RE: [Elecraft] New: K3 tops the list
Sorry I brought this up. I never intended for this to be a flame thread or argumentative thread. My point is: ELECRAFT DID NOT SPECIAL TUNE MY RADIO! You finish the calibration and your radio should perform exactly the same. Others independently have verified Rob Sherwood's results. Instead of checking with me, as I indicated before, please verify this with Eric or Wayne. Then you will know too! 73, Charlie, W0YG.. -- View this message in context: http://www.nabble.com/New%3A-K3-tops-the-list-tp15549251p15562395.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] New: K3 tops the list
I am feeling pretty good about the numbers Rob Sherwood, NC0B, has come up with. That is my radio he is testing and so now I know exactly the specifics of that particular radio, SN 00149. It was a kit radio that I built, Elecraft checked it out, finished the calibration procedure, returned it to me and I lent it to Rob. He will have it until the end of next month so he will be able to make experienced comments about the K3 in general including in depth operating experiences. I am missing my radio but thrilled to participate in some small way in a test program that I am sure is standing the rest of the radio manufacturers on their collective ear! In the meantime, I am having fun with my K2, especially with all the new countries that have been or are on the air now! 73, Charlie, W0YG.. -- View this message in context: http://www.nabble.com/New%3A-K3-tops-the-list-tp15549251p15549251.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] New: K3 tops the list
I originally wrote I am feeling pretty good about the numbers Rob Sherwood, NC0B, has come up with. That is my radio he is testing and so now I know exactly the specifics of that particular radio, SN 00149. SNIP I received the following private message from NN4X: I'm curious as to why there was (apparently) not sufficient confidence to have Rob run the test on yours, after you completed the build and calibration yourself. After all, that's the radio all of us who purchase the kit will be using; not one possibly tweaked by the factory. I will post the answer here so everyone can share in exactly what happened. I was building up the radio and started final calibration. Before finishing calibration, I was anxious and listened on 160M where I heard my neighbor all across the band. I called Elecraft and asked if this was normal. Rather than farmer around, they said send it in. They gave me a return number and so I sent it in. I explained I had not finished calibration but they said they wanted to check it anyhow. I sent the radio in and they gave me the info back that I hadn't finished calibration, that they found nothing wrong. Hey I said, I told them I hadn't finished calibrating but since I knew it was going to NC0B, I was more than happy to send it in. To make a long story short, and you can check with Wayne or Eric on this, they finished calibration and shipped it back. Apparently I had stopped on the step where it is critical to calibrate the synthesizer, duh. Anyhow, Elecraft took care of the catch 22 problem for me and all is/was well. I immediately checked it on 160M when it returned and I could get within 800 Hz of my legal power running neighbor before his transmitted phase noise precluded going closer. I waited a few days until Rob and I could meet in the city and passed it on to him. Now he has the radio and is putting it through its paces. If you want to know more, I suggest you contact either Wayne or Eric or Rob as the case may be however Rob has pretty much finished his testing and published his results. That is what started all this discussion in the first place, the K3 is at the top of the list! That's my story and I am sticking to it! 73, Charlie, W0YG.. -- View this message in context: http://www.nabble.com/New%3A-K3-tops-the-list-tp15549251p15550442.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Perhaps I should clarify my previous post. I am really only looking into a Pelican case for my application. It seems as if the Pelican 1400 is just large enough to get a K2 in but there is a question about the vent screw hitting the side of the K2 as it must face sideways to fit the case. I need a Pelican case that will go in my duffle bag for my overseas trips. Since the suitcase is soft sided, actually an over the shoulder small soft sided duffle, I need a small Pelican case to protect the K2 yet fit the duffle bag. Anyone ever use the Pelican 1400 or is the 1450 the smallest, safest case to use? I have doubts about the 1450 fitting inside my duffle. On a K2, how critical is the adjustment of L34? This is an adjustment that peaks the IF amplifier. The manual states a peak should be found one turn of the slug down from the top however mine seams to be peaking right at the top of the can. [Elecraft] Re: Adjustment of L34 on a K2
I received a lot of answers but Rick, KE0X, has what seems to me to be the best explanation on how to set L34. I just tried it and it seems to work. I want to revisit setting the AGC now but I can see exactly what Rich is talking about. Here is what he recommends: Here is a technique I used to adjust L34 - While performing the I.F. Amplifier Alignment section of Alignment and Test Part II, I used Spectrogram (just about any program that displays the received signals should work). I had meant to put this hint on the reflector long ago and keep forgetting. Follow the instructions for I.F. Amplifier Alignment. When you get to the last step plug the PC sound card into the Speaker Jack (not Headphone as it attenuates some high frequencies - but it probably don't make that much difference). You will notice some noise spread across the spectrum displayed. Make sure the XFIL is set for FL-1 OP-1. Now continue to adjust L34 for a compromise of the lowest displayed noise and the highest level of the tone (signal). You will find a point where the noise is almost non existent. Even though I had adjusted this to what I thought was the best by ear, after using this method and then re-adjusting the AGC threshold, I was amazed at the difference in sensitivity and audio level (I think the noise de-senses the AGC - perhaps the experts can explain this). Maybe this is one of the problems/reasons some people complain about low output volume. Thanks Rich! I received a lot of direct replies and apparently more than just me are/were confused by this adjustment. 73, Charlie, W0YG.. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] K2/100 at VK9XG and VK9CG
W0MY and I also used a K2/100 with Acom 1010 amplifier for my VK9XG and our VK9CG operation. The K2 performed admirably and never missed a beat. There is a lot in that little box with no compromises. A nice aside is they can be carried in a carry on backpack without any problems. I intend to use this rig for my trips from now on! 73, Charlie, W0YG.. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. [Elecraft] Setting RTTY Filters
The key to setting these filters is to understand what is being used to generate the RTTY or AFSK tones. In my case, a KAM, as I indicated initially, was used for RTTY. This means that the KAM must be fed 2125Hz tones from the K2, then shift down if RTTY normal and up if RTTY reverse by 170 Hz. Don, W3FPR, gave me a clue when he indicated I should set the markers in Spectrogram at 400 and 2400 and place the RTTY filter using CAL FIL and Band- to get to the BFO setting. Doing this allowed me to receive RTTY tones with OPT1 filter in the RTTY position. I then proceeded to set the width of FL2 and adjust the BFO, again centering the display in Spectrogram around 2125 or, put another way, placing the filter display so that it covered all frequencies of the RTTY tones for proper input to a KAM. I then set filter 3 and filter 4 in the same way. I selected OPT1 for FL1, 1500Hz for FL2, 800Hz for FL3 and 450Hz for FL4. I found in each case I needed to readjust the BFO setting for filters FL2 through FL4. I also found that 450Hz is mighty tight for tuning with a KAM but I sat here listening to a RX3 call CQ. Thank goodness his signal was on as it eased my problem of setting the filters. The key is a KAM TNC and the tones it must see. Other programs, like MMTY or others, allow much more flexibility in where to set the center of the RTTY filter passband. If I go to MMTY one of these days, I will have to do this exercise again but at least I know am confident in setting the filters. Hope this helps someone struggling with setting RTTY filters for use with an external TNC. 73, Charlie, W0YG.. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] Center Frequency when setting RTTY Filters
Since the ability to set filters when using the RTTY mode is different than LSB/USB if used for AFSK, what center frequency do you use? Perhaps I should rephrase this. When setting filters in the RTTY mode (the K2 defaults to the SSB filters when in RTTY mode unless RTTY filters are set) do you use 1000 Hz as the center frequency? [Elecraft] Sorry for the off topic message
I know this is a stretch but I have a Brown Brothers CTL-A key that has a broken beam. The left side beam broke when the key fell off the table. I have looked for several years for a replacement beam but cannot seem to find a key that is in rough shape being sold for parts. Anybody out there have an old Brown Brothers key that matches the iambic side of the CTL-A key they want to sell? I can send a photo of what the key should look like if needed. Hopefully someone will send a reply. I am running out of options. 73, Charlie, W0YG.. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] KDSP2 Module instruction confusion
I have a K2/100 SN 4853. It works fine except I sure do not understand a part of the instructions for the KDSP2. Let me explain: I can follow the instructions up to page 26, the bottom of the page. There is has a heading, KDSP2 filter display. Just above this heading is the sentence: To access the next menu, press RCL. You can always get to the next menu by pressing this button. OK when I press RCL, I sure don't get what the manual says, something like S.2 .20 2.5. I can get to this by doing something else. However what I do get is the display RCL 0-9. Nowhere do I see a description for this display. Please note the display might be rCl 0-9 but I have shown it all in caps for clarity. What is this display? What does it mean? Anyone have a hint where I might find this display described? The KDSP2 works fine. I don't have a problem with it. The K2/100 totally meets all checks and is on the air. I just get a display that is different than the instructions and I wonder why. [Elecraft] Earlier version of Spectogram
I am trying to locate the earlier, free version of Spectogram for aligning filters in my K2. Does anybody have this program downloaded? The latest version that all the links in the Elecraft Resources URL seem to download a later version that the instructions don't really apply to regarding the examples in Tom Hammonds articles. [Elecraft] SN 4853 in build
I just received K2/100 #4853 yesterday. I have been building like mad and also keeping track of the time I spent on each board. The control board took 5 hours. The front panel board has taken four hours but does not pass the resistance checks. I initially got readings on J1 similar to what the table indicated but after letting it sit for a while, I seem to get an open on perhaps the first 8 or 9 pins. Wonder if I have fried a chip somehow? 73, Charlie, W0YG.. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr.
