I use Tascam US-2x2 digital sound card boxes, work very well, have about 100 db noise level, I actually have three of the them used mostly for MARS. [Elecraft] Current MARS Radio
Current MARS radio is contingency support for the government especially emergency communications in a very bad day, such as massive power grid loss. Phone patch usage is minimal. Unfortunately the K3 is not highly recommended for MARS use as it does not have full power output from 2 to 30 Mhz. Low end radios from Icom, Kenwood, and Yaesu with TCXOs and full coverage from 2 to 30 Mhz are all that is needed. Encrypted digital and ALE are currently used as well as SSB voice. MARS has greatly evolved in the last few years and it is not what it was 40 or 50 years ago. [Elecraft] Low Serial Numbered K3
Any problems with buying a K3 with a low serial number, say that has had hardware updates and alignments? [Elecraft] Astron SS-30M Fan Noise
The Astron SS-30M is a fine power supply with one exception, very loud fan noise. Most everyone solves the problem by putting an 100 ohm resistor across the fan thermal switch, which causes the fan to run all the time, but still noisy at full power. I didn't want mine running all the time, checked out the specs of the Sunon fan, it sells for $2.55 at Digikey, and is rated for 12 volts. My power supply is running at 13.9, almost two volts high for the fan. I inserted a 20 ohm resistor in series out of the thermal switch, fan runs at about 12 volts and is much quieter. I may replace it with one of the Noctua fans and see if that works better. The Noctua 80mm fan is also rated at 12 volts so I plan to leave the resistor in place for now. More to come.
