[Elecraft] KTCX03-1 txco installation

2020-01-02 Thread Don Sayler
Hi.

I'm installing the 1ppm txco in my K3S.

I'm not sure I understand this part of the instructions:
"Place the rectangular insulator over the TCXO leads so it covers the bottom
of the oscillator module."

Does this mean that the black foam insulator goes between the TCXO and the
KREF3 board? Does the insulator go such that it is 'parallel' to the TCXO,
or at a right angle so the insulator sticks out a little on the sides? Do
the TCXO leads poke through the insulator?

I read the instructions before I ordered the part, and I thought that it
would become clear once I had the unit in my hands.

Thanks.

[Elecraft] sdr play and K3S

2020-04-09 Thread Don Sayler
Hi Everyone.

I've been trying to get my SDRPlay (w/ SdrUno) to work with the IF output of
my K3S.

I've got OmniRig set up, so the K3S and SdrUno interact properly. Well,
almost.

There seems to be an offset between the K3S frequency and the SdrUno
frequency. For example, I dial in WWV at 10 MHz on the K3S, and SdrUno hears
the signal at ~9.875 MHz.

On 80m, this offset is around 117KHz. I've tried the setting the External
Converter offsets, that didn't help.

In SdrPlay, I do have the IF Output Frequency set to 8125000 Hz and it is
enabled. I've tried adjusting this value a little, and it didn't seem to
help.

I am aware of some of the limitations of SdrUno compared to other software,
but this is the one that I'm used to. I may switch to another one at some
point.

Any ideas? I looked through the K3S config settings, and nothing jumped out
at me.

Thanks!

73,

Don W7OXR

Ray...
I did not realize that! I did RTFM - I promise. I guessed I missed that one.
It has worked under the 1st configuration ever since I bought the KX3. One day
it changed - I was blaming a Windows update.

My K3s is connected to a USB hub external to my desktop PC and works OK - Of
course, the K3s is a USB device.

Mystery solved!!

Hi Hank:

It's always been the case when using the Elecraft Utility, that you need to
connect the rig directly to your computer, using the Elecraft cable with no
other devices in line. That's why you succeeded with case 3.

Okaysome weirdness, but I can get the software to work. Here is what I have
done (some help from you guys, some help from the IT guys where I work, and the
internet). It's a little complex

Configuration 1: My laptop is connected via USB to a PK-232SC+ which has a 2
port USB hub built in - my KXUSB is plugged in there. Under this
configuration, no joy with the KX3 Utility recognizing the COM port.

Configuration 2: My laptop is connected to the KX3 directly via USB port.
Under this configuration, no joy with the KX3 Utility recognizing the COM port.

Configuration 3: My laptop is connected to the KX3 directly via USB port.
Under COM port settings for the KX3USB connected port, I changed the latency
timer to 8 ms from 16 ms. Under this configuration, the KX3 Utility recognizes
the COM port every time.

Returning to configuration one with the lower latency timer setting does not
allow the KX3 utility to see the com port, so no joy there.

BUT - it's a weird BUT - If I connect the KXUSB directly to the laptop, open
the utility and connect, disconnect the KX3USB from the laptop and connect it
to the hub built in to the PK-232sc+, it works as long as I don't exit the KX3
utility software. I can even close the serial port in the software, BUT as
long as I don't exit the software, I can reopen the serial port and it works
fine. I can close the port and use other software that needs the KXUSB as long
as I don't exit the KX3 utility program (just leave it minimized) it works when
I need it.

How crazy is that? Any gurus figure that one out??

On the FTDI site there is a removal tool. Use it to wipe away com port drivers.
Then re-install the FTDI drivers for your KUSB or KXUSB cable.

Good luck!

[Elecraft] K3S birdies?

2018-04-10 Thread Don Sayler
Hi All.

I've been monitoring this list for a while, and have gained some useful
insights from the posts. And now I have a question...

I built my K3S #11310 last July, and I added the 100 watt amp and sub-receiver
last December.

A few weeks ago, I started hearing some unusual tones around 14380 KHz and 7259
KHz. The tones are much louder on 14380 than on 7259. At 14380, I hear a
lower-pitched tone on 14279.80, and a higher pitched tone 14279.85. I hear both
of these with no antenna connected. On 40m, the tone is quiet enough that the
background noise overcomes the tone. But on 20m, the tones are quite loud. I
also hear the tones on the sub-receiver.

Prior to a few weeks ago, I'm certain these tones were not present. I saw the
thread from 2012 about moving cables around in a K3, but if there was a build
problem, wouldn't these sounds have appeared immediately? My routers are far
away from my shack, and there is no new equipment in the shack.

Any thoughts?

Thanks.

Make sure the internal cables with the little TNC connectors are all seated
properly. A poor shield connection can contribute to birdies.
Oxidation or vibration could create this condition over time.

Hi guys,

Im looking to purchase a K3S in the near future and I would like yalls input
on which options to include. I had a K3 before however due to financial issues
I had to sell it. Now I want to get back into radio again and I want to get a
K3S.

I mostly get on the OMISS Nets on 40m however I want to also learn how to Dx on
20m (and other bands?) soon. And I want to eventually start CW after I teach
myself how to CW. Those are my near term goals (next two years). One
consideration is that whatever I include when I order the K3S will be installed
and calibrated by Elecraft at the factory. If I added options later I would
have down time and cost of shipping and cost of the work as well (I dont
really want to do it myself even though I did build my first K3).

I am likely going to include the 2.7 filter.

Other possible options are:

Other filters
General Rx
Second Rx
???

Thanks,

Mark,

This, too, appears relevant:

https://www.silabs.com/community/interface/forum.topic.html/cp210x_driver_v101-91Gl

It specifically mentions amateur radio gear, though it?s specific to SiLabs

hubs/codecs we use.

A Google search for

   "com port" Windows 10 update

turns up numerous complaints about how the latest package has broken comms,
including USB, BT, parallel ports, etc. All parties claim they?re ?working on
