[Elecraft] Firmware update process stalled K3

2012-02-26 Thread Axel Kaiser

I wanted to install the latest firmware beta release (4.47).
The process started, on the K3 display MCU LD appeared, but after a while the
message appeared, that the update failed.
The K3 stayed in the MCU LD mode and the K3 utility showed that there is a
communication problem with the COM port.
Trying to reactivate the COM communication failed with all possible COM ports
my ELTIMA virtual port cable creates.
Turning the K3 on and off didn't change anything, the MCU LD mode stays on.
Also reinitializing the ports by turning the computer off and on again didn't
change a thing, I could not get the COM port communication started again.

Does anybody have an idea how to get back to normal without starting the EE
INIT procedure (loosing all parameters)?

Thanks in advance for your help!!

2012-02-26 Thread Axel Kaiser

Thanks Dick for your help! It did do the job, I had to disconnect mymicroham
microKeyer II , then it worked.
So reading the help files sometimes really helps!
Thanks again and

Yes, the firmware load was interrupted.

Go through the procedure described in K3 Utility Help, Troubleshooting, MCU
 Boot Loader.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 does not transmit (FSK) on lower bands?

2011-03-06 Thread Axel Kaiser

Thank you Greg, Joe and Richard, you solved my problem.
In fact, the DATA MD setting was different on the lower bands for some reason.
Actually I didn't know that this setting is band dependent.

I checked the manual again and didn't find any remark to this respect in the
Data Modes chapter.
Anyway thanks again, you've made my day!!! This reflector is a marvelous thing!

 Axel,

The K3 remembers the DATA submode separately for each band. Perhaps you
have the FSK D submode selected on the higher bands, but one of the
other submodes selected on the lower bands.

[Elecraft] K3 does not transmit (FSK) on lower bands?

2011-03-05 Thread Axel Kaiser

I am having problems with my K3 in transmitting RTTY on the lower bands (160m
-30m).

I am using MMTTY togetner with a microham microkeyerII. On the higher bands
(20m-10m) RTTY works fine with the mode setting on Data and having selected
FSK. But when I switch to the lower bands, the transmit LED will light, however
there is no FSK shifting, no tones are being sent and no tones can be heard in
the monitor either. Transmitting voice on the lower bands is working fine
though!

I checked the menu for any band dependencies but couldn't find any that would
apply to FSK transmission. Does anyone have an idea what I am doing wrong?

[Elecraft] RTTY filter for K3

2008-05-18 Thread Axel Kaiser

To all you filter aficionados,

first of all thank you very much for all your detailed answers to my original
question, which roofing filter ist best for RTTY operation of the K3. Lots of
very detailed and informative answers were given and even a general discussion
on this issue among several others was started. But to tell you the truth, I am
still somewhat uncertain, which filter to order with my K3.
One of my theory books about HF technology, modulation, bandwidth and so forth,
tells me, that the necessary bandwidth for a 170 Hz shift RTTY signal should be
around 320 Hz. Now some of you guys write, that you are using a 250 Hz filter
for RTTY operation. A 250 Hz filter though has this 250 Hz (ok, a few Hz more
in reality) bandwidth at - 6dB attenuation, which means that the actual
bandwidth at about 0 db is even less.
So my understanding for a 170 Hz shift RTTY operation is, to use a filter of at
least 400 - 500 Hz (at -6dB) in order to get all the information through the
filter. This I can confirm also with my current OMNI VI+ which does not allow
me to copy RTTY signals with a 250 Hz filter . So please, where is the point
which I am missing with the K3, that you can work weak RTTY signals with a 250
Hz roofing filter??

[Elecraft] RTTY Filter for K3

2008-05-15 Thread Axel Kaiser

Hi K3-folks,

What would be the best RTTY roofing filter for the K3? Is the 400Hz 8-pole
filter too small and the 500Hz 5-pole filter the better choice?

Thanks in advance for your answers.
