[Elecraft] K3 - KUSB and Mac

2010-06-14 Thread Charles Teeter
Hello:

I just had an issue with getting my K3 to communicate with the driver on my
iMac. I followed the directions on the Elecraft page, downloaded the
Prolific driver for Mac OS10, and ran the install. Sadly, it didn¹t work.
In trying to troubleshoot the problem, I spoke with a fellow ham, Rick
Prather, and with Gary Surrency at Elecraft. As it turns out, the KUSB no
longer uses the Prolific chipset, but rather that from FTDC. You can get
the set for your version of the Mac OS at
http://www.ftdichip.com/Drivers/VCP.htm. After you download and install
this driver, you will connect immediately to the K3 via the Utility. Thanks
to Rick and Gary for their help.

[Elecraft] K3 - Help Needed in Chicago Area

2010-06-07 Thread Charles Teeter
Hello:

I¹m in the process of assembling my K3, and I¹ve run into a problem trying
to configure the reference oscillator. For some reason, I¹m unable to
receive any kind of signal at all. I have a windom antenna that I plan to
erect, but at the moment, I just have have it connected to the radio and
then spread out in my shack over bookcases and windows, etc. I probably
have about 20 25¹ spread out. Still, I¹m not receiving anything. I¹d
like to ask if there is a K3 owner in the Chicago area who could either
allow me to bring my radio there, connect to his antenna, and try to do the
configuration or someone nearby, perhaps with a 40M dipole who could arrange
to broadcast a signal at a specific time, etc. Ideally, I¹d like to bring
my rig to your shack and try to configure there. I need to be able to
receive WWV, and I need to be sure that my receiver is functioning properly
before I install the 100Watt amplifier and the fans. Thanks.

[Elecraft] Grounding

2010-03-22 Thread Charles Teeter
Hello:

I¹d like to thank all of you who responded to my question about station
grounding. I appreciate all the suggestions. I especially want to thank
those who provided such detailed information about their own grounding
systems. Gentlemen, you¹ve helped more than you know. Thanks.

PS: My K3 kit arrived today. I¹m doing the inventory and will begin
assembly soon. I plan to savor the experience.

[Elecraft] [OT] Grounding Antenna when not in use

2010-03-19 Thread Charles Teeter
Hello:

After I get my kit built, I¹ll be operating with a windom antenna on 40
10. It¹s been suggested that when I¹m not operating, I should disconnect
the rig from the antenna and run the antenna to ground. I¹ve never done
that in the past when I operated with wire antennas or my vertical, but it
does make sense as a safety precaution. I¹m wondering if anyone has any
suggestions about the best way(s) to do that? Are there any pieces of
equipment that you would recommend to simplify the process? Any help would
be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

[Elecraft] USB/Serial Question

2010-03-10 Thread Charles Teeter
Hello:

My computer is an iMac, so I¹m wondering if a serial/USB cable from BestBuy,
WalMart, or wherever will work, or if I should spend the extra money and buy
the one from Elecraft? I¹m hoping down the road to use the Mac also for
logging and possibly even controlling the K3. I haven¹t ordered the K3 yet
because I want to do only one order. I¹ve read most of the current threat
on USB, but I still wanted to ask this specific question. Thanks.

[Elecraft] USB/Serial Question

2010-03-10 Thread Charles Teeter
Jack,

My iMac is from late 2006, but it has all the upgrades, including that to
Snow Leopard. Steve WB6RSE mentioned also that now the Elecraft one works
FB with 10.6. I¹ll look at that as well as the one from Mouser Electronics.
Thanks, guys.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 - Purchase Recommendations

2010-03-06 Thread Charles Teeter
Hello, Everyone:

I want to thank all of you for sharing your wisdom, ideas, and
recommendations with me for my purchase of a K3. To be honest, I was
overwhelmed by the enthusiastic responses, and I want you all to know how
much I appreciate it. Unless something changes my mind, based upon what
you¹ve said, I¹m leaning toward the following:

200 Watt K3 Kit
ATU
2.8 kHz filter to replace the 2.7kHz filter
1.8 kHz roofing filter
Astron RS-35A Power Supply (unless you all recommend I spend the bucks for
RS-M version with the meters
Microphone is still up in the air
Pair of basic bookshelf speakers

I¹m going to kick this configuration around for awhile before I finally
place my order. To add to the unit in the not-too-distant future: the KBPF3
and possibly the K144XV-K (but this depends on how active I get in radio
club, so we¹ll see).

If anyone has some additional suggestions, I¹m always open to ideas. Thanks
again for all your help. Hopefully, in a month or so when I finally have my
station together, I can ³work² you on SSB.

[Elecraft] K3 - Purchase Recommendations??

2010-03-05 Thread Charles Teeter
Hello, All:

I¹ve made the decision to buy a K3, but before I do, I would like to solicit
some recommendations from you. I¹ve been out of ham radio for a long time
and am finally getting back into it. My initial plan is to operate SSB for
fun and contests. Over time, I hope to get back to CW and possibly look at
some of the other operating modes. I don¹t have the budget for a fully
loaded K3, but given the nature of the radio, I thought I could add more as
needed. What I¹m looking at right now is the basic 100 watt K3 with the ATU
and possibly the 1.8KHz filter for contesting. What do you think?

Also, I would like to ask for your suggestions for power supply, microphone,
and speaker. My last rig was a Yaesu FT980 with all of the former items
included as part of the matched set, so I have no direct experience with any
of them outside of Yaesu.

Please feel free to make any other suggestions you think are important. I¹m
really looking forward to get back into radio, and the K3 looks like the
perfect way to do it.

Thanks.

[Elecraft] K3 Users

2010-03-02 Thread Charles Teeter
Hello:

I¹m not a K3 owner yet, but I would like to chat with someone local who uses
one. I¹m interested in actually seeing the radio and getting some first
hand reviews. I¹ve been out of the hobby for a number of years and am
finally returning. I live in the Joliet, IL, area, so anybody within 50
miles of Joliet would work. Thanks.
