[Elecraft] Antennas for K1 field use

2009-07-11 Thread Bob Jones
I agree that random wires and fishing poles are as good as most
antennas in the field but a PAC12, or homebrew version of the same,
needs no other supports and is compact and light. It's an ideal beach
antenna, where salt water helps minimise ground losses, and I've had
plenty of transatlantic QSOs with the PAC12 and 3W from a K1 and KX1.
At least for these circumstances, it's a good compromise. Beaches tend
to be short of trees!

[Elecraft] Battery for K1/KX1

2009-07-11 Thread Bob Jones
I recently found what appears to be an excellent battery for the KX1
and K1 in the field:

It's a very compact lithium battery pack rated at 12V 3.5Ah - just a
little smaller than the KX1 footprint.

I have not used it over many re-charge cycles yet, or measured its
performance but it does give several hours' operation with the KX1 and
is a great deal lighter and easier to carry than an SLA type. The
charger that comes with it looks cheap but works. The battery itself
is encased in a metal box with on/off switch. I don't notice any heat
when it's being charged.

I have no commercial ties with the guy selling these on eBay and I
take no responsibility if you buy one and have any problems. Mine
works just fine and I thought it may be of interest to other QRP
enthusiasts.

Details are here: http://www.tinyurl.com/QRPbattery

[Elecraft] KPA-800 etc.

2009-05-18 Thread Bob Jones
I wonder if Elecraft has ever considered doing an OEM deal with
another amp maker? SPE, makers of the Expert 1K-FA might be a good
candidate. Some packaging re-design to match the K2/K3, together with
software changes for integrating the amp tightly with the Elecraft
radios, could satisfy many of us whilst avoiding much more up-front
development cost, or the delays and costs associated with approvals
from the various regulatory authorities. I run all Elecraft radios,
with the exception of an IC7000 for mobile, so I make this suggestion
as a big fan of the company. I would not wish to see product or
service standards compromised, but when it comes to these long-awaited
amps, maybe it's time for a different approach, or a clear statement
from Elecraft that the company does not intend to be in the amp
business for the foreseeable future.

Re: [Elecraft] KX1 - very quiet on 30m and 20m

2009-03-19 Thread Bob Jones
Don,

thanks for that information.

Here's what I have. TX appears fine. With 12.3V supply I get the
following output: 80m 3.3W; 40m 2.9W, 30m 3.8W, 20m 3W. All measured
by an Oakhills Labs QRP meter and a 50 Ohm dummy load.

The RX seems to have a problem. I have done a careful check of all
trimmer settings.

Measuring across the volume control (all controls fully clockwise);
XG2 set to 50 microvolts (battery checked!); Fluke 175 true RMS meter
(by a lucky coincidence):

40m: 163mV with earbuds connected; 185mV without
20m: 140mV with earbuds connected; 158mV without

Leaving the earbuds in, I then tried injecting the XG2 directly on the
junction of L6 and the top of the RF gain pot. The difference in audio
level is dramatic, particularly on 20m, but I still don't get anywhere
near your figures:

40M: normal antenna input 163mV; direct to top of RF gain pot 275mV
20m: normal antenna input 140mV; direct to top of RF gain pot 550mV -
getting closer!

Other checks I've done:
- Made sure that the break in the PCB and subsequent link is OK for
the addition of the KXB3080
- Checked L6 for continuity
- Checked connections to KXB3080 - and ensured that A B are as shown
in the manual i.e. B goes nearest to T1.
- Checked all voltages on U6 - within spec
- Checked connections of T2 and re-soldered joints (this was supplied
by the Mychael)
- Checked L3 is the later version with the right number of turns

This feels like it may be a problem with the pin diode switches, but
that still doesn't really explain why I can't get anywhere near your
0.8V figures across the audio pot.

 Bob,

OK, I finished the KX1 up to the point where I am able to give you
 some numbers.
With a 50 uV input at 7040 from my XG2 signal generator, I find
0.866 volts measured across the AF Gain control (control set to
maximum) with a high impedance load at the headphone jack. If I
plug in headphones (Sony MDR series), the voltage drops to 0.836
 volts.
Of course, the AGC should be active which will keep the voltage down
a bit. The KX1 has the KXB3080 option installed, and the receiver
front end is a little more sensitive than either the original KX1 or
 with the KXB30 installed.

With a 1 uV input, I read 38 to 40 mV at the same point - AGC should
not be as active at that level.

The voltage readings were obtained with a Fluke True RMS reading DMM.

 Bob,

I can't give you a measurement number right away, I do not have a
working KX1 here at the moment, but that value may be possible
 tomorrow or Friday.
If you do not hear quite a loud signal with the 50 uV output from
the XG2 (or XG1 with a 20 meter crystal) - with the RF Gain at
full clockwise and the AF Gain between 25 and 35% of rotation, then
 there is something wrong.

How is the transmit power output? If that is OK, then the low pass
filter is likely OK, and you might want to look at T2.

The KX1 audio is not super strong, and having good volume does
depend on using sensitive headphones. If your headphones do not
have an sensitivity rating greater than 108 dB/mW, then your
headphones may be the major problem, see the KX1 manual page 62.

It works on all bands but 30m and 20m require the volume control

the recommended checks and everything appears to be fine.

Having read the previous posts on 'low audio' there's an element
of subjectivity regarding what this means.

Does anyone know of a definitive measurement I can make to see if
this radio is working as well as it should?

For example, I have the XG1 and can inject a 14.060 MHz signal at
1 microvolt or 50 microvolts. With the bandwidth set to maximum,
what level of signal should I expect on the input or output of the
audio amplifier, or at any other point in the circuit?
 Any advice gratefully received.

[Elecraft] OT Apple iMac

2008-06-20 Thread Bob Jones

Hi Tom

I use an iMac in a similar set up to yours - with the lovely little
Bluetooth keyboard etc.

Go to 'Control Panels' (when in Windows)
Select 'BootCamp'

One of the tabs will give you the option to assign F keys to the
application - can't remember which one, and I'm traveling at present.

Works with HRD and N1MM.

[Elecraft] K3 wish list - option to turn off display

2008-04-27 Thread Bob Jones

I increasingly like to operate remote, especially when traveling.
This can sometimes mean that the rig is turned on for several days.
I have some concern about burn-out of the LCD display in areas where
it remains unchanged for long periods.
Maybe this is an unjustified worry, but it would be good to have the
option to simply turn off the display when using remote operation, or
even when operating the rig from a PC in the shack.

[Elecraft] RS 232 connection failure

2007-08-17 Thread Bob Jones

Hi

my K2/100 Nr 5336 has fallen out with my PC - they've stopped talking
to each other. I use microHAM's USB device router and a number of
serial to USB adapters, all of which have worked fine until now. The
same adapters work perfectly with my Icom rig but I get no response
when the PC polls the K2. I use VQLog for general logging and
Writelog for contests - neither will now work with the K2. Done the
obvious stuff - checking that the port is switched on at the K2 and
checking all the connections on the DB9 adapter lead. I also use the
KAT100 and have tried with it connected and disconnected - no
difference.
Any ideas on where I can start looking for the fault would be very
welcome.

[Elecraft] HF Amplifier

2007-01-22 Thread Bob Jones

Hello Jean-Francois

I suggest you take a look at the Expert 1K-FA from SPE: http://
www.linear-amplifier.com. I was waiting for the Elecraft amp then got
impatient and bought one of these.

This is a fully automatic amplifier that will work with any rig - it
will drive to about 2/3 full power with my K2 in low power mode, but
I seem to remember that there may be FCC issues with that kind of gain?

It does use relays for QSK but they are not very loud.

It's a very portable amp too - and even comes with its own carry bag.

[Elecraft] Sending CW from WriteLog

2006-10-22 Thread Bob Jones
I have my K2 connected to Writelog and can read frequency through Com
4 but I can't send CW from the program via the same port (this is the
arrangement I use for my FT1000MP). Is the K2 capable of this
function or do I need a different arrangement. As a Mac user for 20-
odd years, I'm afraid that anything PC-related is still largely a
mystery to me - so apologies if it seems like a dumb question!

[Elecraft] Receiver overload on 40m

2006-02-27 Thread Bob Jones
I've recently completed K2 5336 but only today connected a properly
resonant antenna on 40m.
The results surprised me. With the pre-amp on the receiver suffers
from serious overload and intermodulation and 40m - a problem that
does not occur with the same set up on my FT1000MP. I've played
around with AGC and RF gain settings but it is pretty much unusable
with the pre-amp switched on. Both the FT1000MP (with no
attenuation) and the K2 (with the pre-amp switched on) register S9
for 50 microvolts signal input, so I'm assuming (perhaps wrongly?)
that they have comparable sensitivity under these conditions. I know
I'm getting sufficient sensitivity for the band conditions with the
pre-amp off, but the apparent poorer performance of the K2 puzzles
me, particularly as other independent tests have indicated that it
should be better than the FT1000 with respect to strong signal handling.

Any suggestions?

[Elecraft] K2 QSK

2006-02-19 Thread Bob Jones
K2 5336 is up and running with a pile of European and transatlantic contacts
on 10W during the first evening on 3.5MHz. I'm delighted with the rig in
every respect except one. It's described as full QSK but doesn't come close
to offering the performance of a Ten Tec in this respect - although it beats
my FT1000MP with its clacking relays hands down! Are there any mods to make
this rig true QSK without upsetting the keying waveform?

[Elecraft] QSK

2006-02-19 Thread Bob Jones
Thanks for all the comments guys. I may have unrealistically rosy memories
of using Ten Tec gear but as I recall the QSK sounded very little from the
sidetone when not transmitting - and I guess my definition of true QSK is
just that. By the way, my T-R was set to 0.01 - it was better on the ears
than 0.00. Anyway, I'm being picky - the rig works great and the only
problems building it were down to sometimes being too lazy to read the
instructions properly! Onto the other modules...
