Re: [Elecraft] How to program the K3 PF buttons to control a KRC2?
As further background, I am using the K3/100 remotely via RemoteRig with a K3/0 at my control QTH. I would like to setup the KRC2 at the remote or radio location connected to the K3/100 AUX bus. Then I could use the PF1 and PF2 buttons on the K3/0 to control relays at the remote or radio location. One of the relays will switch the audio lines from the K3/100 that go into the RemoteRig radio box. Normally the two receiver audio lines will be brought back via the Internet but when I activate the relay, the main receiver speaker audio and line level audio will be brought back for RTTY and other sound card applications which need fixed level audio (when doing RTTY it's nice to be able to turn down the volume some). In addition, I want to be able to switch antennas (not based on band) and control other functions as required. Apparently according to the manuals, the PF keys can be programmed via the K3 Setup Utility but I cannot find the specific command syntax to load into the macros. 73, - Craig, AE6RR -Original Message- From: Jack Brindle [mailto:jackbrin...@me.com] Sent: Monday, February 18, 2013 10:27 PM To: d...@w3fpr.com Cc: Craig - AE6RR; Elecraft Reflector Subject: Re: [Elecraft] How to program the K3 PF buttons to control a KRC2? The KRC2 ACC outputs are only accessible from the buttons on the KRC3 itself, and are not accessible through AUXBUS commands as far as I know. I do not think the PF1 nor PF2 buttons are capable of issuing any AUXBUS commands. Check the K3 Programmer's Reference for the commands that can be executed with macros. [Elecraft] KRC2 Modified Firmware?
I would like to use a KRC2 at my remote station to control various relays. This would require either new or modified firmware as the standard firmware listens to a radio's CAT port and decode band information. I would like communicate with the KRC2 via a terminal program such as HyperTerminal and manually enter commands to actuate the relays. [Elecraft] K3 Key jack
I am using my K3/100 with the RemoteRig setup. The RemoteRig Radio RRC has a 1/8 or 3.5mm stereo connector for CW key out (straight key). The cable set came with a stereo 1/8 to 1/8 cable and a stereo 1/8 to 1/4 adaptor. The 1/8 plug is a very loose fit in the adaptor and I am having intermittent connection problems. I am going to look for a better adaptor or make a 1/8 to 1/4 cable. The question is, what kind of connector does the K3 have for key input (not paddle)? Is it a 3-conductor connector (stereo) or a 2-conductor (mono) connector? Re: [Elecraft] K3/0 to K3/100 RemoteRig transmit audio problem
Thanks to all that replied off list with suggestions. The problem is fixed. It was actually two problems. The first and most severe was RF feedback into the transmit audio. I put a ferrite on the mic cable from the Radio RRC box to the K3 and that helped some, but reducing power to about 15 W cured it. It also disappeared when I tested with a dummy load. Then I need to adjust the codec gain values on the Radio RRC. The audio now sounds great. I am not sure if I had RF pickup in the Control RRC or the Radio RRC or both. I am going to deploy the system to the remote site and see how it works there with an antenna that is farther removed than my stealth antenna at home (that's why I need a remote site). I will also be using an amp at the remote site. The supplied mic cables in the cable kits are made with a couple of feet of CAT-6 Ethernet cable and a mic and PTT cable spiced on the end. I am thinking about making a new one for the radio end with shielded CAT-6 and see if that helps. The RJ-45s on the RRC boxes are the shielded types so I will get a grounded shield on that end. The next question will be if I should connect the CAT-6 shield to the mic and PTT shields at the splice point. I may need to experiment with that. I also have a supply of ferrites (bit ones) to play with. 73, - Craig, AE6RR -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Craig - AE6RR Sent: Friday, November 16, 2012 9:35 AM To: Elecraft Reflector Subject: [Elecraft] K3/0 to K3/100 RemoteRig transmit audio problem I am using a K3/0 and a K3/100 with the RemoteRig boxes. Hi Fred, I have tried tapping the DISP key several times and tried with both alt data and VFO B. The CWT indicator does not blink when I adjust the threshold either, so it may be a decoding problem. Re: [Elecraft] How accurate is the K3 SWR meter
If you have an SWR greater than 1:1, there will be standing waves on the coax between the K3 and the external SWR meter and the length of the coax between the two will change the SWR difference and it will vary with frequency due to the change in wavelength of the piece of coax. If the SWR is 1:1 (try with a dummy load), the two meters should both read 1:1. Try a very short piece of coax or a PL-259 to PL-259 coupler between the radio and the external meter and see if that gets you a closer reading. In any case as stated below it is the SWR at the final amplifier that counts. 73, - Craig, AE6RR -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Vic K2VCO Sent: Monday, March 19, 2012 6:59 PM To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] How accurate is the K3 SWR meter If the K3's antenna tuner is not set to 'Bypass' then there will almost certainly be a difference, since the external tuner is reading the SWR between the output of the internal tuner and the antenna, while the K3's reading is between the K3's final amplifier and its tuner. This difference can be very great, because the internal tuner is doing its job! If your K3 does not have an internal tuner or you have set it to Bypass, then there may be a small difference due to inaccuracies in the tuners, and stray inductance and capacity in the K3's output circuitry. You can ignore this -- I would use the K3's reading in this case because it represents what the K3's final amplifier is seeing. On 3/19/2012 6:42 PM, Robert G. Re: [Elecraft] Fwd: K3 Failed DSP Firmware Download
Bob, I had the same experience with my first K3 firmware upgrade. I had the radio connected to the microKEYER II in the normal operating configuration and was trying out the utility, checking filter settings etc. and decided to do a firmware upgrade. I had forgotten about micrcoHAM's warning and proceeded to click the upgrade button, there was no Are You Sure? warning as Microsoft has trained us to expect, it just proceeded to turn the radio into a brick. After the thoughts of a road trip to Aptos went through my mind, I remembered the warning, poked around in the manual and found the recovery procedure. I switched to a physical serial port on the PC and after a couple of attempts managed to turn the brick back into a radio. The radio queries can be disabled in the microHAM USB Device Router if you go to the ports tab and click the SET button for the CAT port you will get a new screen the has a check box for Disable router queries. If you are brave, you could try this. I am not sure if I am that brave. It would be nice if the upgrade installation software was a bit more robust and didn't just give up if it gets a bad record (the records do have checksums or some other validity check, I hope). If it would try again after a bad record, it could probably recover. 73, - Craig, AE6RR K3 SN #4877 -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Bob Lanning Sent: Sunday, February 06, 2011 10:58 AM To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Fwd: K3 Failed DSP Firmware Download My first time FW upgrade failed too. The problem? I use Router a virtual port defining piece of software microHAM uses for their product's interfaces to such things as the microKEYER II. In their manual is a warning in Yellow to not perform FW upgrades via the microKEYER II interface which uses a port in their Router. Indeed - don't do it. microHAM support told me the problem is the Router is continually polling the radio and interferes with the download. While all other features and functions of Elecraft's Utility and Memory Editor works fine, the FW download does not. I have a desktop PC with no serial ports only lots of USB. Elecraft sells a very nice serial RS-232 to USB adapter cable with FTDI chip. Using the FTDI driver to define a separate USB port as a COM port works well. I have also used Prolific drivers for converter cables using Prolific protocol without any attention. Both work really well. It will/would be nice to have Elecraft provide a USB port in the radio like some other manufacturers. ICOM for instance - absolutely trouble free and simple. Copy a file to a thumb drive and stick it in the radio's USB jack and press Upload. Also in the case of ICOM's 7800 and 7700, you can plug a USB keyboard in and run RTTY or PSK - from the keyboard. No paddle needed. Anyway - microHAM has excellent software and hardware but as they say, do not attempt to download FW into any radio using an interface with something like microKEYER II. So when I want to perform a FW update I unplug the microKEYER II originating DB-9 from the K3 and plug in the separate USB/RS232 cable and perform the update. 73, Bob - W6OPO __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] Fwd: K3 Failed DSP Firmware Download
Joe, Thanks for clarifying this and explaining the operation. I now have a cable attached to the serial port on my computer that is my spare or download cable. I handle all of the normal radio communications via my microKEYER interfaces (one dedicated to each radio). I find this very convenient for switching radios. I set all of the microKEYERs to the same CAT port (and any other ports in use) and then use presets to switch radios. My other software then doesn't know the difference; it just talks to the same COM port which is now directed to the selected radio. This works well since my radios are all Elecraft and Kenwoods so the commands are compatible. I intend to stay out of the brick business! 73, - Craig, AE6RR -Original Message- From: Joe Subich, W4TV [mailto:li...@subich.com] Sent: Sunday, February 06, 2011 11:57 AM To: Craig - AE6RR Cc: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Fwd: K3 Failed DSP Firmware Download The radio queries can be disabled in the microHAM USB Device Router if you go to the ports tab and click the SET button for the CAT port you will get a new screen the has a check box for Disable router queries. It is theoretically possible to set the radio type to None and do an update but you can not allow Router or the microHAM keyer to reset (e.g. power must stay on) during the reboot phase. Because of the possibility to turning the radio - any radio - or the microHAM interface into a brick by an improper update (or by buggy software if microHAM were to allow something like the K3 Utility to disable the keyer's normal operation), microHAM simply prohibits any update through the keyer. 73, ... Also in the case of ICOM's 7800 and 7700, you can plug a USB keyboard in and run RTTY
Re: [Elecraft] Fwd: K3 Failed DSP Firmware Download
Dick, Would it be possible to check each record or block of data for validity (checksum, CRC, etc.) and acknowledge (ACK) or request a resend (NAK) from the PC before writing it to flash? If a data block is corrupted a resend could be quested multiple times before giving up, declaring an error and bricking the radio. Another option would be to validate the serial connection with some test data before starting the actual download. As a bare minimum, I would suggest a warning box that would popup when a download is started. Something like: Do not attempt this with a microHAM USB interface or any other non-compatible interface - Click OK to proceed. I do highly commend Elecraft for including a bootstrap loader in the firmware which allows the user to correct the problem without having to send the radio back to the factory which is the case with many other upgradeable products. 73, - Craig, AE6RR -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Dick Dievendorff Sent: Sunday, February 06, 2011 1:08 PM To: n...@aiko.com Cc: Elecraft; d...@w3fpr.com Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Fwd: K3 Failed DSP Firmware Download The PIC18F8722 microcontroller used has 128KB of flash program memory and a bit less than 4KB of RAM. I am still a new K3 user and learning the radio. I have looked through the manual a couple of times and I cannot find out how to turn APF on. I must be missing that. Re: [Elecraft] K3 APF Problem
Thanks to all the replied offline. I now have the latest manual (D9 version) and the release notes for the firmware. Let's see if it helps my pull VP8ORK out of the noise on 80m tonight. I did work them on 40m CW and SSB last night with the K3 and an ALS-1300 amp. 73, - Craig, AE6RR -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Craig - AE6RR Sent: Tuesday, February 01, 2011 9:20 AM To: e...@elecraft.com; 'Jim Harris' Cc: 'Elecraft Email' Subject: Re: [Elecraft] K3 APF Problem I am still a new K3 user and learning the radio. [Elecraft] Ameritron Solid State Amp control with Elecraft KRC2 Band Decoder
I am thinking about trying to use an Elecraft KRC2 Band Decoder to control the band switching on a Ameritron ALS-1300 (same remote control as the ALS-500 and ALS-600). The rig will be a Kenwood TS-480. The KRC2 is capable of reading band data from the TS-480 and controlling relays, so this looks like a good fit. I also want to maintain full communication from a PC to the radio, so the KRC2 must just listen to the RS-232 line and not interfere. I think that this is possible from reading the manual. The Ameritron ARI-500 is not suitable as it continues to send status requests to the radio and does not listen (half duplex) while it is sending, causing strange band switching behavior on the amp. Has anyone controlled an Ameritron solid state amp with a KRC2? 73, - Craig, AE6RR __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] Soldering Naked - Eyes
On the serious side of this, I highly recommend wearing glasses or safety glasses when soldering. On more than one occasion in the past (when radios had terminal strips with soldered wires) I have sprayed little blobs of solder on myself when removing a wire from a wrapped connection. The wire strands can sometimes spring back and fling solder. I have had to remove solder bits from the lens' of my glasses. Of course these days many of us need glasses to find the radio... 73, - Craig, AE6RR -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Gary Gregory Sent: Saturday, December 18, 2010 1:58 PM To: Steve Ellington Cc: Barry; elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Soldering Naked 'Chuckle'...OK...I guess the 'blob' of metal from the MIG welder that entered my boot and caused me to star in an unscripted episode of 'Dancing with the Sparks' pales into insignificance.
