Re: [Elecraft] REFLECTOR ARCHIVES
Hi Chris, I had the same problem this morning. I tried to search the archives for D104 to see how to wire a D104 without an amplifier. I remembered seeing it there somewhere. I got no hits, I know D104's have been mentioned at least 50 times over the years. Then I searched for crystal, as in crystal element.. I got only 7 hits, The word crystal I am sure has been mentioned more than 7 times over the years. I sent a quick e-mail to the webmaster for the Elecraft website. Bob K6GGO Chris Page wrote: Does anyone know why you cannot fully search the Elecraft Forum Daily List Archives on the Elecraft web-site, please, or am I doing something wrong? I recall seeing a message a week or so ago when somebody else had a similar problem, but I don't recall reading an answer to the question asked about the archives. I find the searchable archives to be an excellent source of suggestions and ideas when one has problems. [Elecraft] I'm Stumped- need some help from the group
Hi Guys, I was up late last nite trying to solve this thing and failed, it really has me stumped. It may be obvious to one of you guys that know the radio better than I. Here goes: Last weekend, I made some ssb contacts in the WPX contest and all was well. Good signal reports and my audio was reported in good shape as well. Then on Tuesday I attempted to check in to a local 80 meter net and after several attempts with no responders. A guy comes on and says, "Hey K6GGO, your 500 Hertz high, check your RIT". Well, I checked my RIT and my XIT and they were both off. So after messing with this thing all week I am throwing up my hands and asking for help. Here is the data I've collected: 1) I performed Wayne's procedure for adjusting the 4 mhz master oscillator (C22). After I adjusted C22, I zero beat WWV and the display reads 1.53 2) I measured the output frequency of the transmitter with my frequency counter and it matches the displayed frequency. 3) Last night I quickly went through the Pll reference oscillator range test, VCO test, VCO alignment, BFO test, and then ran the VFO linearization. Still no Joy! 4) Both the xit and rit appear to be working normally and are off. 5) Both VFO's are set for the same frequency and are not set for split operation. Its as if the receiver and the transmitter are operating on different frequecies 500 hz apart (receiver lower) and the display shows only the transmitter frequeny. I hope this makes sense! This is probably going to be a button or something in the wrong position causing me endless embarassment. What do you guys think? Re: [Elecraft] KAT1 (K1) & end-fed halfwave wire antenna
Hi Mike, Another option is to wind a transformer on a toroid with a 3:1 turns ratio which will give you a 9:1 impedance transformation. If your antenna has a high impedance, which an end fed half wave will naturally have, the transformer will drop the impedance down into the range of your auto tuner. The other advantages of this are, on other bands where your antenna impedance is lower your impedance will still be matchable for your tuner. Also, if you ground the low end of the primary and the secondary windings of the transformer, it should make your antenna quieter in terms of noise. I read somewhere that it makes your antenna less attractive to lightning by not having that positive static charge on it, but I am not sure about that part. I have an end fed half wave which I like, but I have a homebrew tuner. 73, Bob K6GGO Mike Markowski wrote: The other day I posted an antenna question about making a K1 antenna that avoids halfwave multiples (& thanks again to the guys who replied offlist). From the calculations in that note and some modeling by another op it seems the ~18m/60' is probably the length to try there. But end-fed halfwave antennas have some advantages, especially the fact that as a voltage fed antenna they have less of a need for a low impedance ground to keep rf losses low. On the other hand, they offer very high impedance to the tuner. The KAT1 manual says to look out for "rf problems" at exact half wavelengths but doesn't come out and say if it can or can't handle it (even if just at certain ranges of length). A longtime ham told me some ATUs used to have a switch to move a cap to one end of the matching network or another to offer a wider matching range. So if the KAT1 can handle the impedance, great. If not, maybe I can put a coil in series and tap it at the 50 Ohm point of the coil. I'm not sure if it's worth the effort, especially since it'd be nice to keep portable ops as simple as possible. But if there's a noticeable performace increase... Has anyone tried either method? (That is, direct connection of halfwave end-fed or tapping an inductor.) Thanks for any ideas. 73, Mike ab3ap ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. Re: [Elecraft] near band edge?
Hi Ian, I think it is about 3 khz. So I never go closer than 1.5khz. I suppose if you were on upper side band cw you could cosy right up to the lower edge of the band and the inverse with lower side band on the upper edge but I have never been sure enough to get that close. I am sure some one will either confirm or correct my answer if it is wrong. [Elecraft] Crimping Tool
Hi Gang, I am looking for a crimping tool for putting Pl-259, BNC and SMA connectors onto RG-58, RG-141 maybe even 316 type coax. It will primarily be used for making test cables for my workbench right now. However, it would be nice if it did RG-8 as well. I realize I can just Google "crimpers" and get a million choices. I am looking for first hand experience here. I don't mind paying a few extra bucks for quality. What have you guys found to be the best for a reasonable price? [qrp-tech] Crimpers Revisited
Hi Guys, Let me start by thanking every one who responded to my request for a source for good coax crimpers. Lots of good choices at various price points. I noticed that some crimpers were listed with dyes or jaws with no coax designation just three digit dye sizes like .148, .259 or .291 or whatever. These are obviously the diameter of the closed jaw after it has ratcheted to its tightest position. I started thinking, how would you select the right size dye for a random piece of coax. I have a set of digital calipers. would I measure the OD of the sheild or the plastic outside cover, or the dielectric and add some magical number like twenty thousanths of an inch. I have used crimpers thousands of times on various jobs and usally there is a set of crimpers with RG-316, or whatever, written in felt pen on the handle and you used them without a second thought. Whats the correct way to figure it out or does it change with every connector coax combo. Sorry for the slightly off topic use of bandwidth, but I have never heard it discussed before. [Elecraft] K2 display failure
Hi Gang, I have been tolerating an intermitant problem with the display on my K2 for several months now and finally I've decided to dig in and fix it. Here is the problem, After powering up the radio, the LCD display will go blank. Sometimes after 5 minutes , sometimes after 45 minutes. The S-meter still works fine and the audio from the radio seems ok. I can change frequencies and I get the expected sounds from the speaker. When I first started experiencing this , I merely powered the radio off and then on and the display returned to normal operation. However, now the problem is happening with greater frequency. Sometimes recently, I sit down and turn on the radio I will get no LCD display and I can power it on and off 10 or 15 times in a row and still no display. I can come back 10 minutes later and get the proper display on the first power up. Also sometimes when I change bands the display will only partially change, in other words the right hand side of the display doesn't change only the first few digits of the left side change. Many other peculiar anomalies, too numerous to mention, have presented themselves recently. Here is the problem, I cant figure out a way to get a meter in the various places that might shed some light on this problem while the radio is in a failed condition. Short of disassembling the radio and tack soldering some enamel wire to various strategic points in the circuit, reassembling the radio, waiting for a failure, to make voltage measurements and thereby make a reasonable guess as to where the failure might be. Has any one seen this problem before or have an idea on a good way to chase it? [Elecraft] SWR Question
Hi Guys, I put up Bobtail Curtain antenna for 20 meters for the CQ DX contest this afternoon. It is fed at the center vertical element. Here is the problem. It requires a matching network (tank circuit) at the feed point. So I took my MFJ-269 antenna analyzer out to the feedpoint and tuned the antenna. I got it to 1.1 to 1. I then went inside and found that I have a 3.9 to 1 swr measured both with the analyzer and the internal wattmeter on my K2. I have never measured feed point impedance before I always just tuned antennas by measuring SWR at the transmitter. Now, I feel like the guy in the old Chinese proverb with two wristwatches and never knowing what time it is! I added some ferrite beads at the feedpoint to ensure that it isn't common mode currents on the outside of the coax sheild causing this. I always thought that SWR doesn't change along a transmission line. What is causing this I wonder, and should I just tune the antenna for lowest SWR at the transmitter regard less of feedpoint SWR? [Elecraft] Sweepstakes
Hi Guys, I, like probably alot of you, have been doing some casual contesting this weekend. Once again, I am amazed at how bad of a contester I am. It isn't my rig or antenna. I have a K2/100 and a decent antenna. When I call someone they almost always respond after the first call. My cw skills are pretty good I can exchange contest info at around 30wpm if I have to, although I run between 22 and 25wpm most of the time. I try not to get distracted, another words I try to stay in front of the radio. So I feel as if I should be, at least, competitive. But, it happens every time. I sit down, eagerly awaiting the start of the contest, ready to do battle, and get slaughtered. Within an hour or so I am hopelessly behind. After 4 or 5 hours it is a joke. after 8 or 10 hours every station I work has 600 contacts! Some of these guys are averaging a contact a minute OVER 8 HOURS! I'm not mad, I am just amazed. My best contact rate was about 30 an hour and that was only for a couple of hours.I usually run a contact every 3 or 4 minutes. So after a while I get discouraged and start getting up and watching football for a few minutes or something else and then I really fall behind. I don't mind not winning, but I am getting clobbered by every one I work by a factor of 7 or 8. I have to wonder, am I really that bad? The funny thing is, by the time the next contest rolls around. I am sitting in front of the radio, eagerly ready to do battle...The lions and Christians come to mind except the Christian weren't willing participants. 73, Bob K6GGO ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] RFC 15 miniature?
Hi Folks, I am building #5930 and I'm at the point of installing C91, C88 and RFC 15 on the bottom of the rf board at U4. I have 4 green bodied and one tan bodied 100 uH choke, but the tan bodied one is pretty close to the same size as the green ones, if any thing a little bigger. I have no miniature chokes at all I'm sure I can solder it to the indicated location, but is this something I should be concerned about?
