The K3/10, K3S/10 and the KX3 can do that, it is just a matter of a
proper cable.

The K2/10 does not have a KEYOUT line (although the K2/100 does).  I
would recommend that you build the circuit shown on Tom Hammond N0SS
(SK) website at http://www.mmccs.com/mmarc/n0ss/index_k2.html.
Since Tom is SK, no boards are available, but the circuit is easy enough
to build on perfboard.  Just follow Tom's board layout which is clearly
identified full scale on his website and connect the wires.  If you have
the capabilities for etching your own board, the process is easy since
Tom provided full scale images of his board.
I have built several of the perfboard verions of that circuit and they
work fine.

I am not a contester, but do have a computer hook up to my K3 for logging my

Well i guess those of us who do not contest have to live with what
contesters have on their wish list.
But i do wonder where all those k3's live who are not vocal on the
reflector.
Don't they at least deserve to be considered prior to changes in the way we
operate daily?
I think we do.
I think Elecraft have lost their way somewhat.

[Elecraft] Apartment/condo antenna

2014-05-25 Thread David Guernsey via Elecraft
I am moving to a condo on the 2nd floor of a brick and concrete building.  The
condo rules do not allow anything to extend over the balcony railings.
However, they do allow flag pole to be "clamped" to the railing of the balcony.
I have considered an mfj 1622 antenna inside of a pvc pipe as my flag pole.
Any ideas?

You probably want a professional unit, but "suitable" will depend a lot
on what she can comfortable wear.  Some givens.  A professional
microphone will have balanced wiring, and most will be electret
condenser mics that require phantom power. They will also require a
preamplifier, and many such preamps provide phantom power.

Most pro headworn mics do NOT come with headphones. Professional
"headworn" microphones are used by performers, preachers, exercise
instructors, and are generally quite lightweight.  They are often used
with wireless mic transmitters, and there are unbalanced versions for
this use.

Depending on what she can wear and/or tolerate, she can choose from
separate headphones and a headworn mic, or those with a boom mic
attached. Sennheiser makes a very nice boom headset, but it's fairly
heavy (rather like Yamaha CM500). I've not worn one of them, but
Sennheiser is a great company and I suspect they are quite comfortable.
They're not cheap.

There's another interesting option. Tascam, a major mfr of semi-pro
audio gear, now makes some rather nice USB audio interfaces that have
inputs for both balanced and unbalanced mics and headphone outputs.
They would work well with a low cost set like the CM500, and also with
the Sennheiser, because it provides phantom power for pro mics. They do
NOT provide bias for unbalanced mics (like the CM500).

Yet another option. Virtually any unbalanced mic can be used with a pro
wireless mic system, and these systems DO provide bias for electret
mics. The headphones, or in-ear phones, could be wired, or could be used
with a wireless receiving system. Several companies make them, including
Shure and Comtek. Those used by performers are called "in-ear monitors"
and those used by broadcasters are called IFB systems (that's what you
see newcasters wearing).

I'm copying this to a pro audio colleague who may be able to help you.
Ray Rayburn is an audio systems design consultant who has designed sound
systems for many churches, and for  both houses of Congress. He also
sells inexpensive mics and wireless mic systems, mostly to churches. Ray
is also a ham. Michael Petersen, an applications engineer at Shure,
would also be a good resource. You can reach him through their main number.

We usually have a strong so. Cal station, John - N6JW, who helps pull in PNW
stations that I can't hear.  He was absent today.  today, we had several
southern stations acting as relays (GA, AL and TX).  We'll keep trying.  I'll
look at asking those that hear me well to stand by for the others that may be
getting drowned out. Perhaps a relay in each time zone.

[Elecraft] (K3) 10 Watt DX

2012-12-16 Thread David Guernsey
Thanks to Elecraft for a great radio.  I was able to make a DX contact with the
South Cook Islands using my K3/10 at only 10 watts on 15 meters today.  I only
have an invergted vee up about 30 ft. for an antenna and run my K3 at 10 watts
almost exclusively.

Re: [Elecraft] Help with K3 Evaluation in Palo Alto

2012-11-16 Thread David Guernsey
Jay -

I have a K3/10 and operate at about 10 watts all of the time.  I use an 10-40
meter inverted vee up about 30 feet from my QTH here in Salinas.  I have had
many SSB contacts with this set up on all bands, but mostly on 10, 20, and 15
meters.  The only problemI have had with DX is getting through the pileups with
only 10 watts, but persistence has paid off in many cases.  I would go the K3
route again if I did not have one already.

Subject: [Elecraft] Help with K3 Evaluation in Palo Alto

Hi,

I have been considering for some time about buying a K3; however, given the
limited space and antenna constraints (have a simple 20M dipole about 30 feet
up) at our home in Palo Alto, I am not sure if I can put together a decent set
up worthy of week signal CW DXing or contesting. I am wondering if anybody
might be willing to show me their K3 setup or even help me try it out in my
location just to get a good feel for the performance?

Thanks in advance!

Have only used it for K3 Utility and MacLoggerDX.  Worked for both up until
this pm.

Using Keyspan USA-19H Serial to USB adapter.

Driver is installed and worked before.

Dave,

A few questions:

Have you used that USB/Serial converter for other programs.  Since you say it
won't work with either the K3 Utility or MLDX I wonder if it has worked with
anything else.

What type of adaptor are you using (Prolific, FTDI, etc.)?

Have you installed the appropriate driver?

What version of OSX are you using on your mini?

Dave,

Any chance that you have VOX turned on?  That may allow noise to send the K3
into transmit.  Yes, PTT works even if VOX is selected.

[Elecraft] [K3] Stuck in Transmit

2012-01-12 Thread David Guernsey
My K3/10 is stuck in transmit.  I recently changed power strip/surge protector
for the power supply to a strip that uses one of the pieces of equipment as a
control to turn all the others on and off.  I have my Mac Mini as the control
piece of equipment with the monitor and printer power controlled by the
computer.  The Astron RS-35M, which supplies power to the K3, is in a
non-switched plug on the power strip.  I have read the K3 Owners Manual and can
not find any solution for the problem.  I have checked that K3 is not in VOX,
and that the PTT is not stuck.  Additionally, if I go into the MENU or CONFIG
modes, the VFO B knob does not change the display, so I cannot check the
configuration.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

How about serial ports? Will USB/serial converters work?

Grant et al -

This is no mystery - it just seems like one. 14.316 (or 14.317) Mhz is
the 4th harmonic of 3.579 MHz, the common color burst frequency. Color
burst crystals are used in an incredible variety of consumer devices.
These days, the oscillators are usually configured as a digital gate
oscillator (read - square wave) that is very rich in harmonics. If you
take the time to look, you will find signals at all the harmonics. We
notice it mostly on 80, 40, and 20 meters because that is where we have
efficient antennas and receivers optimized for reception on those same
frequencies.

Is this a problem? You bet it is. Are these devices in violation of
the part 15 rule that says that such devices may not cause interference
to licensed services? Yes, they are. However, there is a fly in the
ointment. The FCC's rules for interference mitigation say that
(paraphrasing here) "It's not interference until someone complains!"
Unfortunately, the burden is on you (the ham) to identify which device
is causing the problem, and then notify the device owner that his gadget
(TV set, computer, stereo set, alarm clock, microwave oven, kids toy,
calculator, FAX machine, treadmill, coffee maker, video game, . . . . .
) is causing interference. They you get to educate the consumer, an
always interesting endeavor. So, unless you have complained to the FCC
and the manufacturers and the stores that sell the devices and the end
users, it's not interference! Ain't that great?!

The process of informing the miscreants will keep you entertained for
some time.Thank you local congress critter for failing to enact more
rigorous standards concerning interference from consumer devices. They
are the ones who responded to the lobbyists from the electronics
industry that promised this would never be a problem, and voted to water
down the rules accordingly.

Have a nice day.

I have a Mac Mini sitting right next to my K3/10 on my desk and have had no
problems. The radio is grounded of course, but the computer is not.

[Elecraft] Mac Mini, cocoamodem, and k3

2011-02-20 Thread David Guernsey
Has anyone used cocoamodem with the k3 and a mac mini computer? How do you
hook
the computer to the k3? In the manual I find a microphone in plug which would
be the line in, but find no line out to take the computer audio back to the k3.

Any help would be appreciated, even if it is to say, "It can't be done."

Thanks in advance.

[Elecraft] K3 and Flatscreen Monitor

2010-09-05 Thread David Guernsey
I have an Acer flatscreen monitor hooked to a Mini Mac sitting about 8 inches
from my K3. I have absolutely no discernable RFI from the monitor on any band.

I get more interference from the air handling fans on the High School about a
block away than the monitor.

I have a Mac Mini sitting right next to my K3/10 and with the antenna about 25

meters. No interference on any other band.

Re: [Elecraft] A thought regarding new radios

2010-07-04 Thread David Guernsey
Brett -

You hit the nail on the head. Bought my K3/10 with ATU with full intentions of
adding other options as I could afford them. My next items to add are the
KXV3A and KPA100. They are on my Christmas list with a note that even part of
the cost as a gift would be niice.

And don't forget you also improve value by not having to pay for
features that you won't use. Don't need a tuner? You don't have to pay
for one... Don't want two receivers? You don't have to pay for both of
them...

Then on another note... Want two receivers but don't have the money to
pay for one now? Get on the air with part of the radio and add that
which you want later...

My family loves my K3 as it has made for an avenue of Xmas presents for
the guy who has everything for a few years coming now... ;)
