[Elecraft] BL2 Question
David, KC9EHQ wrote: Construct a 20 and/or 40 meter 1/2 wave dipole and feed it using standard TV twin-lead as my feedline (found in any hardware/home improvement store) Dave Don't know about the stores down there. However, Twin Lead is very hard to find, especially in the populated areas. TV receivers are heavy into coax usage for better of worse. Think about using mini coax and feed the antenna unbalanced. If you make a fan, dual band dipole, it will eliminate the AT and balun. A purest may want to install a few toroids at the center feed point to eliminate RF on the outer shield, but for QRP operation, I doubt that would be a problem. Don't wish to discourage you in buying a BL-2. They are a handy item to have but for this particular application it's not necessary, IMHO. [Elecraft] Looking for source for wire and fuses
Tom: I believe you are referring to a blade fuse which has been used in automobiles for the last 25 years. A good supply can be found at your local Wal-Mart store back in the auto supply section. Another good source are your Ham swap meets. Zip cord wire should be color coded (Red and Black) Stay away from the brown zip cord unless you color code the ends. your Ham swap-meets is again, a good source of this wire. You may be able to find it at one of the major amateur radio suppliers. Might be a good thing for Elecraft to stock. Have fun and good luck. [Elecraft] K2 Remote Control
Introducing the Elecraft T1 20-Watt Automatic Antenna Tuner and optional T1-FT817 Adapter Ever wish you had a pocket-sized, high-performance ATU to use with low-power 160 through 6-meter transceivers? The Elecraft T1 may be just what you've been waiting for. It's one-fourth the size of other compact ATUs, yet its 7-inductor, 7-capacitor L-network provides a wide matching range and can handle up to 20 watts SSB/CW and 10 watts AM/FM/digital. The T1 is the ultimate backpacking/HF Pack accessory, weighing only 5 ounces (0.14 kg) including its internal 9-volt battery. The T1 can be used with any 0.5-W to 20-W transceiver. This includes home-built rigs, kits, and commercial transceivers such as the FT817, IC703, Argonaut, SG2020, and many others. Users of rigs that have no built-in transmit metering will benefit from the T1's 3-LED, 5-level bargraph, which displays approximate power output at the touch of a button, as well as SWR during auto-tune. Coax-fed antennas such as dipoles, verticals, short whips, and beams will work with the T1, as well as random-wire antennas, with our without feedline. The T1 will allow most antennas to be used on multiple bands -- in some cases covering the entire HF through 6-meter range with a single wire. Balanced feedlines can be used with the aid of a low-loss balun such as our model BL1. The T1 always tries to achieve a 1.0:1 SWR -- it doesnt stop trying at 1.5:1 like many auto-tuners. And you wont even need to change modes to tune, since you can use SSB voice or a keyer as well as a constant carrier. Many L-C network settings are saved in the T1's EEPROM memory, providing re-tune times of typically 1 to 2 seconds. Other features include: - auto power-off and latching relays for long battery life - bypass mode - ATU information report (present L and C values, battery voltage, etc.) - low-battery warning - reverse-polarity protection - rugged enclosure - quick-reference guide on the front panel FT-817 Adapter (model T1-FT817) Our smart remote control cable for use with the Yaesu FT-817 offers the ultimate in antenna-tuning convenience. On any band change, a small microcontroller built into the cable sends band data from the FT-817 to the T1, which then recalls the appropriate per-band network settings. This means instant QSY without the need to transmit -- less QRM, less hassle. The T1's remote-control capabilities are fully documented in the owner's manual so that users of other transceivers can create their own T1 interface. (We may also offer adapter cables for other rigs in the future.) Pricing, Photos, and Further Information The T1 can be purchased factory assembled and tested for $159, or as a complete, easy-to-build kit for $135 (all surface-mount components are pre-installed, and there's no alignment or test equipment needed). The T1-FT817 remote control adapter is $49 (assembled only). Re: [Elecraft] WB3AAL Appalachian Trail 1 Jan 05
FYI Ron, there is a group called HF Pack that is very strong in Pedestrian mobile operation. both CW and SSB. Their various calling frequencies are listed athttp://www.hfpack.com/ Most of the members seem to be on SSB with their 817's (ugh) However, they do have an interesting web site established (IMHO). Sorry I responded to your post after you departed for the trail. I'll look for you on 20mHave fun.. Carry on K2Bill#973 Hello and Happy New Year, The temp is now in the 40's here in PA and is going up to 60's later. I have some things I have to do outside around the QTH but I can't pass up the Great weather. So I should be on the air around between 15:30 and 16:00 UTC. I will be at the pond on the Appalachian Trail near Strausstown, PA. The location is around 1 mile south of the Route 183 crossing of the AT. I will be using my K1 on 30 and 40 meters. Unfortunately I did not make my modifications to the four band board on my K1 yet so I will be using a SW20+ for 20 meters. I will start out on 14.060 to 14.065 in a clear spot. I will work 20 meters for about 30 to 45 minutes and then I will try 10.106 MHz. I will call CQ for a while, if no replies I will go to 7.040 to 7.045 MHz for 30 to 45 minutes. I am at the 401 QSO's from the Appalachian Trail. I have been going out on the AT every month to make a few QSO's since March 2000. 72 and Thanks, Ron Polityka WB3AAL www.wb3aal.com www.n3epa.org/ K1 - SN 01011 K2 - SN 01392 ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] 80m ECN?
Has anyone given consideration for a ECN on 80m some evening? Carry on Bill_Harris Well ... radio gods just don't seem to favor a path between here and wherever Kevin is located. A number of checkins were strong, but Kevin was very (very) weak again on 20, and it took several checkins before I could even copy his call. Noise from all sources was blessedly low too. Needless to say, 4W from my KX1, even into a modest beam, was not likely to be heard. I doubt the K2 would have made any difference, since he was equally weak on it. As soon as Eric/Wayne come up with the K2 mod that will take a signal from below the noise and bring it up to Q5 copy, I'll buy it! Might be some quantum electronics thing, however, requiring liquid nitrogen for cooling. 40 for ECN has been nil in recent weeks. I'll probably cool it on ECN until closer to the vernal equinox, or maybe wait for more sunspots. 73 and happy new year to all, Fred K6DGW Auburn CA CM98lw ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. RE: FW: [Elecraft] RF build up
As you well know Ron, that heating method works great on any closed loop antenna. I still have my old 304t_ filament transformer around for such occasions. It's good for 5 vac. @ 100 amps. Does a good job on conductive pipes that may freeze up which is normally not a problem here in Western Washington. Carry-on K2Bill#973 Lo' these all-too-many-winters ago there were actual reports of Hams using folded dipoles with open wire line in heavy ice/snow regions. As y'all probably know, a folded dipole has a direct current continuity across the feeders, since it's essentially a dipole with an extra wire running parallel to the dipole radiator and connected at each end. If a dangerously heavy ice coating appeared, they'd connect the feeders to a variable power source and allow enough current to flow to heat the wires and melt the ice. Took a while, but it beat trying to splice and raise the antenna again in mid-winter. Being a California Boy in those days - Southern California at that - I never really had any need to test the idea first-hand. While others were snowed and iced-in up to their end-insulators, we were praying for a few drops of rain before the dry season resumed in the spring. Re: [Elecraft] mmfdpf change over
Good morning Steve: I'm interested where you got your source of information on the metric change over from mmfd to pf. I thought the Germans were using Hertz back in the 30's. If my memory serves me correctly, that was slightly before the transistor came on the scene. Appreciate any info you can direct me too. 73's Merry Xmas Bill_Harris uuF was used to spec cap values in tube equipment. The introduction of semiconductors forced a conversion to use the 'pico' prefix. Same with hertz. Tube gear measured frequency in cycles per second. The transistor changed all of that.
