The contest free zones are called the WARC bands, and the KX3 operates well

[Elecraft] High SWR into Dummy load

2011-02-13 Thread DBellW6AQ
Hi, I just finished putting together my 2nd K3, downloading all the
firmware, etc., and find that while everything seems to work fine, my SWR is
astronomical -- like 15 to 1 after the antenna tuner has looked for a good
match, and that's into a 50 ohm Elecraft dummy load.

This is a K3-10, with KAT3, KDVR3, KXV3A, KIO3, KUSB.

Before I tear it apart again, I'm just wondering if there's something
obvious that I'm overlooking.

[Elecraft] Line Audio Output Mod

2011-01-19 Thread DBellW6AQ
I'm really confused. I have a KIO3A, Rev A, C 2007. According to the Mod
instructions this board should need the resistance modification. BEFORE I
began the mod, the resistance across R19 and R20 was about 51 ohms each.
So how can I put a 51 ohm resistor in parallel with R19 and 20 and end up
with a new resistance of between 45 and 49 ohms? Thinking there might be a
flaw in my thinking somewhere, I added a leaded resistor across R20 and
sure enough, the resistance was now about 26 ohms, so I took it out.

What gives? Instructions wrong? Am I missing something? Thanks in
advance.

[Elecraft] IF output buffer gain Mod

2010-03-01 Thread DBellW6AQ
So I see how to attach it but have no idea what a via is? I built a KX
1 without ever running into a via I think. And if you can see the via
used to anchor one lead of the resistor in the photograph that is in the
instructions you have either better eyes or a better imagination than I do.
Apparently the via is the little plastic thing in the envelope with the
resistor, but what is it for?

And for that matter, what is the purpose of this modification? 10db more
signal level at the IF output gets me what exactly? I could use a little
more gain in my Heil BM-10 headphones, but is this going to get that for me
without distortion?

1,000 pardons if this has already been beaten to death on the reflector.

[Elecraft] K3 and N1MM help please

2009-11-08 Thread DBellW6AQ
I can't get my K3 to respond to the N1MM F keys. The F keys are all
programmed and when I press one, the red TX light on the K3 lights up, the
receiver mutes, but there's no transmit signal on CW -- I haven't tried SSB
yet. The frequency on the K3 tracks fine in N1MM. The K3 is NOT in test
mode, the CW icon is on, VOX is on, QSK is on.

My N1MM settings are: Com 1, K3, no checks, 4,800, N, 8, 1, DTR Always On,
RTS Always Off. Incidentally, N1MM suggests for a K3 that both DTR and
RTS be on, but it didn't make any difference -- same result both ways. Com 3
is not checked under radio, but is checked for CW, DTR=CW, RTS=Always Off,
Tx=1. No other Com ports have checks of any kind. Incidentally, while my
reading of the N1MM instructions would make you think you need a check for
Telnet, that is not the case. Telnet works fine without a check. Packet
may not but I didn't check.

My K3 PTT-KEY setting is rts - OFF. I've tried about every PTT--KEY
setting there is and none of them work. I must say that the Config menu
setting
in the K3 Owner's Manual (the latest, online) is really inadequate in my
opinion. Two of my computer savvy friends worked on this problem with me
and neither has come up with a solution.

Hoping for some light at the end of the tunnel.
