[Elecraft] KX2 Data operation.
I have a KX3 and never added the third party heat sink, but will probably install the one now offered by Elecraft. I'm seriously looking over the KX2. I'd be interested in hearing from owners of both rigs about digital operation comparisons. How has the heat issue been addressed in the KX2? If this question has been asked and answered, please tell me where I can find them. Thank you. 73, Dick, WN3R __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

[Elecraft] Solving the heat problem in the KX3
I really appreciate everyone's contribution and effort in attempting to solve the extensive heat problem running digital modes. I continue to follow the discussions on a daily basis. I can appreciate the fact that while the KX3 has digital capacities, it was not designed with the matching RF capacity to handle the heat. This caution was stated early on in the specs. So no surprise. However, it is clear that it would be desirable to be able to run continuously 10-20 watts in a digital mode. Perhaps, Elecraft will solve this problem and produce an official modification or method. Right now, I am thinking the only currently supported solution is the purchase of the matching amplifier. With that said, please report your experiences running digital modes with the amplifier. What power levels are acceptable without causing a heat problem in neither the radio nor the amp? Thanks guys, 73, Dick, WN3R (I have lots of Elecraft gear) __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

[Elecraft] Relay control
I've been attempting to remote my station since 2006. I finally have a setup that is reliable. Since I had two K3's and not enough antennas for my dream station running SO2R, I sold one of the amps and replaced it with the KPA500 and KAT500 combo. I removed all the switching, control, filters, etc. and created TWO independent stations sharing all the antennas. One station is dedicated to remote operation and the other is dedicated to local operation. I found the Green Heron Engineering GH Everywhere system to be ideal to control every switch in the shack, from the rotor to the remote tower mounted coax switches. I did some other cool things to directly connect RS-232 devices to ethernet for improving reliability. I determined the GH engineering relays and software to be so much better than all the other crap I tried to do. That's after nearly six years of trying to get it right. In the end it was about $50.00 more that piecing it together and writing my own control application. So look into the Green Heron everywhere system. It was built by hams for hams. 73, Dick, WN3R Sent from my iPad __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] SideKX Panel and cover for KX3
This has to be one the very best accessories ever made for a radio. After seeing the KX3, I thought it could become the ONE radio Ecomm groups could standardize on if it were hardened in some way. Scott, AK6Q, did it. His website is www.gemsproducts.com In typical ham style, I didn't read the instructions. I simply loosened the four thumb turn screws, removed the 4 small Phillips screws, took the nut off the mic connector, and replaced the panels. It took just a few minutes. After reading the instructions, I see I did it all wrong, but still with a good result. I never opened the radio. 73, Dick, WN3R Sent from my iPad __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] K3/0
I have successfully remote controlled my station using Remote Rig, GHE Everywhere, and Digi Port Server for RS-232-to-ethernet. I find that I now miss the convenience of computerized logging where I just clicked on the DX spots and it tuned the radio to the correct frequency and mode. I used to have my band decoders also select the antennas, but I do that manually since I have multiple antennas for the same band. Does anybody have work around for hooking any computer logging programs to the K3/0 when the RS-232 port is used with the Remote Rig? 73, Dick, WN3R PS My current programs are TRX Manager, LOGic, and N1MM. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] KX3 Battery charging
I noticed that my Powerex 2400 mah batteries do not seem to be charging in the KX3. I took them out and put them on a dedicated charger. I'm sure they are fine. I just installed Sanyo 1900 mah batteries to see there is a difference. I won't know for awhile. So here's my question: Is 2400 mah capacity too high for the KX3 charger? If not and the 1900 mah don't charge either I will have isolated the problem. If so, are the 1900 mah capacity OK? All batteries are less then 2 years old and lightly used. 73, Dick, WN3R __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] K3 distortion
I have two K3's. One has a problem. When I turn on the line input and advance compression, the audio becomes severally distorted. I am listening to the audio through the monitor and watching the output power on an external power meter. It might even sound like RF feedback. Without speaking into the mic output levels can be 80 watts or more. Turn off the line input and it all goes away. Audio is perfectly clean. I have completely isolated the radio to make sure it is a radio problem only. Test setup was a fully charged battery, a Heil microphone, headphones, and a dummy load. Absolutely no other connections. Radio came back from Elecraft with no problem found, but in all fairness, I did not know at the time that turning off the line input solved the problem. I discovered that by accident months later. My solution is to connect the computer sound card throughout the front mic connector as I did with other rigs. I'd like to be able to use the rear audio connections again. Any ideas? Re: [Elecraft] Dunstar Question - ANSWERED - Thanks
Thanks, Dick. Dummy me opened the tuner first and posted my question after reading its manual. Had I opened the AMP box first, I would have had my answer as I found the Y cable. Perhaps, there should a mention of the Y cable in the Tuner manual as well. Thanks again for your help. My plan is to remote the whole thing with the K3/0 which is still in the box. I have some work to do on my old Remote Rig boxes that are now connected to the IC-706. 73, Dick, WN3R On 4/2/2013 11:58 AM, Dick Dievendorff wrote: If your K3 is now providing band data to your Dunestar, it probably is using a band decoder from the four BAND lines on the K3 ACC connector. The Elecraft KPAK3AUX cable set (http://www.elecraft.com/manual/KPAK3AUX%20Cable%20Set%20Instructions.pdf) includes a Y connector that enables you to connect the KAT500/KPA500 as well as another device (your existing band decoder) to the K3's back panel ACC connector. Be careful when selecting a Y connector; some sold for VGA monitors may not have all 15 pins connected as you would expect. 73 de Dick, K6KR -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Dick, WN3R Sent: Tuesday, April 02, 2013 7:34 AM To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: [Elecraft] Dunstar Question Current configuration: K3 --- Dunstar --- Alpha 87A New configuration: K3 --- Dunstar --- KPA 500 --- KAT500 Question: How do I control the the band switching on the Dunstar? [Elecraft] Juice MG4 speaker
I bought this one for my iPad. Also works well with KX3. Costs about $35.00. Very small and rugged. I get distortion from this and the internal speaker with volume 30. So I assume the internal speaker is working as it should. Distortion seems to be an electronic problem. Fortunately, there is plenty of sound. 73, Dick, WN3R Sent from my iPad __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] K3 Problem
I actually sent my rig back for this problem, but I didn't analyze properly so it came back to me with no problem found. I now understand where my distortion is coming from. With compression above 30, I seem to be getting some RF feedback when MIC+LIN is ON. When it is OFF, audio is clean. Thinking RF was being picked up by a cable, I removed them all. It made no difference. In the TEST mode, tx audio is clean. I am anxious to get this fixed before the contest so I can use voice recordings in N1MM. [Elecraft] SSB transmit audio - Where's the punch?
I need some advice in how to get the same punch my fellow contester gets on his FT-1000MP. He claims the K-3 audio will never be as good as Yaesu, Kenwood, or ICOM. Yesterday we spent several hours between ourselves and several European stations tuning and testing. I never got a bad audio report, BUT I never got a report I had the same PUNCH!!! He reduced power and still overtalked me. I have tried HC-4, HC-5, and HC-6 using W2IHY eight band EQ with the EQPlus with some compression from the K-3.
