Here go es. Oliver, Norton, as well as many other anti-malware programs use different techniques to try to protect you. Some are known anti-virus definitions, or heuristic analysis, or looking to see how many other users of their software have downloaded the particular file you are downloading. Norton will err on the side of caution, and quarantine a file if it does not have a known "reputation" as safe. When you try to open the file, you will get a small warning box in the bottom right of the screen that says it has been removed by Norton. Click on "View Details" within this box. This will bring up another window that shows that it has been quarantined. Within this box, you will see a button that says "More Options"- From here, you can tell Norton to Restore the file. Re: [Elecraft] Tracking Upgrades with the K3 Utility?
Unfortunately Bob, It's not feasible to have the K3 utility track and report all of the possible mods that may have been made to an earlier K3. Some of them involved simple component changes or additions that would not be visible to any firmware or software. To keep track of this on my early K3, s/n 559, I printed out the mod instructions or the option install instructions and noted the rig s/n and the date it was installed or the mod performed. I have these going back to 2008 of all the updates I have done on this rig. I know it is a bit late for that for you, but. You could download all the updates that have come out since your rig was produced, and do the same- just note the date that each update was verified as done. Interesting "wish list" for a fantasy KX2, Jay. Elecraft has some great design folks, but... you'd have to give on that size "requirement" to stand a chance of ever seeing the others. I think so... (a dream). I have a K1 now, and have had a few of them in the past. There can only be 1 band board in at a time, although the K1 will remember the VFO calibration for all the bands, across the boards you have. The only time this is an issue is if you have two different modules with the same band, like 40/30/20/15 on a 4 band board, and 40/17 on a 2 band board. Early on, I had the same problem after installing a 250 Hz filter. the problem ended up being a coupling cap on the circuit board with no solder on one end. I was able to find it, and touch it up myself. Mine was a fairly early unit (s/n 559). [Elecraft] Possible solution: K1 with a strange XFIL problem...
Yes I had this exact problem on one I repaired in July of 2012. It was traced to a short between the RIT/XIT switche to a trace on the board, where the switch lead had been bent over by the original builder before soldering. I corresponded with Don Wilhelm about this. Though he didn't provide the solution, our conversation led me to the tests that found it. Copied below is a repost of my last message to Don, after I resolved it. I don't recall if I posted this to the reflector or not. In any event, It may help someone in the future. I have a photo of the offending switch pin connection, if anyone wants it. Bruce Beford, N1RX Hi, Don. You may recall that I posted recently to the list about a strange problem with a K1. I resolved it today, and wanted to share the results with you. Here's a copy of my original post: OK, folks. Time to put on your thinking caps... I just purchased a used K1. Has NB, ATU and 4 band board, set for 7/10.1/14/21 MHz. All appears to be operating normally, except... When cycling through the crystal filter bandwidths from FL1-FL3, once FL3 is reached, all buttons become unresponsive. The VFO readout still works, but the MCU will not respond to any key presses. The filter does actually switch to the narrowest setting, based on the audio response. Cycling the power returns the rig to normal operation (on FL1), and all works fine again until trying to use FL3. About the only other anomaly I notice is what seems to be a louder pop in the speaker when switching in RIT or XIT than I remember from my last K1. I have not yet begun any troubleshooting (except for a full reset). Just thought I would poll the collective wisdom here before digging in. Actually, I'll be getting ready for Lobstercon over the next couple of days, so I don't know how much time I'll be able to commit until after the weekend. You and I both suspected a problem with the MCU, as there should no other circuitry involved, except the DAC and EEPROM. You also suggested perhaps replacing those ICs while in there. Fortunately, I have a friend who allowed me to borrow his working K1. Swapped the entire Front Panel board, mine works fine with his board. I then took his MCU chip and put it in my board, still have the problem. So, the problem was on my FP board, but not the MCU. One thing I did notice was a ticking noise in the audio with no antenna connected, almost like ignition noise in a vehicle, when using my board FP board but not when using my friend's. The ticking would disappear when I went to FL2. Ahh, another clue... I then decided to remove the DAC from my board and see what happens. Lo, The unit would now switch properly, FL3,FL2,FL1 and back to FL3 OK. Of course, it was not actually switching the filter bandwidth with the DAC out. I now had a pretty load, almost moterboating noise in the audio. I decided to ground what was the XFIL/TONE output pin of the DAC (pin 1) to see if it would quiet the audio. It did, BUT- it activated the RIT! Wait a minute- there should be no connection between the two but, there was. Upon extra careful inspection, I found that one lead on the RIT/XIT switch was not inserted through the board by the original builder. It was bent over, and was contacting pin 5 on J1 (the XFIL/TONE signal). The "moaterboating" I heard was actually the MCU driving the LCD pin and polling the input for the switch. This was not noticeable when the DAC was holding this line at a steady DC voltage. So, what was happening was when the DAC output it's lowest voltage for FL1 (about 1.6 volts), it would tickle the input pin on the MCU for the WPM+/FILTER switch. I believe the MCU would think the switch was being held in, therefore no other switches would work, until the unit was powered off. An original symptom (which I didn't recognize at the time) was when I noted that the RIT/XIT button seemed to generate an audio pop when used. That's because it was grounding the XFIL/TONE signal line. I reworked the switch connection, and all is fine now. I have attached a photo of the offending pin (not a good shot, but shows the connection in question). I thought you might like to hear about this one. Thanks for being a "sounding board", Don. I appreciate it. 73, Bruce, N1RX __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

Re: [Elecraft] OT KX3 - Yahoo Group
Sadly, The KX3 Yahoo group has taken a very bad turn. It was originally started, when the KX3 was initially announced, by a very responsible group owner who had a very lenient moderation policy. Unfortunately, he has turned the day-to-day operation over to two other moderators that prefer to remain anonymous. They have instituted a Draconian zero-tolerance policy of any mention of either commercial products, or links to any other resource pages. They claim to want all KX3 related material to be copied to the Yahoo Group, rather than links to other sites. This is unworkable, as only those who actually own the information can post it there. It also make maintenance of updates unworkable. For instance, I posted a link to a website that was still maintaining an archive copy of NaP3 software (N8LP), after development of NaP3 ceased. For this, I was placed on moderation (unannounced and unexplained). Unfortunately, the implementation of these new policies has resulted in the banishment of many, often without explanation. Sad to say, this once very useful Group is now much less so. This would provide not only the protection against abrupt power failure that you seem to seek, but also provide some additional operating time in the event of power fail. Those UPS units are designed to run for only a handful of minutes, while a computer system shuts down. Re: [Elecraft] K1-4 4 band version gone? (Hand SMT---Never)
While I understand this mindset; I for one, am grateful that there are SMT-based kits available. I enjoy building both thru-hole and SMT based projects. In many cases, thru hole equivalents are not available for some components. I have built many all-SMT projects, notably those offered by KD1JV,ad formerly NJQRP (now Midnight Design Solutions), among others. No, they are not for everyone. But- I am glad they are offered for those of us who can and do enjoy building them. It is not nearly as difficult as some seem to believe it to be. Different techniques are required, that's all. Re: [Elecraft] K1-4 4 band version gone?
Thanks for taking the time to reply with the details, Wayne. It's a shame. I (and many others) feel the K1 has some advantages over the KX1, such as the analog VFO, higher output power, and 4-pole filtering. It's internal antenna matching unit also offers more tuning range than the KX1. I have also built a 160m/80m 2 band board for mine. I have built and own all the Elecraft rigs, and each has provided great enjoyment, each has it's strong points. Time marches own, it would be wonderful if a 4-band redesign solution could be found, using modern components. Perhaps a pre-built, pre-tuned SMD based board. But, I imagine the potential sales volume would not justify the costs. Too bad. Bruce/N1RX -Original Message- From: Wayne Burdick [mailto:n...@elecraft.com] Sent: Thursday, July 17, 2014 2:43 PM To: Bruce Beford Cc: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: K1-4 4 band version gone? Hi Bruce, The 4-band module requires extremely low-temperature-coefficient trimmer capacitors because of its narrow-band pre-mix and RF band-pass filters. The last source for these exotic trimmers dried up recently. A redesign using higher-TC trimmers might be possible, but the filters would end up being triple-tuned, which would force the use of SMD components throughout, and tuning the filters would then be very difficult without a spectrum analyzer. Sales volume for the K1 has decreased in recent years due to the KX1 (which is smaller and has a DDS VFO), and the KX3 (which covers all bands, all modes, with up to 12 W output and has a much more capable auto tuner, nicer user interface, etc.). So the cost of a redesign wouldn't be recovered. That said, for the time being we're continuing to offer the two-band version and the other options (KAT1 ATU, KBT1 battery pack, etc.). The K1 is one of our "full" kits, and has a bit of a fan club of its own. [Elecraft] [OT] Elecraft's Linux utilities - somewhat OT, or maybe not
I don't believe people load Linux just so they can spend time getting a computer to run Elecraft utilities. The use of Linux appears to be more of a philosophical endeavor than a strictly performance one. It's not too often that I hear someone say that they run Linux because they can't get a similar app on Windows. Windows runs on around 90% of the worlds desktops and laptops. OSX something less than 9%, Linux (all distros) less than 2%. One of the reason for Window's dominance is the (generally) simplified user experience, coupled with the broad software/comparable hardware availability. The two sides feed on and promote each other. i.e. a larger installed base of OS users makes for an attractive market for software/hardware creators. Of course, it also makes it a fertile hunting ground for malware creators, too... (My only post in this thread...) Re: [Elecraft] Activity in ancient 15-meter novice band (21.1 MHz)
Yes, 15M was also my favorite band as a Novice. It may be "ancient" but it's still active, and still an official band segment for Novice/Techs (21.025-21.200 MHz). The same goes for the Novice/Tech segment of 40M (7.025-7.125). There is a lot of activity at the top end of the old Novice segment of 40M. You can often find relatively slow code CW QSOs from 7.120-7.125. Stop in and work these stations! There are many who frequent these segments. I know many FISTS and SKCC members who hang out in these areas. Some other folks are working on getting their code speed up. Not because they _have to_, but because they want to. I know a few "lifetime" Novices, that are active, but have no intention of upgrading. Yes, there are still Novice class licensees. The FCC does not issue new Novice (or Advanced) class licenses, but they can still be (and often are) renewed. I didn't expect activity to spread upward that far, but sure enough, blips appeared on the PX3 above 21.1, and I was able to make a quick QSO with WK1Q using 12 W (KX3 barefoot). This brought back a lot of memories. 21.1-21.15 was my favorite place to hang out back in the 1970s, when I was crystal-controlled on transmit, using a Heath HW-16. In those days I had a home-rolled 2-element 15-meter yogi made from 1/2-inch steel pipe and 2x4s. Must have weighed 40 pounds. Fortunately, my patient stepfather knew that getting that antenna up would keep me out of trouble (I was 15 at the time). Re: [Elecraft] K3 issues - new modules installed - 250 Hz filter, DVK, KXV3A
I forgot to mention- the DSP error messages- you had to disassemble the front panel assembly to install the DVK. You may not have that stack properly re-assembled, leading to some of the DSx error messages. You may have to remove the front panel assembly again, to inspect your work there. 73, Bruce N1RX -Original Message- From: Elecraft [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Mark Pride via Elecraft Sent: Friday, May 23, 2014 7:22 AM To: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: [Elecraft] K3 issues - new modules installed - 250 Hz filter, DVK,KXV3A Hello all, Ran into some issues with the K3 after adding some new boards. Re: [Elecraft] K3 issues - new modules installed - 250 Hz filter, DVK, KXV3A
Hi, Mark. Most of these error messages relate to the second RX. I assume you have the second receiver, and had to remove it, in order to install the 250 filter in the main receiver. If that is the case, you may not have gotten the 2nd RX module properly reseated on the main board. Another error you report, TXF, relates to the transmit filter selected for the particular mode. Did you use the K3 utility to confirm and reconfigure your filter settings after installing the new options? Also, did you activate the new options in the menus, and then power cycle the radio? All the error messages are listed in the back section of the K3 manual. I am sure with some re-inspection, reseating, and configuration verification with the K3 utility, you will be able to get it right. Some time ago, I had a K1 that needed a repair, including the backlight. With all due respect, you already received the answer here. Yes, you can connect the Signal Link to the front panel mic connector. Re: [Elecraft] Px3 or KPA100?
Jim, The KX3's internal tuner will not do anything while you are using the KXPA100. The tuner is bypassed when the amp is in use. For an antenna "tuner" to do it's job, it must be positioned between the final amplifier and the antenna feedline. Or, (even better) at the feed point of the antenna itself. Therefore, the internal tuner of the KX3 is only in use when running the KX3 "barefoot". [Elecraft] Could this operate on a motorcycle?
>From what I have read thus far, VHF is still the best bet for this application. I have not yet heard how far these riders are spread out. If a 5W HT doesn't cut it, then perhaps adding a 30-50W amp would be more appropriate than going HF. Also, look at the antennas in use on the bikes, and their placement and adjustment. That means everyone on the ride needs to understand how to properly install and operate the equipment, and it's limitations. The bike with the lowest gain antenna/lowest power would seem to dictate the effectiveness of what it sounds like you are trying to do. I still don't think outfitting 'x' number of bikes with HF is the answer. But, I've been wrong before. You don't need to be a EE to figure this out. All (S)VGA cable are "straight-thru", in the sense that none of the pins are cross connected. However, a standard (S)VGA cable does not have all 15 wires connected from one end to the other, and often the "ground" pins are wired together. Re: [Elecraft] KX3 transverter offset
David- The latest list of unimplemented features can generally be found in the errata for the latest version of the manual. This can be downloaded from the Elecraft website, in the "manuals and downloads" section. Unfortunately, the transverter offset is not currently listed in the latest errata (it should be). This particular missing parameter was discussed as recently as last September-October on the KX3 Yahoo Group. Of course, the latest features are released in beta versions of the firmware, and then later in the full production releases. Whether you choose to run beta firmware is entirely up you, based on your needs. I have always installed the latest betas, and have never been sorry... As has been said earlier, I am sure this will be corrected soon, as development of the internal transverter is proceeding apace, and more people have been using the KX3 with external transverters. This should help move this issue higher up the firmware priority list. It will get implemented, have no fear. 73, Bruce, N1RX -Original Message- From: David Anderson [mailto:da...@gm4jjj.co.uk] Sent: Tuesday, January 14, 2014 10:51 AM To: Bruce Beford Cc: Subject: Re: [Elecraft] KX3 transverter offset Oh No! Not enough info. Are you running an audio based mode? i.e. JT65? If so, then it is very likely that you are not setting the audio levels properly to drive the K3(s). Re: [Elecraft] KX3 "Full" SDR
Dave, I agree with your math, except... Having a noise level of -27dBm delivered by the transmitter to the antenna system, does not mean the antenna has 100% radiation efficiency, yes? So -27dBm is 2 microwatts in transmitted noise to the antenna system, at this particular spacing, in a 500Hz bandwidth. You must make some allowances for not only path loss, but antenna efficiency on each end, yes? As I said, I am not trying to defend these performance (or lack thereof) claims. I just disagreed with the statement that the "Flex is transmitting wideband S9+45 noise" "S9+45dB" is a receive measurement, not a transmitter measurement. The Flex is sending 2 microwatts to the antenna at the frequency in question. Admittedly, that's too much, in many situations.
