43
RS-232 isn't going away any time soon. Witness the large number of USB to COM converters, the large number of mobo's available with COM port, and the huge installed base of equipment. Wayne wrote a paper on why the K3 uses COM vs. USB. I use at least two different varieties. One model from www.byterunner.com and one from www.lonetworks.com. The lonetworks.com unit is purported to understand baudot RTTY although I haven't tried it because I use the actual COM1 on my PC for FSK. Rig control on either of these converters is flawless. This is like the money deal or the electrical outlet deal. There is no such thing as too many ports. Not to say that USB isn't a good idea. It works fine, just like a COM port does, and connectorizing is more compact. OTOH USB cannot perform all the services the COM port does. Bearing the above in mind and rewriting the last part of the complaint below a bit: I bought a handicapped computer that doesn't have a COM port because this model is too cheap to include that feature. So I'm going to fault Elecraft for choice of IO port. 73 Art -- 73 Art Allison, Colorado Whether you believe you can do a thing or not, you are right. --Henry Ford. Re: [Elecraft] K3 options input sought
David The onboard tuner is pretty handy and fast tuning. I have a couple 1KW size outboard manual tuners but still use the K3's often. If you don't contest much and don't plan to record off the air the KDVR3 might be overkill. Last I heard, KDVR3 won't stream rx audio to an external device such as your PC's HDD. The tuner, btw, is only useful for impedance matching. Its an L section which will not attenuate harmonics. 73 Art -- 73 Art Allison, Colorado Whether you believe you can do a thing or not, you are right. --Henry Ford. [Elecraft] CW filters
Not sure how best to do this. My original K3 uses 250Hz 5 pole filters in main and sub rx. I love 'em. Now I've acquired a second K3 which came with a 400Hz 8 pole filter. Oh, what to do. 1. Put the 400 in Rig 1 main RX. Buy a second 400 for the sub RX to keep them the same for diversity (which I use all the time on 80 and 160). 2. Put the 400 in the main RX, leave the 250 in there for diversity, buy another 5 pole 250 for 2nd K3. 3. Don't do anything, the 8 pole 400 isn't that much better than the 5 pole 250's in actual combat. 4. Sell the 400, get an 8 pole 250, recycle to step 1 above. 5. Option I haven't considered yet. Re: [Elecraft] K3 - 'High Isolation Headphones'
I was using a Heil Proset noise cancelling. These headphones cancel just about everything. Amp noise, XYL, doors, barking dogsyou name it. But. After a couple hours or so my floppy ears start to notice they're being compressed into my skull. Ditto my Sennheiser HD400 headset except these are much lighter so it takes a bit longer to get that squeezed feeling. Seeking a solution I tried Sennheiser CX300-2 button phones, about $30. That is the solution for long term use! Noise blocking is excellent, just behind the ProSet. No squeezed ears. Excellent audio quality. They're a bit more sensitive than either headset so I turned the K3 to low audio. I also reduced the max audio clipping level in the K3. What a difference! Should have done this 30 years ago. 73 Art __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
