Re: [Elecraft] Control of Screwdriver Antenna

2018-07-04 Thread David Shoaf
You can make one yourself with a bridge motor controller and some sort of
Arduino. You can then program it using the KX3 Programmers Reference.

Or, you can check out the TuneMatic products from JT Communications. He's
already done the work and it works with the KX3 standing along or with the
KX3/KXPA100 combo for mobile applications. Tarheel Antennas also resells
this controller.

I'm sure there are others but I see Jim Trapani (JT Communications) in a
booth at the hamfests.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 and KPA500 integration

2018-06-21 Thread David Shoaf
Hi Andy,

The short answer is that neither the KPA500 or KAT500 can source signals -
they can only read them from a transceiver and then follow its direction.
This means that they can both read the status information from a Kenwood's
COM port and act on it.

This does not require the AUX cables which are specifically designed for the
K3/K3S to provide the unique features they have when connected in that way.
This would include the ability of the KAT500 to read the K3/K3S VFO
frequency and pre-select tuning elements, band-tracking with the K3/K3S and
the KPA500's ability to report its OPER/STBY status to the K3/K3S so it can
switch between the 2 RF PWR settings it maintains on a per-band basis.

Cheers,

David/KG6IRW

Re: [Elecraft] Suggestions for Introducing a 10-year-old to Amateur Radio and Electronics

2017-10-15 Thread David Shoaf
I'm with Fred. I gave both of my grandsons a Kano and they have just love
them . This is, essentially, a Raspberry Pi with a
custom-built Linux operating system .

They've learned Scratch, a procedural-type of programming language that uses
building blocks to create the procedures. They've also learned how to use
programming to make things go faster when playing Minecraft
  .

The kids don't know they're learning process, procedure and logic but they
do. When they're introduced to more formal programming, however, they'll be
well up the learning curve. This is the introduction to the Maker movement
for them. They've since been to a robot summer camp and they ate that up,
too.

Why do I suggest this first rather than take them up to a mountain top and
send morse code with them? Its the hook. Once they see how we merge
computers and the digital modes, I'm expecting the grandsons to have a
better sense of what I'm doing. They see me doing things with a Raspberry
Pi and an Arduino with ham radio. That's the bridge.

It is all about pulling them along, folks.

Cheers,

David/KG6IRW

Re: [Elecraft] Question about my KX2

2017-08-15 Thread David Shoaf
Paul, eliminate some of the variables to isolate the problem:

- Use a dummy load and step through the KX2 bands to be sure it can transmit
directly into it. Use the TUNE button to get that done. Make sure the
internal antenna tuner is set to BYP mode.

- Then, add in the transmission line with the dummy load terminating it.
Remove the hand-built balun to do this so you're testing the line only.

- Then, add in the balun and retest on all bands but connect it directly to
the KX2 and terminate the other end with a dummy load. This allows you to
test it by itself. It better read 1:9 or 9:1 depending on how it is
connected.

- Lastly, add the transmission line and the balun together and then connect
the dummy load to the output of it. Be sure you're stepping through all the
bands when you do this, too.

As you can see, isolating the items will help you determine where, if any,
there's a problem. It isn't appropriate to jump to conclusion - yet -
there's a problem with the KX2. Eliminate all that is known to work
properly and you'll have your answer.

Cheers,

David

Re: [Elecraft] JT-65

2016-10-15 Thread David Shoaf
Assuming you're referring to a K3S, here's a nice set up posted at eHam.net
. It provides many of the fundamental
configuration details that apply if you're using a KX3 or KX2 as well.

If you havent' done so, my suggestion is that you get PSK31 set up and
running first then move on to WSPR or one of the other JT65 programs. FLdigi
is a popular and low-cost (free!) way to get started that way.

Do post here about what rig you're using and any additional soundcard
devices you may intend to use. These details make a difference how the set
up should work.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA3 vs KPA3A

2016-02-07 Thread David Shoaf
This has been discussed in the K3S FAQ. See the link to it on the main
Elecraft.com web page. Here's the detailed answer from it.

Q: Can I move the KPA3 100-watt PA module from my K3 to a K3S, or do I need
the new
KPA3A module?

A: A KPA3 can be used in a K3S. However, we recommend using the KPA3A PA
module,
because the K3S RF board was optimized for use with the KPA3A's MOSFET power
transistors. In a K3S, a KPA3A will typically provide 1 to 3 dB better
transmit IMD
performance, on average, than a KPA3.

Hope that helps.

Re: [Elecraft] Using Yaesu FT-991 with KPA500

2014-12-20 Thread David Shoaf
Hi Roy,

Found a copy of the Owner's Manual for the Ft-991. The short answer to your
question is, yes, there appears to be BCD Band Data Lines on the Ft-991's
8-pin Mini DIN connector labeled for Linear. Actually, the connector and
pin out definitions appear to be exactly like the FT857/897 series of
radios, too. I believe you'll need to make a MENU change in order for it to
work, too.

See Page 12 in the Owner's Manual for wiring for Basic mode operation with
the KPA500. Yaesu seems to hint that there's a cable available for that
connection method - most likely through their parts department. See page 21
for a definition of the Linear port. I suspect there's a pin-out diagram in
the back of the manual that will match the Yaesu pin out table in the KPA500
Owner's Manual for the Band Data signals.

Cheers,

David/KG6IRW

Re: [Elecraft] KXUSB with Linux

2014-11-06 Thread David Shoaf
Hi Lyn,

Nate is on the right track.

Here is a list of the required Linux libraries and facilities that must be
present and enabled for Elecraft Utilities to operate successfully on that
platform.

1) 32 bit vs 64 bit Distributions

The Elecraft Utilities for Linux are 32-bit and will not run on 64-bit
distros. There are 32-bit compatibility libraries are available that will
allow 32-bit apps to run. To install the 32-bit compatibility libraries from
a terminal:

sudo apt-get install ia32-libs

2) FTP must be installed on your Linux

You will have to install cURL if it is not pre-installed. Most distros have
it pre-installed, but not all. It is easy to install from a terminal:

sudo apt-get install curl

3) Ensure our DialOut groups are set up properly

Most users, other than root and members of the dialout group, do not have
read/write permissions on the serial port device files. The Utilities cannot
access the serial ports if the user does not have r/w permissions. An easy
way to set the permissions is to add the user to the dialout group:

sudo adduser your username dialout

Cheers,

David

Re: [Elecraft] Fw: homebrew KX3 electret microphone

2014-10-25 Thread David Shoaf
You don't need a TRRS plug. You can use a TRS plug. Mic hot lead to the
Tip. PTT to the Ring. Ground on the Sleeve.

Then, in the Menu, set MIC BTN = PTT. This turns the Mic Button feature
off.

Mic bias is applied to the mic lead on the tip - no separate connection.
See the schematic on the Elecraft website.

Re: [Elecraft] The old mic question for the NEW KX3 owner..Sorry

2014-03-30 Thread David Shoaf
Hi John,

This should get you going:

MENU Set ups for the older Heil versions of the MH3 with dynamic mic
elements:

- MENU: MIC BTN = PTT (not PTT up dn)
- MENU: MIC BIAS = OFF

Wiring:

On KX3, use a 1/8 (3.5mm) plug. Don't worry about the 2nd ring on the
picture shown in the KX3 Owner's Manual - the 2nd ring is for the up/dn
buttons. This means we get to use the more common 1/8 Tip-Ring-Sleeve
(TRS) plug.

MH-2 pin --- KX3 pin #
- --

  1 (MIC)Tip

  2 PTT Ring

 7,8 GND Sleeve

So, you'd need the standard 8-pin socket to match the MH2's 8-pin plug to a
1/8 TRS plug (Radio Shack has those) and you're there.

As for someone to make up a cable for you, here's an eBay vendor
http://stores.ebay.com/W7YENs-AMATEUR-RADIO-HELPERS?_trksid=p2047675.l2563
- I have no experience with him - who appears to be able to do this for you.

Cheers,

David

Re: [Elecraft] HRD new version question

2014-03-19 Thread David Shoaf
The KX3 is 'officially' supported with HRD version 6.2, I believe. If you're
running any of the 5.x releases, you're actually running as a K3 since the 2
command sets are so similar. Both K3 and KX3's button mapping has improved
with 6.x, too.

Check with the HRD folks on the details - especially read the release notes
for the latest HRD releases at their web site.

Cheers,

David/KG6IRW

Re: [Elecraft] Using RadioSport headset standard mic with KX3?

2014-03-01 Thread David Shoaf
What firmware version are you running? When setting MIC gain, if you can
only go up to a count of 40, you might want to consider updating to version
1.87, the current Production release. A new feature with this release is
additional gain is available for lower output mic elements.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Tune power issue on 15M only.

2013-12-28 Thread David Shoaf
Tx Gain Calibrations must be performed - a pass - at the 5W level before
proceeding to the 50W level. If the Tx Gain Cal failed at the 5W level on
one or more bands, odds are one of the output or the driver devices are
failing.

Re-run the 5W Tx Gain Cal, copy the results to an email and send it off to
Elecraft support for evaluation on Monday.

Re: [Elecraft] KXPA100 problem

2013-12-14 Thread David Shoaf
Make sure that both the ACC1 and ACC2 plugs are fully seated in their jacks
on the KX3. Pull them out and reinsert them a few times to be sure they're
fully registered. Then, make sure that both ends of the RJ45 connectors are
fully seated until they snap in place. Pull them out and reinsert a few
times to be sure.

Hope that helps.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 delay in getting to full power

2013-10-27 Thread David Shoaf
Mike,

Its getting late for the contest now, but please run the Tx Gain Calibration
from the K3 Utility. Run it first at the 5 watt level and be sure that it
passes. Then move on to the 50 watt level.

If these both pass, back up your configuration and then test with the KPA500
again.
